Sonic sets

I've just made myself a sonic/sonic alt and so far I'm really enjoying it. I noticed there aren't really any threads in here about the sonic sets so I was wandering what peoples thoughts on them were?

Looking at the powers there seems to be a nice amount of control in there, how do the the blasts compare to other sets damage wise? I also noticed you can't slot a lot of the blasts for secondary effects. And there's no snipe.

As for the sonic resonance set there's a couple of powers I think could be skipped. It seems like a very nice set for playing a support role on a team.

Any way, does any one have some experience with these sets? Care to share with us how you've found them to be so far?

I have a level 25 Sonic Blaster on the CoH side of things, and tried out a Sonic/Sonic Defender for a while but ended up deleting her in favour of some other things I wanted to try. Both were really quite fun to play, and while I don't know the numbers, my Blaster has always felt quite powerful - and I love the fact that the set has a number of interesting attacks that don't feature in other sets. The attacks do a combination of energy and smashing damage - smashing is quite highly resisted, but energy is less so.

A Sonic/Sonic - whether Defender or Corruptor - could certainly come up with a wonderful team-based support build thanks to both the Resonance set and the Blast set. If you wanted to go that way with things, rather than making a dedicated damage dealer, picking up things like Shockwave (knockdown), Siren's Song (sleep), and Screech (disorient if I remember correctly) could give you some level of crowd control. From Resonance, I've seen everything up to Clarity at work, and I think they all have their uses. If you were sticking with a more support-based role, I'd pick up the shields, I remember them as being quite effective when I was on an all-Sonic team for a while. Sonic Cage is useful in bad situations (you can take something out of the fight when it's not going well, and deal with it later), but skippable. Disruption Field is quite nice - put it on a Brute, or perhaps an MM pet that's right in the middle of things, and watch everyone do more damage. Clarity, I feel, is a must-have in CoV: in CoH, there were always loads of Empaths around with Clear Mind to get rid of status effects, but in CoV, there just don't seem to be as many people around with such powers. I seem to spend a lot more time mezzed. People will also love it in PvP, as it gives Perception. Past those powers, I suspect Sonic Repulsion is skippable but maybe useful in PvP, and Sonic Dispersion and Liquefy sound useful. I've always wanted to see Liquefy in action - still haven't!

Alternately, you could make a chracter that focuses more on damage - Sonic Siphon and Disruption Field will both help you, since they reduce the enemy's resistance. You could probably skip the powers that don't do little or no damage, and you might even find if you were to build that way, the shields could be irritating. Trying to keep an entire team shielded whilst also attacking full-on and using other buffs and debuffs can get hectic. As far as the lack of snipe, on my Sonic Blaster, I actually took the first attack and slotted it up with range. Sure, it doesn't have the damage output, but it means I can pull things from distance quickly.

Well, I've never really played as a sonic (L 10 in CoV beta ), but I've seen a few around, so here are my thoughts:

Primary - Nice signle target based set (* see end of post for some numbers). I can imagine the res debuff synergising very well with scourge for burning down tough enemies. Cone knockdown is nice *if* you take the time to learn how and (more importantly) when to use it, the sleep probably won't be great in groups, but I can see it being very useful for soloists and a disorient is always ncie to have

As to the secondary, well, sonics are one of my favourite to group with (pity they're so few). Siphon is an OK power - not worth it on minions but it makes a difference on bosses and especially AVs. The single target shields are your bread and butter when it comes to defnese. Reducing the damage people take is always nice. Cage...hmmm...single target DS? No thanks. I'll just kill it Disruption Field rules. AE res debuff around an ally is sweet. Just don't put it on stalkers as it will drop their hide when they get near mobs. Dispersion is wonderful too - PBAE toggle res buf, and, more importantly status protection that affects you (most corrs can't protect themselves). No idea about Repulsion, Clarity is useful for those peeps who run out of dispersion (pity it comes so later, or you could use it for annoying controllers in PvP - run around Sirens giving it to everyone ), and finally you have Liquidify, which is again something I've never seen, but it sounds like it's similar to the Earth controller power Earthquake. Which rocks

Ah hell....now I wanna make a sonic/sonic corr...

Rght, those numbers I promised - these are from hero builder so they might be wrong, but it should be resonably close:

Sonic:
Shriek: 2.78 BI/3s recharge
Scream: 4.44/6
Howl: 5.89/10
All with a 13% res debuff

Ice:
Bolt: 2.78/4
Blast: 4.55/8
Bitter Blast: 6.33/12

Energy:
Bolt: 2.78/4
Blast: 4.55/8
Burst: 5.22/10

Fire:
Flares: 1.95/2.18
Blast: 3.61/4 (including DoT)
Blaze: 7.13/10 (including DoT)

So, as you see, it's pretty comparable with the others.

