Quote:You see, Statham, Li, and Austin were never action stars when I was younger. They are the new group. As for the others, they simply never impressed me with their glut of cliched movies. The action film did become a cliche. That is why so many here enjoyed Tropic Thunder. (Never watched it myself. I really do not like that kind of movie.) Stallone says Keaton killed the action star. No, bad acting killed the action star. Laughable performances killed the action star. Seagal, Van Damne, and Lundgren killed the action star with their awful movies. In their defense, scott pilgrim does seem to be pitched far more for a younger audience, coh'ers tend to be older. thats why we remember when most of these guys were action film heroes in the expendables, and are excited.
Action movies were the attempt to make a super hero movie before we really had the technology to make good super hero movies. Now we have it. In addtion, like all action stars, they change over time. The 80's action was nothing like the stars Eastwood, Bronson, and Reynolds. And they were different from John Wayne. It simply changes over time.
The fact that Scott Pilgrim is a comic book movie, and makes references to the old NES side scrolling fighters, combined with the special effects, makes it a preferable movie aimed not only at the young comic reader, but also the older geeks. I am looking forward to seeing it in the theatre. I may not like the lead actor, but I like the idea behind the story. -
Fury works? I mean I solo misisons and never rise above 1/4 bar. I thought it was a useless power, like Blaster Defiance.

Quote:oooo Yummy. Thanks for the recipe ImpishThe most heavenly hollandaise sauce evah; from The All New Fannie Farmer Boston Cooking School Cookbook, complete and unabridged, tenth edition, 1959.
I inherited this little paperback cookbook when I married my Hubby, as his mother had given it to him (already somewhat worn) when he "left the nest". It is packed with the greatest little recipes (the index is 81 pages!), and is my most used cookbook.
So... word for word:
Put in a small heavy sauce pan or double boiler top
3 egg yolks
Beat with a wooden spoon or wire whisk until smooth but not fluffy
Add
2 tablespoons lemon juice or mild vinegar
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
2 tablespoons hot water
1/4 teaspoon salt
few grains of cayenne
Set over very low heat or over hot water and beat until the sauce begins to thicken (about 5 minutes). The sauce will be thicker as it cools. Makes about 1 cup.
Now, note that you do not put the sauce over heat until all the ingredients have been added, so have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go. Indirect heat seems to work best. I prefer lemon juice over vinegar, and butter by far over margarine. Also, 5 minutes is a long time to whisk, but it is totally worth it... the sauce comes out so light and smooth... absolute heaven.
Excellent for eggs benedict, served with tea, of course.
Also wonderful over salmon, rice, omelettes, asparagus, spinach.... I could keep going....

Quote:huzzah!!!personally given that scott pilgrim is co-written and directed by the co-writer and director of hot fuzz and shaun of the dead i'm going to go give it a view. Also, seeing as i work at b&n i've been looking at the comics during my breaks and they're fairly entertaining to me which is another good sign.
Also, given that the expendables just looks like pure awesome action i'm going to go give that one a view too.
Huzzah for actually having a weekend off for once. -
Quote:Now BBQ, the special effects alone scream big screen with Scott Pilgrim. Super hero/video game effects on the big screen. The Expendables says "explosions" to me. Thus: Big Screen.
Scott Pilgrim says "no explosions" to me. Thus: Rental.
I am not going to let myself get drawn into an anti-Expendables rant. For all I know the movie will be good. Look at the cast of the Dirty Dozen. It just screams rental to me.
I should watch Eat, Love, Pray just to be contrary, but it simply does not appeal to me even as a rental. -
Well both movies launch on the same date. That's going to require some people to make some choices. Me?
Scott Pilgrim for me.
Yeah I know you can see both films in the theatre. The point is, most likely people will only see one that weekend. Which do you choose? -
Nothing. The idea barely works with a fictional world. In a game set on Earth, you drastically lose reality. It would have to be set in all one city. After all, you can't go from Rhode Island to Montana then straight to Las Vegas. There are huge tracts of land between and many cities.
Personally, I like how we do it here. I always have prefered the zones in most games. -
Quote:I prefer that sort of food in the morning. I lost my taste for overly sweet breakfast, and I rarely eat pancakes/waffles/french toast.Doh!
Silly me, I assumed the scoop I use was a cup. Upon looking at the handle I discover it's actually 1/2 a cup so it should be 1 1/2 cups sugar.
As an aside, I can't drink tea before noon myself. It's really only good with some warm salty food to go with it.
In fact I never eat pancakes. Waffles are a rare occasion as is french toast. Give me eggs and bacon, left overs, or a sandwich. Or a breakfast burger. -
With large amounts of brewed tea or sun tea, I will use either hot tap water, or boil water so that the sugar dissolves. Once I have the sugar dissolved, I will fill the rest of the gallon container with chilled water. That way I avoid having sugar on the bottom.
I agree with many that say southern sweet tea is eww. I know it's an acquired taste, and my swigs of cola in the morning have as much sugar, but I can't drink my tea that sweet. -
None. I love music, but I hate not being able to hear the glowies when they are hidden.

