That's why I'd actually be in favor of him giving it a shot. He loves the series, so he'd treat it with respect; but he'd have enough of a sense of humor to poke fun at it every now and then.

I think it's very important to have a healthy disdain for things you love. It keeps things in perspective and lets you push the envelope in surprising ways. One of my main complaints with the new Dr. Who series was that it seemed like every other episode I had to sit through some speech about how amazing, magical, and tragic the Doctor is.

And boy does THAT get old fast.

Well, the "heroes always win" phrase isn't entirely accurate.

It's actually, "heroes always thwart villain's plan and villain always escapes to do it all again next week; same Bat-time, same Bat-channel".

Wouldn't be the first time. "Radar Men From the Moon" and "King of the Rocketmen" both used the same rocket suit. The same robot was used in at least two of the ones I have. Re-using props and padding the story with stock footage and repeated scenes were some of the favorite tricks to keep the cost down.

    NO!

    Do NOT encourage him!

Don't let insults like "codswallop" and "American" shake your faith in super heroics. That's what they want! Don't give into them. Do you know what these people lead to?

    Do you?

THESE PEOPLE ARE WHY MARY MARVEL TURNED EVIL!!!

You want to know where Cable's ginormous guns and shoulder pads came from?

Look no further than these "shades of gray" they keep praising.

Sure, it's great to inject your hero with a little humanity; give them a few flaws. We've all done it.

    But it's a slippery slope.

Soon you'll be tempted to darken their past with some contrived tragedies. Nothing too overt, just a dash of angst. But then you find yourself craving more. Next you have them accidently letting someone die. Mmmmmm, that angst is tasting good now, ain't it. Maybe just a bit more. Maybe (oh, do I dare), maybe a loved one is MURDERED!

Maybe the hero KILLS the murderer!!

MAYBE WITNESSES SEE HIM DO IT!!!!

MAYBE HE'S NOW A WANTED CRIMINAL!!!!!!!

And before you know it, you're on a forum about a comic book game, ranting because someone made a generic comment like "heroes are good and always win"; using words like "codswallop".

Beware people; it COULD happen to YOU.

Definitely one of the drawbacks of the movie serial. They're best watched with other people there to help you riff. I also like to have them on in the "background" while I'm doing something like working on the computer or something.

Haven't come across the Phantom yet.

I've seen both Batman ones, both Green Hornets, Capt. America, Capt. Marvel, and the Shadow.

I still haven't gotten around to any of the Superman ones yet.

Hey all, the other day I was re-watching the SciFi channel's (yes, I'm still spelling it that way ) homage to movie serials; The Mercury Men.

I've always loved old movie serials and am building up a little collection of them.

"Batman and Robin", featuring millionaire Bruce Wayne's suburban home.
"The Mysterious Dr. Satan", where the old scientist's secretary totally upstages the hero.
"Captain Marvel", where the noble Captain casually tosses mobsters off buildings.
"King of the Rocket Men", who Commander Cody totally ripped off.
    And so many more...

There's really not much point to this thread other than seeing if anyone else enjoys these things and, if so, whether you've seen "Mercury Men". The series really surprised me with how pitch perfect it was.

I figured they'd completely miss the mark, but the tone and feel of everything was top notch. Overly dramatic, gorgeously cheesy and with some actually pretty spectacular effects. They had the cliffhanger endings, they had the episode recaps, they had the fantastical action. They even had an episode padded out entirely with stock footage; something I always watched for in a serial.

I highly recommend this show if you can appreciate it for what it is. I'd love it if SciFi would continue the story.
  12. Y'know, I'm actually starting to appreciate the Twilight series, just cause it's produced so many hilarious jokes.

"Wait, wasn't he just wearing a shirt?"
  13. I'd approve of this design.

As long as he's fighting another monster and shooting frickin' mouth-lasers.
  14. Eh, looks a little silly to me.

Also, I'm getting a strong contradiction between the utility of the non-ears and the stiletto heels.
  15. If my entire life was going to be subject to the guidelines of this movie.....?

I'd go for an animated/CG kids' action movie ala Incredibles, Kung-fu Panda, Megamind, etc.

That way I could be a cool hero and I could be fairly sure that I'll always win in the end, I'll learn important lessons that make me grow as a person, and I'll eventually get the girl, if there is one.

The most I'd have to worry about is MAYBE a close friend or parent dying at some point; but even then it wouldn't be something that would haunt me for the rest of my days. I'd make my peace with it and overcome my grief just before the big climax of whatever adventure I happen to be on at the time.
  16. I heard they were planning five movies altogether. Maybe they're doing this instead?

If so, I think I'd rather have them do the movies.

Hopefully. Though with Nolan's refusal to use any of the more fantastical elements of the Batman mythos, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up looking more like an underground bunker than a cave.

It was like; sure, he acted like he knew best. But mostly because he usually DID.

I get a little frustrated with Nolan's movies (excellent movies) because I'm constantly seeing the possibilities that will never happen. I'm thinking about how great characters like Poison Ivy or Robin could be in movies of this caliber.

But since Nolan deems such characters and concepts as too silly for his serious Batman movies, we'll never get the chance to see them.

My only hope is that once Nolan moves on they won't reboot the franchise. If they continue on from there, we might actually be able to get some of the usual Batman trappings.

Since this is early in Batman's career I can get behind the re-purposed military gear idea; but I'm really starting to long for a little more. Heck, even the Bat-cave was only featured briefly in the first movie before being destroyed. Hopefully it'll be back for the next one, but you never know. Nolan might prefer the featureless room we had in Dark Knight.

Sorry to hear about his death. One of the members of a SG I used to belong to also died. Always a sad thing.

This is what I always say when companies make some big change to combat the "problem" of their continuity.

Yeah, the Ultimate universe was cool too, until it turned to ****.

Of course the DC reboot isn't even trying to fix continuity, even though that was sorta part of the pitch. It's really no different than Superboy punching the walls of reality.

"Okay, we're using this plot to fix/change some things in our universe's history. You won't know what was changed or how for awhile, but we'll get to it eventually."
