  1. SO I saw your claws/electric armor build in another thread, liked it and started to play around with it.

Some things I have tried tweaking (just thoughts... I am interested in discussing):

    1) Drop slots out of brawl and maybe boxing. I understand using boxing and brawl as mules to boost up smash/lethal defense... but man, it is painful to put slots in stuff I won't use in combat. Is there some other way to protect ourselves in melee?

    2) YES! What about relying on Dark Obliteration's to-hit debuff to effectively hit the smash/lethal soft cap? We can add a hami to-hit debuff/acc Hami to Dark Obliteration for a 6.75% debuff. Defense drops to 38%... but that puts us at the softcap against melee attacks using smash/lethal. I think.

I dropped all of the slots out of brawl. Gained 3. Put 1 in Dark Obliteration, 1 in Energize and 1 in Health.

With these new slots our Regen hits 435% with energize up and makes energize a 48% heal.

    Please challenge me on this.

    3) Have you considered 5 slotting Gloom with Siphon Insight? You gain 3.75% smash/lethal defense. You can get a huge to-hit debuff (8.5%) to use on AVs (since AVs resist to-hit debuffs). Also, it does good damage.

    4) My various tweaks also increased your accuracy. I did drop the +3% resist PvP resist proc mostly because I could never afford that. I also am not sure if 3% resist is worth billions. 3% defense may be since you take no damage when it works.

    5) I also traded out the -res proc (PvP) in Spin and put in a much cheaper Psi damage proc from the taunt set. Seems like Psi damage is not resisted very much and that proc causes direct damage. Seems like a fair trade to me.

    6) It would be great to put a -res proc (Achilles Heel) in Slash, but I need to find a slot somewhere.

    7) Dropped slash and focus. We have enough attacks already.

    8) Move the powers around to ensure the best ones are available early (lightning field).

    What do you think?

  2. On the other hand, if you are already soft capped (and, as an /SD you should be), even a 2% debuff can make a substantial difference in your damage intake. Remember that at softcap the bad guys only have a 5% to hit. Also, with enough AOE attacks, you can reliably ensure x3 applications of the debuff on the mobs around you.

If there is an AV, and you are hitting him with everything, x4 is likewise easy to apply.

I have taken Diagmagnetic over reactive on both of my incarnates. That said, I also tend to take musculature.

Assuming a 45% defense rating, what is an AV's to-hit? 10%? even dropping that by 2% means a 20% reduction in hits.
  3. Hello.

Having almost completed a DM/Shield scrapper (which is the sweetness) and a AR/Energy blaster (I brings the shooty), it is time to select a new build.

I have hit upon Katan/FA: it should have amazing damage output, good survivability and will, of course, look awesome. DM/Shield spoiled me: I had outstanding AOE, single target and survivability in one package. I am hoping Katana/FA can match it.

As any good hero would, I researched the concept on these boards for a bit. After playing with Mids, it seems to me I can do it. Attached is my proposed build.

The defense scores look anemic at first glance, however I can almost soft cap melee with one Divine Avalanche. I also took Shadow Meld and got the reharge below 30 seconds. Shadow Meld as slotted takes all defenses to 50% for 15 seconds.

Between those two and a healing flames I can use every 13 seconds (for half of my health bar), I should do fine, I think.

As for AOE: Burn, Blazing Aura and Lotus Drop should cut down groups pretty quickly especially when coupled with both build-up and fiery embrace.

Also, putting an achilles -res proc in Gambler's Cut is just hilarious for big bosses.

A reality check/optimization commentary from the board would be much appreciated. In particular:
    1) Is the build survivable? Can I run around with Shadow Meld up half of the time and expect to be nigh on immortal?
    2) I the accuracy good enough? Running at about 180% vs. even cons. Seems low to me.

  4. DOODS. I was was able to log in and play for 5 minutes just now. Then the servers shut down again.

    Progress?
  5. Good catch on the miracles. Nice. Fixed.

Hasten only has a 14 second downtime as is. Seems to me that third slot is better used elsewhere.

I also changed it to include fire ball. Ragnorak is amusing. As is melt armor+soul drain.

    New stats:

44% in melee and ranged defense. Not too worried as minions will die with my AOE and bosses will get massive acc debuffs from my attacks.
    45% in AOE
    152% recharge bonus with hasten
    261% regen bonus
    Running at a 2 end/sec surplus
    Max HP at 125%
    34% smash/lethal resistance
    2 AOEs which is fun

    Feeling pretty good about this.

