  1. Heh, nothing immediately comes to mind about CoH itself, but...

CoH was the first MMO I played. Imagine my frustration when I subscribe to another and seem to be getting no rewards for the enemies I defeat, beyond the obligatory xp. Didn't take long to figure out, but was still an amusing /facepalm when I learned how to LOOT bodies.

  3. Heh, total segue. The first thing to mind when I saw the thread title was "Don't just break Batman's back, KILL him!"

That is not true. The devs never said CoH would never have power customization. What they actually said was that they would love to do power customization but we wouldn't get it for quite some time because of the huge amount of time and resources it would take to do it, so they shelved it until they could do it. And when they finally had a large enough staff to work on it we got it.
Eh, sometimes I'm too subtle. My intended points were:

    1) Saying something will "never" happen to a given game is just so much smoke-blowing and wishful thinking. Regardless of anything we as the player base want, the company will do what it believes is best for the company. NOT the game, NOT the players.

    2) As a general rule, the Devs here don't speak in absolutes. Player perceptions aside, they wisely tend to avoid committing to an absolute course of action by not using terms like "always" or "never", or providing exact dates for releases, or... the list is endless. Frankly, that way lies madness.

Wasn't debating this. Nothing is free. *I* might not have paid for it, but someone did.

CoH will never have power customization, either. The Devs said so many, many times.

That being said (tongue firmly in cheek), I don't favor going F2P if there isn't a clear advantage to doing so, for example drawing in new subscribers. Case in point: I subbed to another game in 2008. 18 months later, due to frustrations with the lack of soloability in main story content, I left. Less then a year ago, they switched to F2P. I started playing again, realized they'd rectified the majority of my issues with it, and I've been resubbed since late last year.

I have no qualms about playing (and subscribing to) a game that's "free". My problem is that I have no desire to see the game flooded with leeches... and in my experience, they make up a significant fraction of the people who keep asking for it.

Heh, previously being an avid spelunker (a real one, not just someone that got the badge ), I haven't seen a cave in this game, yet.

(Sorry for the art-quibble on my part! )

That being said, I imagine that the "discoteque tunnels" are problematic for many people with various forms of color-blindness, seeing as they're not just blue.

I know Magic was on test, because I built and saved several costumes, and copied them over to my live folder, so I'd be ready to go when it went live.
  10. Another couple of Corrs I have a blast with are dark/dark and sonic/pain.
  11. That's just crazy talk, there.
  12. Heh, I first joined the game around the time of i9, and of the issues since, I'd have to say i16 is one of my favorites, as the door opener for so many subtle character options. Another would be i10, with the thunder and panic of Rikti Invasions.

Ironically however, I wasn't even in the game yet (due to money/time constraints) when my hands-down favorite issue was released: i6 and City of Villains... because I refused to even look at the game UNTIL I could play a villain.

That would be Clarion. Is the one I mentioned having a problem with myself, above. After a bit more observation, I realized it was more than just seeing it applied to something like Singularity. Regardless of what it's applied to, it causes migraines for me in its default color, and presumably others that are equally bright. I have no issues with the rather similar Sonic fields - am starting to wonder if it's tied to the rate of pulsation, or the fact that Clarion seems to have harder "edges" to the waves, or the Flickering effect at the center. Just dunno yet, and too painful to look at long enough to form a better theory.

    6. There are two in electric control that I have issues with, the ground placement and a toggle - I have no idea what each one is called...
The ground effect is Static Field, and the toggle is Conductive Aura. Have known a lot of folks who have issues with one, the other, or both. My problems with Static Field stem from the brightness, which needs to be very lowered to be tolerable, making about 75% of the existing color palette useless on that power. With the folks that have issues with Conductive Aura, it seems to mostly be an issue with the rate of pulsation and expansion. There also seems to be a sort of jittery "rotation" of the effect, which may also contribute to problems. Again, much of the issues are worsened by increasing the brightness, but the base power isn't as bright as most in the set.

For instance... the house I grew up in was nice, but it was under the approach path for Mitchell Field, Milwaukee. International airport. And pretty much a direct line between it and Chicago. You'd probably think it'd be a real pain to try to, oh, sleep... but after not that long, it was just "Something." Very rarely did I even pay attention to an aircraft going overhead (and that would be because it sounded odd - and an airshow was coming. Got to see some nice aircraft fly over.)

The launcher's the same thing. There's not a *lot* of room there. Now, sure, saying "Anniversary sale" is nice, but as I look at it right now, it's a line of text off to the side - as opposed to the "Seven years of super!" or "Buy the animal pack!" And it's piled with other mentions of gamestop and whatnot. It's not particularly attention grabbing.

It *should,* ideally, be in the rotation with the animal pack and the WTF announcement. At least the change in image might catch your eye and get you to notice it. But instead it's in a generally easy to "blank out" section of rather dull text.
Granted, but since that space is always where they post news items of that type, the folks who don't give it at least a cursory glance every time they log in really DON'T have anyone to blame but themselves. If it was there, they were notified. The size of the text is really irrelevant, since anyone with a modicum of experience with the new launcher should know where to look.

