A couple of points from someone whos brain is melting from typing up IT Business strategy at work today....

1.) COX has had a niche in the very competitive MMORPG market for 5 years, the superhero niche. Its been succesful enough to keep a good steady player base with a regular income, it's not WOW income, but its probably still in the top 10% of MMORPGS for revenue
2.) CO and DCO are entering this niche. When competition comes a business has three options, fight, flee or merge. NCSoft have trebled the development staff of this game in the last 18months or so. That signals to me that they wish to fight to keep their market share in this niche, and perhaps even grow the player base
3.) NCSoft must do something right, the company is worth more money than you or I have in our wallets right now I don't see them asking for government bailouts during this global economic crisis. The last financials showed their numbers pretty stable
4.) The best business move NCSoft pulled in the last few years was buying the full rights to COX and taken it away from a development company that clearly had a conflict of interest indeveloping this game to its fullest. (Why spend time and money on an older platform you co own when you can spend more on a platform you fully own?)
5. You may have issues with the dev/Gms/whatever. But I know that at it's core, COX is a business. If you get a 18 month warning that your going to be in competition, you gear up for it. COX has several things in its favour going into this fight, an entrenched and relatively stable player base, 5 years of content and developments, a recognized and established brand and no cell shading!

Im also pretty sure Going Rogue will be out around 1st September 2009, perhaps a little laster but certainly in beta by then.

Why that date? Its the CO release date. NCSoft will be very smart business people if they unveil an expansion that has most of the stuff CO has been marketing as unique to them (PC for example)

OK, I have some mechanical questions about defence and - to hit debuffs

Lets start with this example, to see if i get defence right

I have 0% melee defence, 10% ranged defence, 0% Energy defence and 20% lethal defence.

If the person hitting me has a base of 75% chance to hit, therefore

A energy melee attack has a 75% hit chance
A energy ranged attack has a 65% hit chance
A lethal melee attack has a 55% hit chance
A lethal ranged attack has a 45% hit chance

Is this correct?

My second question is how does -to hit buff work on these figures.

Say I have a -20% to hit debuff on a target. Does that apply to their base to hit chance, or one modified by defence first.

Is it (tohit% - defence)/to hit debuff
or (tohit%/to hit debuff) - defence.

Cheers for any answers, i just seeking clarity (redoing my rad/rad build and it has the potential to get some good defence coupled with the -to hit debuffs)

From what i gather the issues hes having are thus

1.) learning the code of a new app
2.) PVP IO's being tricky to code in
3.) The city traveller vet power being annoying to code in.

Hes pretty sure he can catch up and have a version for I15 not not long after i15 goes out.

Lingering rad is available at 20, Id take stamina first to pay for the end those toggles use up

rad blast does really well later on, but its a better team set than solo set.

Wait for cosmic burst at 18, that power is awesome

Wow, I had never read that post regarding Web Grenade getting replaced in Weapons Mastery. As I have a Scrapper that SHOCK actually uses Weapons Mastery and SHOCK actually has Web Grenade, I would have been extremely pissed off to find that it had turned into a cottage grenade. Very pleased that Castle ultimately decided against it. Web Grenade's probably one of the most useful powers in that set.

he didnt decide against it, he was "forced" into introducing a 5th tier in several epic sets due to the massive backlash regarding some of them. I have weapon mastery on my MA/Regen and i was inflamed when i saw web grenade was being replaced (as per original intention) with FA (with a different name) if i wanted FA I would have chosen body mastery.

I scan the highly profitable margins, craft about 10 of the item and undercut the current niche user by 10-20%. Make good inf in a short time and then move on to the next niche.

Other than VEATs? VEATs are really powerful and a lot of people play them.

Honestly thats a great question, and I'll be glad to answer it.

I donated to help a civil war flag, get restored. Part of that donation bought me a shirt saying I helped to save it.
I cannot not wear it however because PCers have a tendency to call me a racist when in fact the flag has nothing to do with it.
I understand their point, but they fail to understand the rest of the story, and are willing to ignore key facts, just so they can feel better about themselves.
Not to mention the fact that I smoke cigars, have tattoos, and love guns.

As a military historian by training, and a Civilian working for the military by trade, I understand the importance of restoration and heritage, and I also understand how tetchy people get with stuff like that. Like people protesting at our ANZAC day this year (Thats our equivalent of Veterans day in the US).

For example, I was with someone who freaked out that the SAS drinking club has a framed swastika on it's walls. The fact is that members of that unit captured a high ranking German officer on a raid and kept his flag as a trophy.

One thing i deeply respect about the US is the emphasis you have on tradition, restoration, rememberence and history in general. It's a good trait to have.

Dont like the term reverse rascism though, its all just rascism to me

Yeah sorry, im just used to the people who object to words being banned filling a certain archetype, my apologies if i caused offense. Its just something that gets under my skin a bit. (mainly because i have friends who get daily doses of verbal abuse because of who they are and I see how it effects them)

I still stand by the "just because it doesn't offend you, doesn't mean it isn't offensive" thing.

I agree, and have always agreed that the banned word list is way to strict, words like "Hazzard, Facial etc" these words shouldn't be on there, but there are definately some that should.

Just a question, how have PC people stepped on you? Just curious as to why you feel that why about this.

I agree with you that too many words are on the list, but i still believe the list needs to exist, and the list needs to Err on the side of caution.

Your "letters starting with W" example is hyperbole and rhetoric, and you should know better than to put up a weak argument like that. Its about as strong as tissue paper outside after a thunderstorm.

I also understand the filter doesn't work, and that people can circumvent it.

Some of the words should not be on the list, Facial certainly doesn't need to be there. I agree with that and have stated it in other posts in this thread. many of the examples shouldn't be on there, but there are some words that should.

And while the people out there can get around any profanity filter by saying things like "Lets kill all the N8ggers", by banning those words NCSoft sends a statement that they are not ok to use in their game. And that's cool with me.

We shouldn't scrap the filter because people can get around it, or because YOU don't have a problem with those words. I agree the list needs to be updated and made less draconian however.

(Stalin in banned btw, which made my historical arc a right pain in the butt)

You could consider that not all "PC" stuff is bad, and sometimes your actions and words can hurt..... i'm sure Sesame Street and Elmo taught you that at least.

Remember, game is rated T for Teen after all, that probably why the filter is so harsh. And as a T for Teen game it is required to be a "safe space" as much as possible.

It can be annoying, especially some of these words that are banned. All I can say is, get more creative with your use of language. English is awesome for synonyms.
