I may as well add mine. I added my voice to numerous stuff that everyone asked for (Stores on the map, dual pistols, powerset diversification/proliferation, punchovoke, Arachnos EAT). But two things I know I helped add:
One is trivial, but fun. BaBs was refusing to add a Main Gauche to both hands of dual blades, due to the name. I posted 'So call it Main Droite' and he PM'd me:
Quote:and the rest is incredibly trivial history. That mean right hand?
The other is more important to me. Back in 2007 (wow, thought it was later than that), I PM'd Hero1 about how I wished what we did made more difference to the NPCs and stories, so that they would know the history of our characters and respond accordingly. He very nicely replied thusly:
Quote:Hey Darkspeed. Thanks for the PM.
Yeah, you hit on a really solid idea there. Having a Contact know if you've done something special or that you are someone special really does connect the player more to the game. It gives the player a little reward for being who they are.
Now comes the 'but'. The problem we have, like so many other things in our game, is that the tech just isn't there for it and the time on the designer ("me" side isn't there either. As I'm writing this, I'm trying to think of how we would make that work in our current system and I'm not coming up with anything.
Granted, now that we're under one roof (NCsoft) that may change. I get the sense that NCsoft is really going to get behind this license and try and make it the best it can be. So, be patient and if you see a Contact out there some day named Darkspeed with context specific dialog, you can take full credit for it. -
Oh and the Giant Tapeworm that lived in the sewers

Quote:Very cool.IOs.
Just after the infamous enhancement "diminishing returns" revamp, I PMed Statesman with an idea. I said how cool it would be for enhancements to have alternate effects: slot three accuracies and have a slight boost to your endurance rate, or gain some recharge for slotting damage reduction SOs.
Much to my surprise, Statesman responded!
"That sounds pretty cool", he said.
"I'll look into it." -
We'd have never had Clown summoning due to Positron's Triskaidekaphobia.
-
-
Just curious, but what do people think they suggested that actually made it into the game?
-
I don't know much about the gaming industry, but if you think that client (i.e. gamer) recommendations on your Resumes would help in any way, then i hope i speak for us all when I say please feel free to take them from what we express.
Best of luck in all that you do, and thank you sooooooooo much. -
You rock Arby Fab, and introduced me to Long Island Ice Tea. Which I am still shocked to find contains no tea!

Not a fury myself but...
At Hero-con, I swear I saw a man, drinking coffee, sitting opposite someone in a full, realistic humanoid cow costume.
No idea if they were anything to do with CoH.
If you were either of those two... good on you for being you. -
Not much to add, but without CoH to give me an outlet and chance to socialise (I am cripplingly shy, to be honest, CoH is the first outlet I found where I could really be myself), I'd have never gotten my PhD in statistical modelling. I made friends, even got a minor failed romance out of it... Went to Hero-con, met some of the players, some of the Devs (War Witch and Aveatea were particularly nice) and even hugged Arbiter Fabulous (who throws awesome parties).

