When I still had my 8600GT, it ran very well and not hot at all. One day my framerate dropped dramatically after starting the game up. It scared the living crap out of me as I thought my card was dying.
Turns out, the fan wasn't spinning properly. It *looked* like it was, but it was actually spinning a lot slower than it should have. Caused the card to heat up so much that it dropped the framerates. What I ended up doing was pulling the card out, removing the entire fan system from the card, took it apart and cleaned it thoroughly and then sprayed a very tiny amount of WD40 right into the center of the fan. I put it back together and the change in the speed the fan would span was incredible. Never had the framerate drop again and the fan worked fantastic after that. -
Hey guys,
First off Happy New Year!
I had an issue with my machine, it stopped POSTing so after some quick tests I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new motherboard/CPU combo. I purchased an ASRock G31M-GS R2.0 motherboard and a Q8200 Intel processor. My machine runs like a beast now. Not that it wasn't before, but jumping from a dual core to a quad core definitely has it's advantages.
All that aside, I'm not liking the temperatures I'm seeing with this processor. Idle the cores sit around 30 degrees celcius (Which isn't bad in my opinion) but under load that skyrockets and the cores hit temperatures around 65c, some of the cores going up as high as 84 as well. That seems way too high to me. I understand the TJ. Max is 100 and that the Q8200 actually have issues reporting the correct temperatures, but I'm a little worried.
Anyone have any suggestions? Would be appreciated. I'm not looking to overclock at all, but it would be nice if I didn't have to worry about the temperatures at all. My dual core ran at 55c at it's absolute highest. -
Although there are some who will tell you that the only reason to upgrade to 64-bit is because of RAM, I would disagree.
You will benefit from much more than just the RAM should your hardware (such as your CPU) be capable of 64-bit. Couple the hardware with software designed for 64-bit machines and you would be doing yourself a favor. If your system is capable of 64-bit (CPU mainly) then I would strongly recommend it. Futureproof yourself so for at least the duration of the your laptop's life, it can truly be your "last upgrade". -
Quote:Uh....I don't remember saying that he wasn't effected by it, nor that the HotFix wouldn't fix the issue. If he ISN'T using the 9.12 a CoH Helper log will absolutely help by showing us the hardware and it's driver version in one nice place. Besides....your post wasn't there when I started mine. Is that ok with you?If her husband has the 9.12 catalyst driver installed on his system, there should be no need for a CoH Helper log. The "strobe lighting" error is a known issue associated with that particular driver set and several OpenGL games. City of Heroes is specifically listed as one of those games affected. Uninstalling the 9.12 set and installing the 9.12 hotfix set WILL correct the problem.

Quote:Post a CoH Helper log and we'll see if there's any issues that pop out. Run it on his machine of course. My husband hasn't played CoX in quite some time, and in that time we have upgraded both of our PCs.
We now have Windows 7 64bit.
He currently has Intel I7-920 with a ATI 5870 gxf card.
and I have Intel I5 with a Nvidia 260 card...
I just loaded up the game on my PC with virtually no issues... other than how strange the game looks on my new 23 inch Acer screen >.< Hope they fix whatever that issue is soon.
BUT, when my husband tries to load up the game it immediately starts blinking/flashing on and off like a strobe light.
How to fix this??? -

Quote:With any issues related to cookies, just delete the cookies pertaining to that specific site and the majority of the time it will clear up.1. First, heya Aett, LTNS.
2. I have a similar issue, but one that appears to be cookie related. Between 3 sets of machines (not including my Palm Pre), it does not "recognize" that I've read a thread on one of the machines (the work laptop). Home machine remembers fine, and the Pre sees the changes, but the work laptop insists on not recognizing the "thread is read" flag and forces me to "read all" to get around it.
Sorry for the slight topic detour, but it's sorta related. Any ideas?
That being said, cookies cleared or not....this particular site has it's own issues. I also have the issue where threads I've read are not shown as read. It's intermittent which is why I know it's not on this end. Most of the time clearing the cookies fixes it for a short while, other times it continues for a few days to a week before it clears itself up. -
Quote:You need to go into CAIS 2010 and make sure CoH is allowed to access the Internet. Fully. This is most likely the cause of your issue as it's the only thing that's changed from what you've said. When firewall software updates itself, sometimes you have to allow software again.I am having the same error message, but I am running Windows XP SP3 32bit. I did upgrade to the CA Internet Security 2010 last night. That is about the only thing that is new. I was able to play last night, but when I got up today and tried getting on I couldn't.

