Hi, i just started a hero character on Union, and after an hour of playing, i'm still amazed of what i saw...
Basically, during a whole hour i saw many people fighting in broadcast channel without interuption, some guys were spamming my screen with SG invites, and half of the conversations were in spanish (I'm not even talkin about the kill steals, as it happens often in low level areas)... Please tell me this night wasn't representative of what happens usually on this server. I spent lots of times killing the 100 contaminated during outbreak, i don't wanna change server and do it again.

Did you see a lot of this in Atlas, by any chance?
Frankly, I've seen a good deal of behavior like that in Atlas on both English servers (on and off - there seem to be good days and bad days, and you may have seen a particularly bad day, from the sound of it), and if you were there, the answer isn't to change servers, it's to get out of Atlas ASAP, and have any new toons start in Galaxy City. It is a shame that you get people arguing over broadcast and so on, of course, but you can always add them to your ignore list (/ignore Name). The random SG invites and killstealing quickly taper off after a few levels, in my experience, and you can make your own SG fairly early on just to avoid the random invites if you want.
As for the Spanish speakers, they don't have their own server, so I figure it's fair enough. Pretty sure you'll find them on both English servers, too, as a result.
I think both servers get a lot of [censored] in Atlas - Galaxy, whilst still bad, is typically a lot better. As people have said, once you're up to about lvl 5 or 6 and leave for Kings Row and/or the Hollows, it should be pretty clear sailing.
The persistant supergroup invites are pretty new, I only really started to see them with any regularity since CoV came about, and isn't actually as prolific as it seems to be in CoV. It would be nice to have an option to ignore all SG invites so that you can just set it to allow invites through after you've decided to join a SG that you've been speaking to someone about.
Thinking about it, it'd be rather nice if team invites only got through if you aren't set to "Not looking for team".
But yeah, I think every game has its quirks and its bad players, but all in all CoH seems to have a great community to it.

Pheeew...feel better lol. I just began a hero career, and it felt weird, because all my villains never had any problems like that on all the servers i played on.
For the group invite, I have my own defense, in search text I'll write : (I'm a Trick arrow / archer defender, I can't heal) lol.
It's not always like that, but last night was getting a little much as i was transferring some inf for a friend and got so annoyed with it all started ignoring everyone
In my experience it tends to happen mainly in Atlas Park, when I roll a new toon, I head south to the red zone and plow my way up the levels and just ignore the broadcast channel.
Once you get to lv 5 head to the Hollows and get up to lv 8, then you can pop into perez for a bit of quiet hunting.
Then I normally alternate between missions and hunting normally in hollows, kings row and perez.
Getting a bit annoyed with the increasing number of lv 50s who hang round atlas to show off their powers to the newbies. If they're just there to chat why don't they hang out in PI?
Yeah Halo, I know what you mean maybe the devs could have Atlas as an auto exemp zone down to lvl 14 and have the contact for the cape mission in Steel.
To the OP, don't let it get you down, I always go and find a nice quiet corner and hunt away

That's probably down to the fact that there's not really any obvious central meeting point in CoV. Atlas is an obvious area for everyone to hang out, and the more people you have hanging out in an area not really playing, the more likely it is that they're start arguing, sadly.
If you see people using really bad or abusive language, and it bothers you, it's worth sending in a petition about it. Same for cases where someone is repeatedly and intentionally stealing your kills, or harassing you in any other way. As Bridger said recently on general discussion:
[ QUOTE ]
Will we ban someone based on a single incident of kill-stealing? To be perfectly honest, it's unlikely (although it would depend on the situation, as all incidents are evaluated individually).
However, if a player continues to grief others after having been warned, they will have their account suspended. If they continue after the suspension, they will be banned.
This is why it's important to /petition every time this happens to you - especially if it's the same player who did it previously.
[/ QUOTE ]
Unless we all take the time to petition people who are making Atlas Park nowhere near as nice as it used to be, it's not going to change.
You can turn Broadcast off too, problem is that way you won't hear what time 'Hollyoaks' is on.

