but in order for NCSoft to go bankrupt, something terrible would have to happen to their asian fanbase. They would have to really piss them off and they must mass exodus.
NCSoft have relatively few bills to pay outside the games they make and large amounts of cash and very little debt. They probably will kill every single game and fire everyone within those games except the main one before going bankrupt.
The way it's looking, they have a very solid fanbase in Asia, which vastly outnumbers what they lost here. Not to mention they seem to be very good at releasing games that Asian market gamers like.
But yeah if they are some how liquidated, then the IP for COH might be sold off but that doesnt mean it will fall into good hands or hands that wish to make another COX. Creditors probably would sell it to anyone with the cash. This mean that COX may come back in current form, or you might see COX lore with WoW like gameplay. -
Quote:always thought it was kind of weak for Statesman to die at the hands Darrin of all people. No climatic battle between him and LR and Archnos? Even a finall battle between him and Nemesis I would think would be better. Nope, thee most powerful hero meets his end by the hands of some random dude named DarrinNo, I don't mean the first SSA killed the game, nor the implementation of Signature Story Arcs period, I mean Darrin Wade, the NPC killed City of Heroes in revenge for us thwarting him. Realizing he could not have the world, he vowed to destroy it instead!
Obvious in hindsight, but he could have associates, I think we've been thinking far too outwardly on who murdered City of's future... Only an inside job could have done this, AND MY PRIME SUSPECT IS DARRIN WADE! -

Quote:yeah.I just like gameplay, but environment is important to me. Story is sort of relevant to that- I like the superhero world, I don't like dragons or epic asian quest worlds. But I also don't care about the involved lore or bad guys, lol. I play games for fun. In CO, I like beating up guys in purple hats, I like beating up robot cowboys, I like beating up mechanical sharks. It's campy and fun.
The general gist of the story is summed up in the cut scenes anyways. This isn't exactly Kierkegaard- You're a super hero and you fight generic evil bad guys for great lol's, comical moments and entertainment.
I've always been annoyed by the COH lore crowd, even though I love COH. I mean, to me, it's a fun super hero game. The intelligent, involved aspect of the game has always been end game character building since I started playing. I think I have a decent understanding of COH lore, but I only picked it up by accident while playing a fun video game. It's just not important to me.
If I wanted to become involved in the content of great walls of text I would be reading Kafka, not the dialogue in super hero video games. At least CO doesn't make the mistake of taking itself too seriously in that respect, and I'm very grateful in that respect. It's a tremendous breath of fresh air. -
yea. But it may mean they will cut some stuff. From the looks of their actions over the years when things like stocks and stuff get low for a while, they have a tendency to trim stuff off.

You and me both.

Hmm interesting. From what I see on the boards, it's more than 15 min on average but some people may have done it in 15. It takes about 30 for me, never an hour yet, and some people probably take more than an hour. Given I was taking my time for 30 mins, I suppose that if a person get on it and go from mission to mission and not clowning around in between missions, then 15 is very doable. Someone might have done it in ten. Got some speed demons out there.

Quote:yeaThat's all well and good on an end game build. But my free form character with basic gear drops in CO was soloing +3 level mobs in the equivelant of say, x5 groups at level 20. I've never made or seen a character in COH running only SO's that can comfortably solo +3x5 at level 20 (excluding Claws/Fire only running juiced up advantageous AE farm maps.) And CO doesn't even have inspirations. I soloed all the comic books and adventure packs from 20-25, again with basic gear. I've never soloed TF's in COH during that level range using only SO's, and even if I did it would have taken twice as long and been twice as tedious with less than half the production value in the content.

