Im stunned and maybe even abit disgusted that any scrapper of even the most gimped combo possibly ever imagined could consider themselves needing a new perk to keep thier place in the sun.
There is a reason why even though my favored AT is blaster I only have one of those at 50, while having 4 lvl 50 scrappers. A scrapper just works. They play the game of who is a better killer better then nearly any other AT from 1-50 and virtually all can fill any remaining gaps from power sets like lacking a self heal or enough end recov or DR at the 50+ game thanks to incarnate powers.
Scrappers also just work for SO MANY RP concepts. From martial artist to power armor to alien god scrapper is really the go to AT most of the time.
However due to some new power comboes avialable brutes are looking more appealing. My old dark/regen scrapper would technically operate alot better as a brute when max rage was up. But outside of a few optimal comboes I think scrappers are just fine.
I personally definatly think of all melee sets as filling the same role. Front liner. Thats it. Even when I run with my best bro who is a DPS dealing Ice/SS tank on my scrappers we are just two sides of the same coin. Id like to think scrappers and stalkers along with brutes and tanks can all learn to embrace each other as one large front line badd assskicking bunch. Some of my fastest TF times had only frontliners in the ranks. All scrappers, brutes, tanks, and stalkers make for a good ol time of massive who is the better killer.
Its the only time on TFs you will see folks pray for large map Kill Alls with many rooms just so everyone can spread out and start calling out clear as they empty rooms.
So from a man with a 50 Kat/SR, BS/Regen, MA/Shield,and Claw/WP scrapper I say scrappers are JUST FINE! Or in the words of the ol canuckle head himself " Suck it up, BUB!" -
Touch my old TFs with care lest you take away one of those things I enjoy most. Leave all old arcs alone. Add new ones, maybe tweek old ones at the most.
My favorite TF cycle which on rare occasions is also an all day thing but typically just how I break up my casual pug time.
Sister psyche, moonfire, hess, citadel, first respec tf. I call it the Mechanical Council plot. Its not hard to use a touch of imagination to pull together Burkholders interest in cybernetics and freakshows own obvious cult like obssession, on top of the fact there is content aplenty about sentient machines from citadel and lumi to MK in founders and ofcourse the story arc about council bots becoming self aware.
Sorry for that rant I was just trying to underline how rich and actually pretty logical those groups mesh together in that level range. Especially since in sister you encounter a few council.
There are plenty of places that do need touching up, but not every old TF is in dire need. COX is content RICH and is probably among its biggest strengths in this current age when so many new MMO over the last 3 years have come out so light on content one month is all it takes to see the game in depth.
COX has OPTIONS to level in such numbers that even if at any point in time a new player gets ancy and speed levels with some help, if they come to love the game in time they will get curious and go back to explore all there is.
As a Lore Based RPer who prefers a mentor like role, I often am teaching both new and old players about the in game history and oft inspiring them to go hit the Ozone and flashback to see some of the old arcs I draw upon for my characters or discussions. Or pull up pwiki and start earning thier history badges. The story of galaxy girl and dauntless usually does that -
Quote:And that scales down all the way to cats to. I could tell you a story about 3 sister cats who each had 5 kittens. the younger sisters didnt really care for playing mommy and weaned thiers pretty fast then moved on to find new territory.Male lions do very little work - it's the lady lions who run the show
Meanwhile the oldest sister, a pure black pantheress, started nursing the other 10 lonely young kits on top of her own 5. and managed to get them to adulthood only losing 1 kitten from each litter to various accidents like dogs or attacks from other cats.
of those 12 that reached adulthood only 4 are females. All the kittens are long grown now and still wander the nieghborhood frequently coming by to visit thier momma cat who rules from her yard like queen of the entire town. -
Quote:I and I know no few others in game have long chatted about Boomtown needing a major revamp on par with faultline and maybe combining it with a revamped synapse TF and developing the clockwork kings whole concept alot more. That's not to say we wouldn't like some more non-incarnate zone revamps. Boomtown, Perez, Crey's Folly and the Shard could all use some love. And the 30-40 and 40-50 ranges definitly could use some new content.
Maybe and get blue steel to atone then die for his sin that created the clockwork king. -
Ill concur. The New DA is probably the best revamp since faultline. Not to say AP isnt looking Shiny Shiny. Not that iTrials where the only way to Iup solo or casually. A wst here and there when it was a fun one, and shards converted to threads has been enough to let several of my casual for fun 50s enjoy the new system even if they are not all T4 in every slot yet.
However I will happily throw my two inf in on the quality of the story arcs and thier expansion of lore. Its allowed for a depth of character immersion on my most beloved blaster beyond most content since cov came out.
For Bentley Berkeley, one of the founding charter members of the midnighters, and an immortal wizard who has fought the path of the Dark since the days of Cimmorea, not to mention a long time arch nemesis to Requiem, this series of adventures has been amazing fun.
