Quote:Yeah, I lean on my big 3, KO Blow, Haymaker, and Hurl. I am 2 levels until FS, and we all know how fun that is to spam. I only have taunt one slotted right now (@36), but of course I will be playing around with that. I do spam it as often as poss to try to control the agro. My goal is to become an artist with it. I was bruting for almost 3 years, so mashing damaging attacks is second nature. I am mostly successful at using the Vet Sands of Mu and catching multiples with it. I know non primary attacks don't hold agro as well, but its currently my only type of area attack. In general I am surprised that this guy puts out decent damage. I think I had long ago psychologically dissed tanks. Then someone pointed out that base damage for tanks is slightly above brutes w/no rage going. So, no rage, but the ability to survive craploads of damage.... works for my current character. (All my best online characters are inspired by storytelling lines with my friends and family-this guy has a great story going)Just keep in mind that, as important as taunt duration is, damage is a key component in threat generation - so don't skimp out on your damage dealing too much.
If anyone has ideas beyond grabbing Kinetic Combats to softcap defenses, I would be glad to hear them. Are there PvP enhancers I should be looking at? My main goal is to increase defenses in a min/max fashion. Minimum investment of slots for maximum return in defense buffs. I will be working on the character for another week and hopefully 50. Then I will be getting Shards and Accolades. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. -
Interesting discussion on taunt, thank you. I play this guy as a tanker, and I spam taunt. Even when running as the secondary tank i use taunt as my primary focus, and damage dealing secondary. Shaping the combat for a blaster or other AoE player is much better than trying to beat everything to death myself.
as stated above, i am building for tankiness primarily. So I will be trying for Typed defenses. I have never done this before. Again, money is not a problem. I have yet to start really looking at the sets. i've been around long enough to know the Kinectic Combats are almost synonymous with def cap. Should i be looking at PvP sets or anywhere else to min/max the defense capping? -
thanks Dechs. You always have great advice as I remember and this sounds spot on logical. I will start my shopping lists.
-
Hello, and thanks for any advice in advance. I have been playing a few years, mostly brutes. Kinda stopped playing, but keep the subscription up because I love the character design software. I recently designed a Tank based on a new character I have for an over the table top game. Based on the other game Willpower/Super Strength Tank was the way to go.
What is the most efficient way to enhance Willpower Tanks to maximize their general effectiveness. I know of course that defense is wonderful, and more regeneration, is, well, more regeneration. But as far as squeezing the most out of the build, what is the most logical direction?
I can strip a couple characters who are very very well equipped for this experiment. so money is seriously not an object.
and GO... -
This is a partial quote from a guide in the Dominator Guide section. I am peeling thru that info ffor my odd build. Hope this helps.
Potential Suckfest #1: Dealing with Active Defence
If you've never played a Blaster before the concept of Active Defence will be new to you. Not new in a "Wow, what is that?" kind of way. But new in a "Jeebus, what the hell is that sharp pain in my rectum?" kind of way. Only two ATs in the entire game rely on Active Defence. The Blaster and the Dominator. Active Defence means you must specifically address every threat to your toon at any given moment with an active power. Every other AT in the game has a method of generating passive defence. Whether through armours / defensive toggles, anchored debuffs, pbaoe debuffs, a private army of pets, etc etc. These are all methods of defending yourself and increasing your survivability that require little to no further input from the player after being "flipped on". They are constant abilities that aren't typically hampered by durations of effect.
Blasters and Dominators are different. They must specifically address each threat, each mob, with an active power to defend themselves. With Blasters their best defence is a great offence. With Dominators, or defence is Control. We must use an active power on every threat to our person. Every mob needs to be targetted directly or indirected. Every mob needs to be addressed with a Hold, Disorient, Sleep, Confuse, Knockdown, etc. After which each mob, if still alive, will have to be re-addressed before the duration of Control expires. If we fail to do that, we die. Death on a Dominator is the result of you, the player, losing control of the situation around you. You've either missed a mob, failed to notice a mob, let a mob get a loose or been surprised by a mob. Your first and only level of defence is suddenly forfeit. There's no armour, toggle, debuff, anchor or anything to that effect left to save you. Unlike our Controller cousins who possess a Defender set loaded with any number of buffs, debuffs, heals, toggles and so on that can increase their surviability.