My Sonic/Sonic is now lvl10. So far I've skipped Howl and shockwave from primary. Can any of you tell me wich powers are the must haves pls (from the primary set only)?

My thoughts on my sonic/elec defender:

Overall I enjoy the set, the downside is that he is completely impossible to solo with. If you want to concentrate on taking your secondaries for a corrupter, you will need a team as Sonic has few powers that you can use on yourself.

There are some awesome powers in there, disruption field being a personal favourite. Sonic siphon just gives me something to do other than my feeble blasting when the team is buffed up and fighting. I skipped sonic cage, as it's a sleep and my secondary has a hold (elec). The shields are awesome, however some people still say that the FX make them nauseous. Clarity is also useful.

Of course, these are my thoughts for the defender. I think you need to make the decision, whether you're going to be a damage dealing class or a support class. Sonic resonance is much for suited to the latter than the former.

Again, not really played a sonic, but going by the other sets, the only "must haves" are the 3 single target blasts and Aim (or whatever the sonic one's called...Amplify?). The others come down to what you like doing. Solo a lot? Take the cone sleep. The disorientate would probably be very useful for PvP and so on...

A little update on how I feel now...

I skipped Howl but will probably pick it up later. Shockwave is so much fun it puts a massive grin on my face every time I use it.

Having previously played a bubble defender I'm guessing Sonic Cage and Sonic Repulsion are gonna similar to Detention field and Repulsion bomb, except I think Sonic Repulsion is just one burst of knockback. Although I can see the uses for these two powers I definately think these are the two that can most easily be skipped.

Oh yeah and no heal. It seems like it would be a challenging solo set.

I'm tempted by every single blast though, it just seems that all together they'll give you a lot of flexibility.

The set is proving to be great fun though and I'm chuffed that I rolled a sonic/sonic.

P.S.
Thanks for the replies and thanks for posting up the numbers PhroX.

Is shockwave any good? According to the descritpion it seems that you'll just take all the aggro after using it lol :P

i played a sonic/thermal corrupter until lvl 13 (deleted and remade as sonic/cold) and did enjoy it. sonics are deffinately in short supply so its nice to be different.

i took most of the attack powers in the early lvls.

shriek - your basic blast attack
scream - not yet used
howl - cone attack so good for solo'in if u want to take out more than one enemy
shout - very high dmg attack compared to the others. very short range tho.
shockwave - knockback cone attack.

providing you learn when/how to use shockwave its not that bad. it can get u alot of agro tho so its not something u can spam around. when solo'in its really useful. u can use it to position enemies together and use you other cone attacks like howl and sirens.

my plan was (but didnt get high enough lvl) to position everyone into a corner using shockwave, use sirens to put them to sleep, then use shout to pick them off 1 by 1.

i havent had any experiance with sonic resonance, altho i have heard after /thermal & /kin it is one of the better sets suited for teaming.

I didn't realise Howl was a cone attack. I just assumed it was short range, heh. One thing I'll say is that I was a little disapointed in the range of shout, but I guess it can always be slotted with range.

yeah providing you position it correctly howl will effect multilple foes... just that then you get the same problems as with Shockwave, in large teams you are gonna get alot of agro, also not a good idea to use it after sirens.

You weren't the only one disappointed with the range on shout, altho compared to the other attacks the dmg is great, i plan on slotting a couple of ranges in mine

HI , I have been playing a Sonics/Sonic corrupter from the start of CoV being live and she is 28 now and still my main on the villians side. I picked this set as i knew nothing about it wanted to play something different and didnt wanna play the standard /thermal sets that i could see everybody going for.

Most the the powers i pick, i pick purely on gut reaction and on how my alt was coping at the time, i did a little research but came up with little that could help.

Anyway i find her very average either solo or teamed but the fun i do get from her is her ability to be flexible in teams and i love her the most when she is filling in for the "controller/dominater role" but thats just me.

Things that annoy me about her are the long animations, -acc at the low lvls which she is now coming out of, long recharge times, and heavy use of end again im hoping that as she goes up in lvl she will start to lose these traits a bit.

Powers that i love are all the blast powers including howl, i tend to find i dont get much aggro from it as i have quite a long attack chain and by the time i cast howl well it just finishes them all off but again it aint a power i use while i solo.I have also found her an excellent puller being able to pull bosses out of the middle of mobs without aggroing everything around it using the first power in her secondary set, cant remember its name sorry.

Power i hate has to be disruption field cool for Brutes but for me lol, it eats end like nothing i have ever come across causes travel supression on me whilst the reciever is in with the mobs and in one case caused the mob to turn its aggro on me, its gonna be the first power i will drop in a respec.

Overall my experience with playing her has been mixed but im still hoping she will begin to shine in the last half of her career or maybe even in PvP who knows.
