I used to run a dedicated 8xMM team, back in the days before AoE minion upgrades. We leveled all the way to 50 together.

The cave missions were like a bad movie. It was so ridiculous it stopped being painful and just turned funny.

Then there's the "99%" angle - consumers vs big companies.
Or, if you want a nationalistic angle, an American game based on one of the most iconic aspects of American pop culture is being ditched by a large multi-national corp that just doesn't get it, with the loss of 80+ American jobs.
Then there's the social networking angle, with Twitter and Facebook being used to organize a rescue attempt.
And then there's also the fact that people just plain love an underdog story - along with the theme of the endangered game being players fighing to save the world from fictional villains are now having to fight to save their virtual world in real life.
The extemely open and accepting nature of the community and the game that lets you be anything could also generate attention from several news sites with a cyber bullying/homophobia/female friendly/family game angle.
All of these are are worth trying to pitch to somebody. I'm just not sure who. Another question is: does an organized body like Titan Network have a better shot at getting a foot in the door at a gaming news site than an individual (or several individuals)? My guess it yes, but I'm honestly not familiar with the process those kinds of websites use to determine their content.
  3. We should try to convince Z to sticky this.

You really need to prove the social good of the organization in order to get the 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. While we all would see a benefit from the game continuing, I think keeping the game alive would be a hard sell to the typical IRS agent reviewing the application. You would probably want to argue that it is like preserving a historic landmark, but again they would see 8 years of operation and not see that as historic.

I could of course be wrong, but having spent my career in the nonprofit industry and had more interaction with the IRS then most people would ever wish, I think that it would be a long shot. You are probably better off setting up a for profit corporation and getting money through crowd funding (kickstarter, etc) or through selling shares of the business to investors.
The folks over at the Star Wars Galaxies Emulator (SWGEmu) project managed to attain nonprofit organization status, so it isn't unprecedented.

What if they actually were being charitable.

If a charity for the preservation and proliferation of City of Heroes was set up, then if they donated the IP (and possibly code) to it, it might well be that the 'full' value (which they would probably never hope to realise otherwise) would then be tax deductable. That might just be more lucrative to NCSoft than the amount that we could raise to buy it.

Donations/subscriptions to the charity could then, in theory, be used for game development.

Not sure if that would work, would depend on the various tax and charity laws. Just desperately trying to think outside the box.
Anyone have contact info for the folks involved with Real World Hero? They might be able to use this angle.
  6. I don't know if this can work, but I know it can't hurt to try.

    I sent him an email.
  7. One other thought for TonyV:

Please post updates as edits to the OPs in these threads instead of replies, that will be much easier to track.
  8. If anyone would like to reach me, you can do so at DraethDarkstar at yahoo

Email or instant messenger, but please send a message with your add request if you add me on messenger, I always ignore blank ones that I'm not expecting due to spammers.

    Edit:

Since it's in fashion, my Steam is also DraethDarkstar

I'm too depressed to create any more eloquent words than I already have today, so I'm going to borrow these with an unceremonious /signed.

I would be wiling to continue paying a monthly fee to keep this game alive and donate to a Kickstarter or something if you can make it work.

    To all of you...

Thank you for being the best Community Manager I have ever seen or spoken with in my fifteen years of playing MMORPGs. I wish you all the best, Zwil.
  11. Wow, I'm... literally dumbfounded.

I played Ultima Online through it's murder at EA's hand when they introduced Trammel.
I played Star Wars Galaxies until the day Sony killed it with the New Game Enhancements.
I played Shadowbane until Ubisoft shut the servers down.

I have never been even remotely as crushed by the death of a game as I am by this announcement. City of Heroes has been a passion and a joy of mine for as long as it has existed. The unique and innovative design of this game has been one that resonated with me like no other.

My heart breaks for the employees at Paragon Studios. I really wanted to work with you all there some day, but the death of that dream is nothing compared to the loss you all must be going through right now. I am deeply sorry that NCSoft has pulled the plug on you all, and thank you all with every bit of sincerity in the world for the amazing work you have done these last 8+ years. A great thanks also to Castle and Back Alley Brawler. Your involvement in the community during your time working for the game really made me love reading these forums.

