We can look at the big arguments on this and apply them equally well to the Melee toons. If they are teamed with squishies the melee should go in and draw the aggro and the squishies should need to debuff/buff what have you to make certain the melee doesn't get mezzed. This is teamwork.
You do realize that when a tank gets mezzed his taunt aura drops, right? If a tank is out of commision for even a couple seconds all those critters he had beating on him shift their attention to the rest of the team. At which point the squishies will be doing all they can just to stay alive, and the tank will probably never get unmezzed.

If no one at all had mez protection...well scrappers would be unplayable for one. Unable to solo at all because they can't enter melee before they are mezzed. Not very useful on teams because they're getting mezzed and the defender is focusing on the people that do more damage or can soak more agro.

An Empath, Thermal, Sonic, or Pain Dom character would be absolutely mandatory on a team that included a tank that they wanted to be at all useful, and that character would spend the majority of their time making sure they weren't mezzed.

Melee characters would ba a joke, and avoided like the plague because they would need assistance just to stay active and alive, people would build teams of all squishies because it is more efficient (since teams built like that work just fine now)

The same would hold true if everyone had mez protection as well. Why play a scrapper when a blaster kills faster and doesn't have to get into melee? Why play a tank when a controller can keep the team just as safe, and be of more use in the process.

When someone says: "Give everyone mez protection" I hear: "Gut melee ATs".

Withstanding mez is the ONLY thing that another AT cannot do better and more efficiently. AoE damage? Fire blaster or corruptor. Agro soaking? MM in Bodyguard mode, or Ill/Anything controller. AV soloing? Ill/Rad controller, Rad/Sonic defender, Ice/Cold or Sonic/Cold corruptor. Single target damage? Sonic blaster, Ice blaster, same with corruptors. Everything that a melee character can do, a squishy can probably do better, except withstand mez.

If everyone had mez protection, melee characters would become useless and obsolete, because it is the only thing that someone else can't do better.

You can view that as a challenge if you like: Name ONE thing aside from withstanding mez that a ranged AT cannot do better than a melee AT.

That's strange, my Rad/Sonic doesn't have that problem, and I almost never use Siren's Song with him, and seldom use the debuffs while soloing. I get by fine with just Screech and Dominate 90% of the time.

I hate exemplaring my kin/psi/psi defender, because without Mass Hypnosis and Dominate from the epic, she is a total mez magnet.
Will Domination and Scramble Thoughts aren't good enough? You have options before Epics, it's not the game's fault you chose not to take them.
  4. What I don't get here is the attitude of the pro-mez protection crowd in this thread.

Ignoring something does not invalidate it.

It has been explained time and time again that there are ways available to everyone to avoid being mezzed. It just comes in different forms for various ATs. Yet you all insist that it is unbalanced because the melee ATs have passive protection, while other ATs have active protection.

    Yes, that's right, protection.

    pro⋅tec⋅tion

    –noun
    1. the act of protecting or the state of being protected; preservation from injury or harm.
    2. a thing, person, or group that protects: This vaccine is a protection against disease.

By the definition of the word you keep throwing around so glibly, any means used to prevent mez is protection from it, whether it is passive (the state of being protected) or active (the act of protecting) All are considered protection as the word is defined.

So, the entire argument is moot because squishy ATs DO have protection from mezzes, they just have to actively employ it. Or are you going to tell me the dictionary is wrong as far as what the word means?

More likely you will ignore this entire post because it's telling you something you don't want to hear, and valid points you don't like are automatically wrong in your eyes, your own ability to prove them so notwithstanding.

    Next?

Edit: Upon consideration I have realized this post will be dissected and quoted out of context. Definition 2 that I put in here will be waved around as confirming what you have all been saying, while definition 1 (which is every bit as valid) will be completely ignored.

So please, do go ahead and twist my words in an attempt to make them wrong. If anyone disputes my definition of the word protection you can go to dictionary.com and check it yourself.

I've even refuted some of them. Using inspirations heavily to bypass or overcome the issue is, as I've noted, usually an indication of an actual issue. Not a solution.