Getting the chance to let his hair down and run at +4x6( hey sue me the mobs are new types partly and I am just a blaster) is great fun solo and probably one of the purest tests of his potential in a long time since its brand new unexplored lvl 50+ content, with new mob types and occasional mini challenges to really test you on the spot like saving Berkeley's old students/friends Sigil and Kadabra ( saving them both solo first time through was immensley fun and satisfying) just locked me into the mindset of BB thoroughly.
Fighting Requiem and one of the variant marcus coles two to one was also a nice moment I will recall for some time. As was seeing Ice Mistral sacrifice herself for Scir. The IMTF is one of my favored red side TFs and BB leads them fairly frequently( yeah he is a Vij I love access to both sides) so she is probably my most favored red side icon.
All in all I definatly have to say at least for my magical characters this current content update is right on the money. -
Quote:I'll toss my two cents in here.
Incarnate content is gated way to long for people with limited play time. I still don't have but three 50's that have any incarnate progress. They have pretty much just the basics with shards since that is the time I had to step away from the game.
With the amount of playtime that I have currently available and judging by my current progress, it is going to be sometime around 2020 when I get even one of them to any decent place with respect to progress. I just don't have time.
If there needs to be a limiter with respect to what a person can bring to a trial or TF, Paragon Studios should put the barrier in the way and say; "Stop right there. You can't do this because you cannot make a significant contribution." However, this has not happened and likely won't happen. Steamrolling content is well and good. I love it. I enjoy it. It's not a lot of fun to start something and fail due to lack of DPS, buffage, etc. BTDT.
This is one of the issues that I foresaw when they showed the massive tree that is the incarnate path. It's cool. It's meaningful (to some extent). It gives tons of progression for 50's.
Unfortunately, it is also as slow as a snail to progress when you don't have time to play hard core. It would be nice to have an offline "build up" mode to move the bar a bit faster when you haven't been able to play as much with increased drop rates to match.
So, the new stuff has lured another $15 out of my pocket, but I can't join in to the new trials since I have nothing to "help" out with. *shrugs*
Perhaps it is disrespectful to join in with a "light weight", but then if no one is doing to older content how would I ever get my 50 to be incarnate in the first place?
Just to put this in perspective, I ground out several 30 minute solo sessions (around 4 hours total) this last weekend to get two shards. Two freaking shards. I need about another 30 to finish my top tier Alpha slot. On one toon.
I ran the new DA intro mission arc last week to get four threads to finish my second tier two judgement power. Again, it took me about three hours to get the four threads. Absolutely freaking nuts for a drop rate that needs so many to do anything useful with.
My progress on the Lore and Interface XP is just as dismal. I understand the gating and why it is done, but all Paragon is doing is annoying the **** out of the folks who don't have time to sit down and spend 6 or 8 hours at a stretch playing. I've been there. You know I have. I used to sit for 12 hour stretches doing task forces and trials, for both days every weekend and 4 to 6 hours every night after work. I can do it, but I just don't have time. Real life demands some attention. So, I am punished for that lack of time. To be honest, the whole system doesn't engender me to plunk down another $15 for next month. My stable of 50's just sit there looking forelone knowing that they won't ever make it to be incarnates since I can't even get one to the current level.
So the way it currently stands, I know I will still be in the same boat next year sitting out in my little corner of Northeast Talos wondering at all of the water around me but knowing I can't drink any of it.
Not to call you a liar, but I dont think your trying to optimize your limited play time if your struggling to even get +1
You can get your tier one alpha running 3 short TFs, that is if 12 shards really seem that rare. I usually use threads for tier 2 alpha since a single WST notice can be converted into 40 easy threads. You can get shard drops from any lvl mob when exemped so run some for fun mid lvl tfs to help lowbie friends, such are packed with kill alls that can be plowed through. you play an hour a day, knocking out optimal content like TFs, Story Arcs, Tips and the like and you will rake in shards while doing other fun things.
Sound impossible? Its not. I have a character who hasnt run a single incarnate trial, has his tier 3 alpha, only left with Destiny to unlock, and tier 2s in the unlocked slots. His entire concept just doesnt fit incarnate as it is implimented so I outside of technically Assissting a fellow hero with his initial unlock arc, he hasnt done anything but convert shards as he finds them to threads, and earn notices every week if the WST is one he is fun for, and hey someday if he does have to be batman aiding the JLA against ol crater face so be it, least he wont be walking in without a plan. -
Heck I stopped collecting things in game on MMO a long time ago and even I am somewhat interested in this toy. Its like yearning for the days of old faultline in year one when you didnt have vertical travel powers in your build. Had a friend with SS lost down there for 3 days once
Id not do 10 bil, maybe 1 and I mean maybe. -
Quote:I dont really disagree. However the idea of a 30$ SG name change token still seems more like to breed discontent with players towards the marketing dept then anything else.I don't think it would be that hard. If it isn't that hard for them to generic a supergroup name and then let you rename it after, I don't see what the big deal is to be honest. Unless it is hard for them to generic a name.