No, sorry, I -fully- disagree here. They play on an English server, on the Broadcast and other public channels, they should speak English. I am Dutch myself, and moved to the UK two years ago. I am heavily against those who move to another country, or play on a server that is not in their native tongue, and then start having endless conversations in their native tongue.
It's impolite, in fact, it is rude. So, there is no Spanish server. Boohoo, live with it and adjust. The Dutch have their own Global Cat channel, and to my knowledge, apart from an occasional comment in surprise when you find out someone else is Dutch, I have hardly seen any other Dutch person speak only in their native tongue on Broadcast.
So sorry, Cyber, but it's not fair enough.
Edit: Please note that this is what I know of my own experience. If it has happened, then it has been outside of my knowledge, but in the 1200 odd hours I have spent so far on this game, I have only seen this behaviour from the Spanish.
How do you explain chav's and AOLer's then? I can hardly call the terms and language they use on broadcast English...

*Runs off to create a Total Chav Cat Channel*
I don't explain them, to me, it's an unknown lingo as well, but I guess it can be perceived as being English.
My knowledge of leet is very limited, and I'd rather forget it exists.
I think more to the point is why is anyone, regardless of what language they speak having entire conversations on broadcast?
IMHO if you want to have a "conversation", either join team/supergroup or at least move close to each other and speak in local.
Amen to that.
Disclaimer: The above may be humerous, or at least may be an attempt at humour. Try reading it that way.
Posts are OOC unless noted to be IC, or in an IC thread.
Good point, but it happens, and we cannot stop them, the least they can do is to do so in a language everyone understands.
Amusingly enough, I made a character on Vigilance so I could go practice my French pre-holiday, only to find that half the people in Atlas over there were spamming broadcast in English.
I wasn't up for that for the reasons you gave, so I left!
It always disturbs me (not angers, mind you, just disturbs) that on my frequent trips to France 80% of the population speak to me in English. If they were in my country I'd speak to them in English, so why not discourse in the local tongue everywhere?
But I digress... sorry...
Just to clear up the 'official' position on a few things...
Conversations or 'spam' on Broadcast - innappropriate use of any zone- or server-wide chat channel is regarded as falling under the same rules as those for Global Chat (Section 4(k) of the User Agreement).
In other words, please don't do it.
If someone is doing it, feel free to politely ask them to stop. If they don't, or respond in a less than polite fashion, feel free to /petition a GM with details.
Bad/offensive language - this is completely prohibited by the User Agreement. Please /petition anyone who uses any language you find offensive. Please note that the language filter is not intended to allow bad language - it is intended to prevent people who break the rules from doing as much damage as they might otherwise.
Server language - both Union and Defiant are English language servers. This means that, in zone- or server-wide channels, such as Broadcast, English should be used. Players are free to use other languages in 'closed' channels such as Team, Supergroup or Tell, as long as the others using the channel don't mind. The occassional Broadcast in another language isn't a bid deal, but if someone is spamming or using a channel innappropriately, feel free to /petition them.
Finally, I just wanted to note a couple of things about /petitions regarding player behaviour or conduct.
Even if a GM is not available at the precise moment that a /petition is made, when they come to deal with the /petition they will be able to check the logs to see what happened and take appropriate action.
In the first case, most offenses will normally result in a warning for the player or players involved (each case is evaluated individually, so the action taken may vary). Repeated violations will result in more serious consequences, so please send further /petitions if you experience the same behaviour in future play sessions.
Thanks.
Whenever bounding through Atlas spam chat is a problem. I'm tempted to make a bind saying "Please keep conversations either to tells or to team chat, we don't all need to hear about you killing a hellion" for all toons I have below level 10... or do what I tend to do and play late so that those who spam (generally of a younger age group) are not online.
Broadcast is not in my chat box anymore.
Hollows can be bad for spams, which is why Perez and Kings Row are infinitely more preferable zones to go fight in IMO. The only spams you ever get in Perez are from level 40s shouting "help, I'm lost!"
