If you had told me a year ago that we would be getting a new powerset every month, I would have laughed at you. Given our past history of new sets, that would have simply seemed absurd.
But here we are, and the Freedom feels fine!
Sept: Time Manipulation
Oct: Beam Rifle
Nov: Street Justice
Dec: Titan Weapons
Jan: Staff Fighting
Feb: Darkness Control
Mar+: ???
Thank you devs, you're doing a great job!

Quote:I wish I was wrong. I think there's a lot more story opportunities to be had by keeping these stereotypes separate.

But both TV Tropes (Western Character: Soiled Dove leads only to ****** With a Heart of Gold and Miss Kitty) and Wikipedia (under 'Entertainment') support my proposition.
If you know of better barometers of incorrect but ubiquitous modern perceptions than TV Tropes and Wikipedia, please point them out to me. I love reading about the uncountable ways the human mind divorces itself from facts.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Arcanaville believes we are "merely" looking at a City of Heroes Fan Service Pack which is giving us more Fan Service With A Smile.
I think, that for whatever reason, the Wild West has been exempted from those tropes.
Maybe the similiarity between Dance Hall / Saloon Girls and modern bar girls is just too much to overcome.
Maybe, for once, the general public is actually willing to entertain a darker truth instead of winking at it.
It's hard to say. But the undeniable public opinion is that saloon girls were whores.
And lastly, even if you want to stick your head in the sand and go for the Dude's "Well, that's just your opinion, Man", my opinion is based on the several years I spent working criminal defense in Baltimore.
I know a prostitute when I see one. -
I wholeheartedly endorse the idea of silly costume pieces.
Sooooo many possible uses, from Deadpool to Howard the Duck, Captain Carrot to the Inferior Five.
Lots of great ideas so far, so I'll just add a couple right now.

Quote:Was I somehow unclear?Google Images more or less agrees with you. The fact that so many people make automatically make the leap from bar maid to prostitute really bothers me to be honest. Although the entire Old West costume era is more or less a a fantasy in itself, much like many popular ideas about the Medieval era.
Anyway, I certainly hope no one is trying to say Paragon Studios deliberately built an Old West prostitute costume into the game. Because that's what it's starting to sound like and that is time-for-medications ridiculous.
Yes, I am saying that Paragon Studios deliberately built an Old West prostitute costume into the game, and is selling it under the Gunslinger misnomer.
It's hardly exceptional. It just adds to the 7+ years of sexual fetish gear rebranded as female costumes that the game already contains. You can debate about whether the costumes are demeaning or not, but denying their sexual nature is ludicrous.
All I'm asking for is a little honesty in the debate.
Sex Sells.
Scroll back up to that picture Alpha posted at the top of this thread.
The female costume depicted there is framing the model's primary and secondary sexual characteristics and literally wrapping them up in a bow. Do we need to talk about the purpose of the blush built into the face?
Paragon Studios is in the (admittedly T-for-Teen rated) sex business. They have been from Day One. Full stop, end-of-sentence, there is no room for debate here. Even the lightest stroll through the costume generator proves what I'm saying.
I'm just amazed it took this long for a thread like this to call them out on it. I blame the Gunslinger lie, myself.
It's apparently OK to sell sex in an upfront manner. But if you lie to people and tell them you're selling violence, and they instead find out you're selling them sex, they get upset.
---
As for bar maids, saloon girls and prostitutes; I know that historically they were different. One of the pages I linked to above goes into detail on the point.
But CoX isn't selling us the Historical West. It's selling us the Wild West. The Wild West is a shared fantasy that is a wildly filtered perception of the facts of the times. And in that perception, bar maids, saloon girls and prostitutes are all the same woman.
I'm sorry if this offends any present-day bar maids. But a google image search of the term 'bar maid' tells me that the bars are using sex to sell their goods a lot more vigorously than Paragon Studios. -
Quote:Really?I have lost count of the number of people who have used the word "prostitute" and "stripper" to describe these pieces. I don't consider that polite discussion for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is a person claiming to be pro-female while simultaneously using that terminology for a girl in a skirt cut too low for their tastes.
Would you prefer the term Soiled Dove?
Or perhaps Painted Lady?
Personally, I don't care who's doing the art. I have confidence that Paragon hires competent and creative people.
But if the costume artist doesn't want his or her art to be compared to prostitutes, he or she shouldn't make costumes that exactly mimic the clothing of prostitutes.
This isn't an issue of one player's taste in hemlines. The art team went for a very specific look here and successfully nailed it (no pun intended): wild west prostitute. -
Some time in early October something in the game changed so that the patch download process continuously runs afoul of my antivirus software and fails.
Customer Service's response? "Turn your antivirus protection off."
o.O
So yeah, I won't be on Beta any more. I'm willing to risk an hour or so for small updates but I'm not turning my AV protection off for a day to download the whole Beta client.
Good luck, testers. You have my sympathy cranking through something so busted it's now, what? Three weeks behind schedule and counting? -
Guardian actually. And I know at least one other player who'd gotten the same request from the same bot on a different server.
Do we now need a 'report friend requester as spammer' button? -
Tonight I experienced the next step in RMT evolution.
I hope none of us is foolish or lonely enough to fall for blind global friend requests from a randomly generated account. But just in case...