I even turned the question on its head (removing Mezz protection solo) and got very incoherent responses. All the way from 'they have to have it to function' and 'no one needs mezz protection to solo really.'

Never did get a good response if it was 'fair' for squishies to not have mezz protection, why shouldn't it be 'fair' for non-squishies to have the same level of challenge.

That pretty much boiled down to 'how dare you challenge my scrapper the same way that stupid defenders are challenged!' And that they've always had it, so don't you dare change it.

Yes, it IS fair for squishies to not have mez protection, they have other ways of dealing with it. There are a very small number of powerset combinations that have no way at all of dealing with a mez, and once you include epic pools, that number reduces to 0. Every AT has at least one mez power in a pool that is available to them.

Melee characters cannot prevent mezzes from targeting them in most cases until they get epic pools. Several have melee range mez effects, but that does not prevent them from being targeted with a mez from outside their range.

Therefore, they get mez protection to make up for their lack of ability to avoid it.

No ability to avoid = mez protection. Ability to avoid = no mez protection. I really don't see why that logic is so hard to understand.

If you really want squishies to get mez protection, put them in the same boat as melee ATs and take away their ability to mez at range until level 41. That's where the balance has been struck, and if you want to change that balance, you need to equalize it. The devs have apparently deemed that the ability to mez at range and protection form mezzes combined is not balanced with the rest of the game. Even the sets that DO give you mez protection (FF and Sonic) don't have much in the way of other useful powers that increase your combat effectiveness.

On standard difficulty (which is what the game is balanced around) any squishie can solo with a minimum of difficulty. Don't be upset because your defender can't solo x8 missions, they were never meant to. Hell, the only melee characters that can do it easily are insanely expensive high end builds. Out of all my scrappers, I have exactly ONE that can solo on that high of a difficulty, and he's not consistent in it. If I'm not paying attention I die just as quickly as anything else. I also spent over half a biliion influence on his build. There are controllers that can do so easily, and my Rad/Sonic defender solos better than most of my melee toons, slower, but very safely.

All ATs are not equal at all things, nor should they be. High end scrapper builds can solo AVs. There are a number of squishy ATs and powersets that can do the same with much less of an investment. Those same squishy ATs and powersets also add much more to a team than a scrapper ever will.

There is no way to tell which ones you've killed if you didn't make notes about them beforehand.

I just wrote them down on a sheet of paper.

So, if you didn't make notes about them you are pretty much SOL.

I'll bet you need Anti-Matter to finish it. He can only be found in Tina MacIntyre's arc, so if you outleveled her before you started working on AVs you may have never gotten to fight him. He usually shows up pretty early in her arc, so you can Ouro it and get him pretty quick.

You can't get ANY of them from bank missions. You probably ran the arc and didn't realize which AVs you needed for the badge, none of them appear anywhere but those two arcs.

Edit: Tina's arc is called The Praetorian War, Maria's is A Hero's Hero. That's what you look for on the Ouro lists.
  7. Well, your first point is already possible.

When your faction is in control in Siren's Call you can buy the temp powers and use them wherever. I still have some uses of the EMP Glove and Web Grenade remaining on my stalker, and I have used them in regular missions. The only thing that is limited still is the jump pack and jet pack, the half hour time limit keeps counting down outside the PvP zones. But, you still have that half hour if you leave the zone.

Melee characters have a secondary that is defensive based for a reason. You would have difficulty surviving if you did not have those powers. Not difficulty being effective, difficulty surviving. Super Reflexes, Willpower, and Ninjitsu already lend themselves to non-powered concepts, Ninjitsu even has gadgets in it already. But, if you had a secondary that was nothing BUT gadgets you would have the survivability of a blaster, only you would be FORCED into melee range.

It's not so much a concept limitation as it is a game balance one. The devs don't seem to want to give us a powerset that is inherently gimped compared to others in that AT. Gadgets as a scrapper secondary would be extremely gimped compared to a high level SR. And it would be horrible for tanks.

I actually PMed BaBs about the possibility of using the Prestige Power Slide animation in conjunction with Flight to achieve a hover-board kind of effect. Apparently it's a lot harder to do than it sounds, due to how the animation works, he didn't really go into detail on it.

