Just pointing out that it's not necessarily just the content of the shows that people remember fondly, but also the context in which they watch it. If you don't mind my saying so, your story kind of supports that. The show spoke to you on a cultural/background level, but not to me; and now I think the show was a social focus for my college buddies (who had similar backgrounds as me) after I'd moved on to other things.

To flip things around, I loved (and still enjoy) "Green Acres" and "The Beverly Hillbillies," and all but one of my old college gang thought they were the dumbest things on TV. Which, of course, made me love the shows even more... Still, I think a revival of either would just be BAD with a capital "B." And capitals "A" and "D" because, hey, why not?
I hear ya man; I really only meant for the 1st paragraph to be a response to your post (sorry).

And yeah I agree, bringing back any of these shows is meh. The "creative minds" behind bringing all these shows, movies and songs back from 20 years ago arent very creative at all.

It was kind of surreal to go back to visit my college buddies on weekends to hear them talking about the show and quipping one-liners at every opportunity. When I finally actually saw the show, my reaction was "Wow, this is crap" - which didn't sit too well with my old crowd...
Thats the thing about being "college age", its sometimes hard to grasp how a friend you have things in common with may not like ALL of the same things, humor etc.
Im an old guy at this point and its a lot easier for me to see now and respect that different ppl love different things. I dont think some ever get it though.

When I was growing up, ILC was more of a cultural concept. I was an "urban" kid into hip hop, dance parties, Kid n Play synchronized dance steps and all of that craziness. So the show spoke to me on a certain level since there wasnt much of anything else on TV along the sketch comedy avenue with a minority oriented cast, characters, themes etc. The DJ and Fly Girls were just an added bonus since those were the kinds of things I saw when going to clubs in NJ/NYC...a DJ and his/her group of dancers getting a party hyped up before it started. ILC didnt depend on this, again it was a cultural plug.

When ILC did a skit called 'HEY MON!' for instance about a West Indies/Carribean family where everyone had 13 jobs...I thought it was hilarious. My stepmother and her people were from that part of the world and while yes it was a stereotype...all her brothers and sisters did have like 2-4 jobs to help put everyone through college when they first came to the US. I could go on with more of the skits, but I think you get the point...different strokes for different folks.

The show didnt have an exclusive targeted audience, but on TV, there was a niche this show filled by featuring material oriented more towards blacks, hispanics etc on an urban level. SNL was still good, but its easy for me to see why people enjoyed ILC as well.

If you thought it sucked, I can respect that, but you cant take away the reasons behind why people enjoyed the show or simply write it off as trivial sophmoric/fart joke type comedy.

Assuming that the show doesn't get castrated by the politically-correct busybody brigade, it should be worth checking out.

For example, it will be interesting to see if In Living Color will be willing to poke fun of Barack Obama directly--something that SNL and most comedic late night talk show hosts have been deathly afraid of doing.
I think the same thing that happened to ILC is what happened to the DC Show, both suffered from the brass getting overly involved in production etc. and the creators behind the show eventually left. Im not sure that Chappelle ever suffered a from a nervous breakdown though (I could be wrong)...

Also, SNL makes fun of the president, congress and politics on a regular basis. Its great stuff
  6. A great sketch comedy of from back in the day. SNL was ok, but I was a big fan of ILC.

    Memorable stars:
all 29 of the Wayan brothers and a sister I think
    Jim Carey
    David Alan Grier
    Tommy Davidson
Chris Rock (temp member I think)
    Jamie Foxx
    and a bunch of others...

Dont forget the Fly Girls...famous ones being:
    Carrie Ann Inaba (DWTS judge)
    Jennifer Lopez

If Jenner had told him that his wife was with child, he wouldn't want the confrontation of "Did you sleep with my wife?" with Shane.
    edit - whoa TLDR

I like a lot of what you say in your post, but......

One of the aspects that I enjoy in both the novel and show is that there are a diverse set of personalities and they are human enough to "enjoy". I even dug Merle's character because yeah zombies and all doesnt mean a person is going to stop being a jerk...actually a person would probably be more of an a$$hole due to stress. Human in the sense that people are so different from one another and even people that seem to be the best that a generation has to offer can have some minor/major character flaws, while others that you may initially find a waste of life sometimes have real merits and strengths. Examples - JF Kennedy, some say one of the greatest presidents ever with superb qualities, but 'allegedly' quite the womanizer. If true, the kind of guy you want to invite over for dinner, but not have around your attractive wife. More contemporary - Steve Jobs, world famous inventor/visionary. Authorized biographers claim that he had the ability to be a class A jerk (parked in handicap parking spots, screamed at waitresses etc the list goes on). While his products are hot, maybe not the person you would want to spend any significant time with socially. Thats what I mean by being truly human.