I don't recognise any of the names... but goodbye to to them all. Please post screenshots and bios when you can.
And goodbye to you, I remember your posts.
Always remember, we were Heroes once. -
I know you don't normally use copyright music, but surely The Stranglers would be the optimum soundtrack.
-
Getting the IP, story bible and maybe the game assets (3d models) might just be possible.
-
Surely this should have been added for the Hellions first?
-
I'm not entirely sure what this suggestion would add. Could you maybe give soem examples of what you envision these powers being?
Quote:So, I have to choose between making my power better or making look how I want it to look? How is that an improvement over the existing alternate animations, which do the same thing whilst keeping cosmetic changes seperate from gameplay? In addition to the tinker trees, another avenue of customization would be the Gadgeteer archetype-specific inventions. Like similar inventions associated with conventional archetypes, these would carry the "unique" trait and they would take up a standard enhancement slot.
These inventions would allow the Gadgeteer to add specialized procs to their powers and/or control the way the power is displayed when it is activated. The latter would be quite interesting but is not currently feasible (that I'm aware of) without some changes to the inventions systems that would likely preclude such a function. Ideally, though, that would be one of the abilities - in essence, to apply a battle aura to individual powers controlling how the activation animation of the power is played out.
Quote:I would very much like to see this sort of thing come to pass, however, and expand these systems from something available only to incarnates into something that anyone can build a character around. It's certainly a way to monetize the incarnate system beyond just subscriptions and package it into something that anyone would want to spend their Paragon Points on. -
Quote:I am shocked, and insulted. Everyone knows that when Holywood truly wants to denote evil and villainy, they cast a Brit! Also how is Lovecraft's xenophobic casting of of those of not northern European decent in his stories any different than say Hollywood's default racial/ethnic casting of bad guys in movies? It reminds me of a quote from Thank You for Smoking where only Russians, Arabs and villains are allowed to smoke in movies.
The mix has changed a bit over the years. Russian and other former USSR or Iron Curtain countries are now the "new" force behind organized crime. Hispanics are often portrayed as involved with drug cartels in large cities. Asians are making a surge recently just not from the big three, China, Japan, Korea (except North). It's all Malaysia, Thailand and other non-specific southeast Asian countries are also drug gangs or hired muscle. Of course we still have middle-eastern terrorists. I think the only "foreign" culture that doesn't get cast as villains by default in Hollywood are Indians (well maybe in Amazing Spider-Man there's one). -
Quote:Thats not 100% true. Strangely, there is that family from 'Case of Charles Dexter Ward' are (very briefly) mentioned to be acquaintences of the protangonist and are described in positive terms. There are no positive representations of people of color in Lovecraft's work.
On the other hand, in Polaris he describes the Eskimo as being a race of genocidal monsters.
Back to his writtings, this is one of my favourite parts of Call of Cthulhu (my favourite Lovecraft story)
Quote:That cult would never die till the stars came right again, and the secret priests would take great Cthulhu from His tomb to revive His subjects and resume His rule of earth. The time would be easy to know, for then mankind would have become as the Great Old Ones; free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and revelling in joy. Then the liberated Old Ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy themselves, and all the earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom. -
Dual Pistols/Trick Arrow sounded like a bad combo, but so far its actually pretty fun. The redraw is a tad annoying, but other than that its got lots of cool little tricks and fun animations.

Yeah, HPL was racist, xenophobic, anti-semitic, probably mysoganistic. He also disliked poor people, rich people, anyone who had a job when he couldn't get one himself, anyone who wanted hm to get any sort of a job... Also, he seems to have really, fundamentally disliked himself (and his work). Basically, he was a pretty messed up fellow.
All of that is key to his work, because as he said:
Quote:He feared things and people he didn't understand and, partly due to various circumstances of his life, there were a whole lot of things and people he didn't understand. The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown -
Quote:Strangely enough... HPLovecraft.comAm I the only nerd in the nerdverse who isn't well-versed in Lovecraft?
I know Cthulu from the Internet and Wikipedia...I just have a general distaste for 18th and 19th-century fiction of *any* kind, with the "takes eighteen pages to describe a door" method of storytelling.
EDIT: Yes, I realize now that The Call of Cthulu was originally published in 1928, and is therefore 20th-century, but it still "feels" the same to me. If anyone would like to donate the works for me to read, or point me to a site where I can read them for free (and if you say the library, I'll come through your monitor and punch you), I'd be eternally grateful.
That has free electronic copies of (pretty much) all his works.
I'd also recommend the HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast, which has some great free audio versions of some of the stories (on the left hand side of the page) (and 119 podcast episodes discussing all of his stories) -
Its been almost a year and they can't even get the store interface to indicate what you have already bought. Or to use promo codes.
Even if they said today 'Right, Ignore any security concerns and lets add gifting!', I wouldn't expect to see it anytime in the forseeable future due to the amount of UI work and changes to the store they would have to make. -
