  1. I'll probably post this in tutorials pretty soon, but I'd like to make sure it works for everyone, and receive any input on if it can be improved first. My MM is a Thugz MM, and I'm using South Park names: Cook, Timmy, Stan, Kyle, Eric, and Kenny. This requires two macros (or binds). The slash commands are:

    clear_petnames

    and

    petselect_name Bruiser$$petrename Cook$$petselect_name Enforcers 1$$petrename Timmy$$petselect_name Enforcers 2$$petrename Stan$$petselect_name Punk 1$$petrename Kyle$$petselect_name Punk 2$$petrename Eric$$petselect_name Arsonist$$petrename Kenny

Insofar as I've tested it, hitting these two macros will fix the "arsonist changes name" bug. It'll probably also work for Demon MM's with some modification, since their renaming issues are even crazier.
  2. It used to be worse. The pets didn't follow you in at all.

Maybe if the technology in question is something unique or wildly out of the ordinary, that is what denotes a tech hero. So, Iron Man and War Machine (and Black Scorpion) are tech characters, because they use outlandish tech that's not available to most people. But an SoA or an assault rifle/DP blaster could still be natural, because the technology they're using is pretty run of the mill.

Which still puts Batman in a grey area, but oh well.

edit: also, the fantastic four were all pretty obvious science origins.
This is what I'm starting to think. Maybe Arachnos armor is considered so ordinary/run-of-the-mill in the Paragon City world that it isn't sci-fi enough to deserve tech status? It just takes getting a sense of what is and is not "super tech", when we're dealing with a reality different from the real world. Just having a jet pack might make you a "tech" hero in our world, but a lot of Talon agents and Longbow use jet packs.

On the other hand, what if your Arachnos soldier takes teleportation as their travel power? That's gotta be pretty high tech.
  4. When you get him to level 38, could you come back and tell us if the Demons blow up like Zombies/Bots, or like Thugs/Ninjas/Merks?

Please, please, please???? I've been dying to know.

Oh no! Now I'll never decide!

Maybe I should give up, and do something radically different, like science. (Definitely would require a change of story line, but still....)

If a character is just using technology that they got from somewhere, I'm a lot more inclined to call them natural origin, particularly if the tech involved is fairly ordinary (as most of the stuff SoAs use supposedly is.)
What do you do with Rhody/"War Machine" then?
  8. I have entertained the possibility of having them be some kind of Japanese robotics project, since a lot of Japanese companies are really into building human looking robots. It fits my theme slightly better if at least the Jounin remain human. (I'll actually be skipping Genin, as taboo a choice as that is.)
  9. If they can't fix the AI, couldn't they at least make the melee attacks have a longer recharge? If my merks could only punch you once per minute, then they would only attempt to punch you once per minute.

Same goes for ninjas, but the reverse. Why not make their shuriken a minute long recharge?

The only ones I can think of offhand that don't get too close are mook/marcone hitmen, who still run to extreme range and snipe.
I've totally got to cry "no fair!!" on that. They've got time to get a Marcone Hitman's AI dialed in right, but merks, who are a much more prominent player experience, are left running around like idiots?

It probably helps that the Marcone has no punch attack at all, though.
  10. Even when she enhances her ninjas, I still picture her giving them nifty tools to use, like laser sharpened swords, or custom tabi boots. I'm sure the ninjas themselves would prefer some super healthy food, but that's not what she's adding to them by being their leader.

    That is a good criteria!

Batman would probably go super-healthy food rather than the other. (Not that the other is no use to him, just less important.) I kind of picture my character eating junk food or expensive food like caviar, then hitting the Dojo a few times a week to work off the carbs.

This is definitely starting to lean toward tech. Do think it's ok for a tech character to still have some mad skills? I mean, she's not too bad of a ninja. Doesn't have any martial arts attacks outside of prestige sands-of-mu, but still....

The way I have her right now, I want to say she made them. She's a force of modernization in her clan.

Right now, her back story is that she was attending MIT in the USA and suddenly started taking interest in the ways of the Ninja one day (but she never had before), so her father arranged for her to get arrested on false charges, sent to the Zigg, and broken out by Arachnos so she could prove herself on the Rogue Isles, and maybe earn the respect of the clan, so they'd allow her to be his successor.

Only trouble is... she still has real ninja skills, just not quite as well developed as her henchmen.
  13. I'll most likely choose Mace Mastery as my Patron pool too.
  14. I'm making a Ninjas/Force Field Mastermind. She's the daughter of a powerful Shogun, and that's why ninjas follow her around, as well as an Oni. She has basic ninja skills like stealth, but uses rocket boots to fly, and force field generators to put force fields on her teammates. I can't decide whether she should be natural or technology?

I've been looking for advice pretty much anywhere I can find it. I know Batman has some nifty gadgets, and he's natural, but do you think a force field generator would fit into that category, or is it high tech enough to deserve its own classification?

Her power pools are: Fitness, Concealment, Medicine, and Flight.

True. Somehow it just bugs me if I get it wrong. An Arachnos soldier doesn't give you any choice anyway...... so maybe it's best I just let it go.

I'm trying to understand what the naming conventions are in the Paragon City world, so I can make sure my character's story is consistent with all the signature characters, enemy groups, and etc.
  16. It seems like technology origin starts when you surpass the Paragon City world's concept of a "gadget". Like, Batman has military grade high tech weapons, but nothing that exceeds the technological capacity of his time (or at least not by much.)

