1. Okay, I have a few things to add here.

First, I think this thread belongs on the PvP and Arena board, so I'm going to move it there.

Second, I've had to remove a large chunk of this thread. Some of this was due to off-topic posts about smoking, and some was due to unpleasant posts that were violating the Message Board Rules and Guidelines.

My apologies to anyone whose valid posts were caught up in this. To those of you who made the offending posts, I would hope you know who you are. If not, please reacquaint yourselves with the Message Board Rules and Guidelines.

Third, as many others have already pointed out (albeit sometimes with slightly less tact and tolerance than I would like) and I have explained several times in the past, PvP zones (including Recluse's Victory) are just that - PvP zones. If you choose to enter them, you are consenting to PvP. Other players in a PvP zone are doing absolutely nothing wrong if they attack you. They're doing what the zone is designed for. If you don't like being attacked by other players, don't enter the zone.

My apologies if any of this sounds blunt, but it really is that simple. I can't think of a clearer way to explain it.

Yes, RV offers a variety of cool things and nice rewards. This is because it's a PvP zone - the risk is high, so the rewards are high. If Cryptic were to add a PvE version of RV (ignoring for a moment whether such a zone would make any sense), I would fully expect the rewards to be reduced to match the reduced risk that such a zone would present.

Finally, implying that people who enjoy PvP - and thus go to the PvP zones to participate in it - are stupid, immoral, selfish, immature or otherwise lacking in some way is not very helpful. Comments of this nature are almost guaranteed to kick off something unpleasant, so please avoid them in future.

Please use this thread to nominate submissions for the Creative Genius award for the month of September 2006.

[/ QUOTE ]

Is that a typo?

[/ QUOTE ]
It is. My apologies - fixed now.
3. Please use this thread to nominate submissions for the Creative Genius award for the month of October 2006. This is probably a good time to remind you all that we've recently updated the guidelines for the Creative board and the Creative Genius competition - you can read them here.

These nominations will remain open for one week, until Monday 13 November. The winner will be announced later in that week.

To nominate a submission, please post a link to the appropriate post.

There are some important rules to bear in mind when making nominations:
<ul type="square">[*]You may only nominate one submission. If you nominate more than one submission, only the first one will count.[*]You may not nominate your own submissions.[*]Nominated submissions must have been originally posted to this board during October 2006.[*]All original submissions first posted to these boards in October 2006 are eligible for nomination, regardless of what form they take.[*]Only nominated submissions will be considered for the Creative Genius award.[*]If no nominations are received, there will be no Creative Genius award for October 2006.[*]If you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please post them to The Creative Board and Creative Genius. This thread should only be used for nominations, and any off-topic posts will be removed.
Happy nominating!

Namely, that the Arena channel is intended for finding and arranging Arena matches (the clue is in the name). Any other discussion (and that would include discussions about PvP in general or the PvP zones) is 'off topic' and should not take place on the Arena channel.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks Bridger, its good to have some clarification.

Must admit to having a small smile though, as this means that those complaining about others chatting on Arena, have actually shot themselves in the foot as the channel is not for pvp chat etc either, just arranging matches

[/ QUOTE ]
Yes, another basic rule of thumb is that if what you want to say or talk about is only aimed at a specific person or small group of people, you shouldn't use a broadcast channel for it.

To use the Arena channel as an example, it's fine to post something like 'Level 40 Scrapper looking for Arena opponents'.

If, after the match, you want to discuss the match with the person you fought, you should do so rather a non-broadcast channel such as Local, Tell, Team, SG or a Global channel (depending on who and how many people you're talking to).
5. Hello and welcome to the Creative board. This section of the official message boards is intended to celebrate and encourage the creativity of the City of Heroes and Villains community, and provide an outlet where creative works inspired by the games can be shared with your fellow players.

In addition, there is a monthly Creative Genius competition, which awards the poster of the best creative submission with a special board title and a 60 day Game Time Card for their account.

As such, there are a few special rules and guidelines that apply to this board, in addition to the standard Message Board Rules and Guidelines. Please read the following information carefully before using the Creative board.

Using the Creative Board
As already mentioned, this board is intended to be used as a place for players of City of Heroes to share creations inspired by the game. This can be anything from fiction to mouse cursors, from movies to desktop wallpapers - if it's been inspired by City of Heroes, you can post it here.

