You need at least 2 accounts because if you login the same account you get kicked on the other one.
And it has to be a full account not a trial account.
Sometimes people on the forums have helped out others by creating a character to invite and promote your other characters and then they quit your SG.

However, you can't do what you proposed; you can't logon the same account twice. Once you've formed your SG, you have two options:
1) Get a second account, logon with the second computer, and have the characters in one account invite the characters in another account. It used to be that you could do this with a trial account, but I'm not sure that's possible anymore with the trial account restrictions.
2) Ask someone to help you invite your characters to the SG. You'll have to make him/her a member, (though you can make sure they know it's temporary) but it shouldn't be too risky if you restrict their SG privileges to just invites.
Hope that helps! This would be so much simpler if the devs would allow offline SG invites, but so far they haven't obliged us with that feature.

While Trial accounts cannot be invited to Supergroups, they CAN actually make one of their own at lvl 10.
Its possible to start a trial account, get to lvl 10, create your group, invite all the toons from your main account to it, and be sure to promote and pass leadership to to least one of them.
I have done it before as a test, but I admit it was a long time ago (but still after trial limitations)... so it's possible it may have been changed/fixed since then.

I have an extension of this question.
I've had a solo SG for a while, and I don't really want to trust someone with Founder privileges over my base at this point, but I want to transfer leadership.
As it currently stands, I have 7 heroes at the rank with a diamond, one at the red star supreme commander rank, and one at the no-icon rank (my hired help forgot to promote her). If the supreme commander drops from the group entirely, that should pass off the red star--but how do I ensure that the correct character gets it? What is the selection process?

Or you could just create a disposable toon on any server needed. It literally takes seconds (i.e. under a minute) to create a toon. Back in the day of the prestige grant / SG padding, I created over 600.
