Quote:I really dont blame them for turning that one down. It looks like the author has already condemned them and looking for more fuel for the fire. It's like the author already chosen sides as the Save COH side is right and NCSoft is wrong. It's like a Democrat getting an invite to to a Republican's Democrat bashing session (and vice versa). Or like a meat packing plant getting invited to do an interview from PETA and or the Vegan socity. It smells like a set up. It was smart for them to ignore that one. Maybe one that doesnt look like a reporter on the side of, or at least make it less obvious, that the reporter is already chosen a side. Maybe a little less bias and they might respond. But at this rate, I think the Save the COH thing have antagonized them so much that anything that look remotely like that organization they want nothing to do with and have no plans on answering or even acknowledging any thing they request until they feel they want to. Well when you declare war on a corporation, cant expect them to welcome the cause and consider going along with it happily. That's like cursing out a neighbor because you think his grass is too long and wondering why he dont even speak to you anymore or invite you anywhere or let alone allow to use his lawn mower even though he isnt using it."The Save City of Heroes Campaign Reveals NCsofts Firewall of Silence"
http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...ll-of-silence/
I know other gaming sites like Massively have seemingly already given up the effort to scale NCSoft's Mercy Island fortress-like wall of silence; but they certainly tried.
But, as we say down here in reality, "Your silence speaks in volumes." Let's see what my wallet has to say about th-- Oh, hang on a sec. I'm getting a call.
It's NCSoft!
What's that, you say, NCSoft? Calling just to say you don't care? That you're bigtime now? That you don't need my wallet?
/emote pauses, restrains his anger, and maintains his composure over the phone.
Well, okay. Fair enough.
Wait, what's that?
No, no, no-- that doesn't mean you've just reverse psychology'd me into opening my wallet, NCSoft. It just means we're mutually parting ways.
Wait, what? No, no, no. I won't tell my friends all about your other games.
/emote looks down at his super hero costume and then rolls his eyes at the telephone.
I'll tell them all about City of Heroes. And then I'll tell them all about YOU. Good luck with your realignment of focus, wherever that focus is. Good bye, NCSoft. *Hangs up*
/emote exits the phone booth, and flies out into Paragon City, to solve a few more crimes, to apprehend a few more super villains, to stop a few more wicked plots and schemes... -
yea hseen this earlier. Now that is very funny right there.

man, there is going to be alot of pissed of facebook gamers.
Maybe they can join the Save COH cause and fight this thing together as one. As gamers who is not going to take it anymore. -
Quote:Customization-Good customization to create a character from ground up in looks/costumes and in power selections outside the usual structured power set selections. Wish eventually to have one where the character can have a customizable voice in game.I feel like every games has aspects of it (especially this one), but what are the features of a "perfect" superhero MMO. What game would grab you and engulf you enough to warrant a monthly subscription, a F2P model, or a combination of the two. I guess what I want to know is what features would make you feel as though you are the superhero you always imagined?
Storylines- A good story. If it's going to take itself serious, one that doesnt try too hard to be serious and just is. If it's going to be funny, one that is funny. Just good story lines.
World- Large maps if needed but not a bunch of unused maps that are huge for no reason. And each map have a story to it that is active to the current game. Not some side road that no one goes to.
Powerful character potential- Dont have to be godly, but dont have to be NPCs lackey the entire time. A hero that can go gets his/her own missions instead of relying solely on contacts to tell there there are evil doers lurking.
Enemy groups that are significant and is a threat-None used as filler material.
Variety of mission type-some outdoor some indoor, some under water, some in space, some on the moon, some in offices, some in apartments, some in large homes, some in a bus station, some in a bank, some in a volcano base or something. ANd less ambushes. Ambushes dont equal harder especially if every other mish have an ambush.
Brave villians-While you are powerful, these villians beleive they are a threat to you and willing to fight instead of tucking tail and running at the sight of you. Not very heroic feeling to smash someone that do not wish to fight and rather flee. Let the lowly cops deal with them. Let the hero deal with the villians that are a threat and actually aim to take you out.
Leveling should be done at a good pace whether solo or teaming and all content/storylines should be able to be soloed. Even in super hero lore there are very few heroes that grab a team of each other everytime they want take out some villians. but neither way should be slower or faster than the other.