Even if they did put in the token at least the option is there for those that want it and they would still get more business. Plus it is on a bigger scale encompassing a group of people, and if the price were high it would restrict it to those that *really* want it from those that just want to play a practical joke. And there's negative feedback about everything so I don't think that would stop them from doing this, especially since it's been requested so many times.
Do keep in mind though when they do change an SG name due to violation they do only give a window of 3 days to submit your 3 alternate choices. -
Quote:that is your view. Mine is much different as I know a number of SG on Virtue alone I put any members I see on ignore rather then risk letting them even on other characters ever into my teams. SGs can and do impact how others react to you even in a game with global handles which isnt new. COXs baby brother has global handles and lets you rename an SG at will clearly because they made sure that was part of the base code. I dont see it as a failing in COX to force you to start a new sg if you want a new group affiliation. That doesn't really apply here. In other game's people/groups of people are defined by their guild tag. In this game people are defined by their global name (which can be changed). If you go around doing such things that would give you a negative reputation it's your global name that will be affected.
When I founded Crey Global Enterprises so many years ago I knew it was a name I would proudly associate most of my lore based characters with. From Count Alphonse Crey to Invisible Falcon many of my characters since that day came into being first and foremost because of my SG which is more connected with my virtual identity in this game then any singular character.
Its not that I dont get the desire to keep all that prestige and lose what are often silly names. However that is also kind of the long time running joke when it comes to those who sale SGs with huge amounts of prestige pre loaded. Most intentionally make them very silly/generic names as a way to almost punish thier future buyers. Infact it typically seems like if you actually are selling a good or even half way decently named SG with a 6 or more figure prestige bank you can make ALOT more then the typically
" Silly Power Bunny Squad" that is up for sale. -
I once contacted in game support asking if a purchase similar to a name change for an SG could be possible. The answer I got roughly was a SG name change was about 5 times more work then a character name change and would therefore need to cost 5 times more. A name change token isnt exactly cheap, and I could see them not wanting to risk negative feedback by offering services that would be limited to players with much higher amounts of disposable income.
Further I have seen in MMOs where they do give options to change guild names, it allows entire guilds to partake in exploits when they crop up, and then just do a group name change to help avoid any social stigma such actions typically gain. -
Oh why not Ill bite.
My only red sider is an old pre cov scrapper named T'Keron Valmaz. Now days my friends call him the original rogue.
As my fans here likely are aware he is drawn heavily from COX lore specifically Infernals origin and all things in the game connected to COXverse demonology. This allowed me to make both an indepth and cosmic class being, who was still bound by rules not of my own making to help restrain any desire to god mode, as is so often the case with pretty nearly every demon wannabe I meet who seems to have more in common with D&D tanari'.
Being the lord of demonkind allows for an arrogance in attitude worthy of a classic golden age mastermind. He often wears the proper moustache to go with such style. Ofcourse being one to rather loathe godmoding I embraced many ideas of human fragility. As its not some mere possession or hybrid by birth but a full blown magical mishap and cosmic accident that fused a human and demon into one new unholy being.
I chose katana/SR for his power sets to represent needing arcane weapons to replace shadow and flame. His incredible speed all he had left to depend upon for defense with his immortality and regeneration lost along with his legions of followers who in no time turned to chaos and civil war. He would eventually align with those elements in the circle of thorns who held true to the ancient pacts and sought redemption still for thier betrayel and full restoration of thier body and soul.
His goals are many for various motivations. He seeks to full restore his demonic power, something Ill consider accomplished only with all incarnate slots filled to max tier whenever that long away issue comes.
His human nature still yearns to both redeem himself and prove himself superior to Infernal. I fullfill this in game by running various bits of content that bring them in contact and do some random RP to spice it up for my group.
He courts Numina to annoy Infernal, I often afk by her and doa few random emotes and bits of banter in local to trip out anyone passing by.
He seeks to bring back the ancient days of humans seeking to make pacts with Demons and does his best to spread trust and faith between the to cultures. Showing them that pacts are always kept to the last letter, and requirements like blood, flesh, and souls have no malice behind them, but simply the fact they are all humans have that possess any real value.
He mocks and seeks to drive off any false demons which he suspects come from another earth akin to the rikti homeworld where humanity long ago in a fit of emo biatchery all started to act like what they thought cool demons would be like until thier entire world came to believe the delusional fantasy. Those that think a full demon would even hang out where mortals could encounter them is equally delusional.
Frankly I dont even think Id want to level a villain up red side even in the early days the story over there was even worse and railroading you then the blue side. Way to much Arachnos this and that to really allow for the freedom of origin that being a being of two worlds who began his career in paragon living in the shadows manipulating events gave me. -
Ill just challenge anyone to come to D and meet Dem read his bio and judge for yourself if its god mode by whatever standard you use. show up and read with your own two eyes.