So, one needs to have an idea of what is "advanced" in Paragon City. Half the weapons and tools we see Long Bow or an Arachnos Crab use are surely beyond what's technologically feasible in the real world today, but I guess they're just "gadgets" to them.

I'm just at a loss for what I should call a "tech origin"....
  17. Do you think the mere ability to generate force fields is enough to justify a technology origin, or would a force field generator be "gadget" tech in the Paragon City world?

I know Batman doesn't have one, but the Sky Raiders have them.

In the end, though, it's really your call, as you are the one making and playing the character.

So, what would you say about Ken and Ryu (In Street Fighter series) throwing their "Hadukens" around? Does that step outside the bounds of them being natural heroes, and make them magic heroes?

Hmmm. Interesting way to look at it. I'm thinking tech for the force fields and flight, but maybe her Force Bolt attack is a"Haduken" type ninja skill. (I might justify the force fields in some crazy way like that too, as a special martial arts-ish ability.)

The ninjas and oni follow her simply because she's the daughter of the Shogun, or because she's friends with them. (I'll make sure she does Darrin Wade's Arc before level 26, so she can rescue an Oni from the Lost.)
  19. I would say to take it with a primary that has a damage aura, like Dark, Fire, Ice.... or maybe Stone. The reason is that it has a lot of slow recharge powers, and you don't get any AOE attacks until level 28. Your axe attacks also use a lot of end, so it's nice to be able to just stand there and let your aura continue damaging your foes while you wait for your endurance to replenish.

If you want your tank to be a tough tank, you need to mostly be taking defensive powers, so you don't have room for a full attack chain of Axe attacks. My level 28 Ice/Axe tank right now can solo block mobs that are very scary in size and scope, but I've only taken 3 Axe attacks so far. (The first two, and the level 28 AOE). I let the Icicles in my damage aura do most of the killing for me, and just use my axe attacks to knock down the strongest mobs before they can damage me.

Positional and typed defenses used to be either/or, but they aren't anymore. All the IO bonuses contain both.
    .
I wouldn't put it all on Ranged then, because of attacks are AOE's as well. I guess the single target ranged are more dangerous to a tank, though because of aggro.
  21. The thing is I want to think of her as having some ninjitsu skills. Like, maybe not super good at it, but at least mildly ninja trained. But, the force fields, the rocket boots, and the medical gear seem to imply technology.

I don't know. There's both training and tech present here. Which do I call the origin?

If I could change origins later, I wouldn't care, but I can't. Have to get these kinds of decisions right from the start, because there's no going back.
  22. So, does that mean they can't be slowed either? Like if a Lost Anathema hits them with his psi powers, the -Recharge effect won't slow down their attack rates?

Sure our Soldiers wear armor, brandish weapons, etc but they HAVE to because aside from the physical training they go through to toughen them its all they have. Golden Roller and Positron cover the Technology briefs during those talk to missions. When you come down to it an SoA sort of combines a little tech (armor and weapons), some Science (Serum), and Natural (conditioning) so as you mentioned your a lot like an evil Batman LOL Years of training your body to be in peak condition and as the Joker put it "Where does he get all those fabulous toys?"
This is very helpful. It definitely highlights the distinction I'm having a hard time with.

Now the one that sort of stumps me is, and I may be wrong, but Widows are considered natural too I think. Considering a Widow can become a Fortunata with Telekentic and Psychic attacks it seems more like they'd be Mutants like Sister Psyche on the Hero side. Night Widows have less of these powers but even they have attacks available that do PSI damage. My guess here is like the Warshades and Peacebringers hero side they wanted BOTH to have the same origin so the Soldier origin won out since obviously they have no mutant powers.
Interestingly enough, Warshades are science. But all the other EATs are natural. (Including Widows)

As several guides on the board describe, though, that doesn't mean you can't take Bane POWERS, you just don't call yourself a Bane, you call yourself a Wolf, and concentrate on your base powers instead of the Bane tree.

Of course, taking ANY Crab powers gives you the backpack, so I would say conceptually a Huntsman cannot take any Crab powers.

My main SoA, however, is a female Crab Spider named Arachnophelia. It's a codename, and really the concept that I developed the whole character around. She's obsessed with spiders, almost to the point of a fetish, which is why she joined Arachnos. She really wants to actually be a spider. I just decided the "Operative" label didn't fit with that name.

Although I've never used them, I would guess "Webmaster" would be an effective title for a Crab Spider, while "Commando", or "Executioner" would be for Bane Spiders. I believe I've also seen "Seer" for Fortunatas.
So is there a title that corresponds with Banes or Crabs?

Also, what if it's a female? Would "Huntsman" change to "Huntsmistress" or something like that? "Huntswoman"?
  25. Cause they use power armor and stuff. It's driving me crazy because it throws off my whole notion of what is natural and what is tech. I can't figure out how to draw the lines anymore.

I can see how a soldier's training probably matters more than their gadgets. That's kind of like Batman. He's got nice toys, but at the core he's a ninja master of some kind.

    *mild movie spoiler alert*!!!

At the same time.... what is tech then? Does your character have to be a robot entirely? Is Tony Stark tech? What about Rhodey, his new sidekick? Rhodey didn't invent any power armor, and he's definitely a trained soldier.
