This mechanic of three NPCs, you kill two and the third one kills you; you respawn at start of mish and have to fight the same three NPCs ALL OVER AGAIN until you manage to defeat all three is a simply exhausting mechanic, and one that sucks a great deal of what fun there is out of Champions Online.
Its just drudgery. -
Quote:To be honest, a fair amount of Kins WERE drive-by trolling. Null the Gull was perhaps the most welcome sight I've ever seen in this game: one bird, nullifying a million intrusions into other's gameplay.I think she means places like Russia.
Oh. You're one of those people that think that all of us Kins are trying to troll you. No wonder you're so negative!
Back on topic: hurry up with that emulator. -
Quote:Since long ago I moved all my people to Virtue, for ostensibly other reasons but with the current situation tucked firmly in the back of my mind, it would not matter a bit to me....Would you care?
Let's assume somehow your character miraculously remained, unharmed along with the servers.
I am honestly astounded that the game is being closed without even a hint of a prior server-merge. Dont bother condensing the population, just shut the whole thing down!! In what universe does that even make sense?!!
I would play this game even if I could keep only the slots on one server, or even only a few slots on one server, although winnowing down my alts to say, 5, would be an agony that kept me up nights.
But we're not even going to get that. This whole situation has been a nightmare for me. Losing my alts is traumatising me. I know I am not alone in that, it just amazes me how upset and angry I am about the whole %$#*ing UNNECESSARY MESS, two months later. Its like Nevil Shute's "On the Beach" in an MMO. Where will my characters be when the final light goes out?! They dont even get a cyanide pill. *puts head in hands* -
Quote:Minor thread derail:But either way it seems a bit odd to do that. If it was evil to do it to us, with refunds, it is surely evil to do it to them without refunds. Yet I think one importance difference is that Blizzard probably didnt have much say in the matter, compared to NCSoft.
The original thought was that Iran had blocked access because WoW features scantily-clad female avatars, and we cant have teh mens all hot-n'-bothered by a bunch of pixels, nosirree. Jihad has been declared for less.
This went on and on until Blizzard actually admitted that they had pulled the plug in compliance with US sanctions. And no.... they were *not* offering refunds, to refund money would have been to break current US law.
With that said, someone please hurry up with the CoX emulator already. -
Quote:Nope. Its "we are villians, and what's ours is ours."Apparently the new motto for the community is:
"We are heroes. We don't give a sh*t if it's illegal."
I would be on an emulator in a blue streak.
Was reading an article the other day about Blizzard locking everyone in Iran out of WoW WITH NO REFUNDS, due to US sanctions [and hahahaha on that one, brilliant!] and someone in the comments section said that a development house just ripping away characters that people have given real-time time and effort to, was just EVIL.
Good point, although admittedly I don't care much about what happens to the hostile forces in the Persian Gulf area. But NCSoft ripping *our* stuff away with no reaon nor warning is in fact, evil.
Got no problem dodging that bullet if possible. If NCSoft does not like that, they can modify their behavior. -
Day 3 in Champions: rerolled my new alt, logged out and logged back in and my new costume pieces were unlocked. I"ll pick up more costume stuff next payday.
Stuff they have that CoX needed: necklaces. Headpieces, forehead decorations, and headwear being THREE SEPARATE CATEGORIES. They have more of just about everything but auras and capes. Better sliders than CoX has. White skin is truly WHITE, bone-white, whiter than a ghost. Like it.
Went through the tutorial again, did much better. Black Talon only killed me twice this time, as opposed to the 50 times he killed me on my test alt. [Hyperbole.... but not much.] Thank God that Defender guy was in there helping me or I would have been toast. Maybe next time I will skip it. Sapphire is still bugged.
People less rude to each other in Broadcast today.
So things are going better. I cannot stifle a fear that no sooner will I get comfortable over there, then that game will get shut down too. But things a little better today. -
Well, I got my test alt to 10, deleted and re-rolled. The costume options then became visible.
Not allowing new players to at least SEE the full range of costume options when creating their first character is perhaps the stupidest game mechanic I have ever seen. I say that after quite a bit of thought.
The stupidest, most shoot-yourself-in-the-foot-ish, dumber than a bag of hammers thing I have ever seen in an MMO. There. I said it.
Now if I could just get access to the costume parts I just paid for, but that's another issue. -
Quote:I'm just shy of level 10 and perhaps I am "doing it wrong" somehow, but it seems like block does not do a whole hell of a lot for me. Maybe I will learn how to block "better" as time goes on, however right now its a very, very uphill fight, involving a hell of a lot of death.Really ? You don't block and you die? I have 3 lvl 40 characters and the only istance when I blocked an attack was in the old tutorial when there was a quest that requested you to block to go on.Aside that if you stand idle your character will autoblock for you, you have a better chance of survival if you attack forgeting about blocking.