The problem is (IMO) that most people are too "flash" oriented, these days. If something doesn't jump out, grab them by the nostrils and bite their eyelids, they don't see it. But that is a trait that can be unlearned.

People will find a way to ignore ANYthing, no matter how obvious you make it. Still, making a good-faith effort to notify folks is just good CYA. How much effort is necessary to qualify? YMMV.

That's NOT who you're supposed to blame? Blast, I've been doing it wrong the whole time!

Next thing I know, you'll be saying I shouldn't be blaming the cook for the dirty toilet!
  17. Discovered a new one last night: the center of the Clarion persistent effect. For the most part, it's identical to current sonic shields, but on small models and objects, it also has a rapid "sparking" effect at the very center, rather similar to a miniature Conductive Field (Elec Control). Wasn't too bad til it got applied to someone's Singularity. Almost instant migraine, there.

Is certainly a very "edge case" and easily fixed by toning down the default "gold" Clarion color, but hit me hard enough that I thought it worth warning folks.
  18. If it were possible to demote offline SG members, I'd certainly demote all their alts to the point of being unable to modify the base. Since offline promotion/demotion isn't possible, I might (depending on other factors of the relationship) kick them all in order to floor said permissions, if they want to rejoin.

I myself have a lot of time and emotional energy invested in two large SG bases. In as much as several of us have the permissions to change things, they all have the courtesy to talk to me about any changes, since 90%+ of the work has been done by me, and any serious mistakes would probably be handled by me. Having someone nonchalantly delete a room, even an apparently useless one, simply doesn't happen - they ask me why it's there, I tell them, we move on.
  19. I personally don't have any problems with the Barrier power, but several of our SG members do, along with other powers. It's to the extent many of our SG members have at least one costume slot dedicated to coloring certain powers so as to not induce migraines, and in several cases seizures. With Barrier in particular, it has nothing to do with ambient lighting; folks have had problems playing in the presence of that power in a sunlit room.

Another non-incarnate culprit is Electrical Control's Static Field. This has been known to give several of us severe migraines when colored at even "standard" brightness. Again, ambient lighting isn't a factor, or at least is not the solution. The intensity at the center of the ground effect, along with it's rate of pulsation, seems to be the core issue. I've had to drop off teams that have "abused" this power too extensively.

They would force friends to have to log off for the night - and potentially the next day, staying in a nice dark room and trying to get past their head trying to explode.

The current graphics don't bother me - other than thinking some are ugly. But after that fight, what WERE the devs thinking by putting these in? OK, I argued back when BABs was around - is *nobody* around dealing with power effects from that time, too?

Do we have to go through this fight again? Did they learn nothing from the last time?
I don't know, but these days, Barrier and Static Field seem to be the most egregious offenders.

So... it's a "choice" between removing characters with problematic power effects... or forcing some of our other team mates quit themselves, or risk a dangerous seizure. And you're adding "weight" to your side of the discussion by quibbling over my choice of method of emphasis. What are you expecting here, a golf clap?

Sure, it's a choice... a lop-sided and unnecessary one. If we were "obligated" to accept people from LFG being added to the league, the option to kick them would not be there. And the click-through "agreement" that some are so hung up on declaring as some kind of obligation... isn't. It's a notification, nothing more.

In the end, having a league lock function or not will change nothing for me. If, on the rare occasions that we're holding a restricted league, we get people from the LFG, they will be kicked. It will be polite, and inevitable. This doesn't disturb my sense of justice one bit. You can pretend to have the "moral high ground" all you want, but I'll lay good odds that the shoe will be on the other foot for you a lot sooner than it will for me. To wit, you're a lot more likely to eventually want the ability to lock a league a lot sooner than I'll wish I didn't have the ability to kick someone.

    You are not forced too.
Our SG would like to run these trials as SG events. Several members of our SG are prone to seizures resulting from certain types of visual stimuli. EVERY one of our SG members has a costume slot dedicated to minimizing this risk - i16 was a godsend for this reason, if no other. Getting some random add from LFG who has almost certainly NOT taken this consideration into account... Must. Be. Kicked.

They'll get an apology. They'll get the option to leave on their own. But please do NOT unilaterally make the assumption that there are NO circumstances under which an un-planned LFGer MUST be kicked.

And quite frankly, I'd rather THEY not have to waste their time joining us in the first place, and wind up BACK in the queue, thanks to circumstances beyond ANYone's control.
  23. You could host them on one of your own servers, like Triumph or Liberty, or any "low-population" server where folks "can't find anyone to team with". They've got all that spare space, right?
  24. At this stage, after 70+ posts, all I can add now is:

See what you started, Sylph? You should be ashamed!

    Yes. It's a joke.