Hey, it's Tuesday again!
Looks like Super Packs stole all the Too High Thunder.
Still, for Thanksgiving:

Quote:I'm mystified by the amount of support there is for this idea. I know there are players who make characters that know each other, are related to each other, part of some grand internal fanfic, etc., but I didn't know it was that common. The fun for me in character creation is to make up something new and unique. I wouldn't use that temp power any more than any other out there. At the risk of sounding like Sam I Am, would you buy a temp power that summoned one of your alts from the same server to assist you?
But this does remind me of the one consumable I do use- Shivans. About once every two months I'll truck some squishy into Bloody Bay for 15 minutes and pick up some monster killing machines.
Would I buy Shivans from the market? No. Why would I? It only takes 15 minutes work, in a deserted zone that's been altered to make squishies more survivable.
Quote:Would you buy CoH Comics written by Troy Hickman and drawn by David Nakayama?
A permanent comic? You betcha. I'd hop all over that. In my mind, that's sort of what we're getting now with the Sig Story Arcs. -
-
I wish I had something to add to this very-well-meaning thread.
But I don't buy consumables.
I have only spent my Tier 9 Rewards on the permanent costume bits. I'll be saving them up starting next month, until some new permanent reward becomes available.
I haven't used any of the freebie per-character-only items that came tumbling in with all the new vet rewards 2 months ago. Heck, I'd be hard pressed to tell you what most of them do.
On my two badge characters, I have run out of space to put powers in all 9 trays because I've gotten so many temp powers stacked up, sitting there unused.
I have to remind myself to use inspirations when I sit down to play. And honestly, I *only* use them because of the speed with which they drop.
In short, there is no consumable the game could market that I would buy.
Some men just want to watch the world burn? That's not me.
I subscribe to the Ramkin Family Motto: "What We Have, We Keep". -
In my case, it's kindergarten reflexes; I teach 5 and 6 year olds so I need to be aware of my language all day.

Quote:I'm in much the same boat. I know they made a movie back in the 90s and that it led to nothing. I've never seen it.I would not consider myself the most fanatical fan of Doctor Who but I've watched various incarnations of the show for the better part of 30 years now. Even accounting for that amount of "familiarity" with the franchise I never knew they already tried a theatrical movie at some point. *shrugs*
And yeah, the 'We want to capture the magic of the TV show but we're going to have to change it completely to make a movie' comments shoot up giant red waving flags on top of fireworks. I will expect nothing of entertainment value from this until it solidifies a lot more. -
I figure if we just sticky this thread, it'll save people a lot of time every Tuesday.
Feel free to fill in your (X)! -
Quote:You heard it here first! New CoT is getting retrofitted back into CoT Classic!Just wait 'til you see the cloth folds on a certain upcoming set--it's simply jaw-dropping what the Character team was able to do.

Oh look, the magic people are mad at me. Tsk.
BADA-BADA-BADA-BADA-BOOOOOOMMMMM!!!

And more importantly, why do I have to ask here?!
Why isn't this info actually, you know, in the game?
A simple MotD would do the trick.
C'mon, devs. This is stupid easy. Your pay-to-play, much-hyped, carrots-to-join-VIP story arcs have to be immediately accessible. -
Quote:So glad this was posted as well. What has been making the Doctor so brilliant these past several years has been the fact that it's obviously a labor of love by everyone involved. These two vids sum up that love perfectly.

Quote:Most of what you've mentioned was I21, and we're two months past that. Given the timetable the devs have adopted in the past year or two, we should be seeing I21.5 pretty soon now.Well, with First Ward, the Atlas Park revamp, the Mercy Island revamp, the ongoing training arcs from Twinshot and Dr. Graves, the Circle of Thorns revamp, Street Justice, Time Manipulation, Beam Rifle, the SSAs, the Death From Below sewer Trial, the Dr. Kane's Haunted Mansion Halloween Trial, the Halloween costume pack, the Circle of Thorns costume pack all coming out in the past 7 weeks, plus Titan Weapons and 2 new Incanrate Trials on the Beta server seems to suggest that they're at least doing something at the office.
Two new trials and a new powerset seems like plenty to me for an issue update. You don't need to pad that with stuff they were working on last summer. That kind of arguing just cements your reputation further. -
I find this week's market item to be an interesting experiment. It's not something I'm interested in getting, but I like the direction the devs are going here. It shows we'll be getting a fairly diverse array of stuff in the market for which we can trade points. A little outside-the-box thinking is always good.
As for pricing, that gets the standard response. Is there something else in the market I'd rather spend that amount of points on? If yes, this item falls somewhere into the spectrum of want <-----> don't want and gets looked at again later. If no, then *bang*, I'll trade in those points as soon as I've got enough available.
Right now, powersets sit at the top of that queue for a lot of folks. But the right item can push them back. (The Halloween Costume Pack did it for me.) I definitely approve of the devs thinking creatively whilst looking to create must-have items.