Interesting villian groups with different goals and will fight each other if they come across one they dont like and work with ones they do like. And each villains group have a well written background story(think I said this already but once again). Nothing worse than a villian group just thrown in there just to be thrown in there unti la contact thinks of something else better.
Defeat all have a real purpose to defeat all. Grabbing a glowy have a real reason for grabbing just the glowing thing. Although it would be interesting to have these things more of a suggestion than requirement. If you defeat all, it may affect the next mish differently than if you left one or two alive to tell the story. -
Quote:See ya.After over seven years (for me), our journey here in CoH is coming to a close. So many people disappeared right after the announcement that I have little hope of finding them elsewhere, so before it gets any later, there are some things I want to say.
This game, this community, this server...it's been my home. Most of you likely don't know me well. I tend to be guarded, speak less and lurk more, but I've been here. I was in shock at first after the announcement, but now, my heart is just broken. I intended to stay untiil they shut the doors, but of late, that's becoming more and more difficult. I'm not saying I'm done logging in or that I won't be there on Nov 30th (and I suggest a massive party on that day), but I am not going to be around much.
My global name is @Lela (for those of you who might know me), and I'd very much like to stay in touch or touch base in other games. For now, I'm moving on to SW:TOR, and later will be getting a TSW account.
I'll be leaving character names for those (and any other) games at http://lelacoxchar.blogspot.com/ and I'd love to hear from you if you venture into those games. Just let me know where you're from, and you're on my friends lists automatically.
After my first year in game, Virtue became my favorite place to be, and I will miss it more than words can say. Thank you all for being so accepting, so inviting, and so much fun to be around.
See you around the internet. -
Quote:nice videoThis has to be one of the hardest videos I've ever made. Not just in terms of scale, but because of its origin... and I cried when it was finished.
This is not my last COH video - I still have at least two more I hope to finish before the closing of the game. But it is my 'farewell' to Paragon City, my home away from home.
YouTube version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9IFDGRp6tk (I advise watching it in HD if your connection can handle it)
Downloadable version: http://www.wanderingcrane.com/Videos.html (400MB download - yes, it's huge)
(PLEASE do not hotlink to the video file itself - if you want to share it, I'd prefer you send people to the YouTube link to save my bandwidth; otherwise, send them to the Videos page)

For those who are interested in such things...
Jo's path (and the alts of mine she encounters): Ouroboros (Mender Anomaly) > Founders Falls (Johanna Sinclair, COUNTERMEASURES) > Pocket D (Rhiannon Vendredi, Queen of Staves, Ante Up, and Andrea Blake) > Talos Island (Takimura Mayumi) > Striga (Profiteer) > Independence Port (Psychic Hotline and Cassandra Dunstan) > Kings Row (Temp Power and Father Lucas Vienney) > Perez Park (Cluster Flux) > Steel Canyon (Sorina Tavarisch and Chastica) > Atlas Park (Rabid Spoo) > Peregrine Island. And yes, each zone actually links to the next (with the exception of Galaxy City, due to its closure).

Quote:naw it was earlier than that, lot earlier than that. Most of my friends quit the forum and avoided them. I was on my way out, then one saidSo it took over three thousand posts between you Evil_Legacy and I Burnt The Toast to come to the conclusion that you dislike the forums? Were you pacing yourselves?
"How are you going to let those trollers and flamers run off a forum, which you pay a monthly feeto post on that they dont pay for you? They dont pay more and you dont pay less. You have every right to be there just like anyone else and opinions are opinions, talk is talk, but only you can let them take thatright from you if you let them. You leave when you are ready to leave and not a second before. Just ignore them and keep it moving."
He was right and thus I stayed, and if you look deep into my post history around mid year 2010 or 11 and later part of 2012 there is gap where there isnt a single post from me and that was during that time period. Alas, I still havent conqoured the "ignore" part. But I plan on being here until Nov 30th. May not like the neighbors, but this is my home too. -
Quote:basically.I actually looked on the interwebs about this LOL! I have been posting in forums for about 16 years now and have always done what is called "Top Posting" where your post is on top of the quote. There is no ONE way that is considered acceptable online is what I have discovered. Some people prefer Top Posting (me) while others prefer Bottom Posting (Tyger) BUT there is nothing saying either is considered universally correct; nor is either way considered universally offensive.
