Allow me to add a couple more comments to FA's response:
1) Give me access to the code and show me how to work with it. I'd be happy to get in and, at the very least, fix the broken stuff in there. Seriously. I know exactly jack sh** about it, but I'd be just dandy with learning... and doing it... for nothing.
2) As a prime example of the kind of "attention" bases get from Paragon, I personally know folks who have identified the problematic code with the broken teleport beacons for Grandville and Pocket D. These folks haven't just bugged the issue, they've told Paragon how to easily fix it; the correct files are there, they're just referenced incorrectly. Did you even realize they were broken? A lot of people don't. It's been broken for so long, most people think they're supposed to be that way. THAT'S how long Paragon hasn't given a rat's butt about bases.
Seriously, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but a great many of us already HAVE taken the initiative and shown community interest in bases. All we have ever gotten in return... was requests for another list. -

Actually, on my 35 Thugs/Pain, I've long noticed that my Arsonist isn't so much suicidal as he is a fiery bundle of AoE aggro. He stays alive a bit better if I wander maps with my Brute on aggressive and everyone else on defensive.

Quote:So you plan on letting your subscription lapse?I have to vote in on the whole losing Incarnate powers if you go premium. Some people like myself bought GR for those incarnate powers period. To strip us completely of them after telling us those who bought GR would have access to them is simply a bad decision.

Quote:Depends on your point of view, which obviously differs from mine. Nothing about the ability to move SGs and their bases between servers implies anything (to me) about them also allocating any work to fix or add to existing base functionality, it merely supports their position of removing hindrances to character transfers.actually it does, because in order for something like that to happen, that would mean a strike team would be dedicated to those efforts.
I seriously doubt that they would just work on that feature alone and not tackle others.
Quote:as far as I'm concerned it's the kind of talk I was hoping for, they don't have to say when, or how, or what, they just have to say that they are. and they are. that's good enough for me.
Quote:I urge the community to refrain from the raging@ and just let things take this plotted course.
think cruise control.
Trust me, I've been on "cruise control" for some time now. I have honestly become comfortable... or perhaps numb... with the belief that they will NEVER again touch SG bases.
I'm also desperately hoping they eventually prove me wrong. -

1) Steal underpants!
2) ????
3) Profit!!!
Oh, wait... wrong question.
What everyone else said. -
*snerk* Or would be, if they weren't already taken...

I've always thought server "name watch" threads were a great idea in this game, and seeing as no one else ever seemed to get off their lazy butts to start one, I decided to get off MY lazy butt and start one.
Below is a list of characters I've had on Justice (even briefly) and later deleted. Some of these have sat idle for a couple of years at this point, but until Paragon gives us more than 36 character slots per server, there's virtually no chance that I'll ever re-use them. Here's to hoping some of these characters will "live" again in someone else's capable hands!
- Tooth and Claw
- Hex Arcanum
- Umbral Seed
- Demon Wheel
- Eisensturm
- Gentleman Boxer
- Warplight
- Right Red
Anyone else that wants to do so can obviously contribute their own discarded names.
This is just the short list of the ones I remembered off the top of my head, and re-checked on-line at the time of posting. I've deleted literally dozens, if not a hundred or more, concept toons on Justice with some very good (imo) names. I'll add others myself as I remember and do an availability check. -
Have always thought these threads were a good idea. If this one ends up being pretty popular, you'll want to request that it be stickied, as Virtue's own thread is.
Edit: the one on Champion is also stickied, though I'm too lazy at the moment to check every server, so there's a precedent of at least two that have been. I assume one would PM Zwillinger, Avatea, Mod12 or someone of that ilk to have it done. -

My own point being that, while ignorance of a given game's naming rules doesn't divest someone of the consequences of breaking them, a complete lack of enforcement does. I've seen it in a great many MMOs.

Yes. This is freaking awesome.

Actually, I thought it was throwing several characters in a crate, realizing that some stick up more than others, and stomping on them til they're all level. Kinda like what Reichsmann tries to do.

