New build: Katana/FA

Hello.

Having almost completed a DM/Shield scrapper (which is the sweetness) and a AR/Energy blaster (I brings the shooty), it is time to select a new build.

I have hit upon Katan/FA: it should have amazing damage output, good survivability and will, of course, look awesome. DM/Shield spoiled me: I had outstanding AOE, single target and survivability in one package. I am hoping Katana/FA can match it.

As any good hero would, I researched the concept on these boards for a bit. After playing with Mids, it seems to me I can do it. Attached is my proposed build.

The defense scores look anemic at first glance, however I can almost soft cap melee with one Divine Avalanche. I also took Shadow Meld and got the reharge below 30 seconds. Shadow Meld as slotted takes all defenses to 50% for 15 seconds.

Between those two and a healing flames I can use every 13 seconds (for half of my health bar), I should do fine, I think.

As for AOE: Burn, Blazing Aura and Lotus Drop should cut down groups pretty quickly especially when coupled with both build-up and fiery embrace.

Also, putting an achilles -res proc in Gambler's Cut is just hilarious for big bosses.

A reality check/optimization commentary from the board would be much appreciated. In particular:
1) Is the build survivable? Can I run around with Shadow Meld up half of the time and expect to be nigh on immortal?
2) I the accuracy good enough? Running at about 180% vs. even cons. Seems low to me.

Links don't work for me, and trying to import from the long export just never works right, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Based on your comments, though, I think I have a pretty good idea what it would look like. I suspect it will have sufficient survivability for most things. It's probably no survival-monster, but you said "good survivability", and that it should have.

It sounds like you have very high recharge, which is something I'd be shooting for damage-wise. For those cases where Divine Avalanche isn't required, you want to be able to run Golden Dragonfly -> Gambler's Cut -> Soaring Dragon -> Gambler's cut. Combine that with rapidly-recharging Build Up and Fiery Embrace, and yeah, it should do some good DPS. Not so much if you have to spam Gambler's Cut (or Shadow Meld) to stay alive, though. I think AoE will be decent if you have high recharge to spam Burn and The Lotus Drops while Blazing Aura chips away.

I suspect 180% is fine. My goal is 95% or higher to hit +4s. To check that, options -> configuration -> exemping & base values -> set base ToHit to 39. These days, you might settle for 95% to hit +3s. Put 48 in that slot instead for that.

My planned i21 project is a Kat/FA Brute.

For Comparison: Here's a the Kat/FA (Brute) I'm planning on building in i21. This is the base non-purple low recharge version that I'll build up with additional oblits, purples, and whatever other changes playing it reveals are needed. I chose Brute and i21 for the Taunt effect in BA. I plan on putting a PvP +def in it.

I plan on Spiritual T4 to help the recharge.

I've not worked out exactly which version I'm gonna run, Options include but are not limited to:

  • Oblits vs Purples Vs Multis
  • Vengeance vs Shadowmeld or Both
  • Balancing Endurance vs Recharge vs Defense.
I'll have to get it built and play it as well as run some spreadsheets to see what will work out as the best compromise for me of endurance vs recharge vs defense.

Any comments or comparisons welcome.

My suggestion, similar to the poster above, is skip the scrapper and make a Kat/Fire brute with freedom. I have a 50 Kat/Fire mostly IO'd out and it's pretty useless. Unless, that is, you like watching mobs running all over the map.
