    A new Corruptor

At this point, I doubt anyone's getting anything out of this conversation being continued. I'm sure that by now, Frozen_Rogue understands the various points everyone was trying to make, and that's what matters given this is a thread he made to ask about Corruptors... so I'm just going to drop it.

Yeah, but we're talking about Fire/Dark. /Thermal doesn't have half as many expensive toggles as Dark - it doesn't have any toggles, in fact. What works for one build will not necessarily work for another, you have to assess all the components - not just one - if you're trying to give useful advice. /Dark is an end-hog - having a low-damage, quick-firing attack may work out better than a cone that you might not have the endurance to use, necessarily.

FYI, I have a Fire/ Corruptor, I'm not basing anything off Hero Planner.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm not trying to give advice on /dark or /thermal i'm trying to give correct advice on fire/ because people have been giving misleading information based on hero planners.
I'm giving advice on fire/ and i'm sure someone has good advice for /dark or whatever this chap wants to play then its up to him to fit it all together or someone who has played that certain build whatever it maybe can give good advice.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think you've missed what both Syn and I were getting at... the point is that if you're playing Fire/Thermal, you may well be able to get away with using a lot of high-endurance attacks, but if you're playing Fire/Dark, you're most likely going to have more trouble doing so, because /Dark is a much more endurance-heavy set than /Thermal. Giving advice on Fire/ alone doesn't really add up when you're talking about something where you have to take both sets into account, which is what we were trying to do (as people who both play Fire/ Corruptors, and both play with /Dark toons as well).

    [/ QUOTE ]

oh god! .. your whole argument is about end useage with fire/dark when not once have i even mentioned that.
I made comments on the cone and range of firebreath which if you look ingame is listed as MEDIUM RANGE.. good god it says so on the power..as for the cone if you stand close to a mob you not going to get as many hits with it ..ITS A CONE .. stand back abit.
This is my argument .. NOT about end usage
    get a grip

    [/ QUOTE ]

No need to get nasty and tell me to "get a grip," this is a discussion about a build, not a flamewar. Read the last few posts again. We were talking about both the cone, and endurance usage of it, and whether that might make a low-endurance attack more useful:

    [ QUOTE ]
It's also worth noting that a Fire/Dark using Fire Ball and Fire Breath in a consistent attack chain is going to be a Corruptor gasping for endurance in a long fight. In end-heavy builds, I might be tempted to take Flares as an ST attack to take off the last chunk of HP... but to each their own.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    [ QUOTE ]
Never in my life would i swap flares for anything else in fire..flares is just to low damage.
Fireball and breath are perfectly fine with an end red in them and my fire/thermal has had a nice long life up to 39 and i say this so people know i have experiance of fire/thermal and don't just look on a hero planner !

So, in summation, Syn said using Fire Ball and Fire Breath might leave an endurance-heavy build gasping for endurance. You said on your Fire/Thermal that you didn't have a problem with endurance. Syn pointed out that we're discussing Fire/Dark, and that /Dark is generally more endurance-heavy than Thermal. That's what I was talking about in the last post - the fact that advice about the primary should take the secondary into account as well.

For the record, I went and had a look in-game, and cones are labled as Close, not Ranged, for whatever it's worth. I think it just means they have a smaller range than the normal single-target attacks, but no one was arguing that fact. However, from a very brief test, it looks like the range on Fire Breath is 40 feet - of course, if you want to hit a number of targets, you're going to end up closer to the ones in front. I'm not trying to argue with anything you've said with this, I'm just trying to put some information out there.

Thanks for the ideas so far.

Bit of help on the concept: Mrs. Badcrumble is/was Eddie Izzard's shadowy Scottish clarinet teacher, so Sonic is a must. As is mystery, a hint of threat, a hint of sexiness, and jam.

    Definitely the jam.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, the Sonic primary might actually make more sense in that case, as it has more obvious sound effects. There's a thread a little further down the forum about Sonic/Dark, which would be really nice, but you might suffer from a chronic lack of slots, given all the yummy, slot-eating powers the two sets have. Dark would fit the shadowy and mysterious bits though. Sonic/Dark would probably work decently in solo and teams, and would be good in both PvE and PvP I suspect. You could make it a more damage-based build, or more of a support build, depending on how you'd like to play it - the Sonic primary has a number of control powers (an AoE sleep, a disorient, and a cone knockback), as well as some nice blasts, giving you options on where to take it. The Dark secondary has a cone fear and a hold if you really like the control. The fear might work well for that "hint of threat."