Virtue is up and has been all day. However, I have noticed the server status page is a bit....stuck. So to speak.
-
Quote:Um....except they're not "load locked". They're completely down. The servers crashed. So....although part of your point still stands, part of what your saying has nothing to do with the issue at handHow quickly they forget.
Servers get load locked during special events when there are a certain number on the server. This happens with Freedom and Virtue more than the others. And every time it happens, we get this. Understandable, but predictable.
So the people that had to move to a server with more people so they could find a team moved to the servers in the top 3-4 spots. And now they're locked....hmmm...
Maybe try one of the servers in the lower half of the load listing? I play on a number of servers, and can find a team forming for something or other on all of them. Seriously, there's no reason to not spread the love, then you have a fallback or 11 for when this happens. -
How am I suppose to put Lord Winter in his place if I can't log on

Quote:It's not like mapservers/ridiculous lag isn't normal for ITF's anyway. Think of this as the "full experience"I think everyone transferred their characters to the west coast servers effectively killing them.
Due to time constrains I have never done an ITF before, today I was getting started on my first run.... and this happens. -

Looks like Justice and Guardian have gone down as well.
-
I had just started a mission, jumped into the mob and lost connection to the server. When it finally came out of the game, logged back in and Virtue is now greyed out.
Having some minor difficulties logging in as well. It's randomly hanging during sign in. This just started a couple of minutes ago. Anyone else? -
Quote:The solution is following all if not some of what I've posted above. Each of those individually as well as together resolve pretty much any/all issues with regards to slow loading in Windows 7. There isn't some crazy bug. It has to do with the settings on the user end.A guy from the french board told us that he had the same problem, and by using the Updater from the install folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CoHUpdater.exe), it runs fine.
I also had the problem, the only solution I found was to install CoH on its default folder (I was installing it on a Data partition).
I hope it helps, but this bug happened to a bunch of people over here, and I don't think anyone has been able to find the solution to it. -
Should right click on CoH and select Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and make sure Compatibility mode is OFF (Unchecked) and make sure Run as Administrator is ON (Checked).
If that doesn't help, double check to make sure your video drivers installed correctly and that your CoH folder is excluded from any Firewall/AV software. -

I spend enough time knocking Nvidia's lack of driver quality on these forums. I didn't want yet another thread with Saist fussing about Nvidia's incompetence at programming drivers.
Interesting. Not that I expect everyone else's experience to be flawless, but I personally have never come across any issues related to the 64-bit drivers. In fact I find 9 times out of 10 when I have graphics related issues they're with the ATI cards/drivers I've used.
Thanks for the info regardless, it's always nice to see what others are experiencing. -

The Core 2 Duo has 2 cores. The Pentium 4 does not (Although some support Hyper-Threading which sort of pretends to have 2 cores).
I'm assuming you have a P4 and not a C2D, you didn't make that clear. If this is the case, I would at the very least recommend moving over to a C2D (You'll most likely have to upgrade your motherboard as well as the CPU) if not on to something higher such as a Quad-core.
Edit: You may still be able to run software with a minimum requirement of a C2D, but it may not run effectively or without issue. -
Quote:Can we get you to post the exact error message you receive when attempting to install these drivers please?are you sure you are slecting the correct 32 or 64 bit ver of the program.
I am using the 64 bit ver of windows 7 and when I was updating my vid drivers the website would default to the 32 bit ver so I had to manualy pick the 64 bit ver from the dropdown window.
This is a laptop correct? I've found that some laptop manufacturers require you to install their specific drivers for your video card. Sometimes the downloaded ones refuse to install. I see this more with ATI based video cards in laptops than I do with nVidia though.
The actual error message may shed some light. -
Quote:As has been stated, all Core 2 processors are capable of 64-bit. I also strongly recommend installing a 64-bit variation of Windows 7 as well.I'm not sure if I have access to Windows 7 x64. I'd need to ask around, but from what I've seen so far, the options I have are all 32 bit (isn't that technically x86?). Are you saying there's nothing to be lost by having a 64 vs. an 86 and that the choice is a no-brainer?
Also, on the note of drivers, didn't 7 search for and download its own drivers automatically upon device detection? I've seen it touted for that in a big way, and indeed, that would make reinstalls infinitely less painful if I don't have to hunt down all the little odds and ends drivers. I don't even know half the stuff I could install drivers for. The big things are obvious - video card, sound card, LAN card, chipset drivers, but beyond that? Ugh, it seems like there's a driver for every bit of plastic stuck on in there.
I'm not sure if my processor is 64 capable, but it isn't terribly old. Beginning of this year, let's call it. Intel Core2 Quad, at a brief glance, but I'm sure the CoH Helper will reveal more. I'll post a report when I get around to compiling one. I'd actually need to know where to grab the CoH Helper, though. PlayNC Support recently asked me to use a programme called Game Advisor that seems to be designed to scan for settings pertaining to PlayNC games. Do you know anything about that?
Just to clarify real quick, x86 is the architecture of the system. Remember back when computers used 286, 386, 486 etc...x86 is an extension of that. The x86 architecture supports both 32 and 64 bit. The most important piece of the puzzle when moving to 64-bit is whether your processor is capable of it.
As for Game Advisor....the only "Game Advisor" I know of is Microsoft's Game Advisor. Sadly it's been discontinued and is no longer available to use.
As a suggestion, you can certainly take a look in your Device Manager before you upgrade your operating system. You will be able to find which hardware you have and if you write them down, it'll be a bit easier to find the correct drivers (Assuming Windows doesn't install the correct ones). Same with posting your CoH Helper log here. You'll get a nice view of the important hardware and work on updating your drivers off of what's listed there.
Alternatively, you can use a program called CPU-Z/CPUID and it will tell you specifically which motherboard you have (if you don't know) and then it's just a matter of visiting the manufacturer's website and downloading all of the drivers you'll require before you even do the upgrade. That way you have them on hand
