Win 7 for the laptop
Although there are some who will tell you that the only reason to upgrade to 64-bit is because of RAM, I would disagree.
You will benefit from much more than just the RAM should your hardware (such as your CPU) be capable of 64-bit. Couple the hardware with software designed for 64-bit machines and you would be doing yourself a favor. If your system is capable of 64-bit (CPU mainly) then I would strongly recommend it. Futureproof yourself so for at least the duration of the your laptop's life, it can truly be your "last upgrade".
We'll see....
I'm more worried about the strains the 64bit will have on 3 gigs of ram, doesnt 64bit by itself take up near 2gigs and then u want at least another gig or 2 for it to run smoothly for most games/apps? Just wondering if 32 bit would be the better choice just so i have more ram for games/apps (the vid card borrows a little bit of memory as is).
No. The operating system doesn't take up extra RAM just because it's 64 bit. That just makes it able to ADDRESS more RAM.

The 64-bit OS CAN have a higher memory footprint. Granted, it's not utilizing double, or even half-again as much memory as 32-bit, it does use slightly more due to the increased size of the binaries being used and stored in memory, as well as the increased bit-depth of the cached data. However, the actual extra amount used is fairly trivial in all save a few cases.
At most, you're usually talking the difference of a few megabytes of memory.
Old m1210 im gonna upgrade to win 7, it has 3gb of ram,
With that amount of ram im wondering if 64bit is even worth it, if i'd be better off with 32 bit. (Likely the last upgrade ill make for this laptop) Just got 64bit for my desktop, but thats with 8gigs of ram and a quad core, the poor little laptop is nothing in comparison. |
IMHO, I would stick to 32-bit OS for your laptop and focus your 64-bit efforts on your desktop. I installed Windows 7 Home Premium on a HP Mini Netbook w/1GB RAM & 160GB HDD (came with Win 7 Starter) and I have seen no performance hits. As a matter of fact, the HP Netbook is running just as fast as my XP based laptop. Then again, I am not playing demanding games either.
Many toons on CoV and CoH. On-line 80+ months
