For CoX to "utilize" all eight cores it would have to basically generate so much CPU load that it forced Windows to schedule all 8 cores, and performance would probably suffer.

CoX is actually significantly threaded; things like 3D sound and even demorecords seem to use different threads from the main compute threads. The real question is whether any version of CoX will use up more than two i7 cores' worth of computing power, even with Ultra Mode processing. If it doesn't, it really doesn't matter how many cores are in use. Two full cores of i7 power is quite a lot relative to the stated minimum system requirement. What would you use that for in terms of optional enhanced capability? Artificially intelligent veteran pets?
AI vet pets would be cool.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you seem to be stating that there's nothing the devs can do to the engine that the OS isn't already handling in order to "spread the pain" across all the cores on a proc.

Granted, my understanding of processor engineering is nonexistent, but if that's the case, why did the devs have to enable the renderthread flag so that it could use the second thread/core in the first place?

Why is it locked down to two cores as it is? Or is it? Resource Monitor is showing me that cityofheroes.exe is using 17 threads for 13% CPU utilization with most of the action appearing to happen on CPU 0 and 6 with half as much working on 2 and 4. All the odd numbered CPUs are labeled "parked" and show almost no activity at all.

Oh. I guess it doesn't matter.

  4. I don't know. I WANT to know. If CHV was suddenly able to utilize as many cores/threads as a system had access to, would we all see a performance boost?

Nope, you hit it. Was wondering if maybe the game engine could be/will be tweaked so that it utilized quadcore processors like the Intel I7.

I remember way back in the day showing that even the lowly P4 showed a performance boost when hyperthreading was turned on and the flag was set in the CHV shortcut.

Then they made usage of dualcore/threads the default so the flag wasn't needed anymore.

Now the question is, can we get the game to utilize not only the 4 real cores of quadcore procs, but all 8 virtual cores on the I7 proc?

doh. I even read that when he posted it. Which means those running quadcores and quadcores with hyperthreading will probably be left under-utilizing those as well.

I say again.A Tanker "can" match a Scrapper in Damage unless it crits.
I'll play. I enjoy shoving facts down people's throats.

Tank BA adds 9.79 damage every 2 seconds.
Cast time for chain above: 6.33 seconds
    9.79*3 = 29.37
    29.37 * (1+.8+1+.95) = 110.1357
Add that to the prior tank total = 1578.225

And what did the scrapper without ANY BUFF AT ALL from his secondary do? Oh yea, 1754.

You still lose. Your tank is weaksauce. Oh, forgot to take crits back off: 1594. You STILL lose. Unfortunately for you, BU and FE aren't EVER up 100% of the time. Which means the tanks damage falls even more. Yet scrappers critical chance is always on.

Do I really need to break it down further for you and base it on the uptime of buffs with 3 SO recharge in each? I can if you like, but all it will do is make your statements seem more foolish than they already do.

    You're only digging yourself deeper.

The compairison was a Fire/Fire Tanker vs a Fire/SD Scrapper. So if you want to go off of a AV fight you'll have to redo some of your math for both builds.
    Tanker numbers don't change.

    Tank using your chain:
    391.49 * (1+.8+1+.95)) = 1468.0875

The ONLY change to the scrapper is the removal of fiery embrace (125%) to be replaced with the buff from AAO with one enemy, the AV, in range (12.5%)

It's a HUGE difference? Who's gonna win?!?!? Oh my gosh I know what my gut is telling me after pouring over numbers for this game for the past five years... could I still be right?

Scrapper using your chain: (Changing FE's 1.125 to AAO's .125
    540.54 * (1+1+.125+.95) = 1662.1605
After 10% crit rate for AVs = 1828.37655

The scrapper does 400 more points of damage PER attack chain than the tank.

Hell, make it Fiery Melee/Super Reflexes. No buff at all from the secondary. 1754.0523. Still beats your tank.

Tank damage does not compare to scrapper/brute damage. At all. Ever.
  9. Did we ever hear whether CHV was being tweaked to utilize SLI/Crossfire? How about using multiple cores above the two threads it currently hits?

Last time I tested, there was little to no performance increases when using SLI.

Ok, this is my annoyance with the original post: Going Rogue and Issue 17 are two separate things. Issue 17 will have Ultra Mode free of any extra charge beyond the regular monthly fee.
    Correct about point one.

Don't see the reason for point two. I know that.

Different stuff. I bought all the booster packs and will continue to do so. Because I was getting X for Y.

