    Ascendant!!!

Nice! I saw this same phone call last week and had copied and pasted it for a SGmate who wanted to know what he said, hehe. I meant to post it on the forums, but... I completely forgot to!
I did say hi in game though... hi out of game, Ascendant!!

    Also, Ascendant...
When you were doing this phone call and they hung up on you in the middle of that great speech... It really gutted me. Don't worry, that's a great thing.
And it wasn't uninspiring or anything... it was just the reality that, yeah, they hung up on the Ascendant, despite all the good and truth in what he was saying and the hope and promise he has and we all share with him.

It still hits me when I read it again.
    Awesome job!
    Thank you!
    We're all in this together!
We're being heard and we have A LOT more fight in us!

I screwed it up the first two times, but the third time was the charm. Keep an eye out; I plan on doing several repeat performances.

Like everyone else, the news that the game may (and notice that I said may) be shut down is heartbreaking, and the past week I've had a hard time bringing myself to the boards or even in the game because I have so many great memories from over the past eight years. But that's only doing myself a disservice.

I count myself lucky to have found this game, but that is dwarfed in comparison to the great fortune that comes with getting to play it with the rest of you. I've known since beta that the game cultivated a special sort of community-- optimists, storytellers, and energetic dreamers, but never was that truth more clearly enunciated than it was yesterday, when it was announced that not only were there an unprecedented 33 instances of Atlas Park on Virtue, but the server were over 300 more people in the queue and 8 Atlas Park instances on Freedom.

I suppose that in the coming weeks, I could just turn my back and just walk away, cold turkey. In a lot of ways, that might be easier. But if I did that, I'd be denying myself the opportunity to spend just that much longer with the most amazing and remarkable community I'm likely to encounter in my lifespan. Further, if I'm to hold to my theory that the goal in life is, or at least, should be, to have fun, and as long as there's still fun to be had in the game, I plan on enjoying it.

I hope you will all choose to join me.

With any luck, we'll put together an EPIC Task Force team on December 1st.
    I'm right there with you!
  2. Hmm... I am trying to figure out... Would it be their Paragon City, their lives and the people they protect? Or would it just be a video game and they'd be separate from that?

    *Brain needs clarification!!*
  3. As for the ownership of characters and all of that, I very much have similar thoughts as Oedipus Tex (you really only approach trouble if you use obvious, specific art assets from the game. If it is generic costume bits, don't worry... but if the character has the exact Critix helmet or something... you're using someone else's art assets. Also, other than extreme cases or blatant ripoffs, like I mentioned previously, it's really not about going after people who have outside success with characters created in their game. It's more about protecting their rights to use those characters from with their game [such as, in picture add for something for their game, or on their website, etc.]).

As for the laws/rules themselves, a really simple way to look at it is like this: When you work for a studio (let's say Disney)... part of the contract is basically - "everything that you create, draw, design while you are working for us... it ours... not yours to keep... it is the property of Disney".
They provide the assets and the means to create the thing... and they claim legal rights to it.

I honestly don't think it is anything to worry about. I don't even think that the courts would likely side with them in most cases (never mind that they probably would never pursue such things).

Still... best not to replicate blatantly original art assets of the games that you play when manifesting your own creations elsewhere.
  4. As far as money and points... I'm not in this boat, but I just think about all the many people that must have spent money on points in order to obtain Reward Tokens in order to unlock the Tier 9 VIP costumes and such.
As someone that refused to dump that kind of money just for points (I haven't even spent all of the points I earned via being VIP, so I certainly had no need for that many additional points), I'm not sure what I think is right in those regards.
You spent the money at that time... how long is long enough to give a person time to spend those points? How long is not long enough? I'm not sure at all. I'm glad I don't have to figure that out for either side, to be honest.

I do know that I feel that there is no way that this product should be ending, but that's a different story.

Anyway, I will be supremely surprised if all remaining subscription is not paid back. Beyond that... I don't expect anything back for people. I could be wrong on all accounts, of course.

Regardless, they're taking some time before relaying these details. I'm in no rush to hear these final details though... as I am more concerned with preventing this game (and all that creates and surrounds it) from coming to an end.
Afterwards, the chips can fall where they may. And then I'll judge the fairness in that! No point in judging details that have not been released or conveyed yet.

    Sure, I'd rather be wrong.

(But I do think, in the event that I'm right, that we ARE the community for the mission.)
Oh, sure. It was just the start.
A very nice, introductory, "HELLO", if I may say so myself.

Seriously though, we're all just showing that we care about Paragon Studios, this game and this community. I mean, unless things get worked out and reversed super quickly, we'll have no choice but to continue doing what we obviously must do.

I doubt most any of the people involved in trying to make a stand and fight for this game/community are doing it for any other reason than... It's what we feel we must do.

I'm babbling... This is a very silly thread to be having any such discussions...

