Quote:For those of you who are puzzled by this, I should explain that Frosti is grinding his axe here because of a thread in PQ wherein he took the stance that finding a team should require no effort whatever, and that since it does that's prima facie evidence that The Game Is Dying. If you came in late, I should further assure you that this is bosh of a high order.I've been told people like playing on empty servers and your are wrong to expect otherwise in an MMO.
Personally I hope you get to join us soon, but make sure you don't join any of the empty servers here, the people playing on them like them just as they are. If they ran into you at the trainer it might drive them over the edge. -
That's as may be, and I expect it's true - but I also expect a lot of those German gamers would still have been annoyed if they'd been presented with an actual German release of a game that required reading and writing English. Or, at least, I bet that's what the thought process at NCsoft was when they decided to have German-language servers.

Technology characters are especially easy in this regard, because you can always apply car-manufacturer-style code numbers, which look cool and are pretty much infinite. "Prototype" is probably taken, for instance, but I bet "Prototype M590" isn't; and if it is, well, there's always "Prototype M591". And so on.
I freely admit that's kind of a lazy way out, but it beats being "xXxWolverinexXx" and then getting genericked anyway. -
Quote:Seriously, that's not so much breaking the fourth wall as just disregarding it altogether. Why bother building a fantasy world in which people can play characters who are not themselves when you're just going to throw the underlying reality in their faces all the time by tying those characters' identities to the player's?Let me just say I *hated* that in CO with a passion. HATED. One of many things that verified, for me, I'd never go past a trial with it.
"Oh hi! Incredibleman, remember me? We teamed up a while back." "Oh, no, sorry, you must be thinking of Bob Jones's Incredibleman. I'm Dave Smith's Incredibleman."
There are plenty of ways in which the underlying mechanics of the game intrude on the fantasy as it is. We certainly wouldn't benefit from such a blatant abandonment of what's left of the illusion. -
This'd be a helluva lot of work, but it'd certainly add a lot of complexity and variety to what is now the pretty staid and structured world of melee. I'd dig it.

Quote:Do I need to draw the flowchart here?Everybody hates being held or knocked back(...) I think it would be fun to change status protections to resistances and percentage chances of avoiding status effects. That way, even tanks can get knocked around every once in a while, or held for a second or two.

Quote:You seem to be taking the view here that "casual" is equivalent to "all but unintentional" - as if expecting someone to go to any trouble at all to form a team, rather than just having one magically fall together, is somehow going beyond the pale. I find this bemusing, not to say completely baffling. Nobody's saying you need a Ph.D. in social dynamics and a nationwide polling organization to get a team. So it's not quite as easy as turning on a faucet. Oooh. Someone call Geraldo.By definition the second I have to join a non-default communication channel to participate in default activities something is out of line.
-Suggesting that someone learn what the extra community channels are and then join them, or actively send tells hoping to get invited is straying pretty far from casual. -

Quote:I get it from complete strangers on the street sometimes, which always strikes me as weird. I mean, I could understand if they were relying on me in a team setting or something, but while I'm standing around talking to a contact? Even inside an MMO, apparently, there are a wide range of relative degrees of people needing to get a life.I have never, ever had my build critiqued for anything short of completely aberrant power choices, like on my Power Pool Guy. Most people, as long as you're playing even decently well, don't care if you have 21.5% or 15% Resistance to something.

I think the designers pretty much abandoned refining the function of the arena after the PvP zones went live. There is, I believe, no actual way to have a properly private fight in the PvP zones, but it seems most people prefer to try their luck over there anyway, rather than futz with the arena controls.
Me, I have a well-documented complete lack of interest in fighting other player characters, so that and two bucks will get you a cheese danish, but I believe that's where the matter stands at the moment. I've got nothing against the arena controls being streamlined for those that want to partake, but with the overall focus of PvP having moved to the non-instanced zones, I don't think I'd stand on the corner waiting for that particular bus for too long if I were you. -
I'm not sure why the UK got separate servers in the first place. It's not like the game is set in London on those servers or something, it's still in Rhode Island. Time-of-day considerations? Some arcane legal concern? I mean, I can see giving Germany and France their own servers, simply because of the language barrier, but halfhearted cultural rivalry jokes aside, it's not as if people from the US and UK can't understand each other. Except possibly for Glaswegians and people from Georgia.

Even though she's not actually here any more, I didn't think it was right that CuppaJo had no rep, so I fixed it.
Those of you who haven't been here for a few years probably don't get that, but that's okay. Those who have: Why didn't somebody get to that before me? Slackers! -

Nonsense! Why, just yesterday I was able to get Robot Double. On Virtue, no less. If a name so connected to the mainline of the super-hero tropeome* is available on the Unofficial RP Server, there can be no naming crisis.
*a word I have just now this very moment coined: the full set of tropes expressed by a genre, body, or work of fiction, by analogy with biology terms such as "genome" and "proteome" -

I'm okay with #2 if and only if turning in that second (and third and so on) set of salvage doesn't trigger a zombie invasion. I have had it up to here with the friggin' zombie invasions.

Quote:Okay, we get it. You've never liked the game, and you have a colossal, barely-contained disdain for anybody who does. Are you sticking around just to feel superior in some way to the poor, deluded fools you see all around you who are managing to have a great time despite what a terrible, boring game it is? Your whole game experience as you relate it in these posts puts me in mind of those beret-wearing, Clove-smoking kids in college who claimed that they were only there because of their parents' outdated petit-bourgeois somethingorothers, and that they pitied those of us who were happy.I've pretty much always hated the "real game" as some purists would like to call it. The regular contact missions in this game are tedious and awful. I was running TFs the moment they were available, and I could never understand the people whining about how they were too long and boring. To me they were finally something halfway fun in the game.
When they introduced radio missions I was overjoyed because the "real content" that so many people seem to gush over is so damn idiotic to me. -
