Quote:Both are bad. Getting a (decent) rez gets you back in the action so much faster than the iTrial hospital, people really should wait for a few seconds. But they shouldn't lay around dead until they've wasted way more time than it would have taken to come back on their own.Quote:I rejoice when people DON'T lie there endlessly, instead of going to the hospital and actually getting back into the fight as they ought to be doing! Lying there endlessly is leeching, in my book.
And yes, Vengeance is 98% useless. Not to mention, I am not going to lie there and hopeity-hope-hope-hope that maybe someone, somewhere on the league has it and no doubt if I lie there long enough, they'll use it...! I'm an Incarnate; I can get MYSELF back from the hospital. Just like I could at level 5.
Yes, there is such a thing as lying there too long, but there's also a comfortable middle ground. I tend to wait about 10 seconds, then hit the hospital. I figure that gives people enough time to notice I am dead, and use Vengeance or rez me if they can. I figure there is a good chance I would have spent that 10 seconds waiting for the door to unlock anyway. -
Quote:They're also not that popular with people who aren't American. When you make the world's most powerful hero so much an American hero, you're making certain implications that some non-American players don't appreciate. It's ok if said hero is more Dr. Manhattan than Superman though, because Dr. Manhattan is not set up as someone to unquestioningly emulate and look up to...so can you blame the players for pointing out Statesman's Dr. Manhattanesque aspects, and resenting the devs for expecting us to treat him like Superman despite them? So, to the character himself: a lot of patriotically-themed heroes aren't popular in a world of 2012 where morality is measured in shades of grey and nationality can be as much a rallying point of fanatacism as it can be nationalism...and sometimes they can be one in the same.

MoKeyes made me, on more than one occasion, want to reach through the screen and slap someone. While there were a few "legit" failures, due to someone making a legitimate mistake, which happens, we failed so many times due to people doing something completely avoidable, such as the squishy who got stunned, didn't use a breakfree, and couldn't move out of the beam, or the guy who used Return to Battle in the middle of the beam, or those many many times someone I didn't recognize showed up, screwed up the run, then "thanks for the trial, g2g" and I never saw them on a run again. I hate the "if anyone screws up nobody gets the badge" badges for that reason. I have failed them more times due to someone else doing something completely avoidable and, frankly, dumb than through bad luck or a legitimate "oops."
On the other hand, I finally got MoLambda this weekend. It's an incredibly stupid badge, but at least we only had to do it once. There was little chance that someone else could screw me out of that badge without deliberately griefing. I'd rather do a really stupid badge once than try and try for a badge that is, in theory, less stupid (you're supposed to avoid the green stuff, after all. It's not aberrant play to do so, and I try to avoid it even on non-badge runs.) but where my success or failure is dependent on the team's weakest link. -
On that note, I hate that people click "go to hospital" the instant they're defeated, so nobody bothers to try rezzing anybody, so nobody bothers to wait a few seconds for a rez, so nobody bothers to try to rez anybody....and you end up in a vicious cycle. There is almost no point to having Vengeance on these things.

