Actually, my answer was a collective "we don't know," as in, nobody but the Paragon Studios staff knows. And has been said already, they're not allowed to talk until the marketting department gives them the go-ahead.

Everything that a non-Paragon employee knows is in this thread from the HeroCon follow-up:
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=196483

(Different thread--I promise it won't just link to "we don't know" this time. )

The European servers are on a completely different list, and there's only five of them.

Union and Defiant are the only ones you're likely to see anyone talking about, unless you venture into the French or German speaking forums. (Vigilance, Zukunft and Paragon are the others.)
  4. If PVP were based entirely on skill (and luck), with every character having an equal chance at filling a role designated by that AT regardless of their powerset choices, then yes.

As long as it has anything at all to do with min/maxing and grinding for purples, no no no no no no no.

The best part? They both got the badge days before Issue 11.
I did that too. When my character was first created, there WERE no badges. And even when they came out, very few tracked any prior data (only the TF Accomplishment badges, if memory serves).

I spent two weeks in Recluse's Victory. When everybody else was PVPing, beating AVs/Heroes and trading pillboxes, I was sitting in the train station. I was the first person on Victory to get the badge exclusively from fighting Contaminated in RV.

I wore that badge with friggin' pride, though, all the way up until I got the "Architect C" badge. I'd intended to keep that badge title forever, but I had so damn much trouble getting Master of Statesman's Task Force that I finally decided to switch it up and use that title instead.
  6. My only issue with CoH on Windows 7 has been with alt+tabbing out to other windows. In XP, it brought up a little window with icons letting me know what I was selecting, but Win 7 has me jumping blind.

I'm actually really liking Win 7 though. The only other issue I seem to have is that every once in a while (but still several times a day), a mouse click gets read as a two rapid clicks (yet not a double-click, for some reason). This usually occurs when browsing on the internet, and will occassionally send me back TWO pages instead of one when I hit the back button.

I'm not a huge fan of the new graphical effects on the windows (Aero), so I set it to a classic theme and changed it around a bit. Now it looks more or less like Windows 98!

    ... Yes, yes, I'm strange, I know... ._.;;

    The Accolades

    This.

I also don't tend to grind for "mad purples" on my other characters, either. I'll stick mainly to SOs until I get into the higher levels, then slot characters out with common IOs (courtesy of my badge hunters that can make them for half price). I still haven't finished IOing out my main badgers with sets and purples, either.

Of course, I also don't play on the market much, and attempt to build my characters off of drops that I earn or a friend will trade for, so you can take that previous statement with a grain of salt.

Are you sure that's not just the perspective you get from defeating enemies at a much faster rate? If you beat 500 -1s and 500 +4s, you should be within the statistical range of average number of drops either way.
  9. Sadly, you can count me in the group that figured they'd reuse the CoT demons as pets for the Demon Summoning set. I figured some variation on the Fire Imp for the first pet, the regular Demon for the second pet, and the big honkin' winged Demon Overlord for the third pet, with regular Fire Blast powers to fill the personal attacks and different auras for the pet buffs.

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the photos from HeroCon. (See people, it helps to set your expectations low; you'll be happier more often!) I'm most excited to see how the new Fire Whip powers turn out.
  10. While we're talking about power choices...

Limit the number of Power Pool powers you take (available at level 6 on). My very first character back when I started in the beta got as high as level 14... and I had Flurry, Air Superiority, Jump Kick and Hover on him. Thankfully that all got wiped when the game launched and I had no choice but to start over.

If your main character so far is a Scrapper, make sure to take your defense powers and slot them properly... especially your toggles, as they're several times more effective than the automatic powers.

And if your first Scrapper has Super Reflexes as a secondary, you might want to shelve that character for a bit and play with Willpower or Regeneration until you can start to understand how important defense is and get some experience using some of the invention set enhancements that are available later in the game. (Super Reflexes is a great powerset for those that put time, energy and influence into their builds, but you'll fall flat quickly if you don't treat it with the respect it demands.)

Let's see... what else... if you like playing a support character (Defenders especially, but also true of Controllers and Corruptors), make sure you take the powers that give bonuses to your teammates. This will ensure that you'll always be in demand. Kinetics is especially popular with its Speed Boost ability, and Radiation Emission is great for its ability to increase your teammates' effectiveness while simultaneously decreasing that of your enemies. And let's face it, you just can't go wrong with an Empathy (or Pain Domination, if you're playing a Villain) healer.

Don't play a Tanker like a damage dealer. You might have a few really good attacks depending on your attack set, but the recharge on those powers is typically tremendous, leaving you with several weaker attacks to use while waiting to use them again. A Tanker is there to absorb damage and keep enemies from beating up the weaker ATs, and again, are very popular on teams. Many people consider them to be the easiest class to play when first learning the game, since you'll die less often due to your superior resilience.

Above all else, don't be afraid to ask questions.

Oof, I remember that. I was right there with you for about 500 of the SOB's. I was very happy when Issue 10 came out and I was able to get this badge through normal fighting.

  12. hahaha, FANTASTIC video D_R.