Here is one of the "reasons" Top posting is more common now than it was say when Usenet etc were the main "forums":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_posting
So while some may think it's rude; others do not...but I am pretty sure most people consider farting at a tea party rude. I was bored at work and looked for the netiquette surrounding this and basically found that it is about personal preference. Netiquette regarding forums is the usual; don't spam, don't swear, read the forum FAQ etc: http://forum-services-review.toptenr...ette-tips.html
So I will continue to Top Post until 11/30 because that is how I have done it for 16 years now and it is my preference. If that bothers anyone SO much that they choose to ignore my posts, ignore me, etc... uhmm that's their issue not mine -
Quote:Buddies? Me and Toast? I guess you never seen any of our prior run ins with each other and most are not even around anymore, but through all of that, I always had respect for Toast. You guys buddies, a couple or the same dude dual boxing the forums?
If neither, you guys should consider the first two.
It just he is saying exactly what I have been saying and or would of said anyways. And I'm not a dude. And unlike many I dont only reply to post I disagree on or looks for post to call someone stupid or idiot because I dont agree with them. If I see a post and it's in me to post I will, even if it's something I agree with. And his current idea in his posts, regardless of past relationships and even if he still hates my guts, the idea and statement is what I agree with. I leave personal feelings out of it when replying to an idea whether I agree or not unless someone attacks me first and make it personal. Thus far, you havent nor anyone outside the regular few, thus, I stick to the idea.
Although I'm not too keen on the implying that we are both dudes, which I'm not, and are a couple, which we are not, but meh, I think the wink means joking or something so no harm no foul. I see the intentions and dont look liek it was meant to be mean.
I think I've been talking about how rude this forum has been for a while, according to one person or two. I think we finally just crossed paths with the same idea and now know it isnt just me that noticed it as many have implied in the past.
I noticed that people will always find something to complain about in a post whether it's spelling, grammar, format, length, subject, word choice, view, opinions, facts, evidence, lack of evidence, truths, lies, quotes, and now even placement of quotes. There is no way to please everyone or else there would be no way to make a post so might as well do it as the poster sees fit. Either way, someone isnt going to like it.
Plus placement of quoting is a very small issue not even worth bring up in my opinion, but others feel differently.
Nettiquette? What nettiquette? This forum hasnt shown nettiquette or even so much as ettiquette as a whole in a while and even less in recent times since the famous announcements. -
Quote:Do it even matter where the quote is?If my bottom quoting bothers you that much...LOL
I have ALWAYS bottom quoted - it's not something against you or anyone it is simply how I reply on forums. Comparing it to a real life disgusting habit is uhmm weird. If my reply format bothers you as much as someone farting... LOL
I'll say it again: CoH forums are not unique or special...kinda like the CoH community. You thinking they are does not make them so. I have read stories on other forums how X game has helped autistic children cope with their autism, how games have helped people come out of a deep depression, how couples have met/married/had kids, etc etc... These are not unique to CoH. At the core of most MMOs is a supportive player base and to think it is only a CoH thing is nothing short of conceited.
If you consider my posting style to be rude and use that as justification to act rudely that is your choice. I consider my posts to be realistic and blunt. If you want to be rude go ahead it won't affect my opinion of you or this community...that opinion has been the same for quite some time. I didn't play this game because of it's community...I played it because I liked the game. I don't let other people's rudeness/politeness dictate my experience.
Either way someone will always complain.
I kind of like the bottom quote. You read what the person has to say first then followed by what they are replying to. -

Quote:+1 that. again. My observation of the forums from 2005 through 2011 is what kept me from posting.... It doesn't bother me if people are "rude" to me on a forum, but to say that new posters are always met with open arms here is a flat out lie...I have seen "noobs" torn to shreds for asking so-called "dumb" questions...not just here, but on every MMO forum I have participated in.
Again...nothing special about the CoH community - it's just another MMO community with decent and not so decent posters and everything in between. -
Quote:No, I just assimiated the online culture. I just started to give out what has been given to me. No jerks will be jerks. Most of my posts that wasnt to start a flame and were just normal subjects, jerks still was jerk whether to me, or to other posters. Both of you have had some pretty inflamed posts in the past, more often than not. So have I. I've found that if you're a jerk, people are jerks back. What I find hilarious is when people who speak out in unfavorable ways get butthurt and yell at those who call them on being unfavorable and/or belittle the community because they can't take what they dish out.