Drop hasten, with proper slotting you can have the S/SL/S/MG chain running all day without the hassle of hasten. plus, fireball is just that good. I like fire blast as well for that little bit of range damage.

You can have all that, 2100HP and should still have softcap def without running combat jumping.
I like hasten. Keeping it. I have the extra power slots. I did try dropping tactics and Body, adding Blaze and slotting fireball with Ragnorok.

Highly amusing. I also like this melt armor idea as a back up to soul drain. I am still at 45% on AOE but dropped to 44% for melee and ranged. I also dropped from 289% regen to 260%.

The second AOE is pretty huge, though. As is the third purple set.

I figure I can drop body as I can run at a 1.7 end/sec surplus and have dark consumption available every minute.

Question: is 200% accuracy good enough? I suppose with perma Soul Drain running, it is.

Hah! You guys should have seen the mess that was Rogue Trader (the 40k precursor). Rules were flat out broken. Harlequins, in particular were out of control.

That said, 40K is a pretty amazing concept. I haven't played in years. Anyone have the scoop on the most recent rules edition?
  8. Look, I play this game to be a hero. I ENJOY hovering up to a massive group of bad guys and unleashing with my assault rifle and actually being able to cutall of them down, bosses included, with a little tricky moving and shooting.

It's fun. Blasters are not invulnerable even as incarnates.

Can't speak for scrappers. Will let you know in a month.

I will say that being able to crush legions of foes is a well earned reward after 50 levels of play. HK-Alpha made level 50 several years ago. It used to be that once you hit that point, you got bored with the character.

Not any more. I play HK-Alpha more than any other character and I really enjoy it.

Also, I have not heard anyone mention Ogre since I was in high school twenty years ago. Nice.

Nice. I suppose I can drop 1 slot out of conserve power as I expend 1.43 end/sec but gain 3.43/sec. And I have Dark Consumption. I suppose I can gain a second slot by dropping to 2 heal IOs in True Grit from three.
  10. So this is character is about to be built. Many of the sets are in place and the character is level 47. I am currently saving up influence for the purples.

Great on Endurance (gain 2/sec with all toggles on... and have conserve power)... maybe even too much endurance?
Inherent +30% bonus to damage before Soul Drain
142% recharge with hasten up (only down for 20 seconds)

Only hole is Psionic. Resistances are a tad low, but seemed like a better bet to boost max hit points with true grit.

Great suggestions from all. Thanks. I am updating the front page with the following:

Is this not showing in game? That looks like a default 3.75% buff no matter what.
Well, hell, I was going off of mids... and even there failed to note that it says it DOES exactly what you say. Apologies all around. That is fantastic news.
  12. Here is a soft cap version, all positions. Again, I think Phalanx Fighting requires at least 1 teammate and I don't want to have to rely on that.

First I have to ask, do you plan on doing Incarnate powers? If so which Alpha?
Well, damage, naturally. This is a scrapper and I like hitting things.

If your phalanx fighting proposal works the way you say it does, then problem solved. If it requires at least 1 teammate to provide any bonus... problems. EDIT: DOODER, it requires at least 1 ally. That is not an inherent softcap.

It looks like even with just the T1 Spiritual Alpha you would be able to run the top chain.
Yeah, I have to throw out the odd Shadow Maul to make up the difference.

Doesn't phalanx fighting only work if I have at least one ally nearby? If so, then I don't want to rely on it. If not... well then hell, that is AWESOME. If it supplies a BASE of 3.75% defense all of the time and then a bonus on top for 1 teamate that is huge. EDIT: Looks like it doesn't work that way.

Did it for the defense. If phalanx fighting works the way you imply it does, then I absolutely agree with you. As for true grit... resistance slotting I assume? How do yo uslot tough? Aegis for the Psionic IO?

    Good thought. I agree.

Man. I figured the thing is being fired off every 5 seconds or so if I need it to for a 10% heal. I'm willing to concede the point and add a 6th slot for healing. Really like the 5-slot crushing impact, though. It does beastly damage

Never had a problem with Active Defense the way it is.

Thanks for the help. Thoughts on my responses? Really really want to verify that if I am out soloing with no teammates I still get the +3.75% bonus to phalanx fighting. EDIT: looks like it needs at least 1 ally. That is not going to work if I want a real softcap

I opted against full sets of Red Fortune to save slots in those powers you have them in. 3 LotG is enough to get it nearly ED capped for defense enhancement, and it lets me move those slots elsewhere. Those LotGs are also the only source of recharge bonuses I have.

I took Confront at 49 for a couple reasons:

    1) It needs no slots.

