Quote:All valid points. I had a feeling someone would bring up Lum, I remember trying to do a version of her way back when. A lot of problems with limited or lack of patterns on certain costume parts which I think relate to "skin" being one of your two color choices. Same goes with a lack of patterns for horns.well off the top of my head(with numerous trips to wikipedia for spelling help). a single horn oni horn. we have a rhino set of two horns, but a single one in the center of the forehead, no dice. also, oni are shown wearing tiger skins, still dont have good tiger skins, either in the one or two piece(see lum from urusi yasura) variety. a tetsubo club for tws would be nice too.
a kimono,i know in the game, nothing below the knees, but i have seen several that go knee length, or a modified short one like the girl in sin city/ the oni girl in soul calibur ..whatever the last one was. male ones too, and with several patterns please.
miko robes. we get close with existing robes, but those red ribbons around the sleeves..and the tapering larger sleeves in general. also, the high cap for onmyoji. also wouldnt mind the shirts that yamabushi wear, yuigesa, and a shakujo staff weapon.
various stock noh masks. as seen in naruto for the black ops, and the ankama ninja in empowered. would also like a fox mask, like kunimitsu from the tekken series.
also, while we get impressively close with the gunslinger coat, a bikers coat (TokkÅ-fuku) with the kanji writing going up and down the lapels. like bahn from fighting vipers, or quite a few characters from the different biker enthusiast anime/manga.
there are other things i can think of, and im not saying any of them are major oversights(though id LOVE the kimono) and i have put most of them in dink's thread already. but just figured i'd chime in on stuff that i would love to see in the game that factors strongly in anime. heck, not to go nuts already, but would like alternate casting animations for sorcery using kanji symbols or ofuda charms
A long kimono are like long dresses, the game doesn't have the underlying tech to animate movement in them. And the long Furi sleeves are also right out as an option. Again animation.
Miko style robes, I thought I remember putting together a close approximation with existing pieces once. I'm starting to think you are moving from general clothing pieces to very specific outfits that ars unlikely to be mixed and matched.
Also Kanji text/logos tend to be very character specific and rather unique in a series. I wouldn't want to see "Bad" on the back (not that we can get logos on the back, I think, haven't played with logos a lot) on every two bit Titan Weapon scrapper.
Certainly period hats and traditional masks could be a possibility. They can be mixed and matched.
Just my opinion. -

Honestly, what's left to add from the action anime/manga genre? Let me list some of what I've seen in the anime and manga I've seen or read.
For costumes
Feudal/Fantasy Japan - Samurai, Ninja, Martial Arts robes, animal parts, demon horns
Modern Japan - School uniforms, suits, Harajuku rave
Mecha Japan - Mecha armor and form fitting power suits
Alt History Japan - Steam Punk, Upper class European Renaissance outfits
Powers - Martial Arts, Ninjutsu, Swords, Pistols, Beam Weapons, Psychic Attacks, Energy Attacks, Elemental Attacks, Titan Weapons
We pretty much have everything already. Of course most of these powers also apply to western action animation and comics.
Other than perhaps adding an attack animation that's more Anime/manga influenced to some of the power sets we've had since day one, creepy drowned horror girl hair or a "Magical Girl" ribbons and sparkles costume change emote, can't think of something missing that's a major staple that fits within the confines of the game engine as we know it. -
Quote:Would you mind elaborating on why voice overs are an intrinsically bad thing for an MMO?
- Not multilingual - not as much of a problem anymore since they gave up translating
- Requires rerecording if story elements change - may be a problem getting the same voice actor
- More disk space required - the pigg files marked as music and sound effects are 3/4 of a gig, no idea how much of the 1.8 GB of stageX pigg files are sound

