  2. Hey everyone, thanks for the good feed back.

OK I will start with the attacks, I am looking for some clarity on the DPA vs DPS. I thought DPA was Damage Per Activation and DPS was Damage Per Second. Are the stats listed above actually DPS because there is a time component there? I am assuming the second number of recharge time? Or is is the activation time? Is the best way to calculate which power is the "best" be to determine how much damage the power puts out over time? I.e. look at the attack chain and see how much damage it can put out in a sustained mannner - e.g. over 60 seconds or over one complete attack chain sequence?

According to the above numbers I am better off taking Energy Punch vs Total Focus- seemingly damn odd since I have to wait for ever to get Total Focus - you would think it would actually be better... More a comment for the devs I think

I decided to go into Mids and see how the four attack powers: Energy Punch, Bone Crusher, Energy Transfer and Total Focus compared as slotted and reported by Mids. Here is what I found:

    Energy Punch: Rech+cast time = 2.02 seconds, Damage per activation = 170, DPS = 84.5
    Bone Crusher: Rech+cast = 3.89 sec., DPA = 280, DPS = 70.35
    Energy Transfer: Time = 8.86 sec., DPA = 778.5, DPS = 87.86
    Total Focus: Time = 9.49 sec., DPA = 607.8, DPS = 64.04

So the above comments are clearly born out by Mids and it would seem that taking Energy Punch and Energy Transfer is the best choice. I will also put the damage proc in Energy Punch as it does make a good bump in DPS.

I took a slot out of Focused Accuracy and moved it into Active Defense which made having the HO slotted in Battle Agility for Defense Debuff Resistance a waste so I now have an extra slot to play with. Should I put it in Health, Stamina or Hasten?

When I respec I will make sure I take Active Defense earlier in the build. In game I had but for some random reason it took it later in Mids.

    Finduilas:

I see what you are getting at with the epic choice but from past experience with it and my Fire/shield Scrapper it was a game changer in that build. She went from struggling to solo most AVs to soloing many with out insp at all. The regen and recovery offered by Physical Perfection should make this build pretty hard to kill. I will miss the Epic Immob from my last build though, it was nice being able to keep those pesky AVs from running away. Come to think of it Ghost Widow was easier to handle in the MoSTF while immobed... I could drop FA and PP to gain an attack and Grant Cover but with my DDR at 95% GC isn't really needed at all and if I were to weight PP vs any other available attack PP offers way more than any single attack could. Also since I could solo some AVs with my last build and this build will do more damage than the old one...
  3. Current build - don't laugh, he has been pretty good as is.

    |-------------------------------------------------------------------|
  4. Hey all. Looking for some constructive input here on some of the finer points of slotting a level 50 Shield Defense/Energy Melee Tank. His current build has been good being capable of tanking most things you can throw at him unless he gets hit by a bunch of def debuffs. He currently has soloed a few of the easier AVs and tanked MoITFs and MoSTFs. Thing is I think he could a a fair bit better and more fun to play at the same time. So below I will post a proposed rebuild and a set of questions which I hope will engender some good discussion on slotting that will help both myself and others. (For giggles I will post my current build who has managed to solo some AVs and do quite well on a budget.)

While rebuilding Invictus I made some design decisions which I would welcome comments on. If you see powers that are missing that you think are "must haves" then feel free to chime in on how you would go about making those changes. If you see slotting choices that simply don't reflect the best practices on a certain power then let us know what changes you would make.

    Details:
-He is currently built for survival and aggro management (i.e. get it and lots of it and survive it)
-I was willing to sacrifice some damage output to achieve the above. (Skipped Energy Punch and Bone Smasher)
-I was not willing to sacrifice the four big hitters (Shield Charge, Energy Transfer or Total Focus, Whirling Hands)
-I chose Energy Mastery as his Epic so I could take Physical Perfection
-I slotted to get his Melee, Ranged and AOE postional defenses over 50% to get some defuff protection.

    Questions:
-Are any of the powers "overslotted" in anyway in the context of this build or best practices when it comes to slotting that particular power?
-I chose to slot Absolute Amazement in Barrage for its Set Bonuses and forgo Barrage as a good attack power. Was this a good choice?
-In Battle Agility I 3 slotted LotG and added one HO for 3% more def debuff resistance. A slot better spent else where?
-Should I move a slot from Health which is three slotted to Stamina which is also three slotted? Do I need anymore end for this build?
-Taunt, I fully slotted it for aggro management (think helping the team here) and the IO Set bonuses. Good idea?
-Is there a demonstrably better way to slot Shield Charge than I have it now? ~90%Acc, ~96%Dam, ~98%Rech
-I slotted Active Defense with two slots of HOs, best practice? Over/under slotted?
-Energy Transfer or Total Focus, which gets the Hecatomb set once I save up enough for it?
-SHOULD I take Hasten or One with the Shield? I am really torn on this one - which increases his and the team's survivability more? I lean towards Hasten as I also think it makes him more fun to play. Thoughts?

