Quote:Of course exploits hurt AE, I agree with that 100%, but it still did show how people would use the tool given the opportunity. When the exploits were removed you still see a higher demand for farming in AE than story telling arcs and it has been that way from the start.Never said it wasn't.
Exploits were definitely detrimental to the AE population and had nothing to do with "show[ing] where the larger demand was/is" - people will cheat en mass when the opportunity arises. That tells us nothing about what they didn't do to get what they took. The exploits disgusted a lot of players (both those who were and weren't interested in AE stories) who then turned away from the AE because:
-they had to put up with constant farm-team spam in broadcast
-the casual willingness of fellow players to resort to outright exploiting
-serious crowding issues in Atlas Park and the AE buildings (often equals lag)
-playing with these new 50s who had to be told how to get from Atlas Park to anywhere else
The low post count of this forum compared to the past is good evidence of this, as is the dwindling number of "usual suspects" who make those posts.
That is really no different from the rest of the game. Before AE all of the things you listed about spam and farms was just in PI instead of Atlas.
Of course at the beginning there was much more AE activity of all types, but the relative demand for players to play other players arcs has always been lower than many arc makers are willing to recognize and they in turn incorrectly place blame on farmers, farms or powerlevelers in general.
Getting a thousand or even several thousand people to play any players arc is still a relatively tiny number of the overall player population.
Quote:You're judging the past interest in AE based on the current situation, forgetting the history and ignoring the new-shiny effect of the devs moving their focus in the game elsewhere, as well as the need for "improved search function, [and] removal of broken arcs" (your words there). If the devs moved some focus back into the AE system in some major way, say just by repairing those and other problems, many people would follow.
The AE system does needs dev attention because it's under-performing, much like stalkers or PVP. If we have a system in place for something in CoH, it should be the best system in place that we can have, even if "not everyone" wants to play it.
I saidQuote:"Improved search function, removal of broken arcs, increased demand and or reason for players to play others arcs(most of which are true crap) over regular better rewarding content and better advertising of arcs would all help."
In the end, my contention is while there are things the devs can do to fix issues with AE and give it more attention( like updating the new powersets as asked by me and many others), the relative interest in running marysue's arc is going to remain relatively low.
I didn't make my story arc so that thousands of people would play it and rate it high and give me cyberspace notoriety etc....I made it because it was a story I wanted to make and play and if others liked it or even bothered to play it that was gravy no skin off my back either way.
I would say to others that are looking for as many plays as possible and internet notoriety etc... based on the current status of AE you might want to go the route of the Howard Zaine Trilogy: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=278339
Which to me is pretty much mandatory if you want any plays in the high numbers at all. With hundreds of thousands of player arcs and hundreds of dev arcs, getting people to play your arc is increasingly difficult and the factors making it so have nothing to do with farming or powerleveling aside from them being more attractive to more people than any player or dev story arc. -

awesome! -
IDK guys I really think you have taken the wrong perspective about this correction.
I also think if you feel so strongly and the argument you are making has merit then it should be no problem with advocating a change in the intent of HO's to reflect this non intended bug.
I think we all realize that is not something that would happen which of course draws into focus the fact that HO's should not provide the levels of enhancement desired by those who's builds took advantage of this mistake.
That pretty much looks like a closed case to me. -
Quote:ok.I've bolded the art I think is way wrong. My first arc was a silly trifle of a joke, based around rabbit puns and was published like 2 months after AE went live. Its number of plays quickly went up and up and up, and it's now sitting at about 130 or so.
Quote:Once the AE meow farm - monkey farm - et cetera farms started and then chased off a ton of people*, it's gotten maybe a dozen plays.
Quote:On the other hand my arc Against The Wickerwork Khan has actually won a player's choice catagory last year (see my avatar tag there) and iirc, it's still under a hundred plays.
Which for those that are just interested in making an arc that anyone can play if they decided to do so would be happy with. However, if the motive is to have hundreds of people play the arc or even thousands then the promotion of the arc and desire for players to play the arc with reduced rewards and other handicaps come into play.
Quote:Back in " the old days", people actually did want to play player-created stories. Some of that was no doubt just "the new shiny", but the urge did exist, once. These days start a thread asking people why they avoid the place and you'll get responses about it being too hard to sort through the chaff, the rewards being off balance with the rest of the game (including nothing incarnate), how the history cited above left a bad taste in their mouths, but very few about "I don't care what other players have written (except from those sorts who like to pop in and troll a thread).
Quote:So the devs could actually do something about all this, refocusing the new shiny effect on the AE in part for a bit and it would no doubt draw a few more people to look at and play some story content rather another farm. If they wanted to. But they seem to enjoy writing up more trials instead.
*Some of what chased off a ton of folks was the dev response of course.
IMHO if people are not advertising their arc like this guy: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=278339
and then some, they cannot expect too many plays if any.
People have way too many options for AE story arcs to be as popular as some would desire them to be and that is where the disconnect lies, residual feelings notwithstanding. -
Quote:IDK man I don't play my PB the way you lay it out, but if you do I can see where the issue lies. If your damage aura is killing better than your PB then there are many things going wrong and kb is probably the least of them.I can see energy blast being useful on a solo blaster who needs the mitigation from KB for survivability. On a decked out and practically unkillable Peacebringer the knockback does nothing but hamper progress. Scattering mobs decreases the amount of targets that can be hit with AOE powers- And, like I said, one of those AOE powers is melee range. That means you not only fail to hit the target cap in your AOE's after the alpha strike, but you also need to reposition yourself constantly every time you use your most powerful AOE attack. As a reference point, my Warshade's damage aura clears mobs faster than a Peacebringer.

