In My Quest For Def Did I Break This Mind/Rad?
If I can't solo AVs/GMs is there even any point to ranged def in this build?
Well, I haven't tried it myself but I'll go out on a limb and say you won't be solo'ing any AV's. You definitely won't be holding them outside of PToD's downtime. You're very open to being smashed by a melee attack or a good AoE. On a controller with a single-target immobilize and soft-capped ranged and AoE, you may be able to handle an AV at range for a while. Mind doesn't have an immobilize unfortunately. Also, I think you're going to fall short of the damage needed to take down an AV.
I'd look to earth or illusion if you want to solo AV's. The pets are a good source of damage and a place to divert some of the incoming damage.
Build for recharge. What you have here is a potential juggernaut of control who by around level 40 should make it possible for teams to plow through even hard enemies, like +4 Malta, and then slam the end boss into the ground using your debuffs. It will work solo but IMO Mind Control really shows its strengths on a team, where the pet is much less important than having an extra AoE to throw at the enemies.
You truly have not rocked an enemy group until you've seen what a stealthy lvl 50 Mind Controller can do by running slightly ahead of the team and stacking Confusion on hard targets prior to the fight. To facilitate this without making the enemies kill each other before the team gets there, sleep the group, then start putting confusions on them. When the team arrives the alpha gets directed at the enemies themselves. It's just sick.
A few specific pointers:
- Terrify is a must-have at level 26. It has good damage and a lengthy fear to keep enemies off your back.
- I would swap Hover for Hasten, three slot it, then swap Fly for Super Speed. Put a Celerity +Stealth IO in either Sprint or Super Speed. You will now be invisible to most enemies. This is a huge advantage on a Mind Controller due to your three non-aggro mezzes; you will actually be a better snipe-troller than an Illusion Controllers are.
- Confuse is the best single target mezz in the game, tied only with Illusion's Decieve power. Take it no later than level 10, and six slot it as fast as possible.
- You may be able to get away with dropping your epic armor, because Mind Controllers on a team are among the least likely to get shot at. This is due to your ability to mezz without pulling aggro. Terrify will pull some aggro on you every now and then, but you should be able to handle it for the most part.
- I hate Conserve Power. You might feel differently, but I've never found a good use for it on a Mind Troller. I think with AM you will be just fine. Power Blast or Energy Torrent will be more useful to you, IMO.
- Since you're no longer chasing Defense, I highly recommend taking out Combat Jumping.
- I'm iffy about Choking Cloud. It's not an awful choice but I think you should play with it some to see if you benefit from it. I think it's a great power for a Fire or Ice troller, and less so for other Control sets--particularly Mind and Illusion which benefit from stealth and tend to rely on Confusion more than Holds.
This has been a slow to materialize project but should turn out pretty nice. I revised the build - any thoughts? I am guessing he runs about 36% Ranged Def in combat and spikes to over 40 every ~35 seconds for about 15 seconds.

LR's -regen being perma, you only need about 24 DPS to make progress, which is trivial even without Containment. Lacking an immobilize is an hinderance but not a showstopper, you can kite easily as needed as Mind's animations are quick, and your attack chain should involve Mesmerize, stopping the AV every few seconds (even if the sleep breaks immediately because of your next move, he still won't go back at full speed immediately).
The only problem I see is you slotted Mesmerize for sleep rather than damage. It's better than Power Blast in damage, recharge and endurance efficiency so I'd switch that around.
Edit : I posted that before your last reply. I see you fixed Mesmerize, however now Dominate is underslotted, which isn't a good move IMHO as this is your strongest damage power. Regardless, either build could take on AVs, it might be very, very slow but it's theorically possible.
Nice - thanks for the reply - I am looking at changes. Problem is I lose a lot of recharge if I don't use either the Purp set in Mes or the hold set in Dom.
New changes to Mass Hypnosis - moved the purp set there and added a slot to Dominate from Stealth.
More damage and didn't lose the recharge or the ranged def which actually goes up.

OK so I have scrappers, tanks, more scrappers, more tanks, a very offensive def, a couple of offensive controllers and I was looking for something a bit different that wasn't a gimped defender.
I spotted the Mind controller and since I know rads pretty well I decided to do a Mind/Rad. He is up to level 18 so far and moving pretty fast. It's almost risk free leveling and I have even taken on 3 +4 purples solo and won. This is w/o a IO sets. So I am feeling pretty good about this toon. I am under no illusions that he will be able to solo AVs but he is fun.
So I am interested in building him out. Since I solo often I am interested in getting a pretty good ranged def on him, but I realize this is from my perspective of soloing AVs so my question is...
Have I broken my mind/rad in my quest for ranged def. Will be be able to solo anything hard? I.E. AVs? Will he even be able to tank/hold AVs? If I wanted to play him as a level 50 for a while would he even be any fun anymore? I hear the run out of steam around level 41 and he really does lack offensive powers but should be able to lock down lots of baddies.