Sadly, Corruptors are yet to get a Jam-based powerset.
  4. [ QUOTE ]
Pheeew...feel better lol. I just began a hero career, and it felt weird, because all my villains never had any problems like that on all the servers i played on.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That's probably down to the fact that there's not really any obvious central meeting point in CoV. Atlas is an obvious area for everyone to hang out, and the more people you have hanging out in an area not really playing, the more likely it is that they're start arguing, sadly.

If you see people using really bad or abusive language, and it bothers you, it's worth sending in a petition about it. Same for cases where someone is repeatedly and intentionally stealing your kills, or harassing you in any other way. As Bridger said recently on general discussion:

    [ QUOTE ]
Will we ban someone based on a single incident of kill-stealing? To be perfectly honest, it's unlikely (although it would depend on the situation, as all incidents are evaluated individually).

However, if a player continues to grief others after having been warned, they will have their account suspended. If they continue after the suspension, they will be banned.

This is why it's important to /petition every time this happens to you - especially if it's the same player who did it previously.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Unless we all take the time to petition people who are making Atlas Park nowhere near as nice as it used to be, it's not going to change.
  5. Dark/Sonic could be good if you wanted a team-based support build, with nice buffs, and the inherent debuffs (-acc) in Dark. Plus you could take Tenebrous Tenacles for a bit of control. I wouldn't go with Dark Blast if you want a really damaging set though, there have been a number of comments here about how the set really lacks some power.

If team-based and supporting isn't what your after, best place to start might be figuring out what sort of Corruptor you want (high damage? lots of buffs? debuffs? want to be able to heal? want some control?), post it, and then those of us who spend far too much time Corrupting will likely have any number of suggestions.

Hi, i just started a hero character on Union, and after an hour of playing, i'm still amazed of what i saw...
Basically, during a whole hour i saw many people fighting in broadcast channel without interuption, some guys were spamming my screen with SG invites, and half of the conversations were in spanish (I'm not even talkin about the kill steals, as it happens often in low level areas)... Please tell me this night wasn't representative of what happens usually on this server. I spent lots of times killing the 100 contaminated during outbreak, i don't wanna change server and do it again.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Did you see a lot of this in Atlas, by any chance?

Frankly, I've seen a good deal of behavior like that in Atlas on both English servers (on and off - there seem to be good days and bad days, and you may have seen a particularly bad day, from the sound of it), and if you were there, the answer isn't to change servers, it's to get out of Atlas ASAP, and have any new toons start in Galaxy City. It is a shame that you get people arguing over broadcast and so on, of course, but you can always add them to your ignore list (/ignore Name). The random SG invites and killstealing quickly taper off after a few levels, in my experience, and you can make your own SG fairly early on just to avoid the random invites if you want.

As for the Spanish speakers, they don't have their own server, so I figure it's fair enough. Pretty sure you'll find them on both English servers, too, as a result.

thats incorrect .. its quite long range and has quite a large cone.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Out of all the cones in the game, Fire Breath is one of the narrowest, and it's a melee cone. I might be slightly off on distances, but you still have to be up close and personal to use it, and its not very forgiving if you line it up wrongly.

That doesn't mean it's not a good attack, it's just not my personal preference. It's also worth noting that a Fire/Dark using Fire Ball and Fire Breath in a consistent attack chain is going to be a Corruptor gasping for endurance in a long fight. it has the same width cone as darks tenticles .. how do i know this because i play with a dark/dark corruptor and use the same cone he does and i hit the same target he does.
Please don't make out that firebreath can only be used at melee range because that would be untrue and misleading ..its medium range ..not short or melee.

Never in my life would i swap flares for anything else in fire..flares is just to low damage.