  5. Fulmens: Love your sig.

I will play with a few of the builds suggested here, I will start with Katana/Dark. LOL "Casual".
  6. Thanks everyone who has been sharing builds and giving some great ideas. It has been a great help and very informative.
  7. LOL Somehow I don't think Umbral needs someone to come to his defense.

Umbral - saying something sucks is far different than saying what you can do to fix it. Saying "slotted rather poorly." does not qualify as constructive. Notice I didn't fail to omit any of the characters from the sentence, as in the question mark I put at the end of "impossible to kill?".

I would bite and engage in a discussion of your rather obvious character deficiencies but it wouldn't be much of a challenge...

Wait, maybe Umbral does need someone to come to his defense.
  8. Well that last post was heavy on criticism and short on constructive. Well thanks for tearing it apart Umbral. Maybe you could work on being constructive/positive. If I were to guess I would think I had offended you.
  9. Trying to dream up my next hero and I was thinking I would try and make a toon that was NOT a tank and damn near impossible to kill. If you could make any toon besides a tank that your thought was damn near impossible to kill what would it be? Feel free to post builds here as I am sure we all will be able to learn a few tricks we have not thought of before.

After a bit of thinking I made up a DM/Regen Scrapper. I slotted him to get as much melee defense as possible and made versions with and with out the PvP +3% def proc. Since I have never played or even tried making a regen and only one DM my build might be way off so feel free to nitpick even down to just one slot. I feel like this guy would be pretty damn hard to kill with DM's -to hit and Siphon Life and the massive regen and heals offered my Regen.

    Thoughts?

  10. If I can't solo AVs/GMs is there even any point to ranged def in this build?
  11. OK so I have scrappers, tanks, more scrappers, more tanks, a very offensive def, a couple of offensive controllers and I was looking for something a bit different that wasn't a gimped defender.

I spotted the Mind controller and since I know rads pretty well I decided to do a Mind/Rad. He is up to level 18 so far and moving pretty fast. It's almost risk free leveling and I have even taken on 3 +4 purples solo and won. This is w/o a IO sets. So I am feeling pretty good about this toon. I am under no illusions that he will be able to solo AVs but he is fun.

So I am interested in building him out. Since I solo often I am interested in getting a pretty good ranged def on him, but I realize this is from my perspective of soloing AVs so my question is...

Have I broken my mind/rad in my quest for ranged def. Will be be able to solo anything hard? I.E. AVs? Will he even be able to tank/hold AVs? If I wanted to play him as a level 50 for a while would he even be any fun anymore? I hear the run out of steam around level 41 and he really does lack offensive powers but should be able to lock down lots of baddies.

    Thoughts?

  12. Changed the resolution to the same as the desktop resolution and it fixed the top and bottom lost area but the sides are still narrowed by an inch on each side....
  13. In what way isn't it right? I have it set to the same resolution that I did when it was running Vista: 1024x600. I can try upping the resolution but the comp probably will turn into a stuttering nightmare...

Why the !#$@? won't it scale to fill the screen anymore?
  14. I found the 3D scaling setting and moved it up to the same setting as the Resolution is set to but it did not change the display size issue. I am still missing an inch around the outside.

Oh and something I did or a change in the network speed let me finally get on and play. So just the display size and how to turn off the scrolling on my touch pad.

  16. OK well maybe "all hell" didn't break loose but I can't play CoH.

I installed 7 Ultimate on my M Series Gateway laptop. (M-1625)

After the fresh install I then installed my software including CoH. Now a system that I could actually play ("Play" it wasn't great but "doable") CoH using Vista, is a complete mess.

First off the game loads to the Log-in screen and character selection screen but while the whole screen goes to game mode the game only displays in the middle of the screen - not out the the edges - leaving a 1 inch black unused boarder around the edges.

Second, when I go to load a character the game takes for ever to zone and ultimately logs back out.

Third the previously not very intrusive scroll bar zone on the touch pad has become touchy and the zone that activates the scroll is not 2 to 3 times as wide as before and constantly getting in the way of any touch pad usage.

    Help?
  17. Hmmm some great feed back. Thanks guys. I am going to do some side-by-side comparisons with mids and work out some changes. I didn't realize Red and Blue side didn't share the same market so my assumptions on price were from a Blue side perspective.

I guess I am going to need to get my marketeer on and earn some cash.