Id need more convincing about the cowardly act equals going back to Atlanta versus staying with his family concept. I understand that family comes first, especially when the zompacolypse happens, but to me, it would have been easier to stay behind during the return to Atlanta operation. In real life, selfless/heroic acts are rare to come by since self preservation is such a strong behavioral drive. Ask anyone who works in what I like to call the "Civilization Officer" fields (cops, firemen, emergency medical personnel, military etc). I find myself doing the "right thing" more times than not, but not because I think about, just because certain lines of work tend to push you in that direction and after awhile it can become second nature...Rick is law enforcement.

None of this means you are any better with dealing with relationships or handling disappointing news from relationships. Coming back from Iraq, I had a handful of soldiers that felt/knew their pregnant wives had cheated on them...some confronted their spouses while others spoke to a Chaplain and let it go. Most of these guys went on daily foot patrols/engaging in firefights, stood guard outside the wire at traffic control points for days at a time inspecting vehicles (waiting to get ambushed or blown up) etc basically seeing the worst of it all.

Just b/c I think its smarter to confront a friend/coworker about his involvement with my wife doesnt mean the next guy would and I dont think I can necessarily attribute that to cowardice. Or maybe youre right and Rick is a big fat coward...the great thing about different perspectives.
  10. Stone and Hyper...really great insight. I wish I had these Mids tuturials when I started a few years ago, but I even learned a couple of new things at this point.

    Thanks a lot.

I hate to say it, but I'm warming up to Shane... putting his life on the line for a chance to save Carl says a lot.
Agreed, I was in Father Xmas' camp by thinking the kid would definitely be safe at the farm, but nada.

Always liked Shane even though he was slipping Rick's wife the salami. Just adds that real feel to the characters, b/c this really happens all the time between men that know each other (women too). Seems weird how you can really respect someone on one hand and on the other, get involved with his wife...real life.

I dont know how realistic the medical stuff was, but here are the 2 things that I had to "suppress myself" on in this episode:

    1) walking in the woods, the blonde is with the group one second and literally moments later is being chased by a walker but it takes the group like 5mins to get to her. Maybe it was a play on time, perhaps seemed to her like it took forever even though it was only seconds...idk.

    2) T-Dogg's, "lets just leave man, you and me take the RV and run b/c Im black and everyone here is a redneck" chat. At 1st I was thinking, "man, wtf ?!?!"...

I used to enjoy watching MTV's Real World when it first came out years ago...again people and that social interaction dynamic. Every other episode, there was a black guy that signed up to be on the show and like clockwork, a few weeks down the line, he would alienate himself from the group, mope around claiming he wanted to be around his own people and that noone understood him. Whenever that piece dropped, I always wondered why they voluntarily apply to the show in the 1st place knowing that 97.4% of the housemates were always white. There was usually the gay guy (flamboyant or not), the solo black guy (angy, emo or both), the hot hispanic chick (who doesnt dig latin women) and 5-7 other cast members that were white and usually confused by behavior of the minority in one form or another.

So when all was said and done, I chalked T-Doggs craziness up to the constant stress of living in a zombpacolypse and being extremely sick/running fever etc.

Again to me, I reiterate to me the devs and mods are just another extension of the market for this game. Its all about the dollar nothing else, and if you really think its something else your a bit naive.

As for the flagging post thing you took that out of context for your own spin. Because the next few sentences clearly state I wouldn't get into it as it was my own personal reasons. Further not for nothing you make it sound as if flagging a post takes 10 hours to do when it takes a minute. But again its my own personal reason why suffice to say the post were clearly in violation of the forum rules and I wanted to see what the mods did. Finally some of those post were with a 2nd account I had in my possession for a short time testing something totally different out in game.

But what you decided to do is make it personal comparing my postings to a petty issue or complaint and if I was only so concerned with real life issues as I was with forum issues the world would be a better place. Unfortunately for you I do my share, heck I know I do more then my share. Remember you brought up the comment not me. I'm just addressing your concerns.

You say you don't have the time because your such a busy man but you seem to be able to reply well enough and you seem to reply well enough in other threads. So I have no clue why you would try to pretend as if your time was so valuable that you can't spare you time wasting it on something like this. "Oh if I only had your time to waste it all away posting here", but wait I do so let me retort to your reply. Either you don't have the time to post or you do. But don't faint one then do the other.