Quote:some people had some bad experiences with those types of servers. I doubt all of them are hack central ad doubt all of them are hack free.Oh, stop it.
Those of us that have actually played on private servers have had some good experiences with them. The hypothetical guy that would go through the effort of getting one up and running isn't going to be content with a sloppy piece of crap. And this fear of ubiquitous hacks is even more farcical. -
Quote:more than likely but cant say for sure as I havent made it there myself yet. there are powers that start off at 30% you can choose and my defense (resistance equivalent) is already at 50% and that's just as a side affect of focusing on other things like hit points and strength. I think if someone was to focus on defense a little more than me, then 90% resistance is well within easy reach.They do, but it's not the same. Most CO pets are closer to Controller/Dominator style pets.
I like the "Three minion, two lieutenant, one boss" structure of the Mastermind, and the wide variety of types (including three different types of human "pets"), and CO doesn't have that, just a bunch of different random pets scattered through out its various powersets.
I could make a rough approximation of my Robots mastermind there (but without the Assault bot), but nothing close to Ninjas, Thugs, or Mercs, and only a single Beast or Demon pet.
And I'm not sure it supports my favorite style of Masterminding: sitting back and letting the pets do most of the work, like an actual fictional mastermind. I direct them, they do the damage. My job is to keep an eye on everyone's health bars and throw out buffs, debuffs, and heals as required, not to attack the enemy directly.
That's disheartening. The ability to get that sort of near-invulnerability is what I love about CoH melee classes. Superman and the Hulk don't require someone behind them casting healing spells on them in order to win fights, why should I have to?
Yeah, exactly this. (Though replace "Vorpal" with "Ion"). With resistances on my Elec/Invuln Brute hitting 80% with Resilient Alpha (and 90% with Resilient Alpha and the new Set bonuses on the Test server), I feel like nothing (other than Psi and some Incarnate Trial bosses) can take me down, and that's before hitting a Barrier Destiny.
CO Invulnerability only seems to give 27% resist, but the Wiki says it scales with super stats, but doesn't explain how it scales or what it maxes out at (or if it maxes out at all). Can I hit 90% there, too? -
Quote:+1.The Poe fight is easy, the trick is to run away right after the cutscene. All the minions should follow you into the hall, clear them out there, then run inside to take down the big boss. And just remember to block his soul drains.
Or I just run in there guns blazing and take them all out no problem. -
Quote:may have made the statement a bit too late maybe. They may have tried forming/joining one, then either logged or went solo and stopped monitoring the channel. Then that one moment you offer doesnt really nullify the other times before you logged and or when you are not offering to form a team. Even though if they did see it, it's odd they were not a single taker to the offer.I meant "On Sale" for less than $300. :P Though if I ever have $300 and nothing else I'd prefer to buy, I'd consider it.
Also, my face when the following happens:
1. People in the CoX channel complain that it's hard to find teams
2. I offer to form a team
3. No takers.
It's like trying to form a specific TF on a less populated server then someone the next day say they ran said tf at 1pm in the afternoon which still is useless to the case if a person was logged on at 9am-12pm.
It is a bit difficult to get a team together overall. Every now in then someone in the channel offers but besides those few times, it's usually everyman for themselves it seems. Although, I do keep getting blind team invites and yet to find the feature to block those if that feature is available. I see no reason to team much in that game but I like it like that. But it seems a number of transfer people not used to it just yet. Ilike it because there is no waiting for peak times, or a specific group that runs that specific action at a certain time to log, or anything like that. When it's solo based content, just log on and go regardless of the time, day, who's on, who is not on, and whether or not people just ran it interested or not. Just able to log on anytime any day and no slow down because of running into inerestign content that requires a team. -