If I felt up to it I would do one based on "Storage Wars" where Hester buys a locker full of Inanimate Carbon Rods. "I can get 250 a piece at any store".
YUUUP! -
Quote:As oppose to being bitten by a radioactive Cthulhu? That's ... weirdly hilarious. Like a spider superhero who made Cthulhu the logo on its costume. (Because it's thinking "I'm already a spider, so I need to dress up as something even scarier than I am." Then, while it's thinking about sharks and bears and bats, a Cthulhu flies through its window)
Cthulhu-Spider! Does everything a Cthulhu can!
Hmmm. Now I can't stop thinking about a Kaiju film featuring a Cthulhu blasting areas around Tokyo Bay with it's radioactive breath. -
Issue 4: Colosseum I believe. Back when our costume choices were lumped generally into "spray on spandex", "painted on suit", "baggy clothing" or lumpy armor that breaths. And female characters had skirts and painted on short shorts as an option.
IIRC we also got our two shoulder pets (where's my parrot and/or baby dragon) and individual body sliders ("Give em the knee shooters"). -
Quote:Yes it's true, nearly all manga/anime take place in their own universe which may be or not be our world. However there are cases when characters from one series crossover to another if both series were written by the some author. An example is the author of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, had a crossover with young Goku meeting characters from an earlier series of his, Dr. Slump. Crusher Joe occurs in the same universe as The Dirty Pair, but there's a 30 year time difference between the two series. You have all the Gundam series set in Universal Century but that's like lumping all the Star Trek series together. However there are a lot of Gundam series that occur in their own universe like G-Gundam.Anime is about localized stories that take place within their own little spheres; superheroes on the other hand can have their own separate headlining titles, but the story of Ant-Man can be directly influenced by the Fantastic Four. It's about a universe based heavily off of our own where these caped crusaders (and their allies) can alter the world around them (theoretically for the better) by utilizing the fantastical abilities of those that co-exist in that world. You won't find One Piece characters popping up in Dragon Ball Z, and you won't find Bleach characters popping up in Naruto. Yes, I get that's because they're owned by different people, but my point is that continuity does not exist outside of the anime. With superheroes, continuity is written so that there is story that extends beyond the pages of any one comic book. With superheroes, it's "heroes are everywhere, all around in the world we live in", and with anime, it's "heroes exist in this make-believe world that exists outside of (or parallel to) our own".
Of course then you have all the "day in a life of a ordinary high school student" that don't actually conflict with one another or have impacts on a world/regional scale.
One problem people have with a number of series is the world isn't laid out for them. It's strange, different and it takes a while before any says why. Take Trigun. It looks like a western but there are all these crashed spaceships, giant light bulbs and multiple moons. It's a while before you get some of the backstory. Same could be said with Trinity Blood, it takes quite a while before it's explained how things got so different on Earth as well as the origins of the Methuselah.
Also due to the long story arc nature of some series, dropping in on one episode is like trying to make sense of Lost if you started in the middle of Season 3. Worse with series with ever inflating casts (like Bleach). I can see someone watching one episode and deciding there is just too much backstory to understand and catch up on so they write the series off. At least with B:tAS the vast majority of episodes are standalone, you just have to be familiar with Batman, who is over 70 years old now. Most anime only run a season or two, a few past 5 years and very very few that are iconic enough to be multi-generational (Yamato, Cutie Honey, Lupin III) that they get rebooted every so often. -

Quote:Yea, that was a stupid comment. And why wouldn't I have windows 7 regardless of what video card I had?
Have you tried defragging the game files. Maybe it's a problem with choppy drive access.
Have you checked out your system's latency? Here is a simple testing tool for that. -
A great loss and a true hero. I remember watching being woken up by my parents to watch him on our B+W TV take those first few steps on the Moon.
I honestly expected we (mankind) would have some kind of active presence there by now, even if it nothing more than a remote radio telescope listening to the universe, outside of all the chatter of our planet. -
Well not officially. But people see similarities. Alien by birth (possible retcon), super strong, can fly (but it was a learned skill), can be tossed through buildings and survive attacks that reduce mountains (acquired through power escalator as the series went on).
Most people who make this comment had never seen the original Dragon Ball series when he was just a young boy who happen to be very strong and simply wanted to become the best martial artist in the world to help people. -
Quote:No, that's not the goal. The goal of F2P/Hybrid is to extract every dollar a player, every player, is willing to spend. You can afford a subscription, well here are some things you may also be interested in. You can't afford or rationalize a subscription, well do you need another character slot? How about tells? larger money cap? How about an "epic" or a pet class? The *point* is that the system should be set up to encourage everyone to become a subscriber and then remain subscribed. That *is* the goal, isn't it?
The goal may be at least $10-11 a month (large subscription plan) but that's less than three Premium players buying monthly IO and Auction house licenses every month. How about the sale of the new costume and power sets. How many player subscription months does that translate into?
And yes, a steady and or predictable revenue stream is better than a sporadic one, so subscriptions need to include some items for "free" that F2P would need to pay for but there has to be enough item variety so there is at least one carrot for everyone, whether it's unlocked ATs, powersets, costumes, character slots, story content, entire zones, high level content, crafting, player mission creation, etc. Some of which is subscriber only. A player may not care about all those things but enough things may push them into becoming subscribers.
Lastly, people a generally short sighted when it comes to small periodic costs versus large one time costs. Can't afford to spend $500 on a big TV but I can rent one indefinitely for $25 a month. Make the fix cost large enough, the monthly fee seems like a bargain. -
Quote:I assume you mean forum hate and not developers. After all we got anime inspired armor (think hardsuits from Bubblegum Crisis) and sailor/school uniforms years ago and more recently titan weapons and mecha armor.I've been going about the fora for a while, and I've noticed that many posters hold no love for the idea of adding anime-inspired, well, anything to the game. I never understood why this was. I mean, there's no rule that says superheroes need to fit Western standards...Son Goku and Ichigo Kurosaki are just as much superheroes as Batman or Spidey.
So I have finally come to this particular forum to pose the following question:
Why all the Manga hate?
(And for Pete's sake, please try not to flame.)
Some people simply dislike the art style. They don't like the big eyes, the short impracticable school uniforms on girls, the pretty boys with the emo hair.
Maybe they don't look beyond a story genre they dislike, whether it's giant robots or harem or magical girl or overpowered school boys or excessive fan service. Hate one, gotta hate em all.
Maybe because some of the longer running series are longer running simply because of the excessive filler (DBZ fights or Bleach side stories for example) inserted into them simply because the anime is covering the manga faster than the manga is being written.
And maybe, just maybe they can feel better about being a comic book fan by deriding anime/manga fans. It's not like someone sells a Squirrel Girl body pillow cover.
Edit: And if they did do a line of female super hero pillow covers, would Wasp be throw pillow size? -
Does the game currently work with the driver you are using? If yes, ignore the message.
The game doesn't know if there is a new driver for whatever video card installed in a system. However it can tell if the driver is X months old and runs with the assumption that there must be a newer one out there so it complains.
My folks have an old P4 Dell with a GeForce 4 MX card in it. The game complains about the driver date but it still works fine (at fairly low settings, after all it's a GF 4 MX card) and the last driver for that card came out in 2007 I think. -
Heard about it while I was heading for the gym. Sad day.

