If that's the case, then the writers should have set up something in WWD6 that her soul is being ripped to shreds, forced from her into the bodies of EVERYONE in Paragon (now THAT would have been an epic level spell), and being impossible to recoalesce, there isn't enough left of Psyche to bring back.

Otherwise, nope, she's now just "an ex psychic."

As much as I loathe "handwaving," I suspect that's what's going on here. Unless we find out in WWD7 that Wade deliberately set up some sort of spell to prevent her being brought back (or something to that effect), then it's just a matter of "she's dead and can't be brought back because we say so, so there."

    Regarding the bold- not really.

Back when Khelds were introduced, they were making the npcs as a kind of 1-piece character model, not a collection of costume pieces. Because of that, those pieces needed to be re-developed from scratch, not just ported over to player characters.

A few issues ago, one of the devs noted that most NPCs were being built differently-- using the character creator rather than as a single art asset-- and that this would make porting over those new costume pieces to players much easier.

Thats how we got the CoT pieces so quickly, and that's why we only have the female sash- it was only re-done for the female Carnival of Light NPCs.

I fully support making this sash available for male characters (and making it have patterns other than checkers... and making it available under belt options for jackets and other places. I'm just correcting the incorrect assumption that this 'already works for males."

    Simple.
To help minimize the transition, it's best to keep close to what you're used to rather than replace it entirely. You've moved on from "design," so remove it.

(Original title) - ("Design") + (adjust for grammar) = "Queen of the World"

Or why can't I buy Piece X that normally costs 40 points for 4 points for that one character who could really use it?
Trying not to compare and contrast, but I do have to say that the dev pricing on sets is already very generous. I've seen loot-based systems that charge similarly for single costume items that DO apply to just one character (and that you can outlevel). I think the devs went into this aware that this was a limit and priced things in a way that was already generous to the user.

  8. More than anything- If devs can't make the system hide what I already have or am already entitled to (VIP status freebies), let me hide them. Sifting through the mess as it is just isn't user-friendly. The costume pieces that I have yet to buy are buried by the pieces I already have.

I hope not. I'm already a t9 paying mostly out of a sense of loyalty... and the hope of more paywall-gated non-incarnate content (think:first ward) to keep me feeling like paying is right for me...

The takeaway shouldn't be "Premiums are second-class,"

That in itself would be a lie, because they certainly are. Actually, they're more like 3rd class or worse.

    the game is miserable
You said it, not me, but...though the words are harsh, they are also true as I've seen it. The experience has been a poor one. I only paid to access she who was my first(Get your head out of the gutter), the one I spent the most time and work on. Buying more would be pointless, as there is nothing I truly desire in the entire list. Not even AE rewards.

The restrictions on premium do not lead me me to desire VIP. They lead to depresion and annoyance. Whilst this can be effective tactic for purchase, it's...the game should be saying '"You rock, but VIP can make you rock MORE!" Currently, it's "You want no not suck? Go VIP!" as it crushes you into the dirt. Can't explain it any other way, what with the deaths I've been taking on my weakers. You hit your buttons and still die against things your own level. Dunno why.

There was one nice thing I found: The Find Contact button. All right-level contacts, even unknown ones, show up in it, and you can warp to them if you haven't visted them already. That's a good feature.

Many of us beta'd the system as Premiums, and unfortunately as beta testers, we were coming in A LOT more informed than your average returning players. We followed the news, the postings, and the discussions the devs had regarding what they were doing, so unfortunately, we didn't suffer the same stumbling blocks as a returning player that just "downloads and go's."

Because of that, we were pretty crappy test subjects. I'll take some of the blame there.

I've left and returned to MANY MMOs and even when you don't have the jarring alternate-payment-model to deal with, the return trip can be rocky. F2P transitions really do turn things over. The communication should be better- the information put right in front of you before you unlock. There should never be a "I made a decision before the information was provided to me." Then again, all those other MMO's I experienced suffered much the same. If I didn't do the research beforehand, i'd have run into several dozen barriers.

Just because the others do it, though, doesn't mean I think its OK. I expect more from NCSoft. That said:
    - I don't fault them for gating away certain archetypes.
    - I don't fault them for gating away IO's.
    - I certainly don't fault them for limiting their customer support to currently-paying customers. Live support -even modest support- is EXPENSIVE.

We can't compare-n-contrast here, but go to any other hybrid-model MMO and see what free and returning players get. I've tried them. The devs here have been some of the most generous with what they offer to returning players, and the barriers put in place are some of the easiest to ignore. When people get irritated with the complaints, its largely because what IS offered has been rather generous and the complaints sound like indignant self-entitlement issues. Your case was presented much more clearly and hit on very real 'rough spots' so hopefully it won't evoke the same overzealous backlash...

    -----------------
    Second Class... Third Class? Hardly.