That style of music isn't usually my thing, but I got a kick out of the song you used as well.
  13. Saist: Thanks for the very quick reply. Can't beat personal experience! Glad to hear the more-or-less good news.
  14. The default height for each model is different. Males and huge characters I think start at 6'4, while females start at about 5'8.

The scales also don't equate to inches added onto the character. I added 10 to the height of one character set on an athletic male (all sliders at 0) costume, and came to just over 7' (but not quite 7'1).

At the same time, a value of about -6.2 (the default value I originally had saved for that costume) dropped him to just under the 6' mark.

I think what you're effectively doing is adding or subtracting a percentage of the default height when you change the slider... if you do the math, it kind of makes sense:

    6 feet 4 in. = 76 in.

    76 in. * 110% = 83.6 in. = 6 ft 11.6 in., which is just shy of 7 ft.

The height chart in the background is a little off due to perspective, so it's very likely that what LOOKS like just over 7 feet against the chart is actually just under the mark.

    Likewise...

    76 in. * (100% - 6.2%) = 71.288 in. = 5 ft 11.288 in., or just under 6 feet.

Basically, if you want to set a concrete height for a character, you'll have to figure out what it's percentage of the default 76 inch height is for males, or the default 68 inch height for females.

The height scales go between a maximum of +25% (7'11 for males) and a minimum of -33% (about 4'3 for males).
  15. I know that some things matter more than others when it comes to performance, but there are a few things I'm still not so sure about...

I have an Intel D975XBX2 series motherboard with the absolute highest-end processor it will take (2.5GHz Core 2 Quad) 4GB of DDR2 memory, and a separate hard drive dedicated solely to running CoH and a couple other games. The weak link in my system is obviously my super-cheap GeForce 8600, as I've been informed by Windows 7's built-in performance tester (and honestly, I've noticed that the card is kind of crappy, but it was the best one in my price range after my previous card burned out).

I know that PCIe 2.0 video cards are backwards compatible to PCIe 1.0 slots (which is what my mobo has), and that v2.0 vs v1.0 is basically just a bus speed increase.

My conundrum is this: Will I get enough of a performance increase just replacing the video card for one of the recommended cards in the $250 price range?

Or will I need to replace the motherboard (and thus the processor and memory as well) to get the performance necessary out of the new card?

I was actually taught in second or third grade that a list of three things should have two commas, as in "one, two, and three." I learned later that it is redundant, but have only ever had one teacher (in college) tell me that it was outright inappropriate to use the second comma.

Anyway, someone has to use the extra commas left out by the people who refuse to use them at all.

the angst is just too much
You do realize that your 63 month account will be invited first due to being a 5+ year vet, right? Loyalty program invites aren't for another wave or two of beta invites beyond that.
  18. The Gaussian arc "The Red and the Black" in the Rikti War Zone puts you up against a rogue batallion of Vanguard that also puts you in conflict with Longbow.

It can be easily farmed the first time around by resetting the mission, but if you've already run and completed it, the arc is available via Ouroboros as well.
  19. It has been stated that Going Rogue will bring us a new system to "power-up" our "exemplary" Heroes and Villains (i.e., those that don't switch sides).

It was also said that switching sides will not preclude you from experiencing this new system, but it will delay your progress.

Regardless, there will be a way to make your level 50s even stronger than they currently are, and it's not simply going to be new purple recipes. There has been no official information about what this new system might entail, but one theory is that it will be global enhancement slots that affect your character as a whole (as with an invention set bonus), rather than individual powers. This, of course, is what was suggested in the marketting survey a few years ago, with phrasing akin to "bring your character to a theoretical level 60"... but it could be something completely different.

Again, not to sound like a broken record here, but...

    We don't know.

No, they said that Windows 7 isn't required for Ultra Mode. Specifically, they meant the version of DirectX that Win 7 uses.

City of Heroes runs off of a graphics package called OpenGL instead, so no particular DirectX version is required.

This is definitely necessary for your 50s, or at least it was when Issue 16 launched (it might have been rendered unnecessary by a patch between then and now). As Eric said, it's better to be safe than sorry, so I always turn it on when I hit 50 as well.

Also, on top of everything that Catwhoorg and Ironblade mentioned, inf earned by rescuing a citizen in distress (hostage, purse-snatching victim, CoT sacrifice, etc) also counts towards total inf earned. I only mention this for completeness, because it's not really a quick way to earn inf.

Finally, any inf earned in the Mission Architect does not count towards your badge total. Nothing inside the "virtual environment" of the AE building counts towards any badges but the architect-specific ones.

HP has a history of making proprietary case/PSU combos, but it's been a while since I've used an HP tower. I'd call up their customer service line to ask about the PSU before ordering it, just in case.
  24. This happens sometimes when the store options are disabled (usually, down for maintenance). There was a period back in maybe late September or early October when ALL extra character slots were unavailable for most of a weekend because of this.

I could be wrong, but they might have moved the Server Transfer portion out of the actual store for the holiday gift thing so it wouldn't actually charge anyone money, which could possibly leave it available even if the store were down for maintenance.

Alternately, the slot may have "moved" to a different page on your character list. Double check that first before sending a petition. If that's not the case, then by all means, petition away... just don't be terribly surprised if you get a response that it'll be back shortly due to the reasons mentioned above.