-
Quote:If you dont use lore you dont love the game frankly you hate it and are trying to force it and everyone else playing it to break immersion. Its like meeting someone trying to RP an athiest. It just doesnt work in a world with statesman. not one bit. Such beings would probably if anything increase the strength of all faith based foundations and most would almost certainly seek to aquire such beings to join thier ranks and preach thier causes. All of this started because we called you on godmoding the game's lore. You response was to insult us, call our characters 'insignificant' and insist that Lore RP was 'superior' RP and that if you didn't do it, you didn't love the game.
You couldn't possibly have forgotten all that, right?
Godmoding REQUIRES a character implying he has control of other players or can easily defeat them just because. Since I never have even hinted at such a type of RP being my thing I find it odd to keep hearing that term thrown at me as I well know what it means and can assure you it requires certain things I never do.
The only reason I even use RP in the OP is so that it can be IGNORED by those who dislike RP to such an extent they may want to be able to just highlight the topic see RP stand out and not even read it. Since every RPer knows no other RPers RP matters to them unless they personally interact I am still baffled by the number of attacks. My arrogence certainly isnt a good reason since long before I started to post every one posting here has committed far more obnoxious posts in thier history.
And again Ill say it, ofcourse your characters are insignificant to strangers when they are completely made up bits of personal fiction. That is one of the BIG reasons for LORE RP, so a total stranger will recognize the name and go oh cool he is into so and so bit of lore, i am to ill go walk up and caht about some part of it I love to discuss.
That doesnt mean your character wont become recognized by my own character in time, but it means there is alot more time spent on just figuring out if there is even a reason for the characters to bother interacting.
For example I am not going to want to run with someone who tries to ignore the whole zeus and the greek gods really existed aspect to insist thier character is the great wizard who created the shadow shard and trapped the rularuu and banished the pantheon instead of Tielekku. Which I encounter at least one wizard type cahracter a day in D with almost that exact bio.
So who is worse a made up Im the guy who trapped the rul and bound the BP, or a guy choosing to portray a reckless immortal wizard who spends most of his time captured or hiding out in dusty libraries researching things who happens to be part of the game worlds lore in minor but fun ways? -
-
Quote:You seem to confuse Lore RP with my RP. All I ever offered in the Op was a short story using characters who actually exist within the game world, the fact I portray one on my server is 2ndary. That people choose to focus on it is thier choice. The fact they spew ignorance, which is what it is when they say I am pushing my own story on everyone rather then just sharing it as another possible way to view it.Given the recent volume of posts in which you've attempted to push your ideas, I beg to differ.
But mostly I just laugh. There are few topics on which the whole of the forums can be united. I salute you, sir, for adding another.
Ive since even seen another suggestion using virtually the same story I give, just with the bigger main stream names like Numina and Infernal being the ones involved. Thats fine to I never said it isnt an equally valid view anywhere. What I did say was lore RP was my rp choice, and encourage others to embrace it as it creates a much smoother running RP world.
Let me put it this way Id rather have each player on the server embracing the role of various lore based names and concepts, then the endless string of super man or kryptonian knock offs who people frequently try to RP quite seriously. id rather have someone being Montague rather then someone make another " I am the best wizard ever from the best wizard family ever" running around.
When you try and make a character fit a predefined bit of lore it helps keep some order. sure one person might get to be Hero One, while another is percy. Since I see people often choose to RP very young and inexperianced characters like him id love to see a skilled RPer who has affection for him take up the role, and see what kind of insights he has into developing him as time goes on.
But if you really want to keep telling yourself that this all started with me trying to tell others HOW THEY HAVE TO PLAY OR THAT WHAT I SAID WAS THE END ALL BE ALL, then you are very much mistaken. -
Quote:And nothing will come of it bud, hate to tell you. Now for a simple way for you to test it yourself instead of coming here and posting your ignorance. Find a name in lore like Oh i dont know Cadao Kestrel, he is one I always thought worthy of being turned into a character. What the hell does that matter? I don't care if you have a character named Clark Kent since 'YEAR ONE', the name is STILL generic bait. You cannot play trademarked/copyrighted characters. End of story.
This is where you show your ignorance. You cant play copyrighted material from sources not owned by NC SOFT. The only rule to using in game lore for names is not using DEV/ADMIN related names and being clear to express that your just another player not anyway connected with DEV/ADMIN representives. For example if I was on my hypothetical marcus cole and saying I was really Jack, that would likely get me into hot water for more then the character name.
This is FACT deal with it and the fact you didnt think to use names from it first as its clear to me that is the real source of your animosity at this point.
No, but I'm sure doing so is on the list.
Already did, champ.