Keep in mind, the person who started this thread was discussing a PvP build. Cones, as I've said, aren't always great in PvP, because you generally don't get the chance to hit more than one person. So, even if you ignore entirely what the range of the cone is, it's still questionable as to whether it's the best attack to take. In fact, I dropped the cone attack on my Ice Corruptor in favour of the low-damage attack available from level one, and have found it's helped me in PvP, since I don't run out of endurance so quickly, and it has more range to hit people as they try to escape.

Don't get me wrong, cones are nice, and I've missed it in PvE, but I wanted a stronger PvP build. Still, I wouldn't tell anyone to outright drop an attack, and I don't think anyone's doing that here - we're just pointing out our observations so that people have more information with which to make a decision. And as it happens, I don't really trust the various hero build numbers myself, I posted them previously more out of interest than anything else, though a quick test shows they're nowhere near correct - a few days before this topic was posted though, I commented that I felt like I hit a lot less mobs with Fire Breath than its Ice or Rad counterparts, which I think is in part what Syn was basing his comments on. I could be right, I could be wrong, but it's just my impression from playing Fire and other Corruptor sets, much like your feelings on the Fire and Dark cones.

And Syn is correct in pointing out that playing a Fire/Dark is going to be different than playing a Fire/Thermal, Thermal having rather lower endurance usage than Dark, which has two toggles. And that's based on my own experience playing as Ice/Dark, Fire/Cold, and Rad/Thermal, not on any planning program.

Going by Joe Chott's CoV Planner (which is realise isn't always correct), the Corruptor Fire Breath is listed as having a range of 10, and is referred to in the description both there and in game as a "narrow cone." In comparison, Frost Breath from the Ice Blast set is listed with a range of 40, and Electron Haze from Radiation Blast is listed with a range of 20. (Neither are remarked upon as being narrow.) Having used all three, the Fire cone certainly feels harder to hit a lot of enemies with, but it's nice and powerful when it does. I suspect the range and cone may be smaller precisely because it does quite a bit more damage than other cones, and it'd probably be a bit overpowered if it were easy to hit lots of mobs with it.

At this point, I'm not sure whether it's good for PvP. I may well drop it on my Fire/Cold, because I don't think she'll want to be that close to her enemies. On a Fire/Dark it might be of more use, since with a slotted Darkest Night, a /Dark Corruptor can often get up close and personal without too much risk.
  10. Congrats! Glad to see you did hit 50 later in the night. Just going to head off and update the level 50 list now.

Fluffy is very useful in PvP. While aim/buildup will cut through one DN level debuff, two will still render you very hard to hit.

If you can keep your opponent in CotN range, even better.

    [/ QUOTE ]

As Syn said, that's all well and good if you're going to be staying close to enemies, but realistically, it doesn't often work that way for me. I generally find I'm out chasing people down, having mid-air battles, and I really doubt I could count on the Fluffy to be where I needed it and doing what I wanted at any given time. (Can Fluffies even fly? I know Phantasms can, but I can't remember ever seeing a flying Fluffy.) Plus, I tend to invis around the zones most of the time, and having a pet following me would cause aggro. That's what I meant about my PvP playstyle - while I realise a Fluffy might be great for some people PvP, it doesn't work for me, and I just wanted to throw that possibility out there.

I originally intended to take it myself, but after PvPing a good deal and reading up about the Fluffy, I realised it just wasn't as useful as a number of other things I could take, Ice and Dark both being such good sets. I might fit him in post-40, for PvE and just because I want a pet, but that depends on what the extra power pools for Corruptors are like.

As it is, with one (three-slotted) DN I can stand toe-to-toe with most Scrappers, and I can often drop Blasters before they can drop me, so I'm not too worried about having a spare one. Not enough to give up any of the other powers I want, anyway. If I were an Arena fighter I'm sure I'd rethink all this, but I can't stand the Arena.

    As far as the build...

If this is a PvP build, you might want to have two accs in each attack, given the change to PvP zones that upped everyone's def. I think snipes already have higher acc so one should be fine there, but I've never played a character with a snipe, so I could be wrong.

In my experience, the cone powers aren't up to much in PvP. Too much end use for too little benefit, since you rarely get to hit more than one person.

Take Fearsome Stare. You can fear a lot of players you wouldn't be able to hold. It's also fantastic in PvE, and handy at the hotspots if you like fighting in Siren's.

