I'll take a peek inside the case before I order, but it sounds like I will need to get a SATA cable.
Thanks again! -
Glad to help.
Quote:I also noticed that you (I) could save some serious Influence without giving much up by slotting L50 Defense IOs and a L50 End Red in Invincibility.
There are other ways to save influence with this build; the most obvious is to replace the Kinetic Combat set with 2 Smashing Haymaker sets. Replace the KCs in Haymaker with SH, and scrounge 3 slots for Boxing and put another set there. Same amount of def bonus, but a lot less influence--and hassle, considering how scarce some of the KC recipes are. -
Thanks, guys! I appreciate the information. Though I may be back when I have the drive in hand for some last-minute installation support--I've never installed a hard drive before.
Speaking of which, I'm guessing that if I buy a 'bare bones' drive from NewEgg I'll also need installation brackets. Is there anything else I'll need? -
Quote:I was wondering about that. I have a 500w NZXT PF-500 power supply, and it currently runs a graphics card (Nvidia 9800 GT), a sound card, 2 DVD drives, and a hard drive. How can I tell whether I am 'skating by' already? The only other issue you need to consider is power - adding another drive WILL add to the load on the power supply. It won't be as much as a beefier graphics card, but you should still factor this in.
If your system is just skating by right now with 1 HD, your graphics card, an optical disk reader, and the mobo, then you might consider upgrading that, as well. If you're not coming close to your PS peak wattage, and aren't going to overload the +12V rail that powers drives and such, you're good. -
I'm getting ready to switch my desktop PC from XP to Windows 7. I've been using removable media for backup, but in order to facilitate cleaning the C: drive for the upgrade, I'm considering buying a second internal hard drive as a backup drive.
What I had in mind was to install the second hard drive, copy everything I want to keep on it, then wipe and install the new OS on the original drive. Is that a feasible option? I want to make sure there are no unpleasant surprises, like Win 7 not reading docs on a hard drive created with XP.
If it would work, is there anything I should look out for when selecting or installing an additional internal drive? I'm not a hardware expert as you can tell, but I have installed memory, graphic cards, and a power supply before.
My case is a mid-tower with 4 internal drive bays, and only one is currently being used. Anything else I need to consider before buying? -
Just to see if it could be done, I took your build and reslotted it so it's soft-capped to S/L/E/NE/F/C (well, F/C is at 44.9) and has fully slotted attacks.
Yes, it can be done, and here's what it looks like. I think you'd do a heck of a lot better going against AVs with this than the build you have.

The thing is, with IOs and set bonuses, you don't need to give up fully slotting your attacks for survivability.
Granted, it may be difficult for Invul to soft-cap F/C as well as S/L/E/NE without using no-damage sets, but considering how infrequently players run into pure F/C damage, I'll choose well-slotted attacks before soft-capped F/C def any day of the week. -
It's a trade-off. Sure, it's cheaper and easier to soft-cap with Weave, but the Fighting Pool takes power slots you may want or need for something else. On my Ice/Axe, the only way to fit in Icicles and everything else I wanted was to drop Weave. It's nice that on defense sets like Ice and Shields you have the option to skip Weave if you'd prefer to take something else, and still soft-cap with IOs.
-
Glad to help!
I forgot to mention in my previous post that since CJ has a small base value, the benefit of fully slotting it is also small. If you find that you need some of the slots elsewhere, it wouldn't hurt your def totals much at all to pull a couple of those slots. CJ is also a good place to put another set of BotZ if you need the E/NE bonus, or the Kismet +Acc can go there, if you want the ToHit bonus it gives. -
Looks pretty good, but a few things I'd suggest:
Your armor toggles are overslotted for end reduction. If you are going to 4-slot with LotG, skip the End/Rchg in FA and GA and use the Def/Rchg instead so you reach the ED cap. (You won't need level 50s to do so, either, which should save some infl.) Both Wet Ice and Chilling Embrace will do fine with one end red IO, so I'd use those slots somewhere else.
For instance, the powers slotted with Kinetic Combat are underslotted in Accuracy and Damage. I'd add at least one more slot to each, using a Acc/Dam or Acc/Dam/End from another set.
