Quote:Well... Consider other posts in this thread interpreting Stamina as something besides just basic human fitness. Zaloopa, for instance, makes a pretty astute re-interpretation of Stamina for the Steel Rook, as basically the representation of the power armour's greater staying power, which is a very fair point. But if we can interpret Stamina loosely enough to claim that, I'm sure it's simple enough to explain away how an old man who uses psionics is better at "fighting in close quarters" with special psychic techniques, as well as how a girl who uses gadgets can use those gadgets in close combat. It's not always necessary, but if it became so, it's easy to explain. Now, if you're very particular about "boxing" in general... Well, Super Strength's alternate animations are already kind of half-way there. In fact, they do a much better job of depicting boxing than the "Boxing" power.Quote:Because I bring up Inna again - her being able to fly and channel energy through her body is not a "super" power. It's part of what her species is able to do. It is, as I'm fond of saying about that particular character, "hers by right of blood." A focal point of her entire character is that her nemesis cannot use the power she wields while Inna still lives, basically. There are no circumstances that I can imagine where she would lose her power... And yet still be alive. Thus, for her, to take down opponents in a physical confrontation is achieved via energy-channelling punches.
Quote:I don't dispute what you're saying, not in spirit. But it's really only true for a subset of characters. And considering the dev team graciously re-wrote the Natural Origin description to include "or maybe you're not human at all," I do believe that's an aspect of the game that needs to be kept in mind. Do new powersets and/or power pools make sense for non-humans. And you don't even have to go wildly out of line to think of weird examples. Just consider - would it work for a robot?
Quote:Yeah, you CAN make the argument that maybe a character is an expert archer but is crap in a fight and will just get grabbed by the upper arm and dragged off to a dungeon
Quote:Because let's face it - right now, Fighting asks us to be good at brawling INSTEAD of shooting energy out of our hands or flying. That shouldn't be a choice in a super hero game. NOT being fit just isn't necessary for this type of game.
So, i agree that the fighting attacks are problematic as they don't give benefit if you already have lots of attacks. Thats why I think some 'hybrid' style autobuffs associated with them would work, so training in fighting enhances all of your attacks. Even something simple like a dam buff for learning boxing and a to-hit buff for learning kicking (or vice versa) would be fine, like a set bonus from IOs. That way people who needed the extra attack still get it, and other people can become better at fighting using their own fighting style. -
Quote:Nope, unless you count stealth as a travel power. I do use the Ninja Run/Beast Run where appropriate. I do usually mix and match with Travel powers, things like Hover/Teleport, Hover/Super Jump, Combat Jumping/Superspeed.That's kind of where the metagame takes precedence, though. Yes, I could use Hover and Afterburner... Probably, but even at its fastest, Hover is still slow and it takes a lot out of my build to make it faster. Taking Fly is a simple way to gain basic convenience.
That actually brings up a related question: Do you always take a travel power?
Quote:Because I always do. SOMETHING will always make sense for the character. Basically, if the character can't teleport or fly, he gets Super Jump because... Well, he's good at jumping. Now, Sam Tow - my namesake - is supposed to be by FAR the best at jumping of them all. Through a variety of technological and scientific means, he's able to perform ridiculous leaps from a standstill, such as reaching high-altitude aircraft from the ground without actually having the ability to fly. He's supposed to be a lot better than all my other characters combined... But the game doesn't really make that much difference, so all he used to do was take and slot Hurdle. Now that everyone has it... Meh. I'll stick to pretending. I'll never team two characters on my account together anyway.
Quote:And that's kind of been my beef with pools, to be honest. There are almost none of them that DON'T make sense for nearly all characters to have them. Fighting, Fitness...
For Fighting, I'd think it would be thematically appropriate for characters if, in a situation where their super powers/weapons were disabled, would still be able to take some opponents down in a physical confrontation.
Quote:But let's say Teleportation. To me, it simply doesn't make sense for, say, my namesake - Samuel Tow - to be able to teleport. That ability is nothing like anything I've ever written for him.
Quote:Similarly, Leadership isn't something I'd give him, for the simple fact that he's your typical emo loner, to make a grand concept embarrassingly simple. I could probably reshuffle some of his background to account for it, yeah, but I wouldn't want to. It just doesn't make sense for the guy. -
Quote:Just take Hover on the one who couldn't fly fast? Slotted, you can sprint about in it fairly well without being anywhere near Fly speeds. There's no real way to express this, especially now that unenhanced Fly caps flight speed, but even before... What was I supposed to do?
Quote:If Fighting became inherent and all of your characters just magically had it, would any of your concepts (concepts, NOT builds) suffer? Honest question.
In terms of "Even better at X", the comparison (for me) is the character itself, if they hadn't spent the time learning it. They can choose, rather than developing new uses of their main powersets, to spend time learning to be even better fighters(e.g. like the X-Men or Ben Grim do). -
Haven't seen any particularly good deals, but if you were going to go for Amazon, the Acer Aspire Timeline X 5830TG is about £60 cheaper than the one you were looking at, with more or less the same specs(EDIT: the prcessor is a bit slower) (I believe the graphics card are near identical).