Ironcially, a Blaster coming over from CoH will probably have the best playstyle mindset to deal with a Dominator. Rather then a Controller. Who's life is actually much safer.
Potential Suckfest #2: Poor Power Choices
There are some suck powers in every Controller set. They won't cripple you or anything but they may prevent you from choosing better options. There's also some powers that in all frank honesty, just aren't of much use to us. Lastly, there are powers which ARE good but not until later on in the game when SO's, slots and Stamina are available. Controllers have already been using our primaries for over a year. Our best point of reference for which powers are good and which are passable is the Controller community. If you're unsure about a particular power you should read the associated Controller guide before bothering to ask on the Dominator forums. The Dominator community is a bit on the small side and our population is a bit on the low side. Not to mention half the advice given there is completely horrible. Whereas Controllers, as I said, have already been using these powers for a year. They've already debated all these powers to death. Read the advice of those that came before us. Even if they are filthy heroes.
I'll go more into specifics about power choices in the next chapter.
Potential Suckfest #3: Poor Slotting
Probably one of the most critical failures. To put it bluntly: 90% of our primary powers suck out of the box. They need slots. They need enhancements. Your core control powers WILL need 5-6 slots. Single target control can get away with 5 slots. AoE control NEEDS 6 slots. Your secondary, Assault, can maintain a solid amount of effectiveness using 4 slots for single target powers and 4-6 for Cone / AoE powers depending on the power and your perference about it.
Once again, I'll go into specifics next chapter.
Potential Suckfest #4: My damage sucks!
Honestly, it really doesn't. With proper slotting our damage is perfectly fine. We also have a snowball's chance in Hell of ever seeing any sort of significant boost in damage. So you'll have to get over it or go play a Corruptor. We're a support AT. We do deal a good amount of damage but we're not going to topple high damage ATs. Nor should we. If you really feel you aren't doing enough damage then pick Energy or Fire as a secondary. Both are heavy hitting and Fire has it's own inbuilt damage buff. Either that or wait for your pet. Most of our pets can contribute a significant and even surprising amount of damage.
Potential Suckfest #5: Not all Dominators are created equal.
Finally, and sadly, not all sets make a good Dominator. Simple as that. If you're looking for uber damage, Psi Assault probably isn't the way to go. If you're looking for control, chances are you shouldn't click on Gravity. Yes, it's unfair, but thats the way things are. Once again I refer you to the Controller community if you really want to know how a set stacks up. However, I will, bluntly, advise you to steer clear of Gravity. I know some of you love it and some of you will disagree with me. Even I love the graphics for it. But the painful truth is it doesn't make a good Dominator set. Even as a Controller set it's needed love for a long time. It's long animation times, few soft control options and a pet which isn't going to provide you with that which you'll likely be lusting for ( More damage ), you may as well save yourself the frustration.
Lastly, if you're truely unsure which set is going to do it for you in the long run, I suggest Plant Domination. Plant is the only primary that was specifically designed for our AT. Thus it's built for us and contains all the tools the devs felt Dominators needed. You can't really go wrong with it.