I'm not belittling the community but I sure as hell isnt going to act like everything is all cherry and peachy when it's in no way or fashion ever was. Even the PvP section, which I have not posted in yet, I see stuff most of the time there that is not anywhere near friendly.
My actions is probably more of a creation of people being contant jerks than anything but either way, I'm going to call like like I see it and not even really talking about people's reactions to me. That is besides the point. I'm talking about observations and how people treat other people here. Now if you want to add that factor in, then yeah, why would you expect me to even consider this a friendly place? Why wouldnt you expect me to want to sit here and laugh as the community burns? But that's not my thought and not my point there because that is interaction between me and those jerks. But as I said with that not even being a factor, still this isnt the most friendly place in the gaming world. It's no better than the rest of them. In fact I find CO way more friendly than here, and yea I post there too. Other people may have a different view of it and that is fine. The difference i noticed between there and here, is that they handle differing views and respect each other way more so than here. God forbid you say something here that a person dont agree with than they attack the person instead of the idea. There, it's different. And people say here the average age is higher than CO but from the actions I say CO got this community by a few decades. And that's real talk. Now, if you really want me to add personal feelings and how people reacted to me personally to it, then you'll have to just PM me if you truey want to answer. -
Quote:Mortal Kombat. Good games.Revenues in North America were down over 60% from 2009 to 2011 and 30% in the the first half of 2012 when compared to the first half of 2011. Factoring out CoH and GW, those numbers representing Aion and L2 are even worse. How could any negative publicity from our game's and it's studio demise impact those numbers any more than they already are. Sure it could go to zero but right now there isn't a lot a difference between where they are now and zero. All it proves is as gamers, we don't like the MMO experience they are offering. They embraced Starcraft, why can't we embrace grindy MMOs that are heavy on PvP?
So they'll try again but heavy on the boobs and violence. After all we liked Mortal Combat and Dead or Alive fighting games. -
Quote:I think it eroded the confindence of people who had no idea how the MMO world work and forgot that it's not a console game. Yet, whether if it happened with this game or the next, the confidence of those people would have been eroded either way when whatever game they was playing closed down.Uhh no I won't be telling people to avoid NCSoft. MMOs close it is the nature of the beast. CoH had 8+ years which is a good run.
There were not 100,000 signatures to Save CoH - try... 21,088 as of today - NOT an impressive amount imo for such a "healthy" game.
CoH would have been more viable had Project X never happened. As it stands it was barely profitable due to the excessive staff.
My confidence in MMOs has not been eroded in the slightest. MMOs require players...they require profit that meets the demands of the publisher. If they can't do that then they will be closed. NCSoft gave a 90 day sunset which is more than a lot of MMOs that have closed can say.
21,000 out of the alleged high number of subs and viable and healthy game is nothing and probably hurt more than help. It was suppose to show that the gamers of this community was not pleased yet only got 21,000 sigs out of as some people put the numbers, 100,000 players, and some of those signatures are not even this game's player base, some are double signatures, and dont think anything have been done to verify those signatures and seeing how many actual people signed it that didnt double-triple or more account signature and so on. Even with the raw 21,000 and assuming all of them are legit different people, that is still a very small amount for this game according to numbers of subs that been tossed around.
NCSoft, as mentioned before, only did what NCSoft does and have done the past 5-6 or what ever odd number of games closed. Cant blame them for players having confidence in that record and feeling dissappointed when they do what they have been doing for years in the past. If anything, it should of have been expected.
90 days is more than enough notice. After research on how games usually close, most average about 30-60 days, with not many being over 60 days.
Either 21,000 is a significant amount of the actual player base and the other number has been over inflated or outdated, meaning this game was dead in the water for shutdown anyways due to lack of players or 21,00 is insignificant and can be used as a general lack of care about the game sunsetting besides a relatively few that NCSoft probably already figured would be outraged. -
Yeah I level much faster solo to solo in CO than COH. Solo to even 15 takes some time while it's done very swiftly in CO. Teaming wise, not sure, haveing teamed in CO for any significant amounts of time, and teaming at low levels, assuming with a brave team that handles +2 or at the very least +1, then it's quick. Given that it seems the reward bonus for teaming is not much CO side, it would seem teaming to level is where COH have edge. Solo, CO have the edge hands down. And even more so in later levels.