A jet pack would be a costume option. We don't have backpacks because of the way the anchor point works. The anchor point is actually in the middle of the body, and depending on your size you would have a jetpack hovering out from the body or buried inside it. Only the default size would work, meaning you couldn't change your body size at all with it.

The glider cape is a new one to me, not a bad idea, but there may be problems animating it, they didn't have capes at launch because they were having trouble with the animations, I imagine there would be similar issues with something like this.
  8. I like the fact that, if you see a Claws/Regen scrapper named Claws and Effect on Pinnacle, you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that it is ME.

Not one of any number of people who thought the name was clever and decided to use it.

What Samuel Tow said holds true. People that are well known in this community are recognizable if they are on their signature characters. Yes, we have signature characters, just like the devs take the identity of the signature heroes in the game.

Bill Z Bubba, Friggin' Taser, Claws and Effect, and anyone else you care to name. Those are our identities in the context of this game.

My real name is Chris. A very common name. Within the world of City of Heroes, I am Claws and Effect. There is no other person known as that. (at least not on my server)

I go by Claws for short, because you can type it faster, or C&E. If someone says "Hi Claws" in a global channel, they are talking to me, and no one else. It would suck if someone said "Hi Claws" and then had to clarify who exactly they meant.
  9. Welcome aboard. And you chose my home server as one of your starting servers. If you run across me in-game I'll be more than willing to help you out (provided I'm not too busy or about to log out, the first one seldom happens)

Pinnacle has a great community, so much so that I have a hard time playing anywhere else.

    Enjoy your stay.
  10. It comes in spurts for me, I'll run a few missions and get nothing at all, then I'll run one mission and it nearly fills up my recipe inventory. It doesn't seem like there's a shortage, just that I get dry spells where I get almost nothing occasionally.

Probably just a perception thing, like the "accuracy nerf". If things are going well you don't notice, but then the random number generator takes a dislike to you for a few minutes and you get the impression of being less accurate.

"What the hell? I just missed 5 times in a row!" ....and most people don't stop to consider that the previous 95 attacks all hit.

As far as purples go, it's an average of every 1500-2000 defeats, not a guarantee. I get very few of them, but I know people who have gotten as many as 3 in one mission.

The small chance for TF recipes to drop from bosses (only bosses as far as I know, minions and LTs won't drop them) is very nice.

I have definitely noticed an increase in drops, but I've also noticed that it's a little more streaky now.

If I recall correctly, it will have a chance to give endurance to both you AND your targets, since all are considered targets of the power. Power Sink works the same way I think.

I wouldn't put the proc in Drain Psyche. A) It will give your foes end as well as you B) you only get a 20% chance every 2-3 minutes instead of every 10 seconds.
  12. I very seldom have trouble coming up with a name that I like.

Examples within the last few months:

Snowstrike, Magmaflow, Magnetic North, Realityburn, Amplified (that one surprised me)

All good superhero names, and all were available when I tried, spelled correctly even.
  13. Merging server lists - Yes, good idea.

Merging the servers themselves - No, horrible idea.

I play on a system that barely handles the lag in highly populated zones on Pinnacle. if all servers had the same population as Freedom I would be literally incapable of playing the game. (I know this because I've tried to play on Freedom)

That's why I play on a lower population server. There are probably a large number of people in the same situation as me that cannot afford a top of the line gaming rig. We would lose players simply because people's computers cannot handle the extra load of a lot of activity going on at once.

Also, I would be highly annoyed if I became Claws and Effect@Claws and Effect.
  14. You have to actually build the base before you can enter it. Talk to the guy that you talk to to set up the VG, there's an option to build SG base in there.

Yup, met my wife in CoH. At the time I was in Ohio and she was in Iowa....now we're both in Iowa. At the time she was a relatively new player, and now she has more 50s than I do.

She also has a better scrapper than me...which is just galling because I pride myself on my scrappers.

Currently her computer is down with a burned out hard drive, so only one of us can play at a time, usually me because she doesn't like the laptop's keyboard and I'm used to it.