There are, however, a few things to bear in mind when using this board:
<ul type="square">[*]Feel free to post fictional work directly to this board. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer hosting for other types of files, so you will need to find your own hosting for any other work and post a link to it.[*]Only original work can be considered for the Creative Genius award. As such, any work that is not wholly original should have this clearly indicated when posted. For further discussion of this point, please see the Original Work section below.[*]Please limit new threads to posts containing new creative work, or relevant requests (discussions of how to create movie files, requests for hosting solutions and so on). All other threads will be removed.[*]Please keep all feedback positive and/or constructive. Consider how you would feel if someone attacked something you have worked hard to create, and respect the effort that others have made.[*]Please do not post links to any work that other board users may find offensive, or that otherwise violates the usual Message Board Rules And Guidelines. Adult material should be clearly identified as such, and adult fiction should be hosted elsewhere and a link (with appropriate warnings regarding the content) posted.[*]NCsoft is not responsible for the content of any work or links, or for any technical problems that may arise from the use of any material linked to on this board.
The Creative Genius Award
The Creative Genius award is a monthly prize intended to celebrate the creativity of the European City of Heroes and City of Villains community and recognise the outstanding work of our creative players.

In the first week of each month, a nominations thread will be posted to this board, in which you can nominate one creative submission from the previous month for the Creative Genius award. These nominations threads will be open for one week, after which the nominated submission we judge to be the best will win a unique board title of their choice and 60 days of game time.

There are a few ground rules for the nominations threads:
<ul type="square">[*]You may only nominate one submission from the previous month. If you nominate more than one submission, only the first one will count.[*]You may not nominate your own submissions.[*]Nominated submissions must have been posted to this board during the appropriate month - for example, to qualify for the nominations thread for June (which will be posted in the first week of July), a submission must have been posted to this board for the first time during the month of June.[*]All original submissions first posted to these boards in the appropriate month are eligible for nomination, regardless of what form they take. [*]Submissions must be the original work of the poster to be considered for the Creative Genius award.[*]Only nominated submissions will be considered for the Creative Genius award.[*]If no nominations are received for a given month, there will be no Creative Genius award that month.[*]Some standard terms and conditions apply to this competition. They are listed below, in the Terms and Conditions section.
Original Work
For legal reasons, only creative submissions that are the original work of the poster may be considered for the Creative Genius award.

As such, any submission posted to this board that is not wholly original should clearly indicate this, and such works cannot be nominated for the Creative Genius award. A simple 'Based on an original work by &lt;artist&gt;' is generally all that is required.

For the purposes of this board, an 'original' work is defined as something that you created yourself 'from scratch' or using nothing other than materials from the games and official websites.

Examples of the kind of things that don't qualify are re-touching or modifying artwork created by someone else, or recording a version of a popular song with modified lyrics. In addition, movies using music to which the creator does not have the rights are also included. (If you wish your movies to qualify for the Creative Genius award, the best idea is to use in-game music. You can find several examples from CoH and CoV at ftp://ftp.coh.com/music/ - feel free to use these tracks in your movies.)

If you are ever in any doubt as to whether a specific work will qualify for the Creative Genius competition or not, please feel free to ask here or email ghostraptor@ncsoft.com for a decision.

Please note that we do not wish to discourage the posting of such works, nor do we intend to imply any form of value judgement. Many of our personal favourite submissions to the Creative board have been things that could not qualify for the Creative Genius competition. It's a legal restriction which we must abide by, nothing more.

Terms and Conditions
The following standard Terms and Conditions apply to the Creative Genius award competition:
1. If you are less than 18 years old you must read these terms and conditions with an adult.
2. These competitions are open to all European residents, aged 12 years and over, except for employees NCsoft or their immediate families or any companies or agencies directly connected with the creation and administration of these competitions.
3. NCsoft reserves the right to verify the eligibility of applicants and check their identity.
4. No payment is necessary to enter these promotions.
5. Multiple entries are allowed - you may post as many creative submissions to the Creative board in a month as you like.
6. NCsoft's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
7. Prizes are non-transferable, non-negotiable and no cash alternatives will be offered.
8. NCsoft reserves the right to substitute a prize for another prize of equal value.
9. NCsoft will not accept responsibility for loss through technical fault, incomplete, illegible or other damaged entries. Proof of entry is not automatically proof of receipt.
10. By participating, each applicant agrees to abide by and be bound by these terms and conditions without alteration.
11. NCsoft reserves the right to cancel or amend these terms and conditions without notice or compensation.
So get those creative juices flowing and show us just how skilled, talented and innovative you can be. Fame, fortune and the admiration of your fellow heroes and villains await!
6. Okay, had another read through of this thread and there's a couple of other things I should have mentioned in my previous posts (sorry, Monday morning syndrome).

First, I completely understand how frustrating it is for people who wish to use the Arena channel for its intended purpose to find it awash with off-topic conversations and spam. I also appreciate the efforts that some people take to try to explain to people, either in-game on the channel or here on the boards, what the channel is intended for.