That is a lot of hours over the years. What is it? About 3 1/2 hours a day average give or take?
Yeah I dont view it as a waste of time anymore than any other pay to play activity in life. What I got out of it was enjoyment and many times, enjoyment isnt free.
Although I get what the OP is saying. I think in hindsight, if people knew the exact date the game was going to be shut off, I doubt many would put in 10,000+ hours in it if any at all. but hindsight is always 20/20 and the future is covered in a very thick fog of war that gets thicker further ahead a person try to see. -
Quote:Who would want to play as spiderman should be the better question.I was watching an interview with one of the designers for Marvel's upcoming MMORPG.
He basically said "Why would you want to play as "Captain Firepants" when you can play as a "known" superhero, like Spiderman".
He ... just ... doesnt ... get ... it.
I'd much rather play as Captain Firepants - because he is MY creation. Because he is an extension of my personality and expression of my creativity.
I dont want to be locked into someone elses superhero design and be just like everyone else.
I dont think that some game creators do not realize that players like to be creative and even if they play an established character, they want to feel like it's them. Cant do that when you know good and well it's SPiderman who have a set look and mannerism, compared to Master Chief, who face was never shown, maybe until recently, and he's an icon now. Because when players play that game, they are the Master Chief. it is them under that helmet. -

Quote:hmmm, dont think many other games have a fire armor equivalent. None that I can think of.I agree, It's still one of the funnest things i've ever played, even if it's somewhat empty.
Funny thing is, City of heroes can be a very secretly complex game, And does things no other MMO has ever done or tried to do (Well)
Name one other MMO where you felt as badass as a ss/fire brute? NAME IT NOW! -
Quote:For the love of God is there any reason to be such a bunch of tools when there's about 38 days left? All I want is 80 points transferred to my 4th acct so it will still be usable for the last 12 days of coh. After 8 years, this is how you treat a customer? I can see where GM MeanieFace is going to get a job RIGHT AWAY.
GM_MeanieFace: Hello, I am GM MeanieFace. Is your character still stuck?
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: hi
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i emailed you about my inventions ios not workingh
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: so yep still stuckwhy are they grayed out?
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i do not want to craft with this toon so I shouldn't need one
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: What tier is your account at in th eParagon Reward Tree?
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: 7
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: That would be why.
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: Seriously? cut me a break, I can't upgrade to vip, i have 240 points left, if i spend 160 nowq
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: A Premium account would need to be at Tier 8 to have access to the Invention System
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: now* i will be screwed from 11/18 on
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i have 4 accts - i paid you good money for EIGHT years
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: and you can't offer me any customer service?
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: I do understand.
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: that is horrible and mean
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: then fix it
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: please
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: However, I cannot grant you extra perks on this account, because it is not fair to those accounts that unlocked the feature legitimately
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: with sugar
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i was vip for the longest time and i'd love to upgrade but I CAN'T
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: cuz you wont' let us
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: then float me 80 points?
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: Again, I can't do that.
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: so i can have service for the actual 60 days - i already have 240 left
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: phone number
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: or supervisor
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: there's no reason you can't either fix it or float me 80 points
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: I am the only one you are able to contact.
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: take it off my other accts!
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i have plenty on [1] and [2]
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: It's not broken and we can't give out free points because that's not fair to those that have legitimate points
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: can you transfer 80 from me to me?
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: those are MY points and I should be able to send them ingame or you should be able to do that
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: yes send 80 points from my other accts to me
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: That feature is not available
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: so? i am assuming you can do that?
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: or are you just here to be not very helpful and nice for the next 48 days?
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: Your best option may be to play on those accounts that already have the features your looking for
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: cuz yeah that is going to make me want to run right out and support your company NOT
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: I am playing them - and i plan on playing all 4 at once til the end
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: so why can't you transfer points from one acct to the other?
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: my other accts are [2] and [1] - either one is fine
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: [2] has 1130 on it right now