The instant I ding 10 that toon will be deleted and replaced with something else. I am also amused by the fact that at least one of my "ranged" powers seems to require me to be in melee range to do the most damage. Lawl.
Quote:By the way there are healing and temporary invulnerability powers that work way better than blocking
I dont actually expect you to break these questions down, but just as a few examples of the mountainously steep learning-curve Champions Online represents to the unfamiliar. -
Quote:I know you are infuriated with me for daring to state in another thread that I am pro-choice. Please hold while I prove my prior point:
People like you are just looking for things to complain about. You're dead set on trashing Champs. Please hold while you prove my point.
Quote:Oh yeah, they're so snarky. What kind of jerks would set up a sticky thread in their forums and create several channels, plus plan a welcome to CO event for the day after COH closes!? These people sound like condescending jerks! And how dare they have the audacity to answer all COH player's questions with several pages of responses on their boards, while veteran CO players give assistance in game via channels! Man, those CO players. I don't know how they could have the nerve to go around, not insulting our graphics or our community. We can't let em get away with it!
2. I have yet to see "veteran Co players giving assistance in game via channels." What I did see was a bunch of snark along the lines of "OMG here they come, the game is ruined!!!" Not to mention a lot of disdain for free players - unfortunately, I am not paying for anything until I see how well I like the game. Adorable. Makes me want to play, let me tell you.
I will join the CoX channel there. However it still seems that most people in-game do not want CoX migrants. Which is their loss, but whatever.
3. You're a condescending jerk. I'd ask you to post your CO global so that those so minded could make a point of avoiding you in-game, but I am sure your sunny and helpful attitude would make you stand out in a crowd.
4. " Champions has better graphics than COH."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAAAAA!!!!
Have a nice day.

Bad. -
Nope, sorry guy, I never saw any dialog boxes to close. These must be dialog boxes along the lines of those that appear during itrials: so small and insignificant that the simply are not getting noticed. Why in hell's bells would I decide to close dialog boxes and ~then~ come HERE complaining? That makes no sense whatever.
Anyways, speaking generally I am now level 9+ and things are going a bit better.
1. They call CoX dated looking?!!!! CO looks like something done on an Etch-a Sketch, and thats with the outlines turned off. The water effects are a true LOL. Capes: LOL.
2. In-game community seems very snarky and unwelcoming. They *know* we are coming there, and its totally "OMG N00BS." People asking for help in Broadcast are either ignored or mocked.
Not me, because I have not dared to open my mouth, given the general mood. But I don't feel very welcome regardless, knowing that is how people feel. Perhaps I will just minimize my chatbox and concentrate on killing stuff for a while. -
Quote:I dont agree with much of what Butane says, but this right here is pretty much a spot-on assessment. There seems to me to be a strong element of just plain spite in the mix.Yeah, but you know, spite and all. They have to salt the earth just be be sure someone else doesn't pick up CoH and profit off it. That would be embarrassing to NCSoft. Saving face before reason; that's more important to them than alienating western customers because they don't really care if we never touch another NC game.
-
Quote:I never saw any dialog after zoning my new character in, except a prompt telling me to go talk to Mayor Somebody. I got pretty much no direction after that; I had no idea that in order to get out of the zone, you have to do all missions from all contacts in there.Huh?
That's so weird that people are saying it does not teach you anything and that you get lost in the tutorial. A dialog should have appeared on the upper left when you first entered, then when you attack your first enemy, and on the right to show you missions(even has a 3d compass to help you find your way)
However my test alt is *still* toting around a cat-carrier with a kitty named Reggie in it, so perhaps that is not entirely true.... but just sayin'.
Quote:When you finish the tutorial you end up at the powerhouse. They actually added new things via the trainers to explain in text, visuals, and speech how game mechanics function.
Quote:Is all of this being ignored? I figure if someone wants to know how to play a game, they will jump on every piece of information that is given to them. I see things that say the contrary. It's like people go into it wanting to quit already and just ignore dialogs that are generally hard to miss.
I am trying hard to get used to CO. I'm trying. It does not seem all that user-friendly so far, but I am giving it a chance. I think I am just going to street-sweep for a while until I get a better feel for things. I am avoiding CoX right now because every time I log in tears come to my eyes. I need to stay busy doing something else. -
At the risk of sounding ignorant, I will ask: what the hell is that, even? Where is it? I dont even know where that is.....
This game gives you NO basic tutorial. I looked around on their forums, and every tutorial I can find is about crunching high-level numbers or what have you - there is nothing for people coming in on the ground floor, who don't know anything.