Make that character yourself, then send a petition asking if there is anything wrong with your name, since its about yourself they are free to respond and right quick typicaly within 3 days by my experiance. Heck if your really wondering even do a work around to see if that flies like swapping the L with an upper case i. then you can know firsthand rather then harrass me mkay bud. -
Quote:You seem to not even grasp the discussion. this isnt about me trying to enforce my RP on anyone at all. Never was, never will be.I can't believe I kept skipping over these DV threads. I hope they don't disappear tomorrow, they are amazing.
DV, do you understand the concept of 'consent-based RP'? What you're seeing here is people not consenting to your RP. And you can't do a thing about it.
Its just about people taking offense to one paticular idea put forth, then making personal attacks. Thats it. People spewing ignorance and hate and admitting to it and thinking it appropriate.
As far as I am concerned Ive won the war by converting a single player who actually bothered to come meet my character in game and once working through the initial animosity he now has made his own character Statesman Beyond which I applaud. -
Actually a few other tips to.
Never imply you can take control of other players, be it the technopath with machine based, the psi with mental powers, or the thing with lust aura/phermones.
never imply nor suggest your character is more then human in life span unless you are using lore as your likely to end up with an origin that contradicts lore and thus any one using the lore to be part of the game world. If you want to be another ghost in croatoa cool, put some real thought into the how, why, when, and where of it in the bigger picture.
If you want to be a POWER then get deep into that lore and find a concept worthy of your goal and embrace it passionatly. If you show that your goal with the character is to just have fun being the character and not rule over others then no one really should care who or waht you want to call yourself. -
Its ok guys, I am here to use my unqiue brand of arrogence to answer this one.
You see this very topic, so long ago is what prompted my first lore character T'Keron valmaz. Yes I know I know you all hate me its ok.
You see one day I was playing one of my early D&D PC based characters when I came across this low lvl character who was being very vocal about being an end all be all god of death and chaos. Funny thing was way to many where willing to let them roll with it and i just had to put a foot down. They tried to argue it was thier power sets( a lowbie dark/dark defender) that entitled them to portray such a being, not thier level, nor actually ability mind you but thier POWER SETS. and infact refused to see any say sword wielders or the like as even possibly powerful. One among them a troller was quite supportive saying for example things like a swordsman cant call himself a wizard etc.
I started to ponder this very odd approach and how best to combat it now in its infancy as this was about month 3 of live. I started to then wonder about what kind of POWERs in the cosmic sense there were in coh. Ofcourse we have Tielekku and the banished pantheon, but they are just natural spirits who feed on the latent psychic energy of humans. Then there are beings like Zeus who might be more then that or not, its really not clear. The well to me is somekind of portal and i view beings like zeus to be a parasite no different then the kheldians. In fact I usually call him grand daddy kheldian.
Then there was the demons. Now we where getting somewhere good, it was clear demons had serious mojo, and a truly ancient origin, though one thankfully left vague. We also had the names of several of thier heavy hitters.
But how does one dare to embrace such a role and not be just as bad as that obnoxious little dark defender? Well obviously the first limit is your cosmic class being must be mortal. And I dont mean superman with his kryptonite, no it needs to be softer then that.
Another is lack of the resources a cosmic being should surely have, be they allies, bases, or collected artifacts, since obviously you still start at first level. Now there is an alternative here Ill bring up, lvl up to 50 even incarnate out, under a different name, then only once your done building, do a name change and fill out your bio.
So you need mortality and generally a good reason they cant access thier army nor armory so to speal.
Well as I browsed the articles on demons I came across infernal naturally. At first his mother seemed a good option, but she really would of been god mode.
However the entire story around T'Keron and Valmaz leaves alot of room for how to apply it. A man fused with a demon through cosmic forces beyond any magic. Yeah lots of possible ideas started swirling.
I went with a mix of the hybrid personality at the core, with each half fighting to take control for short periods of time. Effectively 3 characters in one. I applied human mortality and morality to a demon lord and viewed him as exiled or unable to plane shift any longer, cut off from the demonic realm. I used Katana/SR as his power sets and chose to see him as now dependant on speed and cunning rather then sheer power to survive while he worked to make a place for himself in the world he was bound to.
In time, as his power grew, as we gained more temps, a lvl 50 cap, the mastery/patron power pools, and now incarnates I can say valmaz has learned to master his new form and powers quite handedly, but it will not be until we have full incarnate power that he will be ready to once again return to his realm and take his rightful place once more as lord of Demons.
Love it or hate it, that is how I create a character who wants to be a part of the big cosmic picture, but not try to boss around others or act like I am thier god etc. -
Quote:You ask ina perfectly civil tone and I am happy to answer. Simply put I see it as god moding to make a character and call them immortal just because you want to be an immortal. One part to the story of Berks creation is that one day I encountered 3 very poorly concieved, written, and portrayed highlander esque immortals. totally different players, in different groups I ran or just happened to see around places like the talos WW.Hmm me, personally, I don't mind you creating a 'Statesman from another dimension'.