3. The Care and Feeding of Dominators
Building a Dominator doesn't have to be rocket science. But it does take some knowledge of the game and some trial and error. Chances are by the time you hit 24 you'll have something you want to respec out of now that you've had a good test run with it. Heck, you'll likely feel the same by 34 as well. 1-24 is more forgiving then 24+ and will serve as a good test drive for you to see what works, what doesn't work and which powers you picked just don't suit you. Or outright suck. All that being said there is a core Unholy Trinity of powers every Dominator should try and have. The minimum required to effective. These are a Single Target Hold, AoE Hold and some form of AoE or Cone Soft Control. You should try and have one of each of these by level 18-20. 26 with Ice. Having these 3, and having them well slotted, will be your core tools and the key to having a decent Dominator at higher levels. Which powers fit in each of the 3 differ from set to set. But should be pretty evident by glancing at your list of powers. Still, I'll elaborate: -
Okay, 50'd spent a few truckloads of influence, raided most of my bases for treasure, took a few hours and the Respec is done.
Tonight i will be teaming, running ITF and LGTF (I hope). i do not think there will be any problems there, i have been running him on these since 45 and I got him dialed for that.
last night I did the mender thing, and encountered a problem with the Honoree room. Just to much to Dom for me, I got a friend to help, and we ended up pulling, but still, without help i do not know if i could have finished that one.
I plan to try some soloing for badges, and quick A merits. Mostly this is a team player, and i know my rolle there pretty good, control agro when things are ugly, and blast when things are good. But soloing is not something i have excelled at with Doms. The pet helps a lot, but my AoE hold is not up quite often enough (I feel) and I love wormhole, but it has a small AoE. I am mostly running him as a Blaster solo, with tricks. Do I just need to relax and let everything recharge, or is there something I should be doing different to speed through stuff? Have full stealth power for speed running. 130% global + Hasten.
Does anybody have insight into how to quickly pop a tough room when I have to? If there are too many I really worry my hold will deplete before the killing is done, then I am standing there with a bunch of people at 25% health, and they are really irritated. i would love to figure out how to use dimension shift better. Maybe Wormhole a few, shift the big group, kill, hold the ones coming out of DS and then kill? Is that to complex? Will it even work most of the time? -
Here it is, going for a more "hiding Blaster that can Dominate" feel, which is how I run him. Mostly hovering team fire support and agro control.
50'd last night, respec is done. I think I moved 4 slots around.
One big modification, I was able to Squeeze a 6 set of Gladiator's Net into my ST hold instead of the Basilisk's gaze.
I finished my shard arc. Needed help with the Honoree part. A controller showed me how to pull him, never thought of that since only my Brutes have done this before.
He runs like a champ. 130% global recharge +hasten. It looks like he should have a ton of end problems, but none. I will be testing him for a month or so, but from last night I was starting to suspect I could drop the Primal Forces end management power. Very blaster feel, with Dom mitigation. I am trying to train myself to lean on Lift because theoretically it's my most enhanced range (plus good mitigation) "Power Bolt", and the first ranged Energy blast, since it has a buildup in it. Other than that I tailor my attacks based on range. When I feel comfortable i start unloading my 3 AoEs, which are almost chainable.

Thanks for any tips. -
Hey, still trying to monkey wrench this build. So, thanks to the boards help and my own play experience i realize now i am building a ranged Dom. who knew? lol
Anyways, i plan to take most/all of the ranged attacks in both. I looked at a number of places to put Apocalypse. Almost went with Power Push, but it has a range of 70. then i saw Lift from the primary. Short cast, fast recharge, okay damage. It could benefit from a nice kick, and that knock up on it will keep any Lt or less busy as well.
Anybody have insight on where to slot the set to get the most use out of it? -
Okay, i'll throw it into Explosive Blast then, thanks.
-
that helps lots. the one question left is number of targhets affected and radius. Red Tomax for trollers has torrent at 45* arc 10 target max. anybody know for Explosive Blast?
-
This is a huge recharge build, around 125% plus hasten, so not sure I need that. I am thinking I will use the cone more often, based on how I position myself, especially with hover, so it goes into knockdown, rather than screwing over my team with a giant radial KB attack being spammed.
-
Using Primal forces for my Grav/Energy.