Durakken, not that I think you are wrong, but can you link the source saying that Birds of Prey are linked to Smallville? I thought they had different producers.
-
I think, that with GR, both sides will see an increase in population. The Vigilante's and Rogues being able to cross to both sides and team with others will get more groups going post level 20. I know for a fact that the majority of my toons will not stay true to one side with out a pretty good reason, and a badge/accolade is not worth it.
-
Yeah, after both of our posts, so am I lol. You gave me an idea by the way. We have been debating on a mortar and pestle, but I could not think of a good use for one. Buying the peppers for chili and saving the seeds may be a good idea. That way we can dry the seeds and grind them.
For peppers, I usually use at minimum, 2 anahiem peppers, 1 bastille, and 2 serrano. I like to add the occasional habenero or chipotle pepper as well, and the occasional banana pepper. I get my peppers at the market usually, all fresh, but occasionally a friend gives me peppers from his yard. Man those are good. -
My villain groups will stay my villain groups, as will my hero groups. I am rerolling some toons and giving both sides the other half, but I am not abandoning the bases I have worked for.

Quote:You are correct. I used the generic curry powder when I did the trick. I am sure making a real curry sauce would have made a differnt taste.Well. Curry doesn't equal curry, since it's a spice mix. That said, I think curry makes most things better. As does powdered paprika.
(Oddly enough, I learned about curry being different from Azure Dreams.) -
Quote:You peel your tomatoes? *baffle*Sauce? I make a pretty heathen chili, reducing added ingredients to red onions, two to three kinds of peppers, very few beans and peeled tomatoes. Wouldn't want it to get soupy after all.
As for beans, I rarely put beans in my chili. The way I was taught was that beans have no place in chili. Other than that, it looks like our ingredients are similiar. I put:
1 lb ground chuck roast
1 lb pork suasage, (Or country sausage.)
3-5 peppers of different types
1-2 garlic cloves
1 onion
chili powder
salt
pepper
red pepper flakes
paprika
onion powder
garlic powder
the tomatoes.
I use the brown sugar, 1 handful, to mitigate the chili powder
I also put in 1 handful of masa flour.
The original recipe called for using a can of tomato sauce, I just added more tomatoes instead. Less preservatives. You cook the meat first, but save the drippings. I get very few drippings off the beef as I use a very lean meat. You sautee the onions inhalf the drippings until the they translucent. You then sautee the garlic and peppers in the rest of the drippings. Make sure to remove the seeds unless you want your chili to give you a kick.
Clearly I skipped many directions.
The tomatoes need to be chopped, as do the other ingredients. Save the tomato juice. I do this by cutting mt ingredients on a plate instead. As I said, remove the seeds from the peppers. The spices I could not give you a measure for. I simpy shake until I feel it is right. -

Quote:Oddly enough, a smidge of curry powder in burger meat works very well. I gace it an odd look when I was told, but I tried it out one day, and I was pleasantly surprised. Mustard also works well in burger meat,YES. I thought I was the only one who knew the glory of a putting a little teeny bit of garlic powder on burgers. (Works best when they're cooking, so that it can mingle with everything.) Use sharp cheddar for the cheese and you have yourself a fine burger.
Me, I like doing stuff like that to make quick-and-easy food also taste pretty good, since I both like good food and hate taking more than about 20 minutes to make it. My recent hotness is mixing seasoned steak strips with brown rice. (Also peanut butter-on-sourdough sandwiches, but I don't expect anybody else to ever want to eat that.) -

Agreed, one of my favorite sections of the CoH newspaper was the recipe section.
It's always nice to learn new recipes and new ways to cook. -
This is old news as I recall.. I will do some searching but some time ago this came up, and as was said then, most of the movie should take place in WW2 EUROPE. Of course it's cheaper to do a few American scenes on a set over there.
edit Here is one from the virtue forums.

I know there was one in the comics forums as well. -
This is important. I noticed that as well when I used to use a kettle. The water got weird, as did the odor in the kettle. The same goes with pots and pans. Wash the pot after boiling your water in it. If you do not, it will develop an odor, and start to ruin your tea.

Quote:Broiled burgers are not bad either, just need to flip them alot. I think it takes more time for a broiler to cook them than the stove top though.Erm no. Any decent cook who cooks a burger in a pan will drain the pan as it cooks. The microwave heats in an entirely different manner than the pan and plus no one really takes time to drain it, which leaves it dried out and tasteless by comparison, yet still swimming in grease.
So cooked in a pan can be healthier if your cook has an ounce of culinary skill, and will definitely taste better.
But grilled is absolutely the best way to go for burgers.