The entire game is balanced against characters NOT using the invention system. You get access to a HUGE chunk of the game with a few additional perks- plus the "free" player restrictions removed- with absolutely NO requirement to pay a penny again. Do you get everything that you'd get if you paid a subscription? Of course not. Are you really surprised?

If you haven't used up all your unlocks, consider a fresh-rolled character. The starting zones on each side have been revamped, as you noted, and they're worth experiencing once. it'll help acclimate you to the characters and naturally encounter some of the changes you may have missed during your absence. Then, maybe, give your old mains another round.
  11. Hey, Bloody. Welcome back. Sorry your return was that bumpy.

Obviously, every F2P transition is going to have some pain points- some things that were once part of the subscription have been gated away, either under smaller monthly fees or free if you're a high-enough tier Premium subscriber (you did apply the Paragon Points you've already earned? right?)

Unfortunately, you seem to have stumbled upon most of those pain points- archetype locks, IO locks, etc.

I do wish there was more ingame feedback for these as you stumble into them- yes, others will point to the info on the website and such, but you aren't the first to miss it.

Stick with it- if it makes you feel better, you really HAVE hit the worst of the barriers already.

Well, since I'm not the first 3d hater to post....

Some of the problem isn't the technology, but how its applied. The popular theatre method for 3d actually works best when you're NOT doing Michael-bay-styled fast-moving-camera antics. The faster you move the camera, the more the problem manifests. 3d movies also need to be brighter... or at least higher-contrast offset the darkening effect of the lenses, which many directors never seem to think of. Both of these issues combined create most of the headache issues that many viewers complain about. A good director that's mindful of these limitations should be able to alleviate them.

Fix those and I still wouldn't like 3d. There's never been a single thing that I've felt they added to any viewing experience aside from a lighter wallet, smudges on my prescription glasses (since they rarely fit over the glasses well) and some really funny pictures of my friends looking absolutely ridiculous in them. (Actually, that last option kinda makes up for the rest... until I find out they caught pictures of me in them.).

From what I've seen in 3d games, it kinda fits the same as the movies- although you've added depth, the shading the glasses add (from either the polarization or the rapid-shutter methods) means that low-contrast areas will be even lower contrast. Those tunnels are shadowy enough already... (though I guess brightness/contrast settings can address some of this.

In the PS2/original XBox era, most games released with the standard expectation of 40-60 hours of "original gameplay." This was measured 'time to complete' all the content once, with no repetition and no reloads. Oftentimes the "main quest" could be completed much faster, but to "cover all the content provided" that was the magic number. Several games, notably Bethesda's, often shipped with more than double that.

In the PS3/360 era, most games admit to having well under 20 hours of original gameplay. They may have better replayability (playing the same stuff over and over) but they have less overall content. There are serveral reasons for this trend:

    1) Game content is much more expensive to produce on these more powerful platforms. This encourages developers to economize.
    2) Game reviewers actually started to become critical of large games that they couldn't complete in one review session. Since so many games rely on game reviews, losing a few hours to appease the reviewer gods is a good thing.
    3) Players' attention spans are lower. There are more games produced NOW than there were back then, and they're more heavily marketed and hyped, meaning that players WANT to move from title to title faster to see the next new shiny. Market studies showed that many players didn't complete games that they LIKED just because a new title came out, so longer titles didn't seem to be as much of an incentive.

Granted, some developers have built reputations on bucking that trend (Bethesda).

If you turn people off right away, you've gone against the very principle you're trying to exploit.
    The problem here is communication.

These users aren't seeing anything prior to selecting which characters to unlock to tell them that certain elements of their character are unavailable.

When you first use a "character unlock token" you could receive a pop-up that:
    - checks whether you earned the IO sub via tier 7.
    - checks whether the character has any items that are not accessible by default (Incarnate powers, IO's, etc)
    - notifies you of that fact, and the options available.

The game is complex. F2P tiers make it even moreso. Returning players are sometime "jumping in the deep end" already. Helping people make informed decisions can make them feel more comfortable with occasionally opening their wallets to you.

I'm fine with the IO's being somewhat paywall-gated. I just wish the information was less easily missed.
  17. Of course, there's a simpler explanation:

As a participant in "A Faultline in the Sands of Time," the 12-year-old was "entrusted with the secret" of Ouroboros.

    Big.
    Mistake.

There are conflicting reports on whether she spent the next decade of her life traveling through time honing her skills as a heroine or whether she spent it attending her favorite boy-band's concerts over and over and over (and over and over), but at least one Justin Beiber concert video shows at least seven Penny Yin lookalikes in the front row.
  18. I'm beginning to see this as less of a "writing issue" and as yet more proof that my once-in-jest theory may in fact be true.

We have Dark Astoria's fall identified as occurring in different eras, characters of shifting ages in different eras, numerous plaques that seem to contradict one another, and continuities that... well... aren't. We even have hints of dimensional barriers weakening and "versions" of our selves from other worlds appearing in our own.

