Quote:Guess they figured their reputation is already down the tube with this set of customers and want to just bury it the quickest way possible without being shown up if they release the property to someone else and risk the new owners making more money than they were making. That would be bad buisness/look for the decision makers. If things do end the way they have been going, with NCSoft's increasingly obvious contempt for its loyal customers, I expect exactly this kind of fallout in North America and much of Europe. They're pretty much telling us in no uncertain terms they could care less about our money, they just want CoH and Paragon swept away for some reason.

Quote:in COX in instances, I keep getting the "no signal" message when trying to call in a mish while still inside one. Is this a bug that I thought up to now was normal? If you read the entirety of the quote you included in your post, you'll note that I mention this. I wrote it the way I did to emphasize the total lack of transparency inherent in the design.
Unlike CoH, you can call in missions even when you're inside the instance. It therefore never have occurred to me to try to use the crime computer until I exited the instance, so I didn't realize there was a hidden exit menu choice (it's not really correct to call it a button) until I expressed my frustration with having to find a door to a friend and he clued me in on the secret.
What were the CO designers thinking? Do they think that clicking a button is somehow more immersion breaking than clicking an icon and selecting a menu item? -
Quote:yeah. so this closingshould be not a single bit of a surprise, given that track record.Basically, we move forward by educating people about NcSoft's track record. Facts are facts:
1) Tabula Rasa's closure was so horrid it went to court and Garriot was awarded $28 million.
2) The staff on Dungeon Runners had plans to save the game, but were ignored.
3) Paragon Studios and City of Heroes were given zero time to prep.
4) Five MMOs down the drain, City of Heroes will be number six.
Their track record is horrid. The fudge the truth. If you're thinking of buying a NcSoft game (with a monthly fee, one they don't even support properly overseas) be ready hear these words when they decide to pull the plug, "I told you so." -
Quote:yeah, he was a great wrestler.I'm going to do something I hate when other people do....I'm going to relate this to a real life tragedy.
Growing up, I was a HUGE wrestling fan...went to wrestlemania V with my best friend, ordered PPV's, read the dirt sheets. I followed it as I grew to adult hood, hung out with work friends on Monday nights to watch Raw/Nitro.
Then one of my favorite wrestlers killed his wife, his child and then himself. I've hardly watched it since.
I think MMO's are going to be the same (ie...after ncsoft shuts down CoH that's it for me). -
Quote:three teams is 24 people. For a "dead" server (of a dead game) Guardian has surprisingly good vital signs. 3 teams ran Sara Moore saturday night.
Ahh cityfolk, if there isn't 20,000 people per square foot it's a barren wasteland.
Union would be having some amazingly long queues.
When I'm talking about empty I'm more talking about actual activity overall not a team of friends planned a day to get together and run a TF. 3 teams running sara moore on one saturday is nice but sara moore can be and is ran about anytime any day on virtue/freedom and dont have to plan with an SG, or a bunch of friends to do it. Usually easy to form team and go. On many other servers, outside peak hours and sometiems during peak hours, the better part of an hour is trying to form a team. And redside on those lower population servers can just about forget about it unless you know a group of peopel that is planning on running something and have a spot. aka, dead server.
ah country folk, if there are 2 people within 300 miles, they think they are in a big city. -
Quote:About as irrelevant as someone saying the chances of theis game being shutdown was a 75% chance back in July. Yet most people would have said no way in hell, or at most slim to none. Yet, here we are on the way there. Even if there is a slim chance or rarely happens, such as someone entering a club and shooting anything that moves, or someone goign to work and bowing people up are slim chances, yet it happens. AT many establishments, there are policies in place to prevent that, thus the pat down at many clubs. Do crap still happen? Sure. But think of the outrage if you learned your loved on got shot because someone refused to check people at the door because they felt that "oh it rarely happens, no point in checking people."I think she means places like Russia.
That's pedantic and irrelevant.
Oh. You're one of those people that think that all of us Kins are trying to troll you. No wonder you're so negative!
And no I didnt say all Kins. And it probably have less to to do with the fact they are a kin and more with the type of person that just so happen to play that particular kin and just so happen to have a power or buff that is more love it or hate it and had to power to place that power on anyone they pleased, just because they can, and nothing anyone could do to stop it...until of course the change occured. -

So will they just plan on ignoring the C&D order if it happens? Will it be a case of the Resistance (Players dedicated to run an emulator regardless of the legalities and etc and stolen IP all for the common enjoyment of themselves and players like them) vs Emperor Cole (NCSoft)?