    2) It lets me tank things like the autohit nictus in the ITF if our tank is defense based and Regent Korol on the STF if our tank is Invuln.

Is it necessary? No. Does it come in handy at times? Definitely. And there wasn't really anything else I wanted there.
I like your point about red fortune. I need to think about that. The fun of it is the extra recharge (+5% which makes up for the ultra expensive LOTG, no?) coupled with a ranged defense bonus.

EDIT: dumped one red fortune set and replaced with LOTG and then slotted up Dark Regen. Lost 2.5% ranged defense but a bunch gained accuracy, hit points and regen. Also, Dark Regen is now much more effective. I like it. Maybe you have a point here. Let's see what else I can do...

I feel like one should either take slice OR whirling sword but not both. Thoughts?

I think I will respectfully decline to take confront. I can think of better options.
  15. Here is the build I am currently working on. I expect it to be done soon. Is there a way to improve it? I think this may be the toughest character I have ever built in Mids and am very much looking forward to seeing him in action. I have the character at level 47 presently and already have some of the sets slotted.

There are so many great synergies between Dark Melee and Shield Defense. Defense+Self Heal. Soul Drain+Shield Charge. One with the Shield+Dark Consumption. Defense+Acc debuff.

EDIT: UPDATED. Thanks for the suggestions. Now I just need a few billion. Just pased the 1 billion influence mark last week. I think I'll need 4 billion more. Between the IOs I already have and merits, I can make up the rest.

    Key stats:
Regen bonus maxed (well, almost... at 289%)
    Defense: All positions softcapped
    Max HP 132%
Great on endurance (gain 2/sec with all toggles on... and have conserve power)... maybe even too much endurance?
Inherent +30% bonus to damage before Soul Drain
142% recharge with hasten up (only down for 20 seconds)

Only hole is Psionic. Resistances are a tad low, but seemed like a better bet to boost max hit points with true grit.
Nice eh? After this guy is rigged out I'll post some notes on performance.

    Any feedback on the build?

  16. Dooders! I have been looking for a way to resurrect my old BS/DA build. Thanks for the ideas. I took the Claws and Effect build (thanks!) and have tried to improve upon it. I would very much appreciate the collective wisdom of the board.

    Advantages:

    1. Cloak of Fear is SWEET. First, it is awesome to jump into a group and have them cower in fear. Love it. You actually feel like Dark Justice incarnate. More importantly, it makes up for the anemic melee defense pre-parry application.

    2. Head Splitter needs to be all about damage. Rawr. Half the reason to play BS is to put up the ridiculous orange damage numbers.

    3. Slotting Stamina and Physical perfection the way I did is an improvement. More End results.

    4. Slice seems superfluous. Between Hack, Disembowel and Headsplitter we have great damage. Parry completes the chain. Between Whirling sword and Death Shroud we have AOE. I'd rather shift those slots you have in slice elsewhere.

    5) Red Fortune, as a set, is the a great way to get your ranged defense up.

    6) Confront is unecessary

    My concerns:

    1) Dark Regen is underslotted and that makes me sad.

    2) With 2 end/sec spent and only 3.2 gained I concede a rather serious endurance problem with the build... which is a killer. A way to increase recharge speed on Conserve Power would be handy

    3) I only have 190% accuracy for my attacks. AND that is including a +20% from the cloak of fear proc. Otherwise, much lower. A real problem. Would be great to take tactics and slot it up with Gaussians. Worried there is simply not enough endurance for that, though.

    Thoughts?

    Key Stats:

    44% ranged defense
    34% AOE defense (problem?)
    26% melee defense
    190% regen
    37.5% recharge (without hasten up)
190% accuracy for all attacks (problem?)

    AR/Energy Build

Hi! My primary character and favorite build is AR/Energy. Cliff notes response:

    1) Stealth is unecessary as the defense bonus does not work in combat (or, at least it didn't use to) and you can get the stealth benefit through a celerity stealth IO in sprint

    2) Burst is a poor idea. With the right build you will never need it. Slug is good enough.

    3) Your goal is to focus on ranged AOE. Ignite, while amusing, is simply not the play style you want. What you want is to move around the battlefield constantly setting up your next cone attack. The below build has perma boost range, so use it! I have been successfully using this strategy and it is fun, deadly and leaves no room for ignite.