It really IS as if the developers decided to take all the continuity, retcon, and "retelling" elements of comic books and built a world that intentionally incorporated all of it in its very fabric: universes in constant collision; time travel paradoxes knotting up the timeline; and reality-shifting devices that have rewritten parts of the world more than once. Maybe the CoH "world" our characters call home is more like the fragmented convergence of many worlds and reflects not just an amalgamation of past dimensional reality-shifts, but of ones ongoing at this very moment.

PvP was supposed to be a big part of the 'endgame' content, because each fight would be fresh and challenging... Until they learned how much of a headache it was to balance the game for it, and how much hate they got over trying to make it work equally for everyone. The Arenas were introduced as early as I-4 to test and prep for the inclusion of PvP as a big part of 'endgame' content. I think one of the biggest failings with it was the lack of objectives beyond 'kick the pancake out of your opponent', but that's my opinion.

The A.E. was supposed to be a big part of the 'endgame' because it was a source of undending story arcs and player generated content, until they learned a lot of folks would just make farms and PL with it, and not even learn how to leave Atlas Park. Not my opinion. That's a true story, I remember it, and was there for the help requests of the level 50 'PL babies' that didn't even know how to play the game. If you weren't there... yes, it was that bad.
Its true that we've seen several elements the devs provided as 'endgame' options, but none of these were intended to be THE endgame. Back in 2005, in several prominent interviews in gaming magazines, the bigwigs in NCSoft expressed their own idea on how to retain players and it required NO endgame at all. That's because they thought *it isn't about retaining players in one specific game, but retaining them across our entire portfolio of titles.*

In other words, "let them leave when they're done... as long as we own the game that they're leaving FOR."

Most MMO's up to that date had a surge-and-decline lifecycle, and NCSoft rationalized *why toss more and more money at a declining title when you could use it to produce more "surging" new games?* So that's where they focused their investments.

Several of the gaming mag articles I once bookmarked show up as broken URLs, but I found this post which reflects what was openly discussed at the time.)

Since endgame is about "retaining players that have completed the content" and per-game retention isn't a priority, you only need to provide enough to entertain the base until the next title comes out.

The lessons here were painful to NCSoft- a series of titles we won't mention that... well... we didn't leave FOR as they expected. They realized that getting that surge on a new title may not be as surefire as they anticipated. They realized that investing in something that's already proven might give a better return than gambling on several titles that haven't launched yet, and that's around the time Paragon Studios was born.
  22. Most of my 'Villains' are actually more vigilantes/rogues than true villains. I keep my vigilantes as "rogues" just so they remain based in the Rogue isles, rather than just visiting. Most of my bad guys are defined by their weaknesses- that one flaw that keeps them from rising to true heroism.

Partizan sees himself as something of a champion of the little people. I like the idea of otherwise heroic characters put under the overwhelming pressure of trying to survive in the Rogue Isles. He's a claws stalker- no real powers of his own so he doesn't have the luxury of "fighting nice." He uses disguise and deception to get close enough to "cull" the worst from Arachnos. He strives to protect "the weaker" at all costs and has built up a powerful little network to support his cause. As he's risen in power, though, some of the "weaker" underneath him have started to prey upon each other, forcing him to sometimes use intimidation, force, and even lethal measures to make these people live within his rules. He once hated Marshall Brass for "deluding himself into believing he could use the power of Arachnos to protect the people." Now he hates Brass even more... because in Brass he sees a reflection of himself.

Michio is a young man haunted by his personal failings. He looks back on his life and the places where he came up short in doing the right thing. Partially transformed by the Rikti, he was freed from "the shift" but found he'd rather not BE who he was before. He doesn't admit remembering his past, and in that way, escapes his failings. When Arachnos gave him the chance to be someone else- to turn his back entirely on those failings- he took it. Initially reveling in the lifestyle Arachnos offered, he's gradually started to question it and has finally come to learn where true strength lies. He's just feels too powerless to change the path he finds himself or try to recover the life he abandoned.

Russian Blue is a product of Genengineering, born and raised in the lab- used as a test subject. Through her telepathy she learned from her captors- and learned to see the world as they saw her... with indifferent, cold, and cynical eyes. Eventually, she mastered their thoughts and reversed roles, rewriting minds, forcing them to perform experiments on one another, playing with them like bloody puppets. The media called the lab "a torture chamber of unspeakable horror" and its discovery made her an international outlaw. She's survived in the less lawful states like the Rogue Isles surrounded by the darker souls of the world. Sickened by what she's seen in the minds of man, she's blocked herself from reading the surface thoughts of those around her- and in doing so, failed to ever witness other aspects of humanity. Thus, she's never learned hope, charity, or empathy.

Personally, I want the new zone to be sunny, bright, and cheerful with rainbows and ponies...

... and then I want it to put a villain storyline in it that makes use of the game's phasing technology to turn it into a desolate wasteland.