Admittedly I personally think there's enough of them but hey, there are enough alternate dimensions that it is quite feasible to do that. There is no problem with that claim although you will end up with the questions.
"Well why aren't you as powerful as our Statesman or any of his other dimension/time versions was/are?" Because the only other versions of Statesman ingame require a full team of 8 people to bring down or in the case of Tyrant a full 24 teamup of superheroes/supervillains of now godlike power. Note that Tyrant nolonger appears anywhere ingame, instead you fight an Olympian Guard (which is a watered down weaker clone of Tyrant according to lore).
"Why are you here? Surely if you exist that means you're needed more in your home dimension than here?"
While it isn't going to strike the same nerve that having a character claim they're the "Son of Lord Recluse and Red Widow" since...we know that to not be canocial fact. Heck why not have an original character who styles themself after Statesman to be "the hero he could not be."
That opens up lots of opportunity for expansion, will he go down a darker path trying to make sure justice is done or will he be an upstanding rolemodel to all these 'dark and gritty' heroes that playing by the book and doing the right thing CAN make a difference?
With regards using a character from CoH background lore, why not make your own immortal wizard instead of using him?
I mean hell it's not like immortal Wizards aren't uncommon in comic book lore or even, as mentioned, in CoH lore. Why take something that isn't your own and make it your own when you could simple make something that is your own?
You could still have had that conversation with Hero 2 (who is probably, like the example above, a hero who has styled themselves after Hero 1 rather than a canocial 'passed the torch' person) about the good old days of the Dawn patrol, you'd still be that immortal wizard but one of your own creation instead of an canoical NPC.
Wouldn't that be better?
As a big highlander fan I was initially curious to chat with fellow fans and discuss how they had adapted it to the coxverse, since obviously even in our game world having 10s of thousands of immortals running around head hunting would be abit nuts. Each of them more or less had gone with the I am the one and only immortal left attitude, effectly a connor at the end of 1 type view of thier power and ability. In other words a total god mode character concept. Only one was even 50 at the time. all had very ineffective and sloppy builds. One was a BS/Regen, i run a very well made one of those and even offered advice on how to make thier build both more effective and more in line with the ideas portrayed in the film since that seemed thier main focus. However it was clear in my dealings with each they where the kind who made an immortal to pretend to be the ONLY IMMORTAL.
It was this that got me thinking, well what immortals are there in cox. Not really alot I can tell you that. One however that popped up immediatly when I ran a search for Immortals in Paragon City on google was a link right to Pwiki and a nemesis story arc where we find the humble bentley berkeley has been captured and in need of abit of aid from some young heroes.
I decided then and there, and perhaps with no small amount of ego, that I could embrace a proper lore driven immortal and portray it without the oh I am the immortal one who is all knowing and powerful tude that it seemed my fellow fans of immortal based fiction seemed to lack restraint when being.
In otherwords the only way I would dare ever to call a character I played an immortal( an instant step on the path of godmode) unless he is one I take directly from lore, and one I felt is both obcure yet interesting enough to deserve at least one fan doing all he can to raise his standing in the view of the game world.
Of that I very least am suceeding in as more read these threads and hear the name of Bentley Berkeley. Its never been about me, its about him. -
This is just... wow... First off, just because someone doesn't RP on Virtue it doesn't mean they're not worth RPing with. I feel pretty qualified to say that considering I've been RPing on Virtue for about five years now and have run across some pretty good RPers on other servers as well as made a couple characters on Union specifically to see how the RP there differs from on Virtue and had fun doing it.
Also gotta say that how strongly someone adheres to the lore of this game is not really important and does not make someone a god moder. I have a character that never tries to do more than engage people in polite conversation about a variety of topics and is far more interested in hearing what others think than trying to share their opinions. I wouldn't call that god moding at all but, this particular toon's backstory includes an explanation of how the universe was made that rips apart a sizeable chunk of lore and rebuilds it from the ground up. No, this character isn't responsible for the universe being created either. I just went the macro route for my character's story and fit the game's lore into it rather than going the micro route and fitting the toon's story into the game's lore.
Good for you but that last part is one of the cornerstones to my view on god mode. Aspects of the games lore is kept intentionally vague we still dont know for example the true nature of demons just that they apparently pre date the gods and have power enough to let those who make pacts with them match even divinely taught magic. We know the shadow shard was created to containt the Rularuu, an entity not just intent on devouring mere worlds, but entire universes at a time. A predator of infinity if you will for in the games multi versal aspect there is no end to the number that exists for every action, every possible path is taken somewhere.