Weapon of Mass Destruction, because that is what I try to make my Blasters and Scrappers into. I only wish it had the same name for heroes.
Eve of Destruction for obvious reasons. -
Quote:I actually just had an idea to make it better. Since even the stupidest hero is capable of understanding how to operate complex machinery, we should be able to help him. However, doing so alerts the Sky Raiders/Freakshow/Rikti and causes them to step up their assault, using a similar mechanic to the MoM trial to take time off the timer. Voila, we have the "hurry up and send the next ambush" button that so many people want.I like the idea of involving signature characters of great power in earlier arcs, myself. That way, you can tell arcs of a much bigger story than characters of that level really deserve, because a signature character is being used as deus ex machina to handle most of the heavy lifting, yet still not overshadow player characters because said signature character is too hard-pressed to do much else. Posi struggling to keep the Terra Volta reactor from blowing up and us having to protect HIM as opposed to the reactor is so inspired I'm actually jealous for not thinking of it, myself.
The big thing though, is that each signature hero has their specialty. They also have a reputation that, at lower levels, we haven't earned yet. They should be doing tasks that play to that, instead of "well he can't fight just because." In order for us not to be overshadowed, they have to actually need us. And most importantly, by the time we hit 50 we should be treated as their equals, not the B-listers we currently are. -
Forgetting to turn Superspeed and/or Sprint off. Then I wonder where all my end went.
Forgetting to sell before a TF.
Many of my high-level characters have a ton of toggles, and I tend to turn them on as fast as possible so sometimes one gets accidentally skipped. So I get things like "why are they hitting me so much??? D'oh, Focused Senses isn't on." I also often forget to retoggle auras if I am mezzed. -
Quote:I wouldn't so much want them involved in my storylines, which Statesman most definitely is. It's more like I'm Batman, States is Superman, and eventually there is a shared storyline in which we team up. As it stands in-game though, all of Batman's storylines are secondary to Superman's, and it feels like Batman only gets to do the stuff that Superman considers beneath him.I generally wouldn't want these guys involved in my characters' storylines. On the other hand, I think it'd be neat if we got some story arcs where we got to play *as* the signature characters in their storylines. The SSAs would've been a good place for that sort of thing.
It's sad, but the Rogues Gallery characters, who are heroes and villains just like us, have more personality than the Freedom Phalanx. They really should have treated them like heroes just like us, only with more experience, rather than putting them up on this pedestal of "we're just plain better than you." -
Quote:Or "helping" you defeat something they really should have been able to wipe the floor with, but can't because they're demoted to pet class so as not to overshadow you, which, if you're playing an IOd out character, results in you being far more powerful than the Freedom Phalanx.I get that the game is limited in what it can do, but this is where involving these guys in storylines would have been nice. And I mean storylines that don't end up with them dead, depowered or humiliated.
Remember the old Posi TF, where the last mission was you creating a diversion so the Phalanx could deal with the real threat? They should have had missions where it was the other way around. Why not have States distract uber-buffed Recluse while we take out his towers and weaken him, then, because States is too beaten up, take him out? Or have Posi working to stabilize the Terra Volta reactor in the respec trial, and we have to protect him while he works? Have missions where we're working alongside them and they're doing something that gives a sense of their character, rather than "another unhelpful NPC helper with a braindead AI."
But as for how I would specifically have written Statesman? I wouldn't have made him into the hero, just our hero. I like the idea upthread of having him greet new heroes. I would have made him more personable; maybe it's all just a superficial show he puts on for young heroes and really all distant because all his friends keep dying, but it would leave players with a good first impression of the character, that could be built on later, rather than seeing him as an arrogant jerk who thinks he's better than you and that nobody cares to learn more about.
I wouldn't have made him the big all-powerful uber-hero of the world, and certainly not of the multi-verse. I would have kept Praetoria as a one-shot gag, the Reichsmann TFs never would have existed, and I would eliminate every single bit of lore around Cimerora, up to and including Imperious himself. I'd change the ITF to "click here to fight mobs" if need be, just to get rid of that mess. I would rewrite the RSF to have you do something so bad the Freedom Phalanx has to show up to stop you, rather than you helping Recluse settle a grudge with his ex. And I would have him respec out of Handclap. -
I don't mind the pink circles, they're easy enough to avoid, it's Mother Mayhem's massive AoEs of "oh look you're dead again" I hate.
I also hate Captain Hotpants, especially leading her and her massive army of roaring lag-monkeys around on UG, where she will attack things the league would rather not bother fighting. And I hate the lag on Lambda, still.
I also hate the braindead badge requirements on Lambda, the "if even one of these sixteen people makes a single mistake you're all screwed" badges on Keyes (having spent every weekend for several months trying to get them, and having just that happen every single time....when it wasn't somebody who just didn't care signing up for a badge run, screwing it up, then suddenly "gtg, thanks for the trial") and the grindy nature of the nightmare badge in MoM.
I haven't had a chance to do TPN yet, but I'd probably hate the "wtf just killed me?" aspects of it, and the very idea of being killed by civilians with rocks that you have to protect or else is an instant point against the trial. Actually, storywise the TPN is the stupidest trial yet.
Edit: Speaking of "wtf just killed me?" I really really dislike this in UG as well...mostly because I know exactly what killed me, and it was one person who didn't think to move. Brute-locked idiots not paying attention and getting everyone held in BAF also annoys me, but doesn't seem to happen as much, since there's usually someone to actually taunt the AVs off Mr. Punch-happy. -

It also says "I'm wearing this because there are only two long hairstyles for guys and the other one is all scraggly and clips with my black trenchcoat."