Eradication is a great set, but low in end reduction. You want around 40% end red in Tremor and more like 50-60% in Icicles--it's a very high-end toggle. In Tremor, replace the CB Acc/Rcg with Dam/End and you'll be good to go. You may want to replace the CBs in Icicles with another set like Scirocco's or Multi Strike to get enough end red, but even without the 1.25% bonus you'll be above the soft-cap for E/NE
Recharge no longer works in Hibernate, so use the second slot elsewhere and stick a Heal or End Mod in the base slot.
Seismic Smash is underslotted for Damage; I'd recommend replacing the CI Acc/Dam/Rchg and Acc/Dam/End with Dam/End and Dam/Rchg.
Unless you really want the Fire resistance, Permafrost is very skippable. The Steadfast +Def can be slotted in Hoarfrost, so there's another power you'd like, drop PF and make the Steadfast the 6th slot in Hoarfrost.
Hope that helps! -
I'd be more concerned about the fact that several attacks aren't slotted for damage.
(That, and fifth slot in Reactive Armor; always seems like a complete waste to me.) -
Quote:Absolutely. I have 3 SGs with just my characters. To form your own SG with just your toons ? Suppose I loaded COH into another computer , could I use my same account and sign in on two separate computers and form the group that way , or is this impossible to do ? Just wondering .......
However, you can't do what you proposed; you can't logon the same account twice. Once you've formed your SG, you have two options:
1) Get a second account, logon with the second computer, and have the characters in one account invite the characters in another account. It used to be that you could do this with a trial account, but I'm not sure that's possible anymore with the trial account restrictions.
2) Ask someone to help you invite your characters to the SG. You'll have to make him/her a member, (though you can make sure they know it's temporary) but it shouldn't be too risky if you restrict their SG privileges to just invites.
Hope that helps! This would be so much simpler if the devs would allow offline SG invites, but so far they haven't obliged us with that feature.
Good luck! -
-
Quote:I thought that LotG was a special case because it's considered a different bonus than any other 7.5% recharge bonuses. Therefore, you can have 5 other 7.5% bonuses and 5 7.5% LotG bonuses. Usually, a bonus of the same type and amount is considered the same bonus and you can't have more than a total of 5 from any set.Yes I do and my understanding is that the rule of five does not apply to LoTG's Global recharge speed IO's.
But I'm the first to admit my lack of experience in this area, so I definitely could be wrong. -
Ahh, thanks Bill, got it.
Man, that's tedious. -
Sorry to be so dense, but by "click the rep thing", do you mean click on the rep rectangle under my name on each post? I've never seen that do anything but display the pithy little description of what your rep total supposedly means. Or am I missing something?
-
I know they've taken the reputation comments off the User CP page, but is there any other way to see who/when your rep changed?
I know it's not important in the big scheme of things, but someone gave me some rep points recently, and it would be nice to know who it was and why. -
I'm no expert on Stone, but looking at your build in Mid's it seems that your defense would be soft-capped in Granite to everything but Psi with just the LotG +Recharge.
If you use the other three slots to slot up to the ED limit for resistance, you'd end up with over 75% resistance to E/NE/F/C as well. Maybe you should consider using another 3 slots of Aegis in there instead of the LotG. -
Yeah, definitely either skip Permafrost or delay it to the forties. Chilling Embrace, however, needs to be taken by level 10. Though I haven't played Ice Melee, it's my understanding that Frozen Aura has improved considerably, and should be included in a Ice Melee build. If there's nothing else you want to drop, I'd drop Permafrost in order to get FA.
As for the slotting, where to start?
Glacial and Frozen Armor are way overslotted; there are better ways to get the small E/NE bonus it offers, so drop the End and End/Rchg slots. I'm not a fan of Red Fortune in general, I think GotA and LotG have better bonuses if you can afford them, but that's your call.
If you're going to add one additional slot to Smashing Haymaker, try an Acc/Dam or Acc/Dam/End from another set.
Wet Ice is a toggle, and doesn't need recharge. Put an End Red in the base slot and leave it at that.
Chilling Embrace doesn't need more than one End Red, so leave it at the base slot unless you want to slot it with a set. (If you do, Curtail Speed has a small 4-slot S/L def bonus that might be worth getting.)