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: Transferring points between accounts is just not possible. There are no tools that allow it
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: I am sorry that your accounts have not all reached the same level of access
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: let me kind of make myself clear. i am a pain in the butt and i will not stop until this is fixed. Google, chat, email, eventually i will find a person who answers the phone and well.....i am a not pleased girl
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: so if you WON'T help me, get me your supervisor
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: Again, I am sorry about your account, but there is noone else and no way to transfer points
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: Threatening us is not going to get us to change the way the game works
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: okay then give me the # i asked for - i want a number where someone answers the phone
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: There is no phone support for this issue
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: what is the extension to get help for the 512 number?
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: There is no phone support for this issue
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: This is an emotional time for all of us
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: I'm not emo, I'm pissed
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: you are offering poor customer service
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: The best we can do is make the best of things while the game is available
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: EIGHT YEARS
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: That's great. I thank you for your support
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: that's awesome, amazing service
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i'll be sure to make sure to send you an email on my last day
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: I understand that you are upset because I cannot give you special consideration
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i didn't ask for special consideration, i asked for my own points THAT i paid for to be transferred over
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i am sure a supervisor could do that
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: Have you been able to transfer points between accounts before?
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: have you been this snarky to customers before?
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: I am only trying to help you understand
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i understand completely
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: I know you are upset, but that is not going to change the tools we have
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: oh i see exactly who er what the tools are
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: thanks for the great support
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: I am sorry that this feature was not working the way you wanted but I hope you are able to enjoy the time we have left.
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: i'll be sure to send you an email with my emotional thoughts on my last day.
[Tell] GM_MeanieFace: I have no doubt
[Tell] -->GM_MeanieFace: oh be sure to look for itwouldn't want it to be missed amongst all the goodbyes
I'm already drafting it in my head. Think it will be 2 words and the last one will most definitely be you. The first one won't be Thank.
Idiots.
I dont think they ever had a feature to transfer points to another account even before the announcement was made. With the changes, I doubt the GM could have done that service even if he wanted to.
I think you were trying to get him to do something that he probably wasnt actually able to do. They cut out the upgrades a while ago, I think the points stopped accumulating and asking to be spotted/transfer, a feature that probably wasnt even created for 80 points is pretty unrealistic. He's just a GM, probably hired to work out bugs and probably not many of them hanging around anymore. I think he handled the situation well and dealing with a pretty rude customer. -
Quote:Yeah, those incarnate powers are nice, but that is at the end of the game.Really? I feel like these days in CoX I feel more significant and powerful than any of the "npc" heroes. And in the mission text they make it seem like you are pretty much one of the strongest, if not THE strongest being on earth(the SSAs in particular really highlight this). My fully IOed and Incarnate-powered hero can solo damn near anything short of a GM, but thats purely because I cant out damage thier regen as a scrapper. I still feel like nothing will ever compare to leaping into a giant mob of villains, firing off vorpal judgement and watching 20-40 bodies hit the floor instantly.
In compare, especially when compared to the likes of say for example Valkyrie, which tend to do ten times or more damage to the mob/player than the player is able to do with the same weapon. In CO the lead NPCs damage output seem to be about on par with what the damage the player can do and withstand. Positron seems like a radiation throwing tanker especially when fighting him, even though he's a rad defender while player defenders are known to be relatively squishy.
When I see an NPC be able to do damage that players can only dream of achieving, it seems like they are on a totally different level of power than players are able to get to. That to me makes the player made and controlled heros seem more like a less powered sidekick than actual hero on the level of the main NPCs. In CO, it seems more on an even level. -
Quote:nice picsHi! This is Antoinette if you remember me from Rogue Magazine! I'm enjoying my experience in Champions Online. Re-created my main toon in CO.
I have my graphics on very high and also playing on my Alienware PC.
This is the underwater shot in Lemuria. No lines:
My new favorite Zone, Vibora Bay! My toon is facing a gate with light:
My favorite part of Canada:
My favorite feature in this game is getting wet! No, not that, I mean you get soaked! This is so realistic! My apartment (Hideout):
Yes, I know all my characters are so skinny!
Also if you want the feel of CoH in combat this is my settings so I'm closer to home (City of Heroes.)

