That, and, there's been scuttlebutt indicating that the issues CoX has with ATi rigs are being reduced/diminished/alleviated. I would like to see ASAP first-hand whether or not that particular rumor is true.
That wasn't quite my point. It's lovely that you can differentiate between server resource issues and rig performance issues, but that would put you in the minority. If people are overly concerned with performance while in beta for UM, can you even begin to imagine the number of "omg im lagging and I have a [x] fix this" threads in the closed forums?

That was, more or less, my point. CB should be used bughunting before it should be used for performance evaluation, that's all.

Edit: Scuttlebutt nothin! They've claimed openly to have addressed several long-standing ATI issues. No more goofy water reflection? Sold ^_^

    Ditto.

IIRC, the game is balanced largely around the performance point of SO's. This wouldn't be a problem, except that the use of IO sets (ranging from the meager to the extreme) seems to have become pervasive (read: No, I'm not saying you, reader, kit out all your toons in IO, so please don't bother with a "well I don't." statement).

For the sake of testing, it would be interesting to have the availability of all sets. It would be much easier to determine whether or not a particular set, or combination of sets, hits the OP mark.

To be fair, the closed beta won't really be the best possible indicator for the performance of your rig in the face of ultra mode. Remember the limited resources of test, and the (likely) large beta tester population - the CB for DP was a little bit ridiculous, even for a solid performance monster.

Look up the specs on your PSU, if you know what it is. Elsewise, you'll have to open the case and check (the information should be listed on the physical unit).

In other words, you posted this crap even though you knew better. Bravo.

So, yes, by all means, let's make their griefing/PvP goading efforts even MORE accessible and rewarding. Let's give them the gradification of having everyone near them watch them fight other players in public! Power to the griefers!

...And that is what makes all the difference. Keeping the duels in the arena keeps PvP separate from PvE. That's not a slight oversight--it's deliberate design, and those of us who don't want to PvP appreciate it.

Remember what I said about how people would implement this in the highest traffic areas, maximizing the annoyance and lag involved? I rest my case.
I concur. Polite responses are a waste of time.

A few extra settings on the advance page. Another setting on the shader option.

Go play the game with all the pretty turned down right now. Does the game play any differently? No. Uglier or older looking? Yes. Ultra mode is all about upping the engine so if you have the horsepower, you can make the game better looking. That's it.

Now for the rest of Issue 17, we really don't know a lot. We know the GR powersets will be available to those who pre-order GR. The Epics unlock at 20 and we'll be getting other "stuff" (AE changes, emotes, QoL fixes, UI changes).

So yes, if you exclude Ultra Mode graphics update and the new powersets from GR, issue 17 does seem to be a bit light in content compared to other issues. But still it's FREE!! (argue among yourselves about "free" upgrades in a subscription based game, I know somebody is going to).
So...wait...I'll still be able to team with people running Ugly Mode?

    Flicker

I would start by checking to see if you're on the most current display driver release.
  12. There is one thing I would like to bring up in all of this, but I think it's important to preface the query with a few details about myself.

I've been around since this silly game was in beta (I got it with my Medal of Honour boxed set ^_^). I've been there, done that, and still keep doing it. Would I like more content? Sure. Do I even bother to compare CoH/V to other MMOs on the market? Nah...apples and oranges. I play this game as an RP'er now - almost exclusively.

That said, I'd actually -like- to be able to duel fellow RPers when it's appropriate, without being removed to the confines of a (contextually) nonsensical arena map. More importantly, I'd like the duels to be witnessed by others involved in the RP without resorting to the above mentioned, and turning those fellow RPers into...odd little camera ships.

Now, with respect to WPvP griefing. I hear that. After a brief stint in WoW and Aion, I could do without the asshattery and compulsive typing of "QQ!" in every chat channel available.

But respectfully, guys, c'mon. Is there -any- of that which can't be done now? I've been spammed with "arena invites" by people who want to duel me. They -can-, presently, follow me and flatten my mobs. They can (if they're clever), train a mob on me now.

What's the difference I'm not seeing here? Whether its a direct, boolean, PvP flag, or a persisten "invite to the arena"...it's the same mechanic. The only material difference is -where- the fight takes place. Personally, I'd love to be able to conduct a few RP duels at the base of Atlas.

    *shrug*

woof. That'd better be a REALLY innovative MMO - they're asking alot (for an MMO) at the high settings.

Well that pretty much leaves me at the 280 or the 5850. And as I generally understand it, the 5850 would be the better card of the two since it supports the newer DirectX and OpenGL tech as well as having better benchmarks from what I see on the web. Or I could do a pair of 5770's in Crossfire for about the same price and performance. Either of those should do well in UM if I'm reading things right. I know UM is still in flux but I'd expect we'll hear more soon and that the numbers will only get better as they optimize and tweak it up. Or am I just dreaming there? So that sounds like my best options at this point unless someone has a better suggestion?
Last I read, UM wasn't -presently- supporting Crossfire. That may have changed, but if so it's only changed very recently.

I'm glad you thought of this before I got around to it. Always make sure your graphics drivers are up to date!

Nvidia users can drivers from: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index5.aspx?lang=en-us

ATi users can get drivers from: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

And no: just because you ran Windows Update, that does not mean that your drivers are up to date either.
    Omg...Saist noticed me ^.^
  16. I don't suppose you picked up the hotfix for the ATI drivers, did you? The 9.12 one?

It produces a report of information, relevant to the operation of CoH, about your system. Paste it into a response here so that it can be reviewed. If you have too much trouble with that (though it really isn't too difficult), we could make-do with a dxdiag report.

For ATI I would say the HD 48xx, HD 57xx and HD 58xx series are safe bets.

My guess about Praetoria being optimized means full of glass buildings that will reflect your image as you pass and that there will be lots of reflecting pools.

Depends. Does Bestbuy offer anything else with that machine? If not, then you'd be paying -even- more; buying the machine you linked to, then buying -another- graphics card. That would be a sad sad thing. >.>
  22. I don't see anything -wrong- with that rig. It's a respectable processor core, decent video card, and plenty to work with. Power and Cooling? Couldn't possibly say, based on what you linked to - you'll notice the "specs" sheet don't list either. The only way to find out about it would be to find the actual specs provided by the manufacturer.

For what its worth, I think you could probably build an identical machine for considerably less by going through Newegg.

on the 26th. how well do you guys think it will run with ultra mode? what else could i do to upgrade this comp? or if i should get a even better comp. the comp cant cost more than 1 grand. but i can spend more on upgrades, let me know. thanks
Unless I'm quite mistaken, the card in that rig doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Ultra Mode. (See: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...rd,2544-7.html).

I took a quick glance at what it's offering, and I'm having a hard time saying "It's worth that price". Personally, I think you can do better, especially if you're willing to assemble it yourself. I would suggest you start with FX's $600.00 rig and use your remaining $400.00(ish) budget space to bring up the performance - wouldn't be a terrible way to go.

If you're more comfortable buying a pre-fabbed machine, I think there are probably better retailers for it than Best Buy, and certainly better manufacturer's than HP (particularly for gaming). Take a few minutes and have a look at the (numerous) recent, VERY recent, threads on this same sort of topic - I recall them being quite full of vendor options for just this thing.

On the Windows 7 front I have been running it on all of my computers (even my netbook) since beta without any problems. I would absolutely suggest it over XP and more so over Vista.
    Moreover, you can get a decent 5770 for eff-all compared to a 5870. ^_^

Following Posi's update from earlier today: CoX:UM, presently, does not support SLI. Operative word being "presently".