Even trying to give an explanation to the how or why is God Mode. Claiming the mantle of Valmaz I can admit was not without a level of arrogence, viewing him as having interest in Numina to annoy infernal might seem abit much, but trying to tell others how or why of the universe or even that you where there without a lore based character to at least sync up. That is a major example of god mode in my book. Might as well say you are the guy who created this specific timeline and imprisoned the rularuu while your at it, wouldnt be any more extreme. -
Quote:Pardon I should have said meaningless to random folk who dont know you yet. Its the one part of this threads OP that is right on, if someone doesnt know you, and your bio doesnt catch them quick they likely wont keep reading, sometimes, infact oft times for me it is the name and or costume of a character that first draws my interest and I suspect that is not untrue of many others. And that's great that you get tells like that from other people that enjoy that style. That does not make other characters meaningless simply because their players chose to create something new rather than make one that's their interpretation of what a signature character would be like if it was walking around and interracting with players more directly.
Not to knock your idea of fun but, I'd say the reverse is truer. Characters like Bentley and Cole don't need you to tell their stories. They've got a whole MMO about them.
The only way others are ever going to know about the stories of those so called meaningless characters is if their players tell them and sometimes, those stories are far better than anything you'll learn about by talking to NPCs about the missions they want to send you on.
As for the choice to embrace a character drawn from lore. For Bentley Berkeley in example. calling him a signature character actually makes me feel like I am doing my role well, because two or 3 years back when he was still a fresh character, do you know the typical response when i mentioned he was drawn from game lore?
"There is an immortal wizard in cox lore?" Who is Bentley Berkeley? Where is he at in game?
Those are the main 3, still encounter them fairly often, which makes someone calling him a signature character, a term specifically applying only to dev and admin run characters who very much are off limits as I have explained in a number of my recent posts in threads.
Even the name Marcus Cole was one I never have actually used in play just amde a toon and shelved him a long time back, it was mostly a lark at the time to see if the name was even an option. Back then it never seemed like there could be a day when Jack the Tyrant-State and his reign over us would come to an end.
When Statesman is finally removed, it wont be any desire to portray his character that prompts me to make an active character using the name, no it will be the goal of creating a new marcus from another earth hell bent on saving this one his alter self has so thoroughly failed to look after. It will be to revel in the immerssion as I build a toon who is soley focussed on defeating a single specific AV ( not like soloing tyrant was ever hard even in the old days) The name, the face might have been seen and known before, but this game deserves a better class of character and if I have to I will make them myself and set an example for all.
Thankfully I dont. Just last night I ran into Hero 2 at the club, nice young lady. she was chilling by ms. lib and we chatted a few minutes about that golden age of the dawn patrol when Sir Alistair Sutton formed the group in 1923. We discussed what ever happened to that old soldier.( I myself like to imagine like captain america he got frozen somewhere during WWII)
But most interestly of all was an encounter with someone who apparently after reading this thread felt deputized by mob rule to come cyber stalk and harrass me while I was RPing with **** in the D. At first I was just gonna ignore him, especially after the needless public insults calling me all sorts of lovely remarks like a pedophile i assume because at the moment I was RPing with a group that included a 13 year old robot making nerd girl.
That by the way is the kind of behavior that people embrace when mob mentality takes hold of an otherwise rational mind.
You see eventually we finished with the egocentric posturing and started to actually talk. He came to understand that I really wasnt some god moder despite all the slander here to the contrary.
All it took was my examining his own character and how it can just as easily in the eyes of another be seen as a god mode, or a cheap knock off of a tv/movie/comic character. That just having his own name which again imo wasnt anything unqiue nor even very catching to the eye didnt make it his character in itself.
Specifically it took em 2 seconds reading his bio to make the comparison that he could be seen as a cheap harry dresden knock off, not entirely fair, but funny enough he actually replied with that indeed dresden had been the primary inspiration.
I then went on to explain how it was especially obvious knock offs, which to me often are more obvious then apparently to others, are among the most annoying and least inspiring kinds of so called original characters to RP with. I myself on **** also embrace abit of dresden when I go all occult detective mood so I do understand the desire to want to portray such entertaining characters.
And that is pretty much my point, I at least choose a character role and step into it to the best of my ability based on my love of this game and a desire to enrichethe world by doing my own small part to expand it.
You call **** a signature character but he is ONLY seen in 2 virtually forgotton story arcs that are so well done and written they wont ever need any time wasted on a revamp and thus never see a new spot light shown down upon them. He is only lightly mentioned in Midnighter lore as one of the founders but he is not The Founder, and far from the biggest name in thier groups lore.
That is exactly what drew me to Bentley Berkeley to begin with, he is so unknown, so obscure that many people I meet in game rarely have a clue he is other then my own character until I explain where his character is drawn from. I rather love it when i get any tell even a confused arent you that npc in that one quest? I go hm have we met? sorry Im a time traveler and sometimes it gets abit wibbly wobbly. Yeah I toss in some doc who for ol **** to its great fun. i then explain to them all the same rules I have shared here time and again about what kinds of names from lore are OK and the need to be very clear with other players your just one of them and not something more. -
Quote:Spoken like the ignorant fool you clearly are. Ive had him since YEAR ONE. He has ecountered no few admin and GMs in that time at events including taking him to every official costume contest( never won but never claimed I was a costume design artist did I?) Feel free to log onto virtue and file a report about it. I am sure a few have tried in thier day.So let me get this straight.
