  1. Postscript for posterity:

Just dinged 50 with this build over the weekend. Obviously, I couldn't softcap my Ranged defense until I hit 50 as I had 2 purple sets plus the Glad +DEF in the build to get me there and those couldn't be slotted any earlier.

While I'm very happy with the build, this simply proves to me how good my Plant/Psi was from 40 till end game. This guy, by comparison, was just "good" from 42 until level 50. At 50 vs Dark Astoria and PI AV content (vs 53/54's), I'd say my Dark/Fire is _almost_ as competitive as my Plant/Psi but only "almost" and not equaling it at all. Seeds of Confusion as the opener from the Plant/Psi is just THAT good.

I've read on here before that its very, very hard to compare almost anything in the Dominator world to Plant/* and really have to agree. I don't think I'll be taking this guy onto iTrial content as I've already got my Plant/Psi fully T4'd out. Since that's easily the better of the two toons, I'll be pulling the IO's back out of this guy to re-use on other toons instead.

Actually, I'd say its the other way around. I've played a lot of tanks although since the intro of Brutes, only leveled a few more. I find it an archaic AT that really has little value any longer in the game.

I think its a matter of whether or not you are playing with other players that really know how to use their powers effectively. Teaming with a group of Fire blasters that are equally fully IO'd out and high recharge...which is the norm for good players anymore....and you'll see what I mean.

    Tanks

Until and unless the Tank AT's aggro capabilities are strong enough to counter the damage output of blasters and the squishies that need them (trollers, Corr's, Dom's...anyone with holds doesn't really need a Tanks protection), there is little reason to level a Tank. A brute or scrapper brings more to the team damage wise and damage trumps a non-effective Taunt and aggro-holding capabilities, which are meant to be the hallmark of the Tank AT. If they can't perform that role (not their fault....its a programming mechanic) then there is little reason to play a Tank other than just for the higher numbers. And having leveled dozens of brutes since that AT's introduction....survivability for a Brute is already fantastic. Needing "more" of that just begs the question of whether or not the user is familiar with IO's.

The job of a Tank is far more than just surviving...its supposed to be a meatshield to help the squishies survive. I peel aggro off of current Tanks (fully IO'd out Tanks no less) faster than anything.

    Ice/Time

I built an Ice/Time from the builds posted in this thread. I was amazed at how powerful the toon was without slotting any purples.
  6. Staff/Elec here. Very easy to soft cap Defense to M/S/L and very high resists to boot. A great heal plus end recovery and you are highly survivable and very self sufficient. Great combo, I really enjoyed it.
  7. Yes I'm VERY happy with this build. Just hit 44 and survivability is way, way up there now. I'm easily soloing +2/x6 now, and once I've got RoF and Fireball slotted up I expect to do even better. Thanks again for the advice.

Sorry, I worded my question poorly.

    A) Yes, the dog is bugged so it only defends and is currently not working as intended?

    -OR-

    B) No, its not bugged, it just defends and/or waits for very low perception range...but the pooch is otherwise working as intended?

Which of the above statements is correct?
  9. Is the dog still bugged? He doesn't seem very aggressive and usually waits until I've been attacked before attacking. I thought Synapse said a fix was coming in the next patch but not sure of timing of "next" patch and I haven't seen anything about it in recent patch notes history.
  10. Revised build, what do you think now?

    -PermaDom
-Almost PermaHasten (off by .9 secs + Activation time)
    -Softcapped Range DEF, E/NE 36%
    -176% global recharge (w/Hasten)
    -37% S/L Resistance
-End Recovery looks really good at +197%

(Note: ResDam and Recharge IO's in Fire Shield and Hasten are both +5 EB'd accordingly)

  11. TechnoPB, thank you!

Didn't realize I'd violated the rule of 5 on recharge bonuses so thank you. However, I note that I'm now just shy of perma-hasten. Still have PermaDom, however.

Do you happen to know what the recharge time on the build you posted would be for Hasten 2-slotted with +5 Enhancement Boosters applied to each recharge IO?

