  1. Pretty much what Tenzhi said.

My earliest characters were attempts at recreating characters I'd created previously, some as far back as the late 70s. After that, it's always been a random thing, based on a name or concept I happened to think of, or a powerset combo I read about on the forums, or from clicking the Random button until inspiration strikes.

For example: I rolled a new character on Union yesterday. I went into the Character Creator with a name in mind, based on something silly someone had said in chat the night before. I don't remember now what it was, but for some reason I decided I didn't like it after all, and then started checking random names to see if I could find something I liked that hadn't been used. I came up with several potential and available names, but finally settled on one - a common word that I was very surprised to find had not been used, probably more suited to a villain than a hero, but what the heck.

So then, first big decision: what AT? A scrapper, as I don't have one on that server. Went with Fire/SR, as I don't have a scrapper with that combo anywhere. Male or female? Male. Tall and not overly muscle-bound. Costume... eh. No idea. Click the Random button. Lots of animal heads. Hmm. A steampunk jacket or vest or something, with a bird head. Interesting. They got bird feet? Yup. So I made a bird person, but when I started colorizing his powers, I decided I didn't want him to be a scrapper. Back, back, back to the AT selection screen.

What then? Defender? Okay. What kind of Defender? Something I don't usually play. Empathy. And... hmm. Haven't done Dual Pistols. Redraw. Bah.

Back, back, back. Start over. Controller. Earth/... what? Thermal? Okay. Once again, got to the colorize powers screen, then meh. And back, back, back to the AT selection screen.

Blaster? No, already have two Blasters here. Defender it is. Empathy. Dual Pistols. Navy Colt Revolvers. Colorize Empathy - okay, that'll work. Excellent. Back to the costume section. Tweak. Tweak. Too tall, let's make him as small as possible. Everything to the left, but puff out his chest, like a pigeon. Cool. SAVE costume.

But the name... it doesn't really fit anymore. This one? Already used. That one? Already used. How about... OMG! Can't believe that one has not been taken.

And so, Early Bird was born.

His story will develop as I play him. Although I've considered using "Screeeech! B'caw! Urrrrrk." Well. Maybe not.

Based on the evidence at hand, walking that Incarnate path is akin to playing peekaboo with Medusa. The one from mythology, not the Inhuman.

  4. Who remembers Skyway City Beer? Man, I just about cried when they shut down the old Skyway City Beer brewery after Lord Recluse's failed attempt at stealing the recipe. Stupid Recluse - "If I can't have it, NO ONE CAN!" I'm sure they could have worked out some sort of arrangement so he could have it exported to the Rogue Isles, but no. He had to go and destroy the vault containing the only copy of the original Skyway City Beer recipe.

    Anyway, best beer ever.

Remember that ad with Azuria, before she hooked up with M.A.G.I., back when Star Strider was the spokesman?

    ***

Star Strider: Some drink only the finest wines...

    Aldo: On ice? That's nice!
    Bela: I never drink... wine.

Star Strider: Some prefer their refreshment well-aged...

Dean: Everybody >hic< loves some liquor, sometimes...
    Scotty: It's... green.

Star Strider: But when it comes to beer...

Azuria (climbs on back of motorcycle, looks at camera, smiles): It's Skyway - or the highway. (Motorcycle drives off - driver is wearing red and blue and we get the impression it might just be Statesman.)

Star Strider: Skyway City Beer. Take it from someone in a position to know: best in the city - best in the solar system - best in the galaxy.
  5. Got my Dance today. Yay. Gonna finish reading the new stories in the latest edition of the first Wild Cards book before I start on it. It's been five years since I visited Westeros. What's another evening or two?

We did get an explanation for why Corruptors could suddenly use bows and Scrappers could set themselves on fire. It was terrible and unnecessary. We also got an explanation for why we could create our own missions. If you use AE and accept its backstory, your character is an idiot. Don't get me started on Ouroboros. We also got a story arc dealing with the emergency mediport system. It has plot holes you could drive a Kronos titan through.

On the other hand, we don't get an explanation for what influence is, or what enhancements are, or how the heck Valkyrie, a tech-origin Scrapper, can train your magic origin Defender. Does the lack of a story explanation for these gameplay elements diminish your enjoyment of the game in any way? I certainly haven't seen numerous threads on these subjects, so I'm guessing no.
I hope when we finally get fingers we get an explanation for them suddenly being there!

Would you want to eat the fish eye salad at the Goldfish Emporium and Luncheonette?

Anyway, I be Steam-less and intend to remain so.
  9. Grumble, grumble.

There's plenty of space on the city map between the zones we know for a whole new tutorial area. There's no need to destroy Galaxy City. Why do it, anyway? Shock value? Bah. I would once again advocate destroying Atlas Park, but upon reflection all that would likely accomplish would be to turn Galaxy City into Atlas Park II.