Quote:This is true.#1
I am probably older than you and I have not been a kid for over 30 years.
#2
Not everyone lies - your belief that I am lying says WAY more about you than me.
The CoH "community" that I enjoyed were the 3 friends I have had for years. I didn't even bother with registering on the forums until a year ago because of the complete rudeness that was allowed by the Mods for people with high post counts.
Ask yourself this: If the "community" here on the boards was so frickin welcoming - why is it that 90% of an ONLINE game's community never bothered to register and/or post here? I can answer that for you if you would like... The forums are basically a form of pvp that many people could not stomach. I have visited other forums and they are just as rude as these, they also have a community, they have their romances, they have their children with needs who have been helped by the game, and they have their unicorns assuming people are kids and shelling out unsolicited profiling by ill equipped wanna bes. CoH is not special in it's playerbase or in it's community - it has some helpful people, some morons, and everything in between. It is just another game community.
Like I said: Keep your dime store psychology to yourself... because you have no clue about me, my intentions, or what CoH was to me
So much for the "perfect" community. I aint the only one that noticed. And yeah I know many people in game that refused to bother with forum ever again after trying it just for the reason mentioned above there, Toast. -
Quote:And that is probably the disconnect between NCSoft view as value and probably compared to what they could get with taxes by holding on to it and or compared to what they paid for it when they bought it, compared to what the actual offers are and that are thinking that the game is already 8 years old, and really not trying to wait 3-4 years to break even. A lowball offer to one party may seem reasonable to the one doing the offering but in this case it's seems very one way benefit. NCSoft does not seem to be desperate to get rid of it but some people want to buy it. The ball is really in NCSoft's court with this matter and dont seem anyone had any "real" offers that would satisfy that and any savvy buisness probably aint going to risk paying the worth value and having to wait that long on a turn around for profits. Of course it's possible that they break even prior to that if the game grows but the way it looks, it's getting hollow. Not many players around, many moved on, many have sworn off MMOs for a while, so yea, it's real risky buisness to buy unless the person or buyer is patient and dont mind waiting 4-5 years to break even.
how long would you want to sit on an 8 year old game before making a profit and still feel comfortable as an investor?
How long did it take NCSoft to break even when buying this game? Probably not long but it wasnt overnight, as ?what? they paid probably a whole lot more than 3-5 million that seemed to been jokingly offered to them. And that's was getting a game that was basically near it's peak, and still fully functional. Here now, we are talking about a game that have no dev team, shrinking community and still leaking as the days go on, old engine, and 8 years old and old (doesnt mean it isnt good) by game standards. That is a large risk for anyone that is to pay any significant money and make a profit anytime soon. On the other hand, what would the price that would be offered would be way less than what value they could get if they didnt sell. NCSoft can make something up or even use the good times as evidence of what the game is worth and make a killing compared to the pennies being offered to sale it seems. -
True. but I'm sure there was players that cared just as there are players here that may care. That probably go for any game that is getting canceled. This shutdown seems like a "big deal" to some because we are here. To most on the outside, it's just another game shutting down.
-
Quote:basically and it's really showing now. What NCSoft did was give CoH 5 more years of life.
What NCSoft did was give an extended sunsetting time frame compared to most MMOs that are closed down.
Pretty convenient that people forget those two things. NCSoft did not screw over the CoH players...but you go right ahead and keep thinking that. I choose to look at it from a realistic stand point instead of an overly emotional stand point. CoH was not some thriving community contrary to what others want people to think. It was a small..declining group of players who couldn't be bothered with saving the game until it was too late. Things that led to this point: Inhospitable forums...way too many servers spreading the population thin...lack of advertisement...and a piss poor Hybrid model that encouraged people not to sub... Frankly I was always surprised CoH lasted as long as it did.