    The choice here is:

30 bucks, no free month, early access and then another 10 bucks for the bonus pack = 40 bucks

    or

40 bucks - 15 for the free month, the bonus pack, but no early access = 25 bucks

Is early access really worth it? It is for me as explained earlier, but they should give the free month for both simply because they're getting money from me SOONER if I go early pre-order.

Those waiting would still come out on top since they'll also be getting the updated DVD. EDIT: Is that disk necessary? Not at all. I keep my game installs on a separate physical drive from my OS. It took me all of 2 minutes to have CHV reloaded when I went from XP to Win7.

They've also been put on their own costume node and will now show up under "Lower Body". Which will mean you can do a Belt and a Tail (animated or static) on the same character. Unfortunately, that means the tails under the belt category are being flagged as legacy. So if you want to keep your current, non-animated tail, you'll still need to go in and select that costume part from the lower body the next time you edit your costume at the tailor.
We get tails with belts? Long time waiting on that, BAB. Thanks to all those involved.

Brings up another question: togas with proper animated capes? Trenchcoats with animated tails?
  15. Higher than the current pathetic damage output so that I could actually tolerate playing one.

The biggest missconception is that everyone uses IOs by mid career of there characters.Which simply isnt the case.
I don't touch them unless they happen to be lucky drops until 50. Even then, I only have two characters that are fully IOed up amongst several 50s.

This discussion isn't about survivability. It's about damage output. Might a tank have enough mitigation to survive long enough to take out a spawn that a scrapper would faceplant from before his superior damage could deal with that spawn?

Perhaps. On a good day for the tank maybe.

But again, that's not what this discussion is about. It's about damage dealing and you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

    Scrapper:
    Incinerate: 156.4
    GFS: 142.64 + 80%chance of 62.55
    Scorch: 52.55 + 80%chance of 18.78
    FS: 82.58 + 80%chance of 25.04
    Total Scrap Chain Possible: 540.54

    Tank:
    Incin: 111.2
    GFS: 108.55 + 80%chance of 44.5
    Scorch: 37.37 + 80%chance of 13.35
    FS: 58.72 + 80% chance of 17.8
    Total Tank Chain Possible: 391.49

    Build Up for Scrapper: 100%
    Build Up for Tank: 80%
    Fiery Embrace for Scrapper: 125%
    Fiery Embrace for Tank: 100%

Buff from 3 damage SOs: 95%

Damage equation: Total of chain*(1+totalbuffs) = Adjusted Damage

    Scrapper using your chain:
    540.54 * (1+1+1.25+.95) = 2270.268

    Tank using your chain:
    391.49 * (1+.8+1+.95)) = 1468.0875

And that's not even considering crits. Scrappers have a 5% chance to crit against minions. A 10% chance against LTs on up.

On AVERAGE, that means the scrapper is dealing 2440.5381

That's just under 1000 more points of damage than your tank. With FOUR attacks.

Do you really want to go on believing that a fire tank can get anywhere close to what a fire scrapper is dishing out over the course of a spawn? Or a whole map?

EDIT: Why, yes, there is a reason I don't bother with tanks.

That's my question. I'm also wondering what will end up in the little bonus pack that those buying the box in April will get.

As for the whole "gift of loyalty" versus "evil scam of doom" argument, both sides need to grow the hell up.

1: It's a way to get more money in the coffers NOW. Companies like doing that. Some of us will be giving the money up NOW.

2: View it as a scam if you like. It doesn't mean you're even remotely correct. It's a business transaction. You pay, you get something. It would only be a scam if we didn't get what we paid for.

3: This has absolutely NOTHING to do with loyalty. See point 1.

I'll be getting the early pre-order. Why? Because I want to play Dual Pistols on live. Hopefully I'll get to help beta test Ultra mode with the shiny new hardware I have. If Ultra mode tanks, I'll at least have gotten to play DP for a while before I take another leave of absence.

If I'm still around to test Going Rogue and I get invited to that, I'll test away. If IT isn't worth hanging around for, last paragraph applies.

Option 1 for pre-order suits my purposes. I'm not buying it out of loyalty and they are selling it out of gratitude. No scam involved from either side.
  21. Considering that the DP set damn near forces you into melee...
  22. Dual Pistols/SR scrappers

  24. To be honest, I haven't loaded up my SM/WP in quite a while. I know he's slotted with nothing but two perf shifter chance for +ends and basic lvl 50 IOs. But I don't think I took a PPP on him at all. As it stands, I can run his end down to 0 after two spawns. I'll look into Mu.