To my fellow forumites: I have not been the most active poster, but I am an avid reader. It has truly been a pleasure getting to know you all in at least the limited fashion that we interact here. I would especially like to thank:
    • Arcanaville, for her brilliant mathematics and witty posts
    • Aggelakis, Thirty7, Guy Perfect, Eabrace, Blondeshell, and all the other wiki editors for their efforts to the community (and all the help you've all given me with my own contributions over the years)
    • Diellan, CodeWalker, and everyone else who's worked on Mid's Hero Designer over the years before them
    • Memphis Bill, Samuel Tow, and JayboH for the entertaining conversations we've had on the forums here and there
    • Everyone I've ever played with on Virtue. You've all been marvelous.

It has truly been a pleasure and an honor. I am deeply saddened that it has to end this way.

  12. Used the last one on the list there.

As a note, I couldn't get into my master account in Firefox, the NCSoft Account Migration page with the "Migrate Later" button on it wouldn't activate. I had to use Explorer.
  13. I just noticed when I went to make my purchase that the individual IOs are marked down at 25%, whereas the sets are marked off 50%. Before I go through with the transaction, I would like to know if that was an intentional reduction in the sale price, or if it was a case of mismatched numbers (and if so, will it be changed)?

I sent Alpha Wolf a PM asking the same, but if he doesn't happen to see it and one of the Community Managers notices this post, could the question be passed on, please?

I would likely buy several Miracle, Numina, and Performance Shifter procs if the individual parts were on sale. I might even consider buying a couple of the +Heal and the +EndMod from those sets for the convenience of having them level scale for my alts, but I'm just not willing to pay >$2 apiece for enhancements and I won't use 4/6 of the sets.
  16. I will state as I did last week that I would be much more inclined to buy SBOs if you hadn't stopped discounting the individual parts of the sets that are on sale. The convenience factor of being able to pick up a couple of the expensive/rare pieces is outweighed by being forced to pay for an entire set that I won't use.
  17. Draeth Darkstar

    New Powerset

Based on your list there, you may want to think about using the tools available to you in-game already to make that character.

An Illusion Control/Radiation Emission/Ice Mastery Controller with the Flight and Teleport Pool powers should cover the majority of your request.
  18. For the "Tankiest Tank" you're probably going to want Staff Melee, actually. Staff has both a +def and +res buff in it, both of which are strongest on Tankers.

Barring that, Dark Melee has a lot of -tohit and a self heal, and Stone/Axe/Titan have a lot of KD/KU for mitigation.

Personally, I'd make a point of making the following combinations:

Titan/Electric Brute (TW enjoys significant benefit from the end. management and +recharge in Elec)

FM/ or DM/Shield Scrapper (Both are raunchy combinations for raw damage-dealing, Fire has better AoE, Dark has better ST).
  19. Bots/Traps or Bots/Time MM

    Dark/Dark, Water/Dark, or Fire/Dark Corruptor.

    Earth/Storm or Fire/Storm Controller.

Ah, yes, the final nail in Force Field's coffin. I hope they get around to doing something about that before this happens.

    Water Works

Poison works well from a visual standpoint for a Water pairing, though as far as mechanics go, it leaves something to be desired for a lot of players.

I went with Water/Storm (elemental type character) and Water/Time (recolored red, playing as a blood mage).
  22. The individual pieces of the enhancement sets on sale are not marked down. This is inconsistent with previous sales - is this an oversight or a new policy?
  23. The other nice thing about the Accurate ToHit Debuff sets is that they effect almost all of its powers. Pets' powers only inherit enhancement values (and procs) from sets that could be slotted into those powers.
    • Simple to build and play
    • Cheap and easy to softcap
    • +20% passive Global Recharge, no conditions or gimmicks
    • Towards the top of the pack for survivability on SOs/HOs.
    • Doesn't have loud VFX, can be totally invisible outside of PVP zones
    • Maxed DDR protects you from one of the most crippling debuff types in the game
    • Totally "hands free" unless you can't use your autocast on the mez protection click, in which case you only have to hit one button every 1-2 minutes for your entire secondary
That's all I can think of offhand.