Why do you have both Shadow Fall and Stealth? According to the Shadow Fall description, you can't use other Stealth powers while you have it on, so you can't stack them. If you instead take Super Speed and Shadow Fall, you have invis against mobs. Handy in missions for stealthing or just taking a look around, and handy in PvP zones if you don't want the NPC mobs to cause you trouble. Hasten is always handy even if you don't slot it, so Hasten/Super Speed and then three-slotted Hover for vertical movement and taking out flyers works well, in my experience. It also means that unlike Hover/Fly, you have the speed to chase people down when they run. Especially since you've not slotted Fly at all, which means you won't even be able to chase other Flyers as is.

Personally, I've opted not to take my pet before 40, because I just don't see it'll fit with my playstyle in PvP. I've also read that unlike the Defender version, it's not perma, so unless you add some recharges you're going to have a good span of time where it's not there - it'd be handy is someone here who has the Fluffy could expand on that, because I have no idea how long it actually does last. That one's more a personal thing and is bound to depend on how you play, but I just wanted to throw it out there, since all too often, people just take the final-tier powers purely because everyone does, and not because it's actually going to help them or be fun.

That's all I can think of for now, since I really don't have much Fire experience yet (have a Fire/Cold at 14), and haven't tried out Howling Twilight. Oh, a recharge wouldn't go amiss in Twlight Grasp, if you can find a slot (good luck ).

Eh, I built my Fire/Kin for PvP from the ground up - some levels have been tricky as a result, but it's been fairly rapid progress since I stuck SOs in a few strategic slots...

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's also helped you that you've had a couple of brutes in the SG to SK you up on a regular basis for Speed Boost.

That said, I dragged my Ice/Dark through 32 levels of crappy build (including not having any enhancements before 22), so don't let the gimpiness stop you from levelling that Fire/Dark, Frozen. It'll really pay off, if Fire/Dark's anywhere near as fun as Ice/Dark.
  14. I can bring Eir, my level 50 Empath, along.
  15. Given I've already had them a week, I don't think they're going anywhere.
  16. I have three spare Ambrosia inspirations from the Eden trial, currently sitting in Eir's tray without any use. So, if you're planning on doing the trial at some point, and would like to save yourself some Ambrosia-farming, let me know. My global is @Cybercel.
  17. I deleted my Sonic/Sonic Defender as I needed the slot, and just wasn't playing her much. I do have a Sonic/Dev Blaster at 25 though, and find her a lot of fun to play.
  18. You may well find you want end reducers in Shadow Fall and Darkest Night. I have two in each, and still have endurance problems. I tried it with less, after reading two was really overkill, but it just didn't work for me. Of course, everyone's playstyle varies, so you might not have as many problems as I tend to, but it's worth keeping in mind.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
So true! About the end usage and the number of options. I tried putting a build together up to 40 and I just don't have the slots or number of powers I want! So far I'm at 18 with Haz-Mat and I've got the 3 single target blasts, a hold, tar patch and the lovely debuff. Any suggestions where to take this build? He was going to be geared towards PvP but having been confused by so may powers I want to play with I have no idea where to take him!

    [/ QUOTE ]

I really think the best thing is just to keep going, and know you're going to need to do the respec mission. Respeccing at 32 gave me the chance to try out most of the powers I wanted to, and gave me ample time to get a feel for PvP in Siren's (my favourite zone).

Personally, I've tried to go for a sort of all-rounder build that works pretty well in both PvP and PvE. I have two holds (Freeze Ray and Petrifying Gaze) so I can still stack them to hold bosses, but dropped Bitter Freeze Ray due to its longer activation time. I've found it doesn't hurt me in PvP, because I just didn't have the endurance to use the three holds (and attack and debuff) anyway. Besides that, I don't need to try and hold players with high hold res - I can drop Darkest Night on them instead. My holds are often used on irritating nearby NPCs, or to stop squishies from running. At this point, slotted DN and the single-target attacks are the bread-and-butter of my PvP, along with Shadow Fall which I'm slotting as I can afford to. I find I really notice the difference if I don't have it up, and try to fight someone who's doing energy damage. Fearsome Stare is invaluable in the Siren's Call hotspots, and gets heavy use in one-on-one PvP battles. Tar Patch is less useful in PvP (so I'm not slotting it as much as I'd like to), but it's still too good for me to think of dropping. So nice in PvE (especially just before hitting Blizzard), and it has slowed people enough for me to take them out before they could run in PvP a few times.

