    Crab questions?

Welcome to, as my SG calls it, the awkward 30s. You have most of your core abilities, some of your frilly abilities, and nowhere near enough sockets to make them efficient or effective yet. At level 35 you can get your small pets and at level 38 you can get your medium pets, both of which should give you a sizable damage boost when you need it, even if they'll both be far from perma for the time being.

There are several good Crab build threads from the past week or two that should still be on the first page of this forum (sorry, too lazy to copy the hyperlinks while on my iPad right now). You should be able to pull some good suggestions as to where to go with your Crab.

As for what you're looking for in a Crab, defense soft cap is pretty easy to get close to but can challenging to actually hit, depending mostly on enhancement set bonuses for that last bit. Attack chains aren't too much of a worry once you get toward level 50 and have plenty of sockets with which to work.

As for your other wants, for tanking, take a look at Trilby's thread. She has an excellent build posted. Perma-Serum (and perma anything for that matter) basically requires Hasten. Super Jump shouldn't be an issue, since you'll most likely have Combat Jumping for your defense cap. Arachnos team buffs are pretty cheap; it's the Leadership ones that start to tax your Endurance. Mostly depends on the rest of your build if you can fit them in. Melee is mostly a personal preference.

Post your build and we can give you some feedback.
  2. Archetype taunt powers (Tanker, Brute, Scrapper) don't require a to hit check against critters, only against players. Do the Presence taunts require a to hit check against critters? It isn't mentioned in the power description, and I was curious why you have your taunt socketed for accuracy.

    ATO changes

Please correct me if I am in error.

Simplifying the equation to get something more palatable, I come up with:

    (Enhanced Recharge + Activation Time)(Current PPM)/(48 - 0.132*Radius(319 - Arc))

So, for any given cone, increasing the Radius will increase the proc chance, whereas increasing the Arc will decrease the proc chance. For any given non-cone, increasing the Radius will decrease the proc chance.

The problem I see with this formula is it fails to take into account the maximum number of targets for a given ability.

Take, for example, Suppression and Bile Spray, both of which I have on my Crab. Suppression has a 60 degree Arc and a maximum of 10 targets. Bile Spray has a 30 degree Arc and a maximum of 16 targets. (Ignoring, for this example, activation, recharge, and range) because of Bile Spray's smaller Arc, it would have a higher proc chance for each of its 16 targets than Suppression would have for each of its 10 targets.

Again, please correct me if I am in error.
  4. Trilby - I have to admit, there is something rather attractive about a Venom Grenade with a 126 ft range. Time to make those snipers jealous.

Black Assassin - While Arctic Breath is superior to School of Sharks, it doesn't open up the second tier of Leviathan Mastery as School of Sharks does.

I've gone back and forth on how I want to slot Channelgun. My current build has it slotted as you suggest (5 Apocalypse with Achilles' Heel: Chance for Res Debuff). In my current ST attack chain, I use Venom Grenade on cooldown between alternating Channelguns and Longfangs. I'm curious how much of a difference the Res Debuff proc is making on top of the repeated Venom Grenades. Anyone know?

    Quote:
I would also suggest swapping venom grenade and supression's slots (everything but the ranged) and 5 slotting the ATO. Reason being, venom grenade is a good openner and it helps if they can actually run towards you, setting them up for supression.
You make a good point. I hadn't thought about the fear proc on Venom Grenade impeding the mobs' ability to group up for more AoEs. I originally kept the ATO off of Suppression for the range boost of Positron's Blast, but now that I have the universal range boost from my Cardiac Alpha, I supposed I could live with "only" a 60 or 70 foot cone.
  6. A week or two ago, I finally got my Wolf Spider up to level 50. In the last few levels, I realized that I was playing him far more like a Crab than a Wolf, so I finally took the plunge and respec'd him to Crab. I had a blast leveling him as a Wolf, but you folks were right -- I'm having far more fun playing him as a Crab than I did playing him as a Wolf, and, as seems to be a motif on this sub-forum, he's quickly becoming my main.