See I will post just to debate, I don't care.
    I have the time.
I don't pretend not to have the time and then post. I have the time and will.

Maybe you should take your own advice and stop wasting your time when you could be posting someplace else.
Like per say in the forum itself helping out another player with their build..
"But unless your personally next to me viewing my actions and emotions you can't say I'm upset one single bit."
Based on your real life description, you sound like the kind of guy I would like to know in the real world and I can appreciate all the solid stuff youre doing (no snark intended).

"Further not for nothing you make it sound as if flagging a post takes 10 hours to do when it takes a minute."
Its not that I thought flagging takes 10hrs, I just dont see why anyone would waste the time doing that...I mean you are very busy IRL and there IS an actual game to play. Even if it only took 10mins, thats 10mins youll never get back that could have been spent doing something more productive. I suppose I see your reasons, but my life isnt half as busy as yours and I dont feel like I would have the time to flag anything.

"But what you decided to do is make it personal comparing my postings to a petty issue or complaint and if I was only so concerned with real life issues as I was with forum issues the world would be a better place... I'm just addressing your concerns."
Concern - to relate to; be connected with; be of interest or importance to...
Sexy redheads concern me, soldiers fighting/dying concern me, the economic state of this country concerns me. This stuff we're ichatting about is just entertaining. We are on the interweb and anything you take personally is on you...I dont feel the same about anything that you have said towards me, I just enjoy a healthy debate sometimes when I see something that I consider strange/out of place. Again, your posts in this thread seem very over the top considering the idea that is being discussed...thats just me or maybe not since others have said similiar things to you here.

"You say you don't have the time because your such a busy man but you seem to be able to reply well enough and you seem to reply well enough in other threads. So I have no clue why you would try to pretend as if your time was so valuable that you can't spare you time wasting it on something like this."
It not the quantity of time spent for me, but the quality. I comment in a lot of threads and for the most part, the light hearted aspect of my posts are nowhere near the supernova massive gravitational pull of the comments that you have in this thread. I dont dig through anyones thread history so I dont know if you sound this "angry" all the time or not. People hate discussing heavy topics with me IRL b/c if I feel strongly about something, I go all out in that discussion. You have displayed even more tenacity in this thread about the creation of a new forum type as I do when discussing politics, race and religion with friends and family. To each their own, but this IS a video game topic.
Secondly, I work stateside for 6 months and do the other half of the year in Afghanistan. No family etc etc and I applaud you on all the things you have going on...some great stuff, but when Im home, I just like to play the game and screw around on the forums. Ive always felt if a person pours so much angst into a forums topic, they must really have a great life and this is an outlet of sorts. I just see too much outside of the game to get worked up about anything inside the game.

Ill leave it at this...do me one favor and take a look at your posts here and if you dont feel like doing that, then look at a few of your quotes from my earlier talk with you. If you honestly dont see ANYTHING wrong with at least some of the things you are laying out in this thread and I am so off the mark in the the way I described them...then my next post will simply be an apology.

    Take care man.

I just got off work and watched this week's episode as well as the 30min talky/comedy format that accompanies it. Glad to see that they asked some questions during that piece that were also brought up here in the thread. I think we could actually outgeek anyone out there

Different strokes for different folks, but I think its a really great production. Some of it is what Mental Giant spoke about and also, at the end of the day, I enjoy a good drama. That part translates well from the comic for me; at the heart of the concept we all know its not a killer zombies "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" show, but actually a look at the human condition in the face of a horrible, almost insane reality. Its all about people and interactions, whether they can live upto the ideal of how humans consider themselves to be so advanced and enlightened OR if they are nothing really more than animals once the the illusion of civilization is no longer present/enforced. THAT is the main part I enjoyed about the graphic novel, how does one "normalize" themselves and their surroundings in an abnormal environment that keeps throwing curve balls?

I have a friend that literally hates the show and stopped watching early in season 1, mostly because of episodes like this one where there was nonexistant zombie activity (until the last few minutes). Its easy for me to see that since hes more of a straight action genre type of guy, hes not going to enjoy the show as much as I do.

And 2short...I have the same problem as your husband, I can not watch poorly done military based shows/movies b/c I find myself getting pissed that someone couldnt consult the proper people to make it all a little more realistic. A few years ago, a civilian friend of mine told me I really needed to watch a show called 'Over There', a military/Iraq war drama. I stopped watching the second an episode came on where a 15 star General is giving orders directly to a Staff Sergeant and his "crew" for a low level tactical mission. It just doesnt happen like that. I imagine a lot of cops feel the same way about "police" dramas on TV. Since Im not a expert on zombies or the human experience, I can actually sit back and enjoy this show, but maybe it drives psychologists insane lol...idk.