However, please try to limit yourselves to politely requesting that people take off-topic conversations and other matters to a more appropriate channel. If they become abusive or unpleasant, please report their behaviour with /petition and use /ignore to avoid anuy further problems.

I would like to discourage any attempts to 'take the law into your own hands'. They frequently backfire, rarely have a positive outcome, and may (depending on exactly what you do) result in disciplinary action being taken against you by the GMs.

So ask politely, /petition if this results in any unpleasantness, use /ignore. (Which, by the way, is a good general rule of thumb for any situation involving another player doing something that you'd rather they didn't.)

Finally, I'm concerned by the amount of bickering that is developing in this thread. If it doesn't stop, I'll have no choice but to lock or remove the entire thing, so please be civil to each other.

I have posted the same thing several times in the past, but I appreciate that the last time was a while ago.

[ QUOTE ]
BUT how long ou think it'll take for the US team etc to come up with a solution?

[/ QUOTE ]
I honestly don't know, and I don't know if there is a solution that everyone will like. As I said, I'll bring it up as a topic for discussion and see what the response is.

[ QUOTE ]
as i cant see it being a major big prob removing it for a global one or renaming it to a server wide one and adding a specific harder to type channel called, ah dunno, pvp or sommert, or keeping arena name and changing as earlier said by someone to server or something ?

[/ QUOTE ]
In all honesty, I very much doubt that a server-wide, non-Global Chat channel for 'general chat' will ever be added to the game. Such channels just tend to fill people's chat windows with text that they're not interested in, which they either ignore or remove from their chat windows (which rather defeats the point).

The Global Chat system is intended to allow people to chat across zones and even servers without imposing their conversations on players who don't share the same interests or concerns.

I appreciate that the five channel limit can be a problem for some people, but I'm afraid I don't quite see how five Global channels is not enough to replace one server-wide channel.
8. [ QUOTE ]
Its a bit of a pattern MaX, u keep coming in with what looks like useful advice but its incomplete and is just a waste of time for people to keep asking for an explanation.

[/ QUOTE ]
While I appreciate the effort to explain how to use the command MaX mentioned, this kind of comment doesn't achieve anything useful or constructive, and was not necessary to your post. Please try to avoid similar digs in the future.
9. First, I agree (and have long thought) that the Arena channel is problematic. We have discussed this internally in the past, and I will bring it up again with Cryptic and the US team to see what the current thinking is.

Until I hear any differently, though, the same rules apply that I have mentioned before. Namely, that the Arena channel is intended for finding and arranging Arena matches (the clue is in the name). Any other discussion (and that would include discussions about PvP in general or the PvP zones) is 'off topic' and should not take place on the Arena channel.

There are many chat channels in the game that are far better suited to other topics, and do not involve imposing your discussions on the entire population of the server or preventing people from using Arena for its intended purpose.

Please use the in-game chat channels responsibly, and with consideration for your fellow players.
10. Okay, a couple of things.

Aiming negative comments at a specific person or group of people is against the rules on these boards (depending on the situation it counts as flaming, 'naming and shaming' or both). I've just had to remove some posts from this thread for this reason.

Cross-posting is also against the rules, so I'm going to lock this. If you wish to take part in this discussion, please do so in the thread linked to in the original post.

Yes, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask that material of such an adult nature be hosted elsewhere - you're welcome to post a link to it, as long as a suitable (ie, large and bold and obvious) warning is given.

Thanks.
12. [ QUOTE ]
Oh my god you guys are gullible. Did it not occur to you that this was completely ridiculous? Something like this will NEVER happen, but it goes to show how easy it is to convince so many people that it is! I haven't laughed harder at a videogame in months. It got even better when it spread to Defiant too! Evidently both servers are as gullible as each other!

I'd like to extend special thanks to Jumanji who played along to the end, and even started this thread for me. Special mention also goes to Siru Jim who played along fantastically as well.

We got you guys good.

Edit: Just to clarify, my character on Union was Sumiyaka, a soon to be PvP specced Illusion/Empathy controller.

[/ QUOTE ]
Okay, a few things here.

First, I understand that in the spreading of this rumour, it was claimed that the information came from me. This is stepping perilously close to violating the EULA rules against impersonating NCsoft and/or Cryptic staff, which is a serious offence that can result in account suspensions or even permanent bans.

It's also the in-game equivalent of trolling (deliberately posting inflammatory comments in order to bait other users).

The post above implies that the original poster of this thread was 'in' on the scam. If true, that would make his post trolling, which is a serious violation of the Message Board Rules and Guidelines.

Winding up your fellow players serves no useful or constructive purpose. It also creates a great deal of unnecessary work for myself - and while I'm sorting out this kind of mess, I can't be doing anything useful or constructive for the community as a whole. Likewise, while our GMs are dealing with /petitions about it, they can't be helping players who have a valid problem.