The only thing I remember being told about in the "tutorial" was blocking. That is NOT MUCH. they don't tell you how to level up, I was in the tutorial and had no idea how to get out, or even when that would happen.
Perhaps I am spoiled: in CoX the tutorial spits you out in front of a trainer, and tells you to go talk to them. I was level 5, running around the beginner zone wondering Who do I talk to, to level!?
Turns out you DONT level in there, but a little info would have been nice so people know what to do next. I am aware that all this makes me sound of small intelligence, but many of us without a lot of non-CoX MMO experience are doing a bit of flailing, I think. -
I hear you haveto get to level 10 for that stuff, true enough so Test will get to level ten and then I'll delete and re-roll.
if I GET to level ten. Despite my best efforts, I die and die and die and die and die and die yet again. Attempting to block seems to do nothing whatever, and every time I die my opponent regens to full health. Not to mention my endurance bar regens to only just over half full, even just standing around much less fighting - and I have no idea how to fix this. I just dont have the sheer endurance to take on bosses just now. 5 hits and I am out of blue bar and dead.
Discouraging so far. -
..... Just got my test character out of the tutorial - which in CO, is a first for me you can believe, I was doing good to get out of there, as you are given almost no direction! And Sapphire is bugged to hell and back again.... and I'm SLOWLY flying here and there out in the actual City, looking at stuff when someone posts in Broadcast:
"OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! !!!! HOW DO YOU PEOPLE STAND THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
....to general zone hilarity.
CO: a sharp stick.
CoX: a phased plasma pulse-rifle.
And there you have it. My general response to CO is "UGH!" but CO is the only game in town, so I will try to make it work. Having to use the same face as everyone else makes me a sad panda, and thier costume creator SUCKS. Plus, there's almost nothing in it.... but when life gives you lemons and all that.
When life gives you lemons, you got a LEMON and that lemon is called Champions Online. *sigh* Somebody, save us from all this! We need a new game comparable to CoX! -
Quote:Frainkly, NCSoft is the laughing-stock of the entire MMO world, right now.Selling CoH for any amount of money, short of hundreds of millions, makes no sense for NCSoft. Imagine this: Someone buys the game, and makes it 2, 3, or even 4 times as successful as it was before (dollar-wise, anyway). That would be damned embarrassing. They'd be the laughing stock of the MMO world.
This entire debacle has been handled so badly, I wouldn't be surprised to hear it was engineered by the 10 to 12-year old children of the executives involved, much less by business-degree'd adults.
Shameful and sorry, is what I call it.
I don't actully *believe* the eighty million dollar thing, but Ifind it TOTALLY PLAUSIBLE. They would turn down a billion dollars for this game. -
Quote:NCSoft feels "sentimental" as they rip away our stables of beloved alts....? Are you serious? The only "sentiment" they can lay claim to is "Yeah we're getting money, but NOT ENOUGH MONEY. Screw all those people.""Once again, we will be holding events throughout the process of preparing for the game's end, and we encourage players and fans of the franchise to join forces and enjoy their time in a game that we've enjoyed supporting for more than eight years."
Sounds pretty sentimental to me. Again, no mention at all of any of the hard financial facts that you say drove their decision making. For all we know, someone in a boardroom tossed a coin or pulled a name out of a hat.
I say we let OUR sentiments be known by leaving their "held events" empty of participants. I have no intention of letting bygones be bygones, of saying "Oh, YOU! So sentimental! I know this game is close to your hearts, here let me participate in your event as you refuse to negotiate to save our beloved game! Its all good."
OH HELL NO IT ISNT. Rip the game away from me - but STOP LYING about intentions. I'd respect "We're just taking it, get ready to roll over b!tches" more. Of course, I AM villain-centric. If you're going to be a villain be a good one, NCSoft. -
Quote:We *don't* trust them. The problem is that ANY creating house will shutter one of their games, any time they feel like it. Its not like you can go from an NCSoft game to any other, secure in the knowledge that the rug will never be pulled out from under you.How can anyone ever trust and play NCsoft games knowing they will just shut the game down at any time. I will never play any NCsoft games.... come to think of it i dont play any other NCsoft games. Everyone should boycott NCsoft and show them who really owns them. They are nothing without us giving them money. They dont care about us the gamers so ** them. Dont buy or spend money on any of there games.
Not defending NCSoft's decision in the slightest, believe me. But its not like they are the only ones doing this.
With that said, I wish companies everywhere would exhibit a little more sensitivity toward the feelings of fans who have lived a second life in their games for literally years. To them its a 'business decision," to us its an eviction notice on top of having all our pets put to sleep with no hope of reprieve. Its kind of a big deal [understatement], and I think that totally escapes them. -
Quote:*hangs head in shame*This is not on your list but I am going to suggest it anyway.
Guildwars2.