    4) You want to try to cap ranged defense as you need to be able to survive the initial return fire. Few mobs should get close enough to you for melee. Remember that you can fly and that they will be dead between all of your AOE

    5) The leadership and fighting pools are your friend

    6) The best blaster epic pool (in my opinion) is Ice. You get 2 heals and an armor. Snow storm is amusing as well

    7) GROUP FLY! Why? Because with 2 IOs you can get another bump in Ranged defense.

    8) I used to have LRM way way way back in the day, in another life. Man, it looks very cool. I concede that. Properly slotted and with boost range, it is highly highly amusing. Problem is, with this playstyle you'll never need it or use it. Between the celerity stealth IO, fly, and the ridiculous ranged and smashing/lethal defenses, you can rely exclusively on full auto, flame thrower and buckshot with a little grenade launcher when necessary. Also the LRM recharge time is very slow/.

HK-Alpha, my main, is due for a respec himself. I am electing to drop beanbag (which I will miss). I lose the ability to stun bosses. On th eother hand, I have found myself not doing that very often. I tend to try to kill them instead. That said, the result is pretty great. I concede that the +3% defense gladiator IO is rather pricey... I will not be buying it myself for a good while longer. Everything else is doable.

    Key stats:
    43% ranged defense
    40% smashing/lethal defense
(these 2 cover quite a bit)
    60% recharge
    218% Regen
All powers @ at least 240% accuracy
Conserve energy is down for 2.5 minutes and up for 1.5 minutes

Only weakness is in prolonged fire fights endurance gets tough.

When you add in Incarnate powers things get hilarious. With musculature (dude, we bring the SHOOTY... embrace it), barrier and the Ice Judgement power (MOAR CONES!) I am a beast of AOE death.

One last point: with my subotimal build I can SOLO the nictus crystal mobs on the ITF. I clear entire sections of the tunnels by myself while the rest of the team does its thing. And that is with much worse defense (I think my ranged defense is in the mid 30s right now... smashing and lethal is lower).

  18. Well now that looks an awful lot like my AR/EM build (HK-Alpha)

I have just come back to the game and am currently working on the Incarnate powers. The big problem with blasters is getting zapped after you bring the shooty. IOs can make your shooty accurate and damaging. They can take care of recharge too. So I figure your remaining powers need to focus on defense.

    My initial thoughts are:

    1) Alpha: With the right IO sets, neither recharge nor endurance is much of a problem. You have conserve power, after all. I can keep boost range up almost continuously and am full autoing twice or so per group. I only run out of power when I get sapped.

    I am continuously running:
    ice armor
    accuracy (leadership)
    manuevers (leadership)
    combat jumping
    hover

But again, can bring the shooty continuously with no issues.

I therefore went with Musculature (+Damage). More damage is always better, right? And fun. And it's your job. I was already at 97% damage bonus from enhancers. Musculature (the first tier: +33%) boosted it up to 103% or so. I bet when maxed out I can get up to 110%.

I saw nothing else there that made sense except for recharge. A good case could be made for recharge but I have not run the numbers (deleted mids years ago... need to reload it).

I am a blaster and I therefore belong to the church of "moar shooty is moar good". Hence damage.

    2) Interface: My feeling on this was that AOE blasters (e.g., AR) need to avoid getting hit when they unload. My build has a fairly decent defense for a blaster (manuevers, ice armor, etc). I therefore thought the chance of a to-hit debuff was the way to go. -5% to hit is awesome, especially with multiple area effect weapons.

Does anyone know if it stacks? I assume it does, if so: sweet.

    3) Destiny: the defense boosting one. Forget what it is. I assume these affect the player activing it as well and not just allies?
  19. I'd like to join up:

    MUAHHAHAHA! F'ing AWESOME. Pure genius.
  21. LOL. About time they did something like this. This may be the most important change to COH ever. Genius. I always wanted my characters to operate in the grey zone. I mean, I am shooting villains with a machine gun... not exactly "nice".

And if dual pistols are in... wow.
  22. Centurion_A

    Unique build?

I have NEVER seen an Ice/Psi.

And the combo looks like it could work well... the huge -rech you could stack on baddies would be impressive. Also, /psi's aoe could make up for Ice's lack of aoe.

Also, both damage types are among the least resisted in the game.

I have a lvl 2 ice/psi blaster... some day I start developing him.
  23. Heh. So I got into screwing around with mids and came up with an even MORE sneaky plan for HK's build:

Drop the Force epic and take Cold Epic. This provides Snow Storm, the toggle equivilent of Shiver.

It also provides ICE Armor.... which allows me to boost smashing/lethal defense to 30%. All melee is smashing/lethal. Nice, eh? On top of that, I still have an "oh [censored]" button with Hibernate.