Quote:Yeah, never had a issue with dying been able to handle a pretty nice sized gathering of enemy mobs.You're playing free form right? Get a good block power, an active defense and slotted passive. At level 20 I was able to take on groups of 5 +3 enemies on my ranged damage build (Granted a lot of that was one shotting or near one shotting everything with Ricochet Throw before I even aggroed them half the time.) I feel like characters are much more powerful before the level cap in CO as opposed to leveling characters in COH. Now at level 33 on my second tank build with regen as my passive I haven't found much I can't handle, albeit with slower clearing speeds. Being able to switch between builds on the fly is a godsend in that respect though.
That's fair.
I feel more powerful in CO than COH. Feels like I'm on par if not exceeding the friendly NPCs and tough enemy NPCs. Like the NPCs and contacts seem to interact with the characters as if I'm in their league, another super hero.
In COX feel like there is no way to get as powerful or near poweful of the likes of Statesman, LR, Black Scorp., Positron, Numina, and etc and feel for like an errand person for them than an actual equal. It's like the characters in COX are super heros-the light version that takes on tasks that the real super heroes dont feel like bothering with. -
Well dont want more people to lose their job, but before they go kaputz in the financial part, they have to bleed alot of cash out and since they have lot of cash on hand and very little debt, they probably have a huge credit line. I thik the only way they will have a chance of sinking is if for some reason their Asian market goes totally belly up, but before that happens, they probably will fire anyone they can, and the ones that made the decisions for cutting this game and others will still probably walk away with more money than they know what to do with and probably simply retire and live the rich life while the rest of the employees have to hack it out in the real world. Only people that would lose in that situation is the the people that had nothing to do with the decision to shut down this game.

Quote:basically and well said.Majority - a subset of a set consisting of more than half of the set's elements.
Nexon is a major share holder, the largest share holder but in terms of corporate ownership, not a majority, period. Also interesting is where Nexon got the stock. They didn't buy it off the market or directly from the company but it was from the CEO's personal holdings of which he sold roughly 60% of to Nexon. NCSoft didn't see a penny from this it was the CEO's personal payday.
The quarterly loss wasn't large. Yes it was the first in a very long time, longer than 8 years at least and it was a continuation of decreasing profits over the last several quarters.
Now factor in that the NA and EU regions revenues have decreased by 60% from 2009 to 2011 (and the first half of 2012 shows the revenues falling even more) compared with an 8% growth in Asia. In the first half of 2012 NA and EU revenues dropped 30% from the first half of 2011 where Asia dropped only 10%. So where would you cut? What markets would you concentrate on? This isn't rocket surgery here.
Blade and Soul was already done and was released at the end of Q2. Localizing it to NA and EU is a lot less expensive than developing a new game. Guild Wars 2 was in the final stages of Beta and from all accounts was getting very positive revues. So those two games are off the table because they are done or nearly done and I imagine they would like to see revenues from both of them to offset any development costs.
WildStar is a still a few years away but is under main offices watchful eye, there may also be politics involved depending who in the main office is backing it. That leaves Paragon Studio and CoH. It's an old title. and paid back it's development costs years ago. It didn't even get out of beta in Korea so revenue growth by spreading the game into those regions are doubtful. It's revenues in NA and EU have been decreasing over the years and F2P didn't reinvigorate them.
As for selling it off. First NCSoft had to get their people to come up with a fair market value, for their shareholder's sake, it's sort of required. They may have felt it wasn't worth the cost to compute a fair price. Also besides the game assets we are also talking about the player database, which are customers. One of the most valuable assets a company has is a list of their customers. No business wants to sell off their customer list to a direct competitor. They would likely charge per head for that information and we're talking everyone who ever played or signed up for a demo. They would have to untangle that information from the master accounts and still maintain the links to the player database of characters and purchased items from the store.
But likely none of the offers reached a point that NCSoft would then do an assessment of what the property was worth and it would likely not be finished before the game was shut down. And if a price was reached, the sale made and the game saved, the game would be without any of the existing developers, the new owners would have to rebuild a staff to maintain the game. Three months is just to short of a period a time to build a relationship with NCSoft so they would even consider an offer for the game. You can't just show up in their lobby with a $25 million dollar bank check and have them take you seriously.