Yes, the publisher is NCSOFT, but the game is outstanding.
Beautiful graphics, wonderful stories...lots of things to do...
And I, the person who soloed my whole way through City Of Heroes, is finding doing Hearts with others is a whole lot of fun.
Read up on it on the Internet, watch a couple of the zillion of videos that are out there.
Only fly in the ointment is NCSOFT, but, if this game, Guildwars2, is the new focus and direction they are taking, then it might be around a while.
Lisa.
I admit that I might be there as well. Having seen tutorials on YouTube, this looks like a game I could eventually master, as I did CoX. Its not too hard to play, your viewpoint does not swing around wildly as it does in DCUOnline. [Love that game, but does it make me motion-sick....YES]
I think I could make my hero and villain mains over there.
The graphics contain echoes of CoX. Something about the game-world reminds me of CoX. And at this point....
Am also about to give CO another try, but I think mechanics will prevent me from becoming truly entrenched there. Kill-stealing is rampant, and other people have the ability to silence YOU in chat for days on end, for such stuff as not being an ERPer, for having a costume they dont like or.... just 'cause they feel like it - evidently there's a substantial subset of players there who get off on doing this. Will give it a shot, but my patience with that kind of crap is short.
From what I hear, there are people who will camp a zone all day so they can swoop in and take your objective. F***. That. Noise.
Therefore I have a feeling GW2 is going to be it. And I hate that, but right now nothing else beckons. -
St. Martial, now and forever. In sight of the bright lights. I'm gonna miss St. Martial so much.
-
I am as hopeful as anyone that somehow our efforts will magically mean that CoX isn't coming to an end; I would party as hard as anyone on hearing we are NOT about to lose everything - however, I am a realist.
Underhanded slurs such as "They take what they get, do what they're supposed to do and move along the supplied paths, fitting their own interests and oddities between the cracks of society's demands when and where they can" are not changing the REALITY of the fact that NCSoft holds all the cards, and it looks like they own the dealer too.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light all you want. I'm raging too. I realize that NCSoft is gonna pull the plug any time they want, though, and that realization does not mean I'm some lockstepping drone afraid to step outside the path of what some corporation wants.
It means I'm an adult who knows reality when I see it.
Meanwhile I continue the fight to find somewhere to recreate my hero and villain mains; they must live on even if this game dies. I wil accept nothing else. -
Quote:We have several people who say something similar, anytime someone makes a comment about the End Times on the Virtue "Help" channel. Its a nice sentiment, but unfortunately we cannot alter reality by mere force of will. I wish we could, but we can't.The odds have been defied before. History teaches us this. We can defy the odds again!
Will it be easy? No.
Will NCSoft put as many obstacles in our way as they can? Likely.
Will we give it our best shot? The correct answer is YES!
NCSoft IS going to take our stuff away from us. Just because.... well, because they can. We none of us like it, but that does not hinder their power to take it in the slightest.
As someone said in another thread, I am also looking over that vast Bermuda Triangle of dodgy MMOs and thinking over which sinking ship I want to jump to next. And my having to do this isnt exactly endearing NCSoft to me, either.
I am resigned. If I can be, I will be there on Nov 30 when the lights go out. I will sporadically play till then. But they keep talking about spnsoring sunset events, and you know what? I am not really interested in an event sponsored by NCSoft. S**** them. They're taking away my stable of characters I have loved and labored over and spent money on, FOR YEARS. Don't do me any favors, you vultures. You're taking my beloved characters and **** you and the Boobs and Soul hoss you rode IN on. -
Disgusted, but NOT surprised.
Also disgusted by crap like "City of Heroes has a special place in all of our hearts." Wow, I wonder how they treat things they hate, then. To even spout such dreck to us shows how stupid they think we all really are. I'd respect them more if they came straight out and said "**** all of you."
Because that is what actually happened. Don't sugarcoat it. -
Soy you have cancer and you have a few months to live. Bummer. Your life is being sunsetted.
Why bother fighting? I mean....why? that cancer might just come back again. And then what good will all your fighting do? Far better to just roll over, look at the wall and wait for death.
Quote:Ah, so all this is because you are BORED. Good to know; now please go back over to WoW or whatever it is you play now, content that you are superior to everyone in the City. That however doesn't mean that I won't get bored and push you fools into doing something that could be totally awesome... and that is not to save a 8 year old game with a hacked apart engine. And if nothing else at least 1 person saw what the right strategy is to do that which could change so much.
Generally speaking, one thing that greatly amuses me when reading the responses to our efforts, is the supposition by WoW players that their game is somewhow superior and they will never face a sunset. *splutter* yeah right "CoH is old, it needs a sunset. WoW is great!" as if WoW isn't even older than this game. -
