Quote:Sell them? God no!
Very cool results you have there... are you planning to give em out as prizes or sell them? Or do you have
8 cars and happen to need a keyring for each?
I saw the aftermath of the wrath of the heavens that descended on Mother's Love when they almost looked like selling stuff with a vague CoH connection, even though all monies raised were to go to DTWT (as far as I recall it, my memory's a little hazy on the whole subject as I only saw some of the fallout on the EU boards.)
Did 'em for the hell of it, and a couple as presents.
I also did a small etched Butterfly piece, but I've already given that to my mother on a copper wire stand. If anyone's interested, I suppose I could try and get a photo of that, too.
Quote:That looks a lot more time consuming than glass etching, that's for sure! But nice results, especially for the first time doing it, hope you find it fun for a while). It's the process more than the end result that I tend to be interested in, I'm a technician more than an artist, I suppose.
Plus, my artistic/design skills are somewhat..... limited.
As to doing more, well I've got some Press n Peel Blue PCB masking film on the way, and I'm going to give it another try when that gets here, see if I can get a cleaner mask out of it, and if that works well on a test piece, then I may redo the pieces I'm not too happy with. Plus, I've got some other things I want to try with this, once I get back to work and can 'borrow' some reagents from the Stock cupboard, then etched aluminium should be pretty straightforward, but that would rely on me getting hold of some 2mm Al sheet, and finances are running tight.
I've still got a fair chunk of brass sheet left, so there's room for me to do more.
As I said, I'm not doing these to sell, but I suppose if someone REALLY wanted one, then I could be open to trade of some sort, once I get the process fully sussed out.
Thanks for the positive comments though -
Warning, wall of text approaching. Scroll down for pretty pictures if you're impatient.
I work in a school, so I get this dirty great lump of holiday from late July to the end of August.
I tend to pick something I feel like giving a try during this holiday, rather than just playing CoH. I've knitted chainmail, modded Xboxes, whatever catches my fancy.
This year, I decided to give brass etching a shot. Why? Not a clue. It just looked interesting enough to keep me entertained. Well, that and I wanted to make a late wedding present for a friend who got married in Las Vegas, of all places... (the present will not appear in this post)
While I was doing research and thinking on designs, I decided to try some smaller pieces than the oversized lump of brass that was being made as a present (a desk nameplate, the recipient's a doctor}
Bear with me, this does eventually have some relation to CoH.
So, I decided to make a couple of keyrings.
This led to trying to figure out designs. Which led to CoH AT symbols. Which leads to a headache. To do etching on brass the way I did it requires a monochrome Black/White design.
I eventually got my sweaty little mitts on some AT symbols, by drawing them in Inkscape. And yes, it took a while. I started with Scrapper, Defender and Stalker, as they were pretty straightforward.
While I was on, I drew up a Crane and Lion Clan Mon from L5R, the Crane mon initially as part of the aforementioned present, since the recipient is a Crane fan, and the Lion mon because I could use the same paint I was planning on using on the Scrapper keyring. And for good measure because I'm a manga nut, I drew up the glyph from Kurosaki Ichigo's Temporary Soul Reaper badge in Bleach. (don't worry if that sentence made no sense, just let it wash over you)
Once I had the designs, I just had to transfer them to the brass to use as a mask. This process hurts your brain. You have to remember that black on the design will be left as raised brass, and White will eventually be etched into the metal and filled with whatever colour paint you use. You also need to mirror the designs horizontally.
The horizontal mirror is because to get the designs onto the brass as a mask, you print them out then iron them onto the metal. (look up etching brass on Instructables for more details)
OK, this is getting long enough as it is. In fact I just chopped out about another 15 paragraphs of 'how to do it'. If you want to know more, then look it up. Instructables and Google should tell you anything you need to know.
This is NOT a quick process, merely filing the keyrings to shape took me an hour for EACH keyring. The paint needs to dry at least overnight, if not longer. The Lacquer again needs to dry fully etc. etc.
So the keyrings got filed to shape, painted, lapped, drilled, clearcoated and I fitted some soldered copper split rings. (that one sentence took about a week and a half to actually do...)
Oh, and please bear in mind that the keyrings may look bloody huge in the pics, but they're about 27mm across in reality. Also, almost all work was done with hand tools - Hacksaw, 8" second cut metal file, Needle files, Wet/Dry paper. A drill press was used to pierce the holes.
The pitting due to the problems with the mask is most noticeable on the Defender, Scrapper and Stalker closeups, but I quite like the effect on the Bleach Glyphs. I'm REALLY pleased with how the Crane and Lion Mons came out though, especially since I basically had to hand draw the mask for those due to difficulties getting the design to transfer properly.