**Edit** NVM, I figured out the +/- thing in the MIDS enhancement picker screen. So 2 50+5 Recharge IO's in Hasten on the build you posted (after I add back in Stealth and another LOTG+RCHGE) has Hasten recharging in 120.9 secs/Duration 120 secs. I can live with a second off of perma-hasten I think. :-)

Thanks again, I'll post a revised build in a sec.
  12. I left the game for a long, long time but I still think my "good old days" were when I ran around with a Perma-MOG Regen build. Tanking Hami solo, without healer assistance, ranked up there pretty high as well. I used to feel so sorry for all the tankers gathered around the rim of the Hive basin who would just watch their primary job being performed by a lone regen scrapper.

    Sigh. Those were the days.
  13. I get what you both are saying and its appreciated advice. But frankly, I've played a Dom before and this Dark/Fire is a whole other animal. That's why I'm asking for build advice. I think I'm just spoiled by Plants/. Hard to compete against that primary.

Back to the build I posted, I'm thinking of taking 3slots from Fire Breath and 6 slotting Flares, Blast and Blaze instead. This gets me another 7.5% of Ranged Defense. I could then throw enhancement boosters at Hasten and likely be able to get away with two-slotting it. I'd put the extra slot back in Fire Breath. That weakens the attack but I've never been overly fond of it in the first place.

I'd definitely swap out the Kismet for another LOTG +Recharge to compensate.

Thoughts or did I luck out on my first try and make a decent build?
  14. Posting this here as well as the Dom forum.

I realize you get more feedback if you post a build first but, as I've stated, I'm not a MIDS jockey so please be gentle.

    My goals are/were:
-Pre-Incarnate PVE Ranged DEF softcap via a small purple inspiration
-PermaDom (I _THINK_ I'm there with this build....MIDS says recharge of 75sec, Duration of 90sec...did I make it?)
-PermaHasten (no idea how to calculate this but Mids says I'm recharge of 122sec vs Duration of 120 so looks like I'm a bit off)

I could swap in another LOTG +RCHGE into Vengeance to get Hasten recharge down to 119 secs, but I sort of like having the Kismet +ToHit in there as I hate missing. But that's a minor change if deemed necessary.

This is my current planned build. Its only at around 35% Ranged defense with Nerve T4 Alpha...little less without that. I used a couple of purple sets, but they are the cheap(er) ones. It appears that the Enh Converters have raised even the prices of the cheaper sets. I do have Veng in there so obviously if someone on the team keels over (yay blasters!) I blow past the Def softcap for Ranged, Energy and NE. That will be helpful on iTrials and situational in PVE content but that's not the plan to softcap my defenses. I could also go Agility T4 and basically swap out the +ENDMOD/+RCHGE from that for the +ACC/+HOLD from Nerve; but I don't think either of those makes/breaks the build.

I've got all my attacks 5-slotted, most of them carrying +RCHGE set bonuses. I really wanted to slot up Maneuvers or even work Weave into the build but couldn't as most of the Dark powers really need 6 slots to get the set bonuses I was striving to attain.

Any critique is welcomed. I'm hoping with all the -TOHIT I'm throwing out there, I can make up for the gap to the ranged softcap. I don't mind eating a purple to get there but I hate having to do that constantly.

  16. Sorry to bump an older thread, but do you realize this is the ONLY Dark/Fire Dom build posted not only in the entire Dominator section, but in the Build Help forum as well?

Does the set really perform that poorly? I've got a 42 Dark/Fire/Fire dom right now and struggling with it (only have SO's currently) and perhaps its just bad synergy? I thought pretty much everything did well with /Fire on a Dom?
  17. Well, here's my problem.

I'm currently leveling a Dark/Fire/Fire dom. I'm at level 42. This is the point I usually start a "plan" after getting a good feel for the powers overall.