I think when most imagine Farnk Castle/Punisher, its from a comic book perspective VS some of the non-traditional roles shown in the movies. The history behind his character is a former Marine with multi-disciplinary military training from the Army, Navy and other countries around the world during the Vietnam War era. So the issue is...whether anyone who actually likes the "real" Punisher even considers the non comic versions relevant.

I think there was a 2099 version of the Punisher where he is a cop though (not Frank Castle) and maybe this is a spin of that idea.
  17. Silly is just silly. They hope to throw this wacky concept together and garnish support by adding The Punisher name to the production.

If theyre going to change the back story so drastically, why not just be original, make a new story and put on a knockoff label like, "The Chastiser" or "The Getter"?

I just found this thread/forum...hope that explains my inactivity. You could have asked and I would have told you, but I can tell that you have a lot of free time, so cool.

I think my point was/is clear...I feel your reaction about a new forums venue seems overkill. Its the formation of a new place on coh.com to post builds, not a philisophical debate on the differences of modernism VS postmodernism perspectives of theology in a society where the need for a god figure seems to be less necessary. You are putting a lot of weight into a topic that seems very meh to say the least.

Im simply baffled by your posts in this thread because you seem soooooOOOOOOOOooooo mad. Examples that I hope visualize my point:

"This is totally ridiculous. Its as if your just making stuff up to justify your existence."
Refer to the soooooo mad statement above...

"I have never in this game had a dev, moderator, or GM ever do anything helpful for me. To me they are like false prophets and snake oil salesmen."
    lolsooooooooooooooooupset...

"Its not nerd rage. Its lack of common sense on the side of those that make these silly decisions."
Actually, this is the epitome of nerd rage.

"They want to add another forum when they can't even moderate what they have now. I personally tagged over 40 threads and posts that violated forum rules and policy and have went back a week later to see nothing absolutely done about it."
You tagged over 40 posts? Really? Like I said, I want your life because you have the time, energy and inclination to tag interweb stuff.

I could continue quoting, but I hope you can pick up what Im putting down at this point. All Im say is that you are very very very upset over this idea. If its such a bad plan as you have pointed out...isnt it simpler to just skip this area and continue operating as usual? Especially in light of all of your real world activity...the amount of time you have spent here with such a negative viewpoint seems so unbalanced.

edited - I think you would be an excellent political activist

The level of fervor in which you criticize this issue, I havent even seen people display in real world "real" topics like the plight of starving chidren or why the US is in other countries fighting wars considered unnecessary etc etc

As for the posted sentiment that some have brought up that you have to pour over thousands of MM/Blaster/Brute builds to look for a Troller specific build...try using the Search function, its the bee's knees.

I can see the concept behind this as explained by the red names and dont think anything malicious or silly in making the decision. You either use it or you dont...not sure what the big deal is.

I understand and I know that these story arcs arent always in line with the comics (example - the "Aqualad" character). Ive always been a fan of the Shazam character and have followed him here and there, but he was closer to a 13yo+ teenager in the items that I have read. In this show, he is portrayed more as a pre-teen...he sounds very much like my 8yo nephew.

If you look him up on the interwebz, Billy Batson/Shazam has been portrayed in many different "alternate" versions and its acceptable to me to see him this way.

"You have to remember he's a kid at heart", this is more literal than you think b/c he really does come from a different era being created in the 30s and his catch is that the writers decided it would be good for him to retain that outlook on life even in modern times.

    Good stuff

Ice does not offer the same generic protections all around, but at the same time the protection it does offer can be much stronger and more varied. It offers capped defense to only s/l/e/n. This at first seems a raw deal, until you realize how much stronger s/l defense is than any other type, as s/l accompany the vast majority of attacks. Ice gets capped cold resistance and a modest amount of fire resistance to make up for its lack of defense there. It still has a hole to psi damage and its HP boost is largely ineffective, but it has some other interesting things. It has a -dam/slow aura that will stack with defenses to further increase your survival. It has a pbaoe sapping power that can push you closer to the isoftcap, as well as effectively drain foes if slotted right (drained foes don't attack and few resist this). Then comes icy bastion, the jewel of the set, delivering significant chunks of resistance to all damage but psy, and increasing your regen and recovery significantly. All the varied forms of mitigation can combine to make one seriously tough character.