Time for the pretty pictures! (but apologies for relatively crappy photography)
All 8 Keyrings:
Scrapper:
Defender:
Stalker:
Crane mon:
Lion mon:

Quote:I seem to recall from the dim and distant past, that Bombing runs during Rikti invasions (and a UXB that gets a little too healthy while you're stood next to it) are unresistable KB, and it doesn't matter how much -KB you've got, you'll get sent flying.I believe BAB's KO Blow exceeds 12, as do the UXBs during Rikti raids (or the exploding grates on the mothership)
I'm playing an endurance monster of a Dark/Stone tanker atm, and while I bought 3 Steadfast -KB recipes, I've only used 2 so far, and frankly I've not been knocked up, down or sideways since. I'm keeping the 3rd one for later, since as other people have mentioned, later in the game, there's some higher grade KB to deal with. -
Quote:Sprint gives a +jump height buff, and IIRC, it's possible to clear a train with practice and just sprint.Sounds fair enough to me. I am curious if you can jump a train unpowered though. Anyone tried and succeed that?
If I hadn't just logged out of the game, I'd check to see for certain.
You do need to get the timing right, though. -
Quote:I'd assume that it's to stop less than observant US players posting threads in the EU server boards saying "ZOMG were is teh Uonin servar on teh servar list?!?!? I cant se it" and vice versa, to prevent less than observant EU players posting in the Virtue boards (for example) with "ZOMG how do i get Virute on mi list!?!?"Ok, so, we've been told it's a merge not a move, why then is this "Union (EU)" while the American servers just have their names?
hmm o_O
don't really care it's just the being lied to that isn't nice
And no, I don't hold a very high opinion of the literacy or intelligence levels of certain sections of the game population.
But hey, I'm an equal opportunity misanthrope... -
Two points.
1) Under Dark Melee, you list Soul Drain as Soul Transfer.
2) Under Dark Armour, you list Soul Transfer as a Mag 11 stun. It's not. It's a Mag 30 stun for 11 seconds. Oh, and so far as I can tell in my limited use of the power so far, it's autohit (in PvE, at least) too -

Beaten to the punch by a Canine who only alt-tabbed out of the game to glimpse at the boards while zoning, and has to log in 4 or 5 times before the boards believe that I'm really me, no less...
But you can keep the card. It smells of catnip. -

Quote:Well, welcome to the asylum Mr. Skeleton, but I think the more important point that's been revealed is that Paragon Studios have a cannon...Now, we mentioned that he really was a villain, but his tyrannical inclinations have not earned him a place in the City of Heroes cannon
If they tell you that you've earned a place in the Cannon, then just smile, nod politely and leave through the nearest opening in the building (Window, Door, Ventilation duct).
Also, what/whom is said cannon aimed at? Inquiring minds wish to know. -
I take Travel Powers when I can fit them in.
Nowadays, this varies between level 26 and level 49 (my personal record, and not one I'm going to be beating).
Sprint, The GvE Jump Pack and the Safeguard/Mayhem temps will get you anywhere you need to be in the game - when combined with knowing your way around.
It all depends on how much patience you've got for getting around. Myself, I like travelling - whether it's trying to bounce off implausibly small stepping stones when getting from train station to mission without touching the 'ground', slaloming in and out of support columns on fliers or just legging it round the city implausibly fast with Superspeed.
Then again, I've got friends who WILL get a travel power at 14, come hell or high water. But I find that Travel power at 14, combined with Stamina prerequisites by 20 means you have a very dull 1-20 game with no new shiny powers to play with. Maybe this is why people keep trying to blitz through the 1-20 game as fast as they can. -
OK, now THIS jumped right out at me.
Shield Defence toons have far, FAR more customisations options right now than Invuln etc are ever likely to get in Issue 16.
You have a variety of shield shapes and types. Each of which can be coloured, and in several cases, have a variety of symbols placed on them. So you've got shape, colour and design.
Invuln etc are, so far as I can tell from the ComiCon stuff that was posted, likely to get colour changes. That's it.
And you're feeling hard done by with Shield Defence as it is right now?
Oh, and skipping GR on EU because of 'low populations' ? Pfft. I missed out on a Barracuda SF being run by some friends last night because too many people were online and looking to do it, on the first day of CO Open Beta (which admittedly is/was having "issues" apparently). -
Quote:You'll note I specified non-Stamina and no end reduction slotted as the pre-req's for haemorrhaging endurance.Don't let people trick you into thinking that Stamina is mandatory for anything. Save that job for yourself.
I've got Teleport on my non-stamina Robotics/Traps/Paranoid Moron^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^HMace MM, and he can get around just fine. It did, however require fairly heavy slotting.
As has been mentioned elsewhere, if you're not fighting lag from a sub-par PC, then just pause a second after each hop and you'll mitigate the end cost by allowing more time for recovery.