    Grumble, grumble.

I'm not keen on losing Outbreak, either. I take screenies of all my new heroes with Flower Knight. It's become a TRADITION. I'm sure there are others who would like to keep Breakout as well. Why the heck can't the devs keep *both* of those starting areas in game and just *add* this new one so we can CHOOSE which one we want to start in... and keep Galaxy City, too!

    Grumble, grumble.

Is there an Eco in here?

I have a friend who plays that game but who played this game (and another game in the NCSoft stable with the same initials as the guy on the dollar bill, and no, Illuminati fans, I don't mean Adam Weishaupt) *first* - and he has several alts over there and doesn't raid. Hmm. Wouldn't it be funny if, in the not so distant future, that game became all about alts (due to infection, as it were, from former CoH players) while this one became all about raids (due, in part, to a potential influx of THEM!). Would the subscription numbers undergo a similar reversal?

    • Tarzan's Africa, full to bursting with lost civilizations, with Pal-ul-don being my favorite (I have two characters based on the Waz-don people) -
    • Pellucidar, home of David Innes and Dian the Beautiful, where time is relative in a big way and even the Lord of the Jungle can get lost -
    • Amtor, with 'Wrong Way' Carson Napier and Duare flying around Venus in the anotar. Woops, where'd the prop go? -
    • Barsoom - home of John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas, Ullyses S. Paxton, Thuvia, Carthoris, and many more -
    • Caprona - a place where, as Bowen Tyler and Lys La Rue discover, evolution isn't just a theory, but a way of life -

See also Burroughs' less well known works, like The Mucker, The Mad King, The Moon Maid, The Lost Continent, Apache Devil, The Monster Men -

Alas! No one yet, in my estimation, has made a movie that didn't stray far too far from the source material. Especially all the silly Tarzan movies...

I'm hoping this one will be the exception, that the people making the movie won't just use Burroughs' character and place names in a story of their own creation. There are ELEVEN Barsoom books. Surely out of all that material, the movie guys won't feel the need to write a whole new story, or leave out vast quantities of Burroughs-created material while simultaneously adding in their own... stuff.

Another thing I wonder about: the first three novels - A Princess of Mars, The Gods of Mars, and The Warlord of Mars - are a trilogy. Will this movie be an adaption of the first novel, complete with the cliffhanger ending, or will the movie guys try to condense all three novels into one film? Or, as I fear, dispense with the novels altogether and do their own... thing.

I don't see any mention of any Sorceresses in the First Ward preview. It just tells of a nice city being built and Hami attacking this nice city from within and of the attempts at retaliation. And then at the end: oh, btw, this place is strong in magic and otherworldly stuff!

Now, if it had said something like, "Despite all the workers who spontaneously turned into dire duck-billed platypuses and/or cello-playing unicorns in the process, along with all the constant interruptions caused by ghostly presences seeping through the thin walls between here and the next world, and all the attacks by reanimated undead fossils (<bleeping!> trilobites!) it only took X amount of years to build this shining and wondrous city. Amazingly enough, in spite of all the digging and blasting to reach stable soil needed for the foundations of all these tall buildings (possibly all the way down to bedrock!) no one ever noticed there was a trap laid underneath..."

Say... maybe the Hami trap was in the form of a giant subterranean mushroom with psychedelic properties that caused everyone to hallucinate once the city builders uncovered it and they only *thought* they built a big city that was subsequently attacked by DE and the reality of the situation is that everyone is being slowly ingested by Hami and all of Praetoria is just a dream!

And they have no Agent Mulder to save them!

  19. There's a LOT of death and destruction involved in building a city. Not necessarily a lot of human death... but still death! And destruction!
  20. "It is a abandoned, forgotten place, and a home for those who are now forgotten and abandoned."

    Wait, isn't that Dark Astoria?

Nitpick: 'an' abandoned, forgotten place not 'a' abandoned, forgotten place. Somebody been reading MMO forums too long!

On a more (or less) serious note, the whole magic being the most powerful force thing there seems rather abrupt. No mention of magic until the next to last paragraph. Why is the place so magical? And why did no one notice all this powerful magic when the place was being built?

    Explain it, GG!
  21. Pre-ordered it... but it ain't here yet.

Having massive powers or a personal connection to the supernatural could make a super even more vulnerable to fear when something that doesn't fall into their genre passes through, taking something of value and only leaving some telltale clue that it ever was there. All your powers and knowledge reduced to triviality by something that may not even realise you exist, and probably wouldn't even care if it did...
See "In Our Darkest Hour" by Steven Graham in Cthulhu Unbound for a pretty good superhero/horror crossover story. Some parts of the 'Wild Cards' anthology series would probably qualify as well.