The nice thing I'm finding about Ice/Dark is that while it's frustrating not having all the powers I'd like, and not having enough slots for the powers I do have, I'm still really happy with the build I now have. It works beautifully, it's fun to play, and I feel useful and powerful both solo and in a team. It's just a matter of finding which things you're happiest giving up, and keeping in mind that you're only giving them up because the character will work better that way.

And now, I'm going to stop sounding like the crazed Ice/Dark junkie I am, and get some sleep.
  20. Cybercel

    AR/Traps build.

One thing jumps out at me - is the double slotted accuracy for PvP? If it is, consider this...

AR/Traps is never going to be a great PvP build, due to a number of things. AR does mainly Smashing and Lethal damage - the most highly resisted types - and from what I've heard, some of the attacks are a little slow to go thanks to the weapon drawing animation and things like Full Auto planting you on the spot for a bit. It also lacks Aim. Traps, likewise, really isn't an ideal PvP set, since there's not a massive change of people stumbling into your traps on a big map. If you are going to go with it though, TP Foe would be a great addition to your build, since you can TP people onto Trip Mines for quite high damage. I'd imagine you could put down other traps and TP onto them as well. Overall though, if you're looking for a strong PvP Corruptor, you might want to try different powersets.

If it's actually a PvE build, I'd still consider TP Foe in there, since the same trick works perfectly well there, too. I'm not sure the two accs would really be the best use of those slots in PvE, though. I guess it's one way to make up for the lack of Aim, though.

Consulting the resident AR expert (my boyfriend has a level 50 AR/Dev Blaster ), M30 Grenade isn't very high damage, and uses a lot of endurance. Good if you want knockback, not really good as an attack. Not sure it's worth the slots you have in it, as such. If you want damage output, pick up Slug instead. Oh, and I've heard very mixed things (mostly negative) about Time Bomb. I'll leave that for someone with more experience on the matter, though.

    Dear Corruptors,

    [ QUOTE ]
I've missed reading up on patch changes, but I believe it used to be 6/4 (hasten/am (recharge enhancments only)) or 5/5. Or as some people do, 6/3, and stick more endrdx in AM to make it account for more each time rather than have it perma.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Since IG and ED, having any more than 3 of any one kind of enhancement in a power is pretty much a waste. You can't make Hasten perma anymore, and I suspect you can't make AM perma as a result. Since the changes, three recharge/three endmod is probably the way to go.
  22. [ QUOTE ]
So on that basis I am going to think poorly of those who use AP. Yes it is a sweeping statement, and no I haven't seen/played with anyone who are shining examples of proper/correct useage of AP.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If I were to think badly of every power I've seen used poorly in this game, then I'd think all powers were downright awful.

There is a BIG difference between AP not being a useful power, and people tending to use AP badly. You're absolutely right, a lot of people misuse it, and I've spoken to a number of low-level Empaths to point out that they were actually causing the team problems by over-using it, dying, and then not being around to keep everyone else healed.

And yes, you're right that often enough, there's no need for AP. I went a good 30 levels or so before I respecced it in myself, and never felt I needed it! However, after I opted to take it, I realised just how handy having that extra heal was. It might not be saving people for certain debt most of the time, but it certainly gives some peace of mind, not needing to wait those excrutiating seconds for Heal Other to come back. Even on the best teams, mistakes are made, or things can become overwhelming. Or, down to team makeup, another heal might be really useful - if you're on a team made up pretty much entirely of blasters, scrappers, and maybe a tank, with just one Empath and no other Defender or Controller, that extra heal really can be handy. It can also be helpful when certain powersets run up against enemies that cause them particular problems - some tank builds against psychic enemies, for example... and I clearly remember the time I used AP to bring back an SR scrapper from next-to-no health after he took the alpha strike from a large group of enemies who caused def debuffs. Heal Other alone just wouldn't have cut it right then, since he was still taking heavy damage. Speaking as someone who didn't use AP for a long time, you just don't notice instances like that until after you have the power.
  23. Cybercel

    Sonic sets

I have a level 25 Sonic Blaster on the CoH side of things, and tried out a Sonic/Sonic Defender for a while but ended up deleting her in favour of some other things I wanted to try. Both were really quite fun to play, and while I don't know the numbers, my Blaster has always felt quite powerful - and I love the fact that the set has a number of interesting attacks that don't feature in other sets. The attacks do a combination of energy and smashing damage - smashing is quite highly resisted, but energy is less so.