The added def for slotting CJ is pretty small; I'd recommend slotting both CJ and SJ with 2 Blessing of the Zephyr for the E/NE bonus. Without the Red Fortune bonuses, either two sets of BotZ or one of Eradication in either Icicles or Frozen Aura will get you to the soft-cap for E/NE.
Energy Absorption can and should be slotted for defense as well as end mod. If you don't want to bother with a set, add another slot, drop one of the Efficacy Adaptors, and just stick a couple of common Defense IOs in it.
Icicles is underslotted, especially for end reduction. It is a very high-end toggle and should be slotted for at 50-60% end reduction. You might want to frankenslot with Scirocco's and Multi Strike to make sure you get enough end red, accuracy, damage, etc.
Tough is very underslotted for resistance, and the -KB IO is completely unnecessary since Wet Ice takes care of KB protection. Keep the Steadfast +Def, add another slot, and replace the other two Steadfast with a higher level resistance set. If you're already soft-capped for S/L/E/NE, Aegis is a good choice since it provides a nice F/C bonus for three slots.
If you take Frozen Aura, (and I think you should) it would be a good place to put 3 slots of Eradication for the E/NE bonus. Erad is low on end red, so add another couple of slots from Scirocco's Dervish or Multi Strike to make sure it's fully slotted.
Hope that helps! My experience with Ice Melee is very limited, so hopefully one of the IM experts like Aett or Tundara can give you some advice on the attacks. -
FYI, Kinetic Combat is low in Accuracy and Damage, and Eradication is very low in endurance reduction. If possible, I'd add another slot to each KC set, a Acc/Dam from another melee set. I'd strongly recommend that you stick to three slots of Eradication, and add two more slots from another set to get some end reduction. It is especially important that you do so for Mud Pots, it's a high-end toggle and it will absolutely kill your end bar to run it with 15% end red; I'd aim for 60% or more.
I know you'd like to increase the F/C def outside of Granite, but keep in mind that F/C damage is (IIRC) less than 10% of the damage you'll see in PvE. I personally don't think it's worth killing yourself to soft-cap it, especially since you have Granite to fall back on. I know that you're slotting the BotZ -KB for the F/C def bonus, but they cost around 100 million infl apiece, so if you're going to go that route you'd better have very deep pockets or a lot of merits.
Oh, and if you're looking to improve overall accuracy, the Kismet +Acc (though it's actually +ToHit) is a good choice for any defense power.
Hope that helps! -
I'm afraid I don't understand your intense focus on recharge bonuses. Recharge is great, but unless you've got a goal in mind like perma-DP, IMO it doesn't benefit Tanks as much as it does some other ATs, as long as you've got sufficient attacks for a decent attack chain. As it is, you've got *9* attacks, not counting Boxing, far more than enough to always have an attack ready, especially with all the recharge bonuses.
Honestly, I think you'd be better off 1) slotting for damage mitigation, and 2) slotting your attacks *well* rather than chasing more recovery bonuses.
I wouldn't take so many attacks, but using your power picks, here's what I'd recommend in terms of power order and slotting. This has 15% less recharge, but is soft-capped for S/L/E/NE and much better slotted attacks. I think you'll find it easier on the end bar, too, since the previous build was underslotted for end reduction in Weave and several of the attacks.

Quote:I'm no Stone Armor expert, but I do know that its armors provide typed def, not positional. Most of the sets you've chosen (ToD, Mako's, Obliteration) are primarily positional def bonus sets, so you're spending a lot of slots to get relatively small usable defense bonuses.I'm still learning and am confused, when is it better to choose between positional vs rech for example.
Look for sets like Reactive Armor, Kinetic Combat, Smashing Haymaker and Eradication instead and it will help your build much more with fewer slots. -
Many thanks to both of you! I did some quick research on the graphics cards after I posted, and it does look like the ASUS' card is substantially better than the other two. From what I can tell, the ASUS also has a better warranty--and it comes with Win 7 installed--so I think that's the one to go with.
Thanks again! -
Quote:Hmm, I wouldn't do that. Footstomp and Shield Charge are by far your best attacks, IMO Tough/Weave can wait if nothing else can be delayed.Cheers, I've already got kick from the fighting pool and was planning to pick up tough and weave at 32 and 35...pushing back stomp and shield charge to 38 and 41.
I'll stick with the current game plan then and try and build on my inf reserve and merits....see if I can get some recovery in there at some point.