I also favour the 'Up, along, down' method for teleporting, too. First hop is straight up, or at about a 50-80 degree angle in the direction of travel. Once you've got some altitude, then to a large extent you're safe from appearing in the midst of a large spawn of annoyed mobs. Then, once within about 300 yards of the destination, start aiming down toward it. (this may be obvious, then again it may not...) -
Quote:1) - It can be. Without Stamina, and with No end cost slotted, you can haemorrhage blue like nobody's business if you're travelling a long distance.1 - Is it the endurance hog that others have suggested it is?
2 - Do you need to take "Hover" so you dont fall out of the air when teleporting?
3 - Does it need to be 3 or 4 slotted to be effective?
4 - Is it a pain to use?
2) - Nope. Not unless your PC is so old and creaky that you get lag every time you jump. There's a 3 second hover attached to Teleport every time you jump.
3) - Nope. It's a maximum of 300 foot jump unslotted. 17.6 hops to cover a mile. Slotting will help, though.
4) - Not when you set up a bind. /bind ctrl+lbutton "powexec_name Teleport" for example, will set it up so that when you hold down Control and left Click, you teleport to the location you clicked on.
Fine control can be a little tricky with TP, but it's a skill you acquire through use. -
...And after 5 logins, I can actually reply.
Firefox 3.5.2 on both XP Pro (desktop machine) and Eeebuntu Standard 3.0. (on my EeePC 901)
All fully patched, both versions of firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript installed, but turning those addons off makes no difference.
The problems with Firefox seem to be, not exactly 'common', but not unknown, either. I'm not the only one with this issue on Firefox. From what I can tell, it's likely to be a cookie issue, but not being a forum admin/software specialist, pretty much all all I can do is post it in the Official Forum Bugs thread (which I have) and keep mentioning it occasionally in threads that are a) vaguely applicable and b) seem likely to get some dev attention.
<shrug>
It just means I end up treating the new combined boards like the old US boards - a read only resource. -
Frankly, all the issues raised in this thread are entirely secondary to me, since the damn boards ask me 3-8 (my record so far) times in a row to log in, and each time I enter my details (involving two excess mouse clicks for 'europe' and 'remember me'), I get 'welcome, Canine', then bounced back to the same page I left, where I'm not logged in <seethe, fume, naughty words etc.>
So the OP's a step ahead of me on that count, at least.
And since the board seems unable to understand that 'remember me' might actually mean it should remember that I'm logged in, my desire to post and/or actually use these boards has been more than a little curtailed.
And yes, I've been through all the faff on clearing cookies, deleting cookies.sqlite and associated files in my profile directory etc.
<shrug> -
One thing that nobody seems to have touched on yet, is that high defence values do more than just stop your health dropping.
A lot of those red numbers come with a special added bonus, free of charge - debuffs and mezzes.
High defence values can, at a pinch almost substitute for mez protection, or make existing mez protection far more potent.
For example, my Stone/Fire scranker, who uses Granite purely as a panic button, has all bar softcapped Psi defence. He laughs at Master Illusionists - they summon their 4 Illusionary Illusionists, all 5 pop flash and Blind and he's still stood there, almost completely untouched, and absolutely not held. Add in the fact that the Carnie end drain [Psychic Visage] is AoE/Psi typed, and Rooted gives end drain resist, and he's almost immune to that irritation, too.
Hmm, I'm waffling. I'll return to the point, High defence levels are valuable for more than just mitigating damage, they can help mitigate other things too.
I do, however appreciate the running of the numbers, and fully endorse the conclusion that the last 5% defence approaching the softcap gives as much mitigation as the rest.
Nice mini-guide-ette -
Quote:My techique on my current Dark/Stone endurance eating monster of a tanker was:If you're starting a new hero, and you don't want to grind AE, and you don't want to grind newspaper missions, if you actually want some story in your story?
- Level 2-3: Initial contact missions.
- Level 4: Grind street mobs in starter zone.
- Level 5-6: King's Row, 3 newspaper missions and the Atlas Park safeguard. Collect Raptor Pack.
- Level 6-9: The Hollows, 1st and 2nd contacts plus Meg.
- Level 10-12: Steel Canyon: 3 newspaper missions, King's Row safeguard (collect Jump Pack), inventions tutorial, intro to Midnighters.
- Level 12-15: The Hollows, 3rd and 4th contacts, plus Meg if needed.
- Level 15+: Faultline.
- After Faultline: Explore as suits you, because you're past the really sucky level 5-20 classic content, and all of your contacts now offer full-fledged story arcs.
- Level 1. Set /hide to 'hide from searches'. Wander through Outbreak with friends Fire/Fire blaster.
- 2-4 - Origin contact, Atlas park.
