The "A Shadow of the Past" (Free Expansion Issue #2) Content is now available for download prior to being released on the live servers. So give yourself a head start!

The download will begin after you exit your play session rather than prior to entering the game, and is purely optional - you can cancel at anytime.

It's important to note that you won't be able to see or experience the "A Shadow of the Past" content until it has been officially released on the live servers, but receiving it ahead of time will allow you to play right away (once the content is available), instead of waiting for a large patch to download.

Remember - you can cancel the download at anytime. Your progress will be saved and you can resume downloading the content the next time you're done playing City of Heroes.

I am sorry my original post was so short. Let me clarify.

From the TOS 3. LICENSE TO USE:

The way it was explained to me is that anytime you open the client and modify any file in an unsanctioned way, you violate the TOS. Even if you are just photoshopping a pic or turning off a sound, it is a violation. We cannot and will not condone violating the TOS on our boards.

There are several reasons for this beyond the fact it breaks the TOS. Let's say an evil haxor makes a mod and hides a trojan in it which is installed when you mod the client and it was posted on our boards. What a nightmare that would be.

Also, as mentioned in the thread, this generates support calls. Saying you do not support this is much harder when it is all over your message boards.

Another snag - What if someone offers a mod that allows you to have a superman logo on your chest? Sure, it may only be on your box, but if we allow a link to that then we are kind of giving "consent" and could open a can of worms.

Now, my jurisdiction is the message boards and I will enforce our TOS on these boards. I am not aware of any plans to change the client in such a way as to make it impossible or harder to actually do these modifications.

Due to resource constraints we were unable to take the time needed to enforce these issues, but now that we have the resources we are enforcing them. Like I stated before: Part of my job is to enforce the TOS and the message board rules, not to go out on other boards and enforce the TOS there.

Again, I am sorry for the confusion. I hope this clears things up.

It’s time for a comic book re-issue update again!

By this time, all Issue #2 replacements should have been received--and now we’re ready to get those Issue #3 replacements out. If you are eligible for Issue #3, and have contacted Customer Support about not receiving a copy, you should have gotten a reply regarding your addition to the list. Those eligible for a replacement copy will be sent a confirmation email with information on when the comic book will be sent out.

Please keep in mind that the new deadline for notifying Customer Support about replacement copies for Issue #3 will be Friday, September 3rd. Any requests made after September 3rd will not be granted.

If you are eligible to receive the current month’s issue, have a valid address on your PlayNC account, and are still having problems receiving your comic book, please wait until after the 20th of each month before contacting Customer Support. This new period will allow enough time for all eligible customers to receive their issues.

Cryptic Studios Beefs Up City of Villains Storyline and RPG Elements with New Hires

Highly Anticipated Game Adds Top Talent: Dave “Zeb” Cook and Shane Hensley

NCsoft® Corporation, the world’s leading developer and publisher of online computer games and Cryptic Studios™ announced the addition of two new members to the City of Villains™ development team, a sequel to the critically acclaimed and best selling online game, City of Heroes™. Dave “Zeb” Cook has been named senior designer and Shane Hensley will serve as senior writer on the City of Villains team.

Cook has 25 years of experience designing games, including 15 years working with TSR Inc., a leading innovator of role-playing games. He has numerous novels and role-playing games to his credit, and is best known for designing Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition Dungeon Master’s Handbook and the pen-and-paper game Planescape. Cook is a 2003 inductee of the Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame.

Hensley, best known for creating the RPG game Deadlands, will join the City of Villains team after an exemplary career writing computer games, board games, game guides and novels. He founded Pinnacle Entertainment Group, a company specializing in role-playing games. Hensley has also provided his writing talents to companies such as TSR, West End Games, SSI, FASA and had his novels published by Harper Collins and White Wolf Studios.

“The addition of Dave and Shane to the City of Villains team is quite a coup,” said Michael Lewis, CEO of Cryptic Studios. “We want City of Villains to draw players into their roles, and so we brought in Dave, a pioneer in the role-playing game market. Shane will add substantial storylines and narratives for City of Villains. Together, they will help City of Villains maintain the high standard that fans of City of Heroes have come to expect.”

City of Villains is projected for release in 2005.