    EDIT:
Oh, just going to add that I think a great focus (and what most of my comments around the internet and to whatever media will listen have been focused on) is the small business that has a history and future of profit and satisfied customers.
That is something that has been going the way of the do-do and is something that a lot of people are concerned about.
Not that I disagree with other aspects of why this game deserves to be preserved.
It just seems to be a rather compelling and relevant aspect. Think about how hard the Paragon Studios staff has worked on this game. Think about how excited people have been for the future content they have in the pipelines. Think about how this business venture was not losing money (and think about how much money is involved in this, in the grand scheme of things, it may not be billions, but it is far from small potatoes).
This is all just a matter of a billion dollar corporation not having interest in a large amount of people (employees and customers), because it isn't a big enough profit for them. That is fine and completely their right to pick and choose their own business endeavors.
We just want the team and the product to have a fair chance at continuing via being sold to new backers or whatever avenues can be explored/achieved.
No reason to burn these books if someone else is willing to build and maintain a new set of shelves for them.

    *end of additional babbling*

Everyone (besides those intentionally trolling), just relax.
None of us can convince everyone of anything.
And do not take negative reactions (no matter how incorrect or unfair they may be) too hard.

I've been in the entertainment business all of my life (It's cute when 9 year olds say that, btw)... and I find the biggest (yet most consistent) challenge is the art of handling rejection.
Most successful careers look something like this: rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, success, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection (If you keep doing what you do after you reach what you would define as "success").

A few bits of bad mouthing about our demonstrations and efforts to keep this product and development staff alive? That's absolutely nothing.

Cheer up. We're doing relatively well.

    A LOT of leeway...

At this point I've not received any details regarding a refund process, what you can get a refund for or how to go about requesting one. As soon as they pass along those details, myself or whomever is left will definitely communicate that.

For now, I can't do anything but advise you to wait until NCsoft has communicated that information.
Thanks again, Zwiller! This is what I've figured and, yeah... eventually, they'll release further word. I'm a patient person.

This much I also figured. Thanks for expressing it (both to us here and to them).
  10. Indeed. This game has remained profitable. This community has remained loyal, happy to spend money and stayed a consistent size (which, again, has remained profitable).
The game, itself, has constantly advanced and been respected as an innovator and one of the few successes that is not following the industry's stale formula.
Tons of additions are already in the pipelines and many more have been in the works.

None of that should come to an end right now.
We may be considered a smaller, niche customer-base, but that doesn't mean that we don't matter and it doesn't mean that this product cannot continue to make the profits it has (or even increase... super heroes continue to get a larger audience... Look at the Avengers movie).

Now is an absurd time to end this successful product and great community.

Those are my 2 cents, at least... plus tax.

Great googly moogly!! (it's just the most appropriate reaction, it seems)
That is so many times awesome!

Only complaint... I didn't see ME!

    Fantastic, Leandro!!!!
  12. Paragon is a prosperous city! It is an innovator and it is enjoyed by many tens of thousands of people! It is rich with history and full of future promise!!! It deserves to go nowhere but forward!!!!
  13. 11 Atlas Parks at 3:22PM Eastern Time.

Yes, Nigel... ours goes to eleven!
  14. I shoulda worn bright colors today...

Peregrine Island alone has more characters in the name than Atlas Park 10.
Haha, I believe he was kidding!
  16. Going through the same here...

    Yep, it's crashed!
Ah well, not our goal, for sure.
  17. Did anyone else crash? Did we crash the server?
  18. *love*
I'm in AP2 right now. So far I'm seeing 7 Atlas Parks... most were full but 7.

Anyway, awesome job with the image... And DR, that sounds like a great idea!!
  19. Simply put, I wish this game had an offline mode. Everything there and accessible, just run from my own computer and no internet connection.
I'd buy that, and play it regularly, zero question.
  20. I didn't expect to read this just now, but I ended up doing so! I've been contemplating a "book" of my own about my experiences here, but it'd probably only be half as long!

First, I just want to thank you for your contributions to the community. It is very much appreciated!!

And, it is funny... for the most part, your playstyle and mine couldn't be much more farther apart. The delving deep into the numbers for maximum optimization and such, as well as the completionist/near-ocd aspect that you mentioned yourself are pretty much opposite my extremely casual, numbers-mostly-be-damned, not really think much about anything other than immersion, joy, role-playing and character concepts/background/development... Aha! As I continued to read, there was more similarity, after all.
Plus, I also grew up playing old game systems together with my friends. My brother and our nextdoor neighbor basically all lived playing together (Apple iie, Atari 800, Atari 2600 and on...).
I wish we all had continued to play together, as you have with your friend... perhaps we may still reconnect some day and do as such.
Regardless, I can relate to how much of a lifelong impact that has had between you and with this game, specifically.
That is no small thing, at all.

Another thing I can really relate to from your post is the forum experience. I'll not go on and on any more (I'll save that for my own "book", haha), but interacting with this community has been a great resource for more than just the game information and culture. Learning more and more about communicating and interacting with others in this form has been a great aspect of these forums for myself.

Anyway, I think we may have interacted once or twice, possibly while you were first stepping into the broader ranges of discussion around here. Of course, we'd probably be on some opposing points of views about design and such... but I share your utter dislike of incorrect "facts" and subjective opinions stated as facts. And I certainly came to find yourself to be a reasonable poster and member of this community.

My hastily typed out response here aside... Thanks for sharing and I hope the unknown is filled with a lot of pleasant replacements (for lack of a better term). I too am glad for my time here and know that all of my characters will continue on (possibly in writing).

    Excelsior!