- 5-9 - Atlas, all contacts, all missions, turn off xp when reaching level 9.99. Fit in Hollows part 1, Atlas Park Safeguard.
- 10-14 - All Origins of contacts, all missions. Turn off XP at level 14.99. Fit in Hollows Part 2, Kings Row Safeguard.
- 15-19 - All origins of contact, all missions. Turn off XP at level 19.99. Faultline Part 1, Skyway Safeguard.
Can you spot the pattern yet?
I've done a lot of the 'old' content, and frankly, I'm enjoying it. I've blasted past sooooo much of the early stuff on pretty much every toon since my first, that I'd forgotten a lot of the arcs and standalone missions.
At level 30 (accidentally, and only by 300ish XP, due to a 'turn off XP' accident) I've got about 90ish hours clocked up, and about 320 Reward merits in the bank. Oh and a handful of temp powers, like the Cryonite Armour and the REAL Sands of Mu, that I vaguely remember getting first time around (and Li, my first toon still has that Cryonite armour).
More importantly, I've enjoyed playing through stories and story arcs that I only barely remembered from 4 and a half years ago (my 54 month badge arrived the day before yesterday). I've also gotten a fairly good handle on playing a Dark/Stone tank in the lower ranges, I think.
However, if anyone else decides to do this, then you may wish to consider a contact 'done' when all they'll offer you is street hunts. Me, I'm a twit, so I've done every contact until they move from the 'Active' tab to the 'Inactive' tab.... -

Quote:I'm not sure it's the address, I think it's something to do with Firefox and interacting oddly with the boards/cookies/something or other.Hrm. Everyone in thread, any other aliases to the boards? I'm thinking a thought, and one of the others might help Canine.
I've cleared all cookies, deleted all stored passwords, refused to let Firefox manage my passwords for me on the boards, disabled Adblock on the boards, told NoScript to let the boards through. Everything obvious that I could think of.
Thanks for any thoughts though. I'll try sensible ideas 'Have you tried turning it off and then back on again?' being a non-sensible thought
I'll just wait it out and hope it eventually gets sorted. I've posted in the Official Forum Bugs' thread, so I'd assume that the issue is known, especially as I'm not the only one to have posted the issues in there.
All thisjust means that any posts I do manage to make will be more irritable that usual...
Oh, and using IE is a non-option, as I access the boards from my EeePC 901, too. Which only has Firefox (running Eeebuntu). Also, I loathe IE, but that's an entirely separate topic. -
Quote:I am, my bookmark's set to http://boards.cityofheroes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=547 (the English Submenu) I've also had it set to plain http://boards.cityofheroes.com/ and that was no different.Don't go to boards.coh.com, go to boards.cityofheroes.com
Had the same trouble, until I figured out the alias doesn't seem to be kicking solidly.
The main source of annoyance is because I can't figure out what's causing the problem, and due to the multiple login attempts, by the time I've logged in to respond to a thread, either the thread's moved on, or I've lost all desire to post to it and instead just want to close down the browser in frustration.... -
-
Yes it's an irritation, but frankly, a minor one compared the the blood boiling fury that is generated by these blasted boards requiring me to log in 2-5 times before it actually accepts it, and then logging me out at a random point thereafter, and refusing to actually remember me, no matter how often I tick the box...
<deep breaths, counts to 10>
As far as the Digests go, I'd assume that someone somewhere is working on them, but it's quite likely a more complex task than pressing the big red button labelled 'Enable Dev Digest'. but I know nothing of board configuration/management, so I'll wait. -
That's why adblock was invented. Firefox only, so far as I know.
Notice a huge great waste of bandwidth avatar? Right click -> Adblock Plus:block Image.
Never have to see it or download it again. Hurrah!
(No, I don't care how impressive, 'humorous' or shiny an avatar is. If it's wasting my bandwidth, I will kill it with flaming hammers.) -
Quote:I changed my bookmarks as soon as these boards came up (to the 'English' submenu)Just make sure your bookmark/favourite is http://boards.cityofheroes.com
..not the old one... The old one seemed to work yday, but the cookie is for the above URL.
I've since changed it to the root boards.cityofheroes.com URL, it hasn't helped.
It just took me 3 attempts to log in to post this. First time, having hit 'quote' I entered my detail is the big boxes in the middle of the screen, checked 'europe' and 'remember', hit 'log in', and then it took me to the 'redirecting' page, which then brought me right back to the same login page. Repeated with the exact same results. Third time, I entered my details into the smaller text boxes in the upper right of the page, ignoring the big boxes, and when the 'redirecting' page came up, I clicked the 'click this if you're not redirected' link, and finally got logged in so I could post this.
Something's playing silly buggers, but I don't know if it's something on my system, my browser, or the boards.