Yes, I am noticing that when I'm facing the base the lag gets worse, but sometimes it's unavoidable, especially with desks. Because they want to stack on top of each other. I do try to zoom in as much as possible and edit from above.
That vent room is only around 1200 items, and both of the bases I'm working on are still under 10k, however my computer is super ultra mega crappy. They will both be well above 10k when finished though, so I'm also asking in order to minimize lag while in use when they're done. -
I'm starting to run into lag when editing my heroside base, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to minimize it. My search-fu is weak.
Things that I know contribute to lag:
Stuff that moves.
High polygon count items. I know shelves are bad for this, but are there other items that are known to be lag-inducing?
Flicker. Unfortunately, I can't completely avoid it in my design, only cover it up.
Is there anything else that is known to add significantly to lag, or any ways to minimize it, especially while editing? I'm not having a problem moving around the base, but editing can be very irritating, especially since I'm placing a lot of desks. -
Quote:Actually, I've said this before, but I think they should be forced to use Architect to sketch out their arcs before they even start thinking about adding special mechanics and unique maps. This would force the writers to think of the story first and add mechanics to help tell it, rather than coming up with a cool new mechanic and shoehorning a story in around it.Something just occurred to me. For the longest time, I've had a problem with the game's writing, and I think the problem is that whoever is "writing" the story is actually thinking more in terms of how to make a decent Architect arc rather than how to make a good story. The encounters in the missions work, the story is written around them well and it makes for decent action. But there doesn't seem to have been any actual STORY written down as such, just an Architect user writing an Architect arc focused on gameplay and not story.
Fusionette is an idiot. Her dialogue and story actions support this. When someone spouts lines like "quit looking down my dress or my boyfriend will beat you up" they will not be liked. Sefu Tendaji has annoying powers, and he gets captured twice in the RWZ storyline, and yet he manages to avoid being the butt of constant jokes. -
And that is why my answer to questions like these is always "none of them." If they want to write garbage, they should stick to writing their own garbage, not taking someone else's perfectly good storyline or villain group and twisting them beyond recognition to fit the latest Shiny of the Month.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb. Nyah.
Quote:Villains get to launch one, so heroes don't even get their 0.5.Villains 3, Heroes 0.5 (I have to give the Heroes some credit for stopping the missiles, but WHY couldn't a separate group try to retrieve Alexis while that was happening?!)
Quote:What good is ruling the world, when there is no world to rule?
Quote:And honestly, if what you said is the case? Then it's incredibly poor writing on the part of the devs. Who's going to care about the Arc on Blueside if they don't feel motivated to play it because the writing forces idiocy?
Quote:Well you have to understand that the story is told in this game relative to your level, which is the entire idea of exemplaring down. At level 40 you don't know what your character would know IC at level 50. I am not saying that it is a good system of defending it but that is the mindset you have to approach the game with if you want the story to make any kind of sense. -
Quote:Most people didn't even get to play with the stupid clunky interface, because the way the editor works giving everyone in the SG editing permission is just asking for disaster.Well he's wrong there, the players didn't hate the idea of bases, they hated the STUPIDLY CLUNKY INTERFACE YOU HAVE TO BUILD THEM WITH!
Also dear old Jack was the one that went, "what, people use the bases for roleplay purposes and not PvP?" like it was some sort of shock of the century to him.
Players might have been more open to the idea of base PvP if it wasn't such a pain to set up an instant raid, and they hadn't hyped up a raid system where other people could destroy all your stuff. -
Oh yeah, and the obvious: AE. I'd like to see them actually add some stuff for authors to use instead of just nerfing farms that have been around for six months and going back to ignoring it. Custom death animations for custom critters would be nice, as would the ability to set standard minions and lieutenants as a "fight a boss" objective, or use high-level Devouring Earth or the AV-class Kronos Titan, among other things. The list is long and long ignored.
-
1: More repeatable missions, that go up to level 50, with a wider variety of enemy groups. At the very least, all the appropriately-levelled enemy groups should be available in the paper, and in regular missions, not just some "stop the Pawn Shop robbery" mission that hardly ever comes up. And get rid of the rescues and kidnaps, nobody ever does them.
2: More tip missions, especially at 40-50. Simple ones, not the fancy ones with a million scripted encounters that aren't properly tested and lead to things like two ambushes hitting you before you're done zoning or an NPC that you have to talk to dying and making the mission uncompletable.
3: Finish power customization.
4: More sets with taunt auras for Scrappers. Nobody likes runners. -
Quote:I feel it's generally more appropriate to ignore, and not quote her so that people who do ignore her don't have to read her tripe, but that's just me.Yeah, but GG didn't add that context, so I felt it appropriate to counter.
Quote:I don't particularly like fighting Silver Mantis because I always feel bad touched, NOT BECAUSE she's a masochist (there is nothing wrong or weird with them, you get off on what you get off and the only person being hurt is them and that's how they like it) but because she's involving you in her sex act without your actual permission.
Yes, but if you state that people of a certain race like something that only stupid or drunk people would otherwise like, you are implying that the people of this race are on par with stupid and drunk people. Ergo, racist. -
Quote:If you linked to a video of a real life crime it would also be deleted, even if we can commit the exact same crime in-game.My two cents. The dialogue does seem somewhat iffy in one manner. If any of us here were to link to a video which showed a woman being beat up and moaning out that sort of dialogue then that post would most likely be deleted. And we would likely receive a pm stating that it was not appropriate for a rated T forum. Then again the forum mods on occasion can be as sensitive as grandmothers at a church function.
She is depraved by BDSM standards. The kind of BDSM practiced by fictional villains is generally only superficially similar to anything practiced by real people in real life. -
I'm still waiting for Super Stunners. You'll have to get in line.

Once per lowbie. My badger already has the badges, so I won't be exemping down for it ever again. I hate having all my powers greyed out. As for levelling, I don't really make a lot of alts so there are a lot of low-level AE arcs that I haven't played yet. Then again, I don't really care all that much about levelling speed.