As opposed to a "Beat dead (nemesis?) horse" emote.
We have baseball bats, maces, sledgehammers, humungous tibia... when are we getting our dead horse? -
Quote:Re: unique vs global names (blah@whatever), I haven't weighed in one way or another. For the record, the idea doesn't bother me all that much, as long as the only place it appears is in chat. Still, ask yourself: what would most people think while running around in game upon seeing another character with the same visible name? This, I think, is the rub most people have issue with, and short of appending the VISUAL names with an ugly @global suffix, there's no way around some people having that reaction.Seems like you think your unique and original name makes you one truly special snowflake.
<Looks at your forum name... does a google search of said name...>
Irony makes me smile.
Re: the comments I've directly quoted: I have no idea how you construe any sense of "specialness" on my part from my earlier comments. I'll say it again - if the name someone wants it taken, try something else.
As for your google-fu, yes I liked the name, yes it was available, so yes I used it. I've never made any assertions that it was somehow unique or original to me. Had it been taken, I'd have gone with something else, easily, without tears. I've made no claims that every, or even ANY of my characters are somehow named "something cool that NO one would ever think of", simply that I have no difficulty following a different path if my first choice has been taken.
More than anything else about this dead-horse argument, the "But I want MY name!.." position baffles me. Newsflash: it's not yours. -
Quote:I have quite a few characters in CoH that are based on prior PnP RPG characters. I have never gotten fixated on, or even extensively delayed by, the fact that their "special" name was taken, either because I don't have a problem finding a new name that fits my desired concept, or because I didn't give them an extremely obvious, boring name in the first place. It's not coming up with new, original names that's my problem. When I'm creating a character from scratch, the unique name policy can sometimes be a hindrance, but usually not a deal-breaker. But the problem is that I (and many others, I'd imagine) don't just play new characters we created after this game launched. I also have several toons based on old Marvel PnP RPG characters I used to play back in the day, decades-old characters with established identities and names.
It's an incredibly amazing experience to see one of your own personal characters, developed back in your high school days, become a playable character in a video game! But when that name is unavailable, is it really the same character? Honestly, sometimes not, because of the ways that names shape identity. These types of characters are much trickier to rename due to their established histories. The reason my home server is Triumph isn't really because I like the solitude there, although that's nice, but it's first and foremost because it was the best place for my characters to have their proper names. (That, and I don't like to wear pants.)
I very much want the ability to chose whatever name I want on the server I want. It's not that I'm malicious and want to steal your names, nor because I'm less creative and can't use a thesaurus. It's because I want to play with my own character concepts from years gone by, characters I already have a vested interest in, characters who are already defined to the point that a new name often makes them a different character.
I understand people wanting, but unable to get, the special names they associate with their special characters. They all need to get over the fact that, in an environment with potentially tens of thousands of (at least) equally creative fellow players, the "first come, first served" law is the only one that's fair... and they lost out. They claim "all the good names are gone", to which I respond "apply more imagination and education". When they say "this is the best and only name for a character I've played elsewhere for years", my answer is the same.
There's more light outside the box. Folks should try it. -
Seriously though, in my four years on CoH, I've never had trouble coming up with good character names. Ever. Having something more than a dismally average vocabulary helps.
-
Actually, they're allowing anyone to choose any name, but if it's already taken, it's automatically appended with "Wannabe #X" with the X of course numerically representing just how far behind the original character you are...

Quote:Yeah, for me the coolest part of the tips is having some enemies "give up" rather than "drop dead". Would like to see more of that kinda thing filtered into the older content... at least blueside. Many of my villains don't have the scruples to care.I'd love to see stuff like that implemented some more (if this case is an intentional implementation).
Would be cool to have an arrest power or something, as opposed to just beating on them.
Neat, fluff sort of stuff to some, maybe... but that's what makes pastimes go 'round! -
Meanie, you knocked all the fireflies out of his magic armor!