A Sonic/Sonic - whether Defender or Corruptor - could certainly come up with a wonderful team-based support build thanks to both the Resonance set and the Blast set. If you wanted to go that way with things, rather than making a dedicated damage dealer, picking up things like Shockwave (knockdown), Siren's Song (sleep), and Screech (disorient if I remember correctly) could give you some level of crowd control. From Resonance, I've seen everything up to Clarity at work, and I think they all have their uses. If you were sticking with a more support-based role, I'd pick up the shields, I remember them as being quite effective when I was on an all-Sonic team for a while. Sonic Cage is useful in bad situations (you can take something out of the fight when it's not going well, and deal with it later), but skippable. Disruption Field is quite nice - put it on a Brute, or perhaps an MM pet that's right in the middle of things, and watch everyone do more damage. Clarity, I feel, is a must-have in CoV: in CoH, there were always loads of Empaths around with Clear Mind to get rid of status effects, but in CoV, there just don't seem to be as many people around with such powers. I seem to spend a lot more time mezzed. People will also love it in PvP, as it gives Perception. Past those powers, I suspect Sonic Repulsion is skippable but maybe useful in PvP, and Sonic Dispersion and Liquefy sound useful. I've always wanted to see Liquefy in action - still haven't!

Alternately, you could make a chracter that focuses more on damage - Sonic Siphon and Disruption Field will both help you, since they reduce the enemy's resistance. You could probably skip the powers that don't do little or no damage, and you might even find if you were to build that way, the shields could be irritating. Trying to keep an entire team shielded whilst also attacking full-on and using other buffs and debuffs can get hectic. As far as the lack of snipe, on my Sonic Blaster, I actually took the first attack and slotted it up with range. Sure, it doesn't have the damage output, but it means I can pull things from distance quickly.

Hasten; slot it with 3 recharge without a doubt. Hasten is good stuff, and when you take it you want it up as much as possible.

There are actually two reasons why I don't have slotted Hasten; as mentioned, I have a lot of other places those slots need to be. The other reason, which ties in with why I use Hasten as a situational power only is that Ice/Dark has some horrendous endurance problems. I've never played a character as endurance-heavy as this. Now, in part, I'm sure this is down to play style. If I didn't use Darkest Night and Shadow Fall much, then I probably wouldn't have quite so many problems... but it'd just be silly not to use those powers a lot. And as an Ice Corruptor, I really think it'd also be silly not to act as a primary damage-dealer (and don't forget the ever-useful holds), which all adds up to a lot of endurance being used. There's just a lot to do, as an Ice/Dark. Even with slotted Stamina, I had a rough time until I respecced and put in two end reductions in my toggles. In that same respec, I took the slots out of Hasten, because I just can't use it most of the time. With Hasten on, I quickly run my endurance into the ground without very careful management... and then it ends and takes more endurance when I'm not necessarily expecting it.

If I had the spare slots, I'd throw them in just so that I'd be more likely to have it up whenever I wanted it, but given how rarely I use it, and how slot-heavy Ice/Dark can be (especially since I have more of a PvP build), there's just no way. Hence, I'd not suggest slotted Hasten as high priority for an Ice/Dark. Most other characters, sure, but not this particular one.

If you're lucky enough to team with a /Kinetics Corruptor all the time though, ignore this, and get three-slotted Hasten on your Ice/Dark.
  25. Wouldn't want to take the places of people who could actually use the XP, but I've never done the Eden trial, and would love to. If there are spaces for a couple of level 50s, sign up Eir (Empath) and Synaesthetix (AR/Dev Blaster).