-
yep, actually.
yes again but in the short run may lose the casual feel and casual gamer but when it comes down to buisness and money and long term, what you said would need to happen for good population growth. -

Quote:That how it should of been a long time ago. Most other servers were dead zones but alas, the coding and engine limitations and the way the servers were set up along with the problem of name transfers and people not wanting to risk having to rename their character kind of shut down that idea....Would you care?
Let's assume somehow your character miraculously remained, unharmed along with the servers.
I think three servers should suffice. -
Quote:Sometimes hackers are domestic and not part of large organizations and sometimes people do stuff just because they can.Personal information? Like the email address you used to sign up? It's a private server. You don't have to give anyone your billing info and credit card number.
When people talk about "hacked servers" they're talking about players using hacks that give them an unfair advantage, like being able to run at lightning speeds(which I did witness once).
They're not talking about a honeypot scenario where the private server exists to install malware, etc. I assume that that has happened at some point, but probably only a handful of times and aimed specifically at really large markets like that of a certain 800 Pound Gorilla. Why would the Russian Mafia bother with the monumental job of setting up a private server that will only have 200 people play on it for a game that they had literally never even heard of before when there are MUCH bigger targets for them to exploit?
Again, a CoX private server would only be run by someone that loves this game and doesn't want to see it end. Period.
I hope so!
And I rather not even have an email address hacked, but can be solved by using a false one. And sometimes an email address is all someone needs. Most of the time it's mundane stuff like junk mail though.
Yeah, more than likely it will be ran by someone who loves this game and dont want to see it end but even those people are not devoid of ulterior motives or automatically have the means to protect themselves from hackers in some form or fashion. Even for exploited hacks that merely affect their characters. Yes they probably will be banned but if it's easy to hack then people will do it, even if it's only because they can. Like people used to drive by speed boost and regardless of the protests and messages and PMs, they continued to do it just because they can. Until the devs killed their fun with Null the Gull.
But the main thing is that unlike NCSoft and Paragon studios where the game is ran by an actual company, if something was to happen, there are steps that can be taken to address it. With private servers, I imagine that if something was to happen, it would be "Well tough luck. That is the risk of playing on a private server. There is nothign to be done but all you can do is hope for the best now." -
Quote:yes assuming the community dont contribute to the downfall again.I totally see your point. All the better reason to go for a CoH/V 2. Just go balls to the wall on everything we've ever asked for, and totally revamp the things that need to be revamped. Add in a good PvP system from the very first day, because that's critical.
Remember that this game attracted many casual gamers that dont deal too well with the "usual" constant and "demeaning/insulting" trash talk that comes with it. Probably should include a system that rid of those types of players lot quicker and more effeciently to prevent them from running/turning off new players/inexperienced players which can cut into the population with fixes to fix that end up leaving hardcore pvpers jaded and leaving instead thus still taking a hit in population. Or have separate zone for pure hardcore people and one for beginners, yet I'm not sure where would the line be crossed to identify each side and or how to stop the hardcore ones from going in a beginner zone and having a field day at the expense of others and still end up with the current PVP problems that this game has now. -
Quote:It's fun to me in CO. I kind of like it better over there. It does nice damage but doesnt feel endurance heavy and thus allows more attacks. It's over all about the same speed as titan weapons, a little slower than with momentum but hell of a lot faster than the initial COX attack but just as fluid, to me.Im going to miss the hell out my Titan Weapons character...
Its been a long time without playing as suscriber for CO, so I havent tried Earth, Wind, revamp for Martial arts and the Heavy Weapons...
So I got a question for CO players in this forums:
Are Heavy Weapons fun in CO? Like having nice combos and similar powers as Titan Weapons in CoH?
Not sure if I should give it a try as a VIP, feels clunky compared to fluid combat and animations in DCUO.
Thanks! -
Quote:Ok. As long as someone is there when or if or just in case crap hit the fan, then it should work.Positivity is correct.
The same measures that regular development teams take.
It's the same process, the same mentality and the same degree of smarts and adaptability.
They put measures in place preemptively and they react and respond to anything that may come up in testing phases and, usually, they're good to go.
However, exploits happen on live servers and developers implement fixes.
It's a fact of life and it doesn't prevent an emulator from being great any more than it does for anything else.
You're talking about complicated systems that educated/skilled and talented people are working with. It's not just some guys following a youtube tutorial on how to emulate a game... they have the know how and take pride in the work that they put in to provide that emulator for the community.
So basically as long as it's not a backyard amatuer night thrown together thing, it should be good to go.
And we have someone with the expertise to build an emulator, safe emulator, here for COX? -
Quote:yea.I was talking to a friend about this the other day - one that played CoH, regularly played WoW, and probably tried about everything else out there (he is also of the opinion that it makes little sense on the surface what NCSoft is doing...and he's an economist!