Should I drop Ragnarok in Energy Torrent or Explosive Blast? -
Yeah, i am gonna redo the build today or tomorrow. I think you are right, whirling hands has to go. And yes, of course, I am leaning on Energy Transfer. Stacking ST stuns/holds is saving my fragile butt. As much as we all love AoE I just do not have the agro control to confidently charge into tough mobs and pop that baby. I find myself (conditions perfect) about 10-20 feet from the edge of mobs, either standing or hovering. When I do get in close it is when I am 99% sure agro is managed/or there are only a couple. Then, i can handle 3 pretty easily. A hold on one, Energy transfer on another, hold is up again for 3rd. then kill one, reapply holds, rinse, repeat. Currently at 47. Running ITF and LGTF for experience/merits. Also, not leveling to match this build as I was planning on respecing, and wanted to experiment with various powers. I am really loving the build. I do know it is not the most powerful dom build by far, but it really fits my concept. I am actually starting a short story for the character and may even sketch a bit on it. Wish I could squeeze Propel onto the build. That crap is just funny, and fits my concept. Its all about gravity and teleportation and robots. Not even sure how it would fit into the attack chain if I had it though. Guess I could hang slightly farther back and use it instead of Power Burst. Anyways I will try to post the 2nd version build up. Thanks for the tips.
-
Heh, i traditionally run brutes, and have never tried for S/L defense. Likewise, on my Dom I am the original paper tiger. One of the funnest parts is figuring out how I am gonna safely destroy my foes. (and I keep 2 3rd tier Rezzes in my toolkit)
And that is why i love doms after trying to love Blasters. It is possible to actually pull this off. granted, my 50 Fire/Psi Blaster can lay out tons more damage..... when he isnt running for his life. My dom can control combat and kill faster than my Brutes. Squishy, yes. But so much more functional for the team. Of course it helps to have played the game for years. I know I would have been a much worse Dom if I had not been a frontline Brute for so long. -
I am not great at Doms, my highest being 46 (my current...so close) However i did run just about all the builds up to around 22-23 concurrently. Just to see what they could do, including Fire/Fire. Now this is regular teaming, which i believe is the only way to run Doms (personal opinion). I can solo stuff, but Brutes are just easier for me solo. on a team of course, like withe all being squishy, it is agro management. Drop in behind the Brute or Tank after they get the attention of a group, and just kill everything around the Brute. Hold the Boss on the Brute, make your friends life easier. And just damage the crap outta everything around you.
My current build does not have a ton of global recharge yet, and only got hasten at 44. It is a Grav/Nrg. that means my AoE hold was up only a little faster than Dom was recharging. Wormhole up a little more often. I run this build on the ITF, and did the LGTF last night. Agro management again. Do not irritate everybody so that you can do minor/moderate damage. Instead, i ST hold a guy and take him down. Even with Bosses it doesnt take that long. i pick the meanest guys Bosses, Sappers, Widows, etc. I take them out of the fight, then i take them outta the world. i save up my AoE hold for a moment when the team seems to be struggling, or it is the perfect moment on a fresh spawn.
At 50, I will be around 117% Global recharge, plus Hasten. At that point i will have my AoE hold popping every spawn, and life will get easier. But still, it is agro management, agro management, agro management. Especially in places like TFs. It is really easy for a big room to have way more individuals than you can lock down. Pick your battles, knowing you can win them before you start. start small, build your technique. i can wormhole like an artist now. it's fun, and placing the mobs exactly where I want them is so rewarding. GL -
Quote:This makes sense. I pretty much blastroller right now, hitting my 3 main Blaster attacks almost always when not AoE Hold and *fav* wormhole. I will venture into a mob once in a while for the Whirling Hands thing, but not go out of my way for it. I prefer to wormhole a group onto itself if with a big team (so i dont mess other players arcs up to much) or pull/plant a group where i want them for easier grinding.Get Power Push. It's a very quick to animate blast with decent damage nowadays and absurdly high accuracy. It's your best DPA attack.