I might post a thread seeking to explore the differences between red and blue side cash generating methods. For now I have been selling my drops on the BM, did some level 50+ SO purchasing and sold them at the stores to get some initial cash on hand, did some bronze ticket rolls and crafted/sold the good ones, do some farming along the way and will do some flipping off the BM.

What are the good farms here Red side for a Elec/Shield?
  18. Hey Brutes,

My first brute is leveling her way towards 50 and I am busy starting earning/saving up cash for a basic IO Set build.

As I am new to the Red Side and never made a brute I am looking for some tips and advice - even some criticism on my build.

As I am as broke here on Red Side as I am in RL the build is not a massively expensive one. I would like to be able to farm decently enough (although I can't say I farm much) along with SFs and teaming. I don't suppose this build could solo AVs could it?

Also I am interested in the use of the Enzyme Exposures in the Battle Agility to gain some Def Debuff resistance. Is that a useful or effective use of two slots? Would they be better used somewhere else in the build?

  19. Hey Thanks for the point of view. Sorry it took me so long to respond. Your post does have me thinking and I do agree that from a certain point of view your take on the blaster is certainly valid.

That being said coming from another point of view, that of survivability, focusing on kill rate and dps takes away from my overall enjoyment of the toon. I like to stay in fights - even if I am at range - and NOT have to depend on my teammates to pull my singed backside out of the fire over and over. While killing 20 baddies in short order is CERTAINLY cool, it is also cool to be the only surviving member of your TF standing in the middle of the square of robots and taking down the computer while everyone types "Go Ignis!"

Point of view is all. Now my next project will probably be a no holds barred damage dealer...
  20. UPDATE:

My final build has solo'ed Paladin, Babbage, Adamaster, Kraken, a Rikti Pylon, Infernal, Chimera, and Black Swan so far. So I think she was a success.

A few thoughts. I probably could get along w/o Acrobatics in most cases but it was pretty important vs Black Swan for keeping toggles up and I usually run it in missions where I won't be watching end every second. Even when I drop it I need to use End Sink to replenish. Efence is a joke vs GMs and totally useless for the most part but very useful vs AVs. Even with the 43% ranged def I do find myself wanting the extra 2 percent from time to time.
  21. Ah - more than I expected but what I had hoped. So far I have only had time to read the first page but I want to thank those of you who have contributed to this thread. I also want to say thanks to those of you who have posted builds - I think it will be of help to many who are new to CoH or just now exploring IO Sets and Purples.

As I have time I will continue to read the thread and I can sense a new project coming on...

So I am thinking a build which can hit the soft cap on def w/o many IO sets that confer +def would be the type of toon which would best be able to benefit from purples. So are we talking Tanks here? Shield Scrappers?

What types of toons do you all think can make best use of purples sets and still remain very survivable vs AVs, GMs, fights way beyond the aggro cap etc...?
  22. So I have to admit here that I have not played with purple sets much. I have made a couple of fully slotted heroes that have had a purple set, or the random proc thrown in but could someone help me out and WHY I would use purple sets in my build? I am going to makes some guesses here...

    1) I want to have a team toon build and wont have to depend on def because I will either get it from my team mates, have team mates to heal me or I just plain will never solo.

    2) I want to do something really well i.e. regen or recovery or damage but dont really care if that AV face plants me in 2.2 seconds because of... see above.

    3) I really have lots and lots of money to spend and I will be slotting full PvP sets as well that I will have spent billions on just one full set.

In all seriousness, are there any types of toons who, using purples extensively, are survivable and good for soloing AVs and being the last hero standing when the **** hits the fan and the team is getting wiped?

If you could share some of your builds and describe what the builds are designed for that might help.

    So... Really worth all that?
  23. OK played with the build a bit. Doesn't seem like there is much interest in this type of build from the lack of comments but I did hit the soft cap. I dropped Acrobatics and took the slots from Personal Force Shield and hit the soft cap on the dot. Hopefully someone finds this useful. (Edit) Moved more slots around, gained some KB protection and some extra recovery.

  24. hmmm well that works and I looked at it at one point but then I have to scrap the Miracle Proc. How much will that impact my ability to sustain a fight? Is it a big gimp? Or not an issue with conserve power?
  25. Rad/Sonic/Electric

Rad as mentioned above is a great set for any TF. I have finished an ITF with a team of four rads. Sonic is a monster when it comes to making things die fast. You can either build for a more mob oriented sonic or a most single target sonic. A well built sonic can reduce the damage resistance of AVs and other toons up to and sometimes over -100%. You can feel and see the difference you make when you reach your debuff maximums. My rad/sonic/elec is also solo AV killer. Want to solo Infernal with no insp? No problem.

Seriously you want a fun to play toon who can solo, team and max a huge difference on a TF? Rad/Sonic/Elec.