Electric has....Lightning Field and Power Sink.

With Fiery Aura you'd have: Good resistances (not as good as Electric, but still pretty good), a very nice heal, possibility of double build up, and a good damage power if you have a primary (or secondary) that can leverage it.

The defense from Shields as a power pool would probably take Fiery Aura from slightly underpowered to very overpowered. Because you would get all the things mentioned above plus the ability to softcap, which I have not managed to do in a Mid's build yet.

Also, how do you deal with a power pool....that is accessible to people already playing Shield Defense?

2 copies of all positional defenses by level 14? With tanker numbers that is 30% defense to everything, unslotted, at level 14. Above softcap with just normal slotting, not even taking IOs into account.

By the nature of power pools, they are available to everyone which is why their effects are generally pretty mediocre.

A set of powers specifically focused on positional defense that is available to everyone would make already powerful builds just insanely broken.

Wouldn't it be nice to have an electric shield to match your electric armor or a dark shield too match your dark armor? I think it would be a very popular set for these reasons and could help balance out certain sets. It could look something like this:

Shield Deflection (6) Toggle: Self +DEF(Melee), +Res(Lethal, Smashing)
Shield Agility (6) Toggle: Self +DEF(Ranged), +Res(Defense Debuff)
Shield Cover (14) Toggle: Self +Def(AoE), +Res(Fire, Cold, Energy)
Shield Team (20) Toggle: PBAoE, Team (but not self) +DEF(All)

Anyway. Lots of people probably want a cool shield but not an entire power set, we're not all Captain American

P.S. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong spot. I'm a new player and first time poster to the forums.
First off, Suggestions and Ideas would be a better place for this.

Second, um, gonna have to say no on this one.

Electric Armor already has higher resistances than the other armors. That's because it gets no defense to go along with it. The other resistance sets generally have some defense. Willpower has typed defense, Invuln has Invincibility, Dark Armor has Cloak of Darkness (same numbers as Weave). Only Electric Armor has no defense in the set itself, so it gets higher resistances to make up for it.

If Shields was available as a power pool, an Electric tank would be able to have capped or near capped resistance (definitely capped to Energy) and softcappable defense. That would be insanely overpowered (think Granite with no movement or recharge penalties overpowered)

Also, instead of making new animations for just the melee sets to accomodate a shield, they would have to make new animations for EVERYTHING.

I also think it unlikely that they are going to give something like this to blasters. They are powerful enough without softcapped defense (I have seen a few builds get in the 30-35% range already), if they had that potential, they would get stupid overpowered pretty quickly.

Interesting idea, but the amount of work and the balance issues would be huge on it.

I mentioned Empaths a while back in my post. Pretty sure I wasn't saying "lolhealers".

I was saying that the people that insist on having one on the team usually can't tell the difference between a good one and a bad one. A good one is an asset that will make the team better, a bad one is, more often than not, a space on the team that could be better used. Unfortunately, I've been seeing a lot of bad ones lately.

On the same note, a lot of those same people have teamed with a bad Dark or Stormie, and it has colored their perception of the sets.

I had a blaster I ran with a D3 for the first 4 signature TFs in a row. I have not gotten through them faster before or since, largely because of the D3s contribution. Dark gets the majority of it's good powers fairly early, so it is ideal for low level TFs like that.

Storm is a good or bad set, depending on the player. They either make the team a steamroller, or they cause teamwipes. Not a whole lot of middle ground I have seen.

Well, I for one have been enjoying the debate. It's been a lively one, and it has for the most part stayed civil.

It's rare to have a debate on these forums go on this long without turning into a mudslinging contest, and I like it when one does.
  22. Just turned 30 last week.

I was actually kinda bummed about it, thanks for making me feel better
  23. Invuln will probably work better for you. It meshes with Spines nicely, with a taunt aura that boosts your defense for every foe in range.

There's nothing wrong with SR and Spines, just Invuln plays to the strengths of Spines
  24. Sure, if the KB from Crane Kick doesn't go off. If it does you have to chase your target to finish the chain, that hurts DPS a little. Hurts it more if it happens consistently.