The single target melee attacks hit like trucks as well. Bone Smasher is quick to animate and hits hard (slightly harder than Propel but animates 2 seconds faster) and has a 50/50 chance to stun. With Domi up it will stun bosses half the time.
Total Focus is as slow as Propel to animate but does twice the damage(!) and comes with a guaranteed Mag 3 stun which benefits from Dominate.
Plus with the way range checks work you can Power Push something horrible and have a melee attack queued and the melee attack will still hit even if the enemy in the process of being knocked back. This means you can PP something and do the annoying TF Hang Time animation and the poor sap will be clobbered by it just as they're finding their feet, which means they get up stunned.
PP > Bone Smasher is a great combo as well for the same reasons
I really am having problems finding room on this build to get Power Push. I need the melee attacks, obviously, because I do lean on them, especially Energy transfer. i may need to drop invisibility. I have stealth in fly, and its ghetto, but does okay. -
Wonderful write up of Dom stuff by Lileaceae in the Guides section. I love stuff like that. As pointed out there, Grav is not the best out of the box set for Doms. Still, it was my concept, and i am heading into the final leveling stretch and then purpling and running this beast.
1st question) As most know, Grav is light on area hold/control. However, with Permadom, isnt the aoe hold/creative use of Wormhole almost as good as having a number of AoE holds/controls in your powers but underutilized due to recharge? My logic is all Doms lean on their AoE hold, and they are all the same. At a certain point, you spam that and everything else is just fun times. (with the exception of fire/fire AoE gods of pain) But, my robot concept doesnt have flamethrowers, so on with the games. And truthfully, I just love the Grav special effects. Still trying to find an excuse to put throwing forklifts at enemies in my build. But again, with near 200% recharge, isnt the one AoE hold almost as good as having 4 AoE controls?
2nd Question) More of a follow up question. is there a Trade off. the i18 guide says Grav has good ST holds/damage. Now we all know that the big ST damage from Grav is not useful due to animation time (fun though). but still, when fighting AVs and such, does Grav do better because of it's ST stuff? -
Do an in-game petition. This will let them know you have a problem. You will get an e-mail to the account you set up for the game to communicate with you. they will ask you for more information usually (this is almost always 2nd e-mail, 1st is generic auto-response)
It has been 3 days and they are still working on mine. Seriously, this is getting old. -
to be honest, i was using this as "storage" mainly because if i place the money there 1) i will not be tempted to bid on crap 2) if i bid on crap at least i dont spend 1.5 billion for salvage on a keystroke error.
but seriously, it shouldnt be that freaking unstable.
also, i was finally contacted again to ask for more info, but have yet to see the e-mails show up....
and P.S. I would not be nearly so tempted to park money if the market did not have soooo many rubberbanding issues that buying 3 of the same thing or mysteriously bidding 100x the normal amount on something while shopping for something else were not a common occurence. Half my time I spend price comparing, the other half I have to make triple sure the market isnt hinckey on the bid I am trying to place. -
Quote:I ran SS/Will for almost a year as my main. Built "wrong" traditionally lol. i built mostly for recharge, 4 purple sets, LOTGs, etc. This exacerbated the problem you mention "Rage/Godmode" dual crash. I would regularly double stack rage, sometimes triple with outside buffs if I remember right. Yet I never had a problem with end. At most i had to pop a random blue, not out of necessity, because i happened to have one and my end was below 50%. I did run fighting toggles and CJ. I really never experienced the horrendous end crashes you describe. In fact, I am looking to rebuild a SS/Will more traditionally, softcapping S/L defense because it's such a no worries straightforward "session beer" character.I played an ss/wp and really enjoyed it right up until I tried an ITF and haven't touched it since. I want to start over a new brute but I am over the "hit-a-wall" crashes (rage and godmode crashes) and this combination looks like it would be exciting and has really good synergy and can be survivable. However it is important for me that it will perform well on the endgame tf's especially ITF and LGTF without too much pimping so please let me know your experiences with it.