I have a Plant/Psi dom and with him the Plants + SOC pretty much negate the need for high defense. I still have 30'ish ranged with him so it helps, but unless I miss the spawn, everything is held, aggro grabbed by Creepers, Confusion reigns supreme. I don't get hurt (often).

That's not been the case with my Dark/Fire/Fire. Even taking on even-conned minion spawns (like...say....street sweeping Nemesis spawns in PI), I'm getting my butt kicked. I'm only using SO's but I am opening with Fearsome Stare and throwing out all the other -TOHIT debuffs I can. -TOHIT gives me effective +Defense right? Doesn't matter and I'm still getting chewed up badly.

So I'm thinking I need more Ranged Defense to compensate. I've taken Aid Self as a means of trying to patch myself up between spawns but there has to be a better way. Granted, I'm still on SO's but still....this just feels pretty gimp. For grins, I started popping a couple of purple inspirations and then played my normal way and, of course, I'm walking away relatively unscathed even up against +2 spawns. So it seems to me that my Dark mitigation isn't mitigating all that much.

Reppu has probably conused their spreadsheets with an actual character that exists in game.
Since you figure was off by almost 20%, I'm starting to wonder if you really meant:

-You PRETTY MUCH solo +4/x8 Malta on MOST occasions, SELDOM with any fatalities and RARELY with any outside help.

-You ALMOST defeated two +1 AV's within 20 minutes of each other.

    Etc. etc.

See, the key to credibility is, you know, being credible. That means not fudging your numbers in the first place. Note that it wasn't us that made the original claims, it was you, posting them as fact and not approximations.

Surely you can understand why questionable comments made on your own part subjects your entire claim to further scrutiny?

Now personally, I believe MOST of your story, +/- 20% embellishment. I've never been a player to state that Blasters were underpowered. Some certainly need help, but not all of them. You've pretty much set a tone here that negates all the arguments thrown in favor of Blaster Buffing and for that, I'm sure your fellow blasters appreciate you holding up the AT as it was intended.
  19. I admit to being MIDS challenged. Is this a good set and can it be softcapped easily for Ranged defense?
  20. I've looked everywhere in the forums and have yet to find a single build posted for such a set. Does anyone have a starter build I can use?
  21. Having reviewed the build, I can somewhat believe your claims. I say somewhat as I still find it difficult to believe you can PL someone from 1-50 in 2 hours. Maybe with an XP booster in effect for the PL-ee, but that kind of leveling speed is almost impossible for even the well-skilled PL players out there and I don't think you are in that league. No doubt you can PL fast but 1-50 in 2 hours is a bit much to fathom for anyone.

And frankly, considering that you are dependent on Vengeance to cap your PVE defenses, I'm not sure I consider this a team-friendly build in the least.

I have a clone of Gunmage's DP/MM blaster build. That took an enormous investment in IO's to achieve. While it farms quite well on S/L farms, and it does pretty good on most PVE content as well, its nowhere near as effective at AV soloing as my Ill/Rad or several of my Dominator builds.

Like others have posted....I think your farming/PL claims are what are most in question. The rest can be chalked up to just Drain Psyche alone.

Would be great to know what issues are not valid. We could either explain them differently, or know to stop asking.

You and hundreds of others would like to know. I'll bet Gecko is kicking himself for useing the term "not valid".

I'll bet he's kicking himself for bothering to respond at all. Teach him, won't you? Next time, he'd be better served to just stay silent and surprise us with a bug fix, wouldn't you say? Or maybe use his personnel budget to fire a bug-tester and instead hire a marketing person to craft his replies so that they are more politically-acceptable to the forum regulars?

Amen to that! Which of our concerns are not "valid"... frankly I think that was a somewhat condescending term to use here.

Lighten up....it amazes me how sensitive some posters are to the semantics utilized by the devs. He gave a reply, said he was watching this thread and that's worth a LOT more to me than psycho-analyzing his intent behind the word "valid."

With the reduction in pets, you'll likely get at least one Fire controller to pick you up and mentor you some. It helps if you go blow a few thousand influence at Icon for a fire aura and some spikey hair.