Don't get me wrong.. I loved CoH the game, but the "community" I could have done without. Even now the supposed community has become nothing but spoiled brats whining about how NCSoft is evil and took their toys...all while forgetting that NCSoft saved this game when no one else wanted it. -
Quote:yea.Someone who stopped their sub here and came back under Freemium conditions might've found themselves in similar (but probably a bit better in sum) straits. Knocked down to two characters, some of which wouldn't be unlockable due to having unpurchased power sets (or, potentially, locked ATs), and possibly equipped with unusable gear requiring a re-build and re-slot of the character.
And after getting all that sorted out, the game gets shut down on them, so maybe not better in sum after all...
That we're just "renting" in these MMOGs is an unfortunate truth. -
Quote:True, but according to many here, NCSoft reputation in America is dead in the water anyways now. I doubt that is the case, and it will be buisness as usual. But even then I think they will survive even if they completely pull out. Probably not on as large of a scale as they are now, but I dont think the american market is as large to the point it's a make or break them. There are plenty of Asian companies that are public traded that sells not a single product here and is doing just fine. America is a signifcant part of te world economy but it isnt THE world.By a fast look you have an argument. But... please be aware, that failing to place products on the western market has a direct influence in earning money from your shareholders. So if NCSoft West will continue to write red and offer MMOs not selling on the western market, you can be sure it will affect the trust of spending money on the company in Asia too.
So I really do not understand at all, how they can make such horrible decicions, esp. when you offer products in a market, where you rely on the reputation you got from your customers. Games are not necessary to live, it's a fun market where they must face massive competitors. -
Quote:+1 this.Yeah because NCSoft is the only company to close an MMO.
Cryptic (you know the people behind Champions Online)... were the one's who abandoned CoH, but thankfully NCSoft saved it with NCNC later Paragon Studios. Yes BOOO on NCSoft for saving CoH and giving it 5 more years (Which is a lot longer than most MMOs ever last total). Oh BTW Cryptic has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. Then again Cryptic's parent company; Perfect World has just started closing some of their games recently.... And the future of CO is VERY uncertain at this time due to it's financial struggles
Then again you could always move to an SOE game because they never close their games (*cough* SWG *cough* *cough* Matrix Online *cough*). BTW SOE tends to give their players a ONE month notice of closure...that was nice of them...maybe that's what NCSoft should have given CoH players?
Hmm maybe Funcom?? We all know they made The Secret World...and that it performed so poorly in sales that on Aug 22, 2012 (7 weeks after release) that Funcom laid off half the staff due to severe under-performance in sales....But hey if you are unsure about TSW there is always.. Age of ConanThey like to blame Diablo III and GW2 for their lackluster sales.
You could also go to an EA/Bioware game... Stars Wars The Old Republic, but it is losing players at an alarming rate. they are hoping their F2P model can save them (sound familiar?). What does it matter that EA was voted the worst company in America in 2012 by The Consumerist
Blizzard...I mean who doesn't love WoW?? right?
So yeah... go ahead and bash NCSoft...the people who saved CoH when Cryptic abandoned it. Go ahead and bash NCSoft because they are a business who GASP are in the business of making money. Sure go ahead and bash them for the way they are closing CoH; because the notice they did give was more than fair. MMOs close...people need to learn that a GAME is not reality and that it is JUST a game. But you go ahead and boycott NCSoft and when your next MMO closes..boycott that company too..and the next and the next. It's called reality people... CoH could not sustain itself any longer and NCSoft had every right to close it...and they have every right not to sell it.
Me personally.. I am thankful for NCSoft because if it weren't for them the years I enjoyed playing CoH would have ended 5 years ago.
People keep bringing up NCSoft killed 5-6 games, depending on who is asked, as if it's problem. If it was that big of a deal, and they were notorious for "kiling games" I sometimes wonder why did people even bother putting years into this game, especially given NCSoft so called reputation as an "MMO killer".
As some Indian off a show said. "There wasa woman that found a snake frozen in the snow. She took it home thawed it out and nursed it to health, or something like that. Then one day the snake bit here. She asked the snake, "why did you bite me after all I done for you." The snake replied, "****, You knew I was a snake." The point is, if there "reputation" was already there, then it should of been left alone a long time ago. NCSoft is going to be NCSoft and cant blame NCSoft if a person get bit. Their track record already been there. It was the folly of some to ignore it and think it would never happen to them. Yea, if it wasnt for NCSoft this game would of faded into nothingness a long time ago. -