The fact that you choose to look at the entire AT in such a narrow way makes me know that this is more of a style/preference issue than something being wrong. As stated above part of playing the PB is you can play it like a true blapper using hover(now with the solarfare change) and use the "toss effect" to your SERIOUS advantage. YMMV due to style preferences as I understand some people don't like to play toss it around while others use it to their advantage.

Quote:I actually had a similar reaction to the news, but it took a different angle. I saw it as the game continuing to model itself after known comic storylines.
Supes died. Bats died. Capn America died. Statesman dies. It's what was supposed to happen.
I'll still forever call him a wuss and quitter because of how they did it, but oh well.
IDK, having worked in entertainment for many decades it just kind of bugs me that new fresh approaches to these kind of things too often get overridden by the Hollywood copycat syndrome. I know that with the amount of creative people that work within Paragon Studios that "someone" had a "different" and perhaps better way of handling taking this game to the next level of comic book/game storytelling.
I'd better dollars to doughnuts they got overruled in lieu of the tried and true method of killing the #1 guy. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! -
Improved search function, removal of broken arcs, increased demand and or reason for players to play others arcs(most of which are true crap) over regular better rewarding content and better advertising of arcs would all help.
I think the reality of the demand for players to play any other players arc and the perception by some arc makers is way way off and has been from the beginning. The demand to play others arcs is very low even without including the most influential factors and they have nothing to do with anyone being able to make a BM map in AE. -
When all else fails fall back on the tried and true kill the #1 hero bit and act like you thought it all up yourself and its something new and shinny.

Quote:I have both but I cannot say I see any kb powers in any set as griefing the other powers in the set. It does require a more tactical setup than powers without it, but that is just a style deal and certainly does not fall into the griefing realm.Even this isn't the case in my opinion. I had the inf. to take full advantage and more of the Peacebringer changes, AND I didn't mind playing a human form build... But guess what? It was still clunky and awkward. I had two very important melee powers in Radiant Strike and Solar Flare. Not only did all of my other attacks grief these powers... they even griefed themselves with massive knockback. Not to mention griefing the rest of the team, but I stripped him down and retired him before I got to bringing him on non-casual/with friends teams.
There was that other thing too. The constant HP crash that comes with Perma Light Form is totally manageable and I laugh at anyone who complains about it, but the endurance crash is a serious issue. Light Form was clearly redesigned to be perma-able, so it stands to reason that conserve power being the only endurance recovery tool available to mitigate the -end crash should have its duration and cooldown matched to that of Light Form.
The bottom line for me is that the synergy and flow of a Warshade is simply not available to Peacebringers, no matter how badly I wanted it to be. I spent billions of infamy and hours in Mids working on my Peacebringer, because I wanted to like him so badly... But every time I played him all I could think was "My Warshade could deal with this situation more efficiently and comfortably." It just became an exercise in futility for me. -
I'm telling save your time and just go Fire/Time, you will be sooo happy.
-
Hmm..another misdirected shot at farms...brilliant.
-
The situation with Jack Emmert was unique onto him. I have not seen any devs "go off" on the player base in writing in the forums the way he did. Nah Jack was "special".
-
Just give in and make an awesomesauce Fire/Time and be done with it.
-
You can get the ATO's from the A-Merit vendor in Ouro.

I had no personal messages, just the ones made in general discussion that were er um...lets just say they were less than professional.

I did not know Salsakitten personally but I feel for the family in this difficult time. Godspeed.

Drawn and quartered, Burned at the stake or Impaled.

You can go with Polar Lights. Trust me you will totally forget about the storms.
-
I will just go ahead and say it...YES you would be crazy to skip temporal mending. Skip Temporal Selection as advised if you need to skip anything in the time set. I think there are going to be times where you miss time's juncture as well but that is another page.

Back burner if on the stove at all. Having said that, my PB has kind of become my new main. Its nothing like my I8 version that is for sure.