Basically, it's not big and it's not clever - please don't do it.

As to the rumour itself, as far as I know, that is all it is - a rumour. I know of no plans to convert Siren's Call into a PvE and/or RP zone, whether temporarily or permanently.

To the best of my knowledge, we couldn't even do it if we wanted to, at least not without Cryptic making some fairly major code changes. And even if we could, why make Siren's Call an RP zone? The entire history and set-up of the zone is geared towards PvP. Making it PvE makes absolutely no sense in terms of the game world.

Finally, to all of you who actually listened to this rumour, if you don't see a 'red name' post here or on the US boards that even mentions the subject, and there's nothing on the official sites here or in the US, then anything you hear is just a rumour and should be treated as such (ie, with a large pinch of salt and some extra salt on the side).
13. Just wanted to mention that I've had a quick run-through of the thread and done my best to remove as much of the 'is this thread needed' stuff as possible, at the request of several posters.

My apologies to those who may have lost entirely valid posts. (I tend to be very wary of removing posts from roleplaying threads, as I'm aware of the problems it can cause. However, in this case it was requested and I felt that it was better to do it now than later).

While I'm here, I also wanted to expand a little on my previous post. Personally, I see no problem with having multiple threads about different aspects of roleplaying in City of Heroes and Villains.

Essentially, as long as people are talking about their roleplaying, I'm not that concerned whether they do it in one thread, two threads or in dozens of smaller threads.

I would be concerned if people stop posting about roleplaying.
14. Okay guys, I'm afraid I haven't had the chance to read the entire thread just yet, but I did want to address something that came up near the start: There is no problem, in my view, with someone wishing to start a more 'general' thread about roleplaying on Union outside of the GG meets. If you don't feel that the thread is necessary or useful to you, then you don't have to use it.

On a more general note, I think it's probably long overdue for some of the RP threads on the Union boards to be moved to the Roleplaying board. It should help to keep things focussed.

If you'd like to discuss this with me, please drop me a mail. For now, though, I'm going to move a few of the threads and see how it works out.

Shouldn't this be in the PVP forum?

[/ QUOTE ]
Yes.
16. I'm going to assume that you're looking for a Hero SG, and move this to the Union - Heroes board.

If you want a Villain SG, let me know and I'll move it to Union - Villains.
17. Okay, guys, I think that all we had here was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and I don't think anyone involved has done anything 'wrong'.

The rules and guidelines for the Creative Genius competition - and the Creative board in general - will be updated and expanded in the near future, in order to avoid any potential problems of a similar nature.

If anyone wishes to discuss this matter further with me, please do so via email. I don't see any benefit in further discussions here.

Thanks.

Just to clarify the situation, this is the problem.

Had it been made clear that the image was a retouched version of another work, things might be different (although it's likely that the work would need to have been used with permission).

As it is, I'm afraid I've had no choice but to disqualify the Outcast Girlfriend.

I will be making a new sticky and adjusting the existing ones to make the situation regarding original work and the Creative Genius competition clearer.

This Thread like the SG will be kept in Swedish, i hope there wont be any problems with that, if there is a problem a redname is more than welcome to contact me about it.

[/ QUOTE ]
I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to stick to English on these boards, for a variety of reasons (not least of which is that I don't read Swedish, so I won't be able to moderate the thread).

Sorry about that - if you want to use Swedish, I'd suggest setting up a website and/or message board for the SG.

Thanks.
20. Done!

The board titles are sorted, and I'll be contacting the winners to award their free game time shortly.

Many thanks to all of you for your patience while I got all this sorted out, and my apologies for how long it's taken.

September's Creative Genius will be announced in the next few days, and there's plenty of time left in October if you're feeling artistic.
21. The Creative Genius winners for the months of October 2005 through to May 2006 are as follows:

October 2005: MiniNukette for Origin Story

November 2005: ShadowGhost for The Mistress of Gravity

December 2005: Silver_Weasel for To Sleep... Perchance to Rest

January 2006: Innigo for The Amazing N00b (Part 1)

February 2006: Lord_Qel_Thyr for A Moment Out of Line

March 2006: Callista for CoH Song

April 2006: Fire_Guardian for Ask A Ben

May 2006: Swissy for Orina!

(Please note that some submissions may contain mature themes and/or language, and may not be suitable for younger players.)

Congratulations to all the winners!

24. Again, my apologies for the delays. I'm begining to think that this is cursed.

I'm almost caught up after hurting my hand at the end of last week, but this week is already looking very busy. I will do my best to make the final selections before the Brighton Meet, but I'm afraid that right now I can't make any promises...

Rest assured that I haven't forgotten, it's just a matter of finding the time in between all the other stuff that's going on at the moment.