Willpower has one of the smallest crashes for "godmode". The only thing I think is easier is taking Invulnerability and NOT taking tier 9 Unstoppable. Viola, no crash. (My current build)
Invul and Will are the Brute armors i know best. Super Strength is also a big favorite of mine. I will let others point out if there are some good alternative armors they are familiar with. I might suggest looking at a Regen Scrapper. I keep flirting with them because it looks so fun from an easiness perspective, but havent delved deeply into them yet. Mainly I have yet to fall in love with a Scrapper primary. Anyways, GL. -
This is like that bad commercial right now with the russian guy answering a phone to redeem something. "Hello, my name is Daisy..." And the more you try to communicate with the customer service department the slower they get?
Seriously, I do office work for a living. I know how to communicate about problems on accounts and try to get a resolution. However, when there is no response from anyone than an automated e-mail "Hey, we care about you...just wanted to let you know, we care..." it gets kind of dumb.
They could at least put a message in the game not to leave stuff in e-mail accounts. I assumed the first time was an anomaly, especially since the person that fixed it never mentioned anything untoward. If they know they have a bug eating character rewards, they should mention it to the community. -
They fixed the 1st one, but I have sent 2 requests for 2 days over the 2nd. It was a LOT of cash (for me). I got those stupid e-mails, which I responded to. But nothing else, no more e-mails, no fixing it. Is there a office somewhere I can call (not kidding)
-
i have had missing e-mails twice over the last 3 weeks. the first set were a small amount of influence and random enhancers. the second was a ton of cash i was moving into a dom character i am building.
Anybody know why this is happening, when it will be fixed? -
This is a bare bones look at my planned Grav buildout. i believe I have 112.5% Global rech + hasten. So, the permadom thing is solved.
I am thinking of foregoing Crush, and getting teleport self later, but not sure, with stealth pool and fly, TP self is of limited use. Or I could get team teleport, but that is a vet power I have. Anyways, these are somewhat preference questions.
The important questions are how does the buildout look? Will it work? i am new to mids, of course I plan on getting the non purples at 35th level, not sure how to manage that in mids. And i will be playing with the blank enhancer slots as well, but this is the thrust of the build.
thanks in advance for any tips.

Quote:I started this post, and I am a 42 month Vet. I have learned much from all of you, and i am quite grateful. I run Brutes mostly, and most of my 50s are SS brutes. I've heard some say those are not the best for AV soloing, others say they work. But I think the main thing is the type of content I run on my 50s. Mostly I run the LGTF, LRSF, ITF, etc. You know, the easy joint TF that both sides can hop on. Maybe the Honoree could be solo'd (from what i have read), but of course the team is dialed into it at that point in the mish, no wipes there, so it has never been a possibility.I suppose it shouldn't surprise me, but it still surprises me when people have no idea Scrappers and Brutes can solo AVs, much less solo them without temps and inspirations. How to do it has been common forum knowledge for so long, and so many people have by now. I know people new to the forums may not have ever encountered it, but people who've been around a while... well, I guess it's just a matter of what forums and what threads you read.
Still, at least the person that was most aggressive about not believing had only joined the forums last month, so it's less surprising in that case that he wouldn't know, and would honestly think it completely impossible, and that anyone claiming to have done it was a giant liar (which he made quite clear). On the other hand, he says he had 12 billion to bet, so he can't be a complete newb (unless he's a really good marketeer), so I feel less bad about you taking that easy money (not that soloing a 52 AV is easy, but still).
I'll probably give uplevel AVs a shot as I start getting my alpha slot builds figured out, but I'm pretty slow at that sort of thing, so I expect results after 50 other people have already done the same thing.
i was a little skeptical when I wrote this, but that is why I asked. thank you all so much for your responses. Makes me want to softcap a SS/Will Brute or a Dark/Will Scrap and get out there and do damage.
PS, i dont think that guy had the cash.