I've since respec'd him a few more times to play around with different Patron Pool pets and Omega Maneuver. I have concluded that, while the sixth pet is nice, any of the Patron Pool pets I might want to take just aren't worth the two other powers required to access them. While Omega Maneuver is fun, I just can't justify keeping it in my final build (Wolf Armor is taking it's place for the 5.4% Psi resist).

With this build, I'm going for excellent survivability (I often end up tanking for smaller groups), being the party's candy dispenser of absurd levels of leadership buffs, still maintaining heavy AoE damage with reliable ST damage, and as many "depressed frogs" (as my roommate calls them for the arachnophobe in our SG) running around as possible.

Need to give a quick thank you to Trilby, as I took a lot of suggestions from your tanking Ananasi Spider build.

  7. I'm curious why you picked the Wolf ranged attacks over the Bane ranged attacks. It seems like the 50/50 mix of the two would result in excessive redraw.
  8. Thanks for the feedback!

Two_Dollar_Bill - You are partially correct about Pummel. It is there to allow slotting of sets I wouldn't otherwise be able to access, but I also like it as an emergency stun. I don't use it often, but it's nice to have when it's needed. For some reason, I hadn't realized I could slot multiple proc enhancements onto a single power, which opens up several new options.

Armath - I think you have the right approach to the pets. Almost perma with increased survivability will offer better performance than a perma pet that dies before I can resummon it. I've been going back and forth on Build Up. While soloing, the redraw has little effect, since it happens before I pull the mobs, and the damage bonus is enough to drop minions and leave lieutenants low enough to drop with a ST attack. In groups, I find the redraw outweighs the damage bonuses in most situations. I'll probably hang on to Build Up while leveling (currently 38) and ditch it once I'm 50. As far as Influence budget, my main has all her purples and is almost done with her PvP enhancements, so by the time my AoS is level 50 she should be able to pour all of her Influence into him.

Are there a lot of auto-hit fear powers that don't require a defense check?
SR's defense helps quite a bit there, but, as Primantiss pointed out, not all of those attacks allow defense to be applied to them. Most of them do, but there are more of them in the new DA content than in earlier parts of the game.
  10. What does a SR/DM tanker do for terrorize protection? I run leadership for the terrorize resistance, but it sadly does not provide the terrorize protection like its AoS counterpart. I have yet to find any way to acquire terrorize protection through enhancements or enhancement set bonuses. Have I missed something? Am destined to just have a few inspiration slots dedicated to break frees for these mobs?
  11. The build link should be working now.
  12. Before I post the build, I should make one quick note: While I understand that there is a heavy bias on these boards toward Crab Spiders, I've tried both and have more fun playing a Wolf Spider.

That said, on to the build!

    Key Points of the Build:

    - Perma Hasten
    - Three perma pets (Call Reinforcements and Summon Striker)
    - 39.2% Defense down the board (except Psionic at 28.4%)
    - 2.34 net Endurance Recovery per second (not counting Procs)
    - Two Build Up Procs (one in a toggle, one in Single Shot)
    - 75 ft range on Heavy Burst (78.3 ft after Enhancement Boosters)

I don't have any particular attachment to the order of the build, and would appreciate suggestions as to how to reorder it to keep better performance while Exemplaring.

  13. I had a similar issue back when I was playing a Ranger on Aion (my basic rotation had about 13 abilities, and then there were the situational and buff abilities on top of those, plus targeting keys and consumables). I changed my gaming setup to the following:

    Keyboard: Wolf King Warrior

    Mouse: Razar Naga

My Aion Ranger came very close to needing more buttons than this setup allowed, but nothing since has even come close to taxing the number of buttons I have in my setup.

Unfortunately, as I was searching for links for my setup, I found out that not only is the Wolf King Warrior off the market, the company doesn't even exist anymore. There are still some out there in online shops, but they've jacked the price up several fold (original MSRP was $30 USD). I don't know offhand what other gaming keyboard options are on the market right now, but that may be a viable avenue in your search for more buttons.