I don't see the self rooting thing being much of a negative, praticularly with the cooldowns described. You'd stealth to one spawn, set up, blast them, take 10 seconds to run to the next spawn, repeat. It'd just be a bit annoying.
One option might be to make them a truly ranged class by reducing the effectiveness of their ranged powers in melee range. Would probably be doable by having them have an auto PBAoE that either granted enemies resistance/defence to their attacks or like a reverse invincibility and debuffed them if enemies were in range. -
Why care what other people tell you to do with your character? Why care about the opinion of someone stupid enough to insult you because of a minor power choice?
Actually, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever taken Tough or Weave. I've taken Kick on a few characters but not boxing (If I want a melee attack I'd generally take air sup) -
Fighting is supposed to make you better at fighting, right? So, what if Boxing and Kick also gave procs to all your (maybe only melee) attacks? Either a bit of extra smashing damage or a chance for stun/knockdown? So, if you weren't going to use the attacks directly, you still get better at fighting generally.

Quote:According to the wiki, the booster pack code should still be honoured.Since they no longer sell the Booster Packs I don't know if they still let you choose between the Cyborg and Magic Booster packs that came with the AE edition.
Darn, thats actually awesome way to start someones CoH experience!
EDIT: And it gets better.
Add the GvE Edition to that bundle for only another $7.99. That gets you another month and The pocket D stuff and two extra costumes. So 4 months and a crepe ton of stuff for about $33. And then (if its in your budget) possibly add in an extra $10 for the Starter kit for another month. -
Hmm.. not sure how it works now but... On Amazon you can get Going Rogue: Complete, CoV: Collectors and Architect Edition for $25.35 (so free shipping). I assume all the old stuff from that is still valid, in which case thats $25 for 3 months worth of subscription (and so 4 reward tokens, I think). Combine that with the refer a friend program, to give them another 500 points (and a free month for you).
Anyone know if that would work? -
... after over 8 years, 'The Man Who Moves at the Speed of Dark' looks right!
Its been tested enough, just put it live now! -
Enough to annoy some people? Yep. If I'd wanted a fury bar, I'd have made a Brute. You'd be undoing peoples choices for them, without asking. And for no benefit that I can see. If this were done, how would the game be better than it is now?
-
There doesn't appear to be any particular advantage to combining them (Other than the 'advantage' of having one less option to pick from), it would be development intensive to do (which would be better spent elsewhere) and would mess around with peoples established characters (which would annoy some people).

I just did this for the first time on my Dual Pistols/Trick Arrow Corruptor, died a few times but all the NPC helpers helped a lot and manged to pull the final EBs seperately, so it certainly is soloable.
I do like the suggestion that arcs with 'teaming suggested' missions should have the warning at the very start, though. -
Sounds really good, can't wait!

Quote:I wasn't thinking anything like that, just some regular powersets that contain a mixture of elemental attacks. Like a controller set that uses ice for the holds, electricity for the stuns, has an earthquake to knock people down etc..OOoh... with an Ammo swap type toggles for each element.
I think it might have to be it's own AT...
The sets would more flexible in terms of the effects and damage types it could apply but that could be balanced by lacking the focus that other sets have. In terms of a gimmick, maybe something like the fire attacks reduce resistance to the other elements, rerwarding mixing up the attack change. -
One thing I'd like (but that would be more proliferation than brand new sets) would be Elemental blast/assault/control/melee (and maybe (de)buff and armour sets too). Basically a set that has a selection of the powers from ice/fire/elec/earth/water with maybe a couple of new powers.
I think a probability manipulation (de)buff set could be cool. And I'd love a full leadership (de)buff power set. -
Why not PM Arbiter Hawk and ask him?

Wow, looking good :-) The belt looks great, and thanks for the Welder's Mask!

Quote:It's +22%, you have base 75% so that means 97%So from watching the vid... it was mentioned a few times that snipes will now need 97% to get the insta effect? Wasn't it 22% before? I don't have a problem with this mind you I just want to be sure I didnt misinterpret what was said or miss some sort of dialogue where they announced/explained the jump from 22% to 97%.
I'm guessing the change in terminology might be related to the fact that the in-game combat attribute shows your total to-hit but your bonus. Saying 97% matches up with the in-game number you'd see if you were monitoring it. -
I highly recommend 'The Greatest Batman Stories ever told' and the companion 'The Greatest Joker Stories ever told'. They give you a great potted history of Batman and the Joker from the start up to the 80s, with a selection of fun stories.
For Marvel Comics... I love the old 'Secret Wars' trade paperback. 12 issues of pretty much all the heroes and villains from the Marvel Universe fighting it out. -
Everyone would buy a 'Aquaman Face Codpiece' item!