).
He brought up gear, and how is tied to appearance. I wondered...why would they even do that? That takes away options for customization. "Because players want to be seen with their kewl loot. It's for their egos." That mentality is SO far from my own. Heck, half the time I don't even want to be seen at all in the game. Strutting around showing off accomplishments is the furthest thing from my mind. I'd much rather show off creativity via character concept, if anything at all.
(Similarly PvP does nothing for me - I'm not going to gloat if I win, but if I lose (and I will, bc I am not l33t), whee, I get to hear a mouthful from some jerk. Yay!) -
Quote:Ah yes and something going from niche to mainstream usually dont happen fast nor on the first few attempts. Even with good ol Ford, his mainstream success actually came with his third major automotive company with the Detroit Automobile Company being the first (1899). The second one, Henry Ford Company, failed and the remnants of it became Cadillac headed by a Ford associate named Leland, which was eventually bought by GM. Then in a turn of irony, Leland founded Lincoln but came into trouble and good ol Ford was more than happy to get revenge on Leland and bought Lincoln for the lowest price prossible, way less than what the company was worth and basically kicked Leland out.I'm sure automobiles were quite a niche market at first. Then Ford made it non-niche. Saying that freaking superheroes are a niche market is pretty ignorant - look at the ticket sales for all these superhero movies.
But people tend to forget all the other automotive companies out there that didnt make it that came before Ford and when cars were niche and considred only a mere noisy smoking hobby. Only one that came from one of the original companies is the Mercedes-Benz (from the Benz car of 1885 and Daimler of 1889). The first Ford company was founded in 1901. The second, current one came a little later.
The point is that it may take a few tries to go mainstream and I think we are about there with super hero MMOs, but not quite. Then again, gaming itself was considered niche until very recently and online gaming is relatively new and still considered niche outside the gaming world. In about ten years or so, COX would be considered an early attempt to break into the super hero market. WoW is Ford. COX is like DeLorean. Cool car, features, unique, yet didnt hit mainstream very well. -
Quote:Basically. But when they get into a pinch they want to use our tax dollars to bail them out, yet call the indivudals that they got rid of to make more profits and need assistance leeches.DC has a wonderful brand for the niche genre of superhero's.
Admittedly when I got my Economics degree from UCLA in 1986 one my professors warned us about some things that were coming down the pike. At "that" time nobody worth mentioning would ever have defined a profitable company at the levels reported for COH as "failed".
Fast forward post greed is good, the software explosion and the entry of number crunchers into software corporations in positions of power and we have profitable games now being labeled as failed because they failed to be MOAR profitable....
Ok that's cool, but that is the exact same mentality that took your(WORKING AMERICANS) jobs and sent them elsewhere, not because the company was not making enough profit to be sustained, but because they were not making enough money to give the CEO and other executives the level of BONUS they wanted. -
Quote:Sure. As rare as hacking may be, just like home invasions out of the hundred of millions of people that rent or own homes are rare, still what stuff goes into preventing hacking. Or do they wait until it happens then clean up the mess and hope no one's personal information has been affected? This whole "hacked server" thing is really a canard and a non-issue. The vast majority of people that run private servers just want to provide a fun, quality gaming experience, and they ban hackers on the rare occasion when they find them(because they rarely exist). The vast majority of players just want the same quality experience.
Far too much of what I'm reading in this thread are people with wrongful notions of what to expect from private servers; That they're highly illegal hackfests. A CoX private server is likely to be just like playing on Beta with a tight-knit community. -
Quote:yea.I reported each time it happened to me. The person was either short term banned or told to leave me alone, except for once earlier this year which forced me to take stronger action to get the person to leave me alone.
You are right I never should have been forced to take stronger actions by the people not doing their job to curb this very real problem. -
yes. And most of the time no one does anything to attempt to rid of them or let them know that the behavior can be dangerous for some. It's just brushed off here as "oh it's the internet what can you expect? Dont like it, dont log on." especially by the people that had and were appointed to have the power to do something about it.
-
Quote:Wow. Learn something new everyday. Always thought games were created for fun and people played for fun and not to show off stuff and or ego strokes but if that wasthe case grindfests wouldnt be popular and if grinding was fun, then there wouldnt be so many people trying to find ways to get around it to get through it as quick as possible. That really explains a lot though.I agree COH was too easy. It gave a diminished sense of accomplishment. NCsoft knows that (most)people play MMOs to satisfy their egos, from being able to show off their E-BLING and what what ever else they accomplished. Which COH had none of. Really the closest thing to e-bling in this game are Pylon runs time.