Quote:That's not as true as you might think. Casinos like repeat customers no matter how much they lose there. Their income model is based on the average player will lose X% of the money they brought with them per hour. Therefore you want lots of people there and you want them to return frequently and spend a lot of time there when they do. Meal and entertainment comps, slot tournaments, free swag all makes the little guy feel important as well. And the overall experience keeps them returning every weekend and willing to lose $100 before calling it a night, all the better. 1000 guppies is better than one whale.I, myself, don't feel like a VIP, but for entirely different reasons. It comes down to what I think a "Very Important Person" constitutes. First of all, regular businesses don't just hand that status out. You don't become a VIP at a Las Vegas casino by paying for a hotel suite, for instance. You become a VIP by being a high-roller who spends a lot of money at the casino until it adds up. That, to me, is what the VIP status should signify - people who are willing and able to pay more, hence why they're given a status all of their own.

Well ignoring his recent health problems I think Michael Clarke Duncan would be a good Gan.
And while season long story arcs is a relatively "new" concept for American TV, I wouldn't say people watching a new Blake 7 would think "the season arcs remind me of Buffy" or B5 (which is at least a space drama) or possibly Firefly if the season was completed and played in the right order.
In the case of John Carter, the general public didn't realize it was the prime source of the space opera genre and thus thought it was a simple ripoff of more recent space opera like Star Wars or even Buck Rodgers. Of course back when Princess of Mars first was serialized, people probably thought it was just Tarzan on Mars and ERB was a one note hack that just recycled his core story from the jungle of Africa, to Mars, to the hollow Earth.
When I first saw Blake 7 I first thought it was Star Trek turned on it's head. The Federation was evil, the logical, emotionless science guy is an jerk, the captain always put his agenda before the ship and crew and the rest of the crew was a bunch of icky criminals. Farscape is a lot closer to Blake 7 than B5, Firefly or new BSG and I would think it would be the show people, not knowing better, would compare a new Blake 7 to. I can already see it, "it's Farscape without the Muppets and body paint". -
I think Wil could play Avon as well. He did a good job playing the genius, snarky p***k on Eureka. Actually he's made snarky p***k his go to character on BBT, Eureka, The Guild.
-
Blake 7 is about a motley group of prisoners that escape from custody from the oppressive Federation when they stumble upon an alien ship that far outclasses anything the Federation has, including a teleportation system and later acquires a computer that has the ability to predict the future.
Every week they try to encourage a rebellion while staying one step ahead of their pursuers who is led by the female supreme commander and later post coup President of the Federation who desperately wants their ship with it's advance technology. -
I'm tier 9. I get 6600PP per year, which is about $73.50 worth of points (one $50, one $15 and the rest at 80pp per dollar). I spend that on new power and costume sets. I don't care much about incarnate or SSA content, or anything that requires me to hunt for a team that is interested in experiencing the content rather than just grind for reward. What I do care about is all the free character slots and the later Praetoria content.
For my "annual" (14 months actually) plan of $143.40 (lets round up to $145) I could buy 13560 points which would give me 11 reward tokens (vs 14), no transfers (vs 14) and excluding what I would get as a stipend for that time (7700 PP), have enough points to buy 17 character slots. But I still don't get access to the higher level Praetoria story content, lose the free to VIP powersets and I think there are a few free to VIP costume sets I would lose as well.
I can't see myself going premium anytime soon, I lose too much in the short term and I would be hesitant to spend more to permanently unlock all the content that comes free for VIP (this includes powersets, costumes, EATs). The powers that be did a good job deciding VIP perks and unlock costs that would keep a Tier 9 player like me paying to stay VIP. -
It occurred to me that Sheldon from BBT is Avon without the swagger.
I can't think of any show that's been on since B7 that's derived from it. I could see people draw parallels to Firefly but Mal wasn't on a personal crusade to take down the Alliance, simply endure them.
Same could be said about Farscape.