This story has nothing to do with you, even though your character T'keron Valmaz (ripped unceremoniously from Infernal's backstory) is at the heart of the whole idea? Why don't you tell me why that's wrong.
You know, T'Keron Valmaz is technically generic bait since the names are taken DIRECTLY from the game.
I am also sure I mentioned how EVERYONE of my lore based characters I self reported the day I made them, and exchanged emails with admin over several days to make sure I was in full accord with the rules, and frequently recieved personal compliments from them over my use of lore.
the rest is more general as I am tired of multi posting. Ill try and catch all of you that I can.
Never anywhere have I ever EVER said what I wrote in the OP was to be seen as HOW IT HAD TO PLAY OUT! it like many other threads and posts atm was simply an offering on how using in game lore, including the new controversial ressurection ritual, a way to bring back marcus cole, THe Man, not the meta god.
I have said many times I know I am not the Only Bentley Berkeley others on other servers must of had some similar desire to take on the role. I would hate them no more then I hope adam west would hate on micheal keaton.
I never EVER use spell check, nor edit my posts, I have no insecurities and no need to play grammar cop to others posts nor my own. i figure I am as coherent as a person with english as a second language which is good enough to me. I frankly assume those who choose that route to attack someone has little real quality in thier nature to be honest.
On the subject of a controversial name like say Alphonse Crey or even my infamously mentioned Marcus Cole who I am not using yet, its just a name I have shelved for a long time, never even imagined the day would come that all the pieces would fall into place to make him potentially safe to use. But when they took him off the list of Dev characters he actually became fair game, still I wait out of respect for those who do love him to wait until all NPCs of states are removed from the game world.
However its funny you assume I MUST BE intent on using it to only portray OUR Primal Earth Marcus Cole. You know I myself have long thought marcus cole might be special aside from the whole well of furies. that maybe he is important on a multi versal scale, I long ago theorized he was something like The One and could tap into the shared power of his alternate selfs. The TF i rather loathe with Riechsman actually made me think I might be somewhat close to home with the way he is drawing upon his alterante self incarnates.
Did it ever even occur to anyone in thier haste to attack me so needlessly that perhaps I wanted to use the name to portray a completely different marcus cole? Maybe one from a completely unimagined earth, and with a new twist on his role in the cosmic scheme of things. Maybe a man who is nothing more then human until he taps into his alternate selfs. a perfect foil to a monster like tyrant, without being the meta gawd that was statesman. I cant imagine I am at all new or special in typically picking in game AVs and villain troups as personal foes for various characters. Is it so wrong to make a rival to Tyrant? I personally hated every variant of jacks ego and would happily play his Id bent on assassinating his ego and super ego.
Nor can I imagine many here really put all the blame for my vehemence on me considering the level of actual harrassment that has been going on here. and yes wheather some of you like to admit it or not you all chose to be uncivil first. My comment wowtard was said in an indirect fashion, if one chose to take it directed at them, that was thier choice. -
Perhaps Rik you could approach this by asking " How does a blaster avoid KB issues?"
One of my most beloved toons is a blaster who takes more of a beating then most tanks ever will and Ill be happy to share a few tricks to harden up your apparently glass canon.
First it sounded like you said a fire blaster and I wanted to laugh. Sorry but that is just to much heat and not enough substance.
you should be considering Debuffs and how they effect your potential survival. Sonic softens up your targets against dmg, making it both outright better dps then fire in any sustained battle but on a teams makes them do more to. Dark offers to hit debuffs making you effectively much harder to hit. Psi offers lots of lovely soft controls like psi tornado to keep hoardes bouncing up and down all day long.
2ndary wise I personally only recomend mental for drain psyche that power alone adds ALOT of lasting power to blasters. If you cant access IOs as a ftp or low tier preemee, then consider acrobatics as a way to help shore up against lower power KBs at least.
And no considering once you do learn the ropes you will like the rest zoom up so fast, saying its a long hard road to powers that offer mez pro in the scrapper/tank/brute lines is silly. till then its easy to get by on break frees. Thanks to merits its so easy to use even a mid lvl toon to twink a lowbie that there isnt even much of a good excuse for anyone talking about havinga 40+ and a stable of alts from lacking H/V merits enough to supply a few KB pro IOs. -
Id love to hear what doesnt for waht reason.
It doesnt work because no matter what you want, in the eyes of the game your a living breathing human being with a 5% chance your blood line carries ancient MU traces? That even if its not inherently magical its well documented its one of the things infernals value in the making of pacts?
That they clearly outline the steps, and which one to improvise on? That there is really only one logical choice in that step? That now that your on this thread you no longer can ever get the debuff again?
