Oh, no. Villains are good, too. I was actually thinking about MMs recently. My first villain 50 was a thugs/poison, and I still enjoy playing her quite a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. xD

  4. Werner's story is almost identical to mine, only his is funnier.

Manti ended up being my first truly solo AV, and I was able to get through a few of the AVs in the last mish (solo at first then with the hostages' help after I freed a few), then some idiot Hero aggroed Ghost widow while I was fighting someone else and all my "allies" ate it. Best part was, I wasn't intentionally running it on invincible; I just forgot to change my difficulty and was like "meh, I'll just tough it out."
  5. Every once in a very great while, I get a toon locked into the "flailing and falling" animation while using SJ. So my character is jumping all around with his/her arms and legs flailing all over. Soooo awesome. I'd drop $10 on a booster pack that would make that a permanent option. It makes me think of The Greatest American Hero.

Which isn't meant to demean scrappers; they're quite fun and fairly useful. I know many people will disagree, but the SR set makes my pants tight. It's all like zooooooooom!dodgedodge!zooooooom!die!
  7. Here's the thing. I'm rapidly approaching my 4 year vet mark on my main account. I also maintain a two-year-old account. My first 50 took a little over 9 months, and before crafting badges came out, I was in the top 50 for badges on Justice. I basically taken every approach to play style from solo grinding a fire/fire tank to 40 during i6 and intensive badging to multi-box farming and marketeering. It's all more than a little stale, now. Lately, I've been rolling more or less random set combos, bumping around zones, and running contact missions, and it's been pretty fun.

    "So what," you rightfully ask:

Who has some suggestions for builds that might have no merits outside of just being fun to play? It doesn't have to be an able Farmer, a PvP fotm, or big on DPS. It doesn't need to lend itself to crazy builds, heavy proc muling, or perma-anything. Of course, a toon can be fun and be any of these things, so really any suggestions are fine, but the main criterea is "Fun to play," not "leet." (or really even "useful")

I'll jump in in a bit with a few ideas as I come up with them. I'm really looking more for discussion than advice, but if someone suggests something that works for me, I might express my gratitude with some villain schwag (preferably on Justice).
  8. I'm sure this is a paraphrase of several posts so far, but here's my 0.02. I'm not trying to sneakily call anyone out, here:

I find long-time players who cling to rigid play styles far, far more annoying than new players who simply don't understand how things work out of sheer inexperience. People lording their vet badges or the fact they were in the CoH beta as some kind of symbol of their deeper understanding of or special entitlement to the game irritate me far, far more than a dozen blind invites to AE farms ever could. New players will always be able to overcome inexperience, but plain obliviousness in more veteran player is more likely to linger. Offending the delicate sensibilities of players because you don't understand the etiquette and culture of the game or server is far more tolerable than the small number of insufferable veteran twits with their inflated sense of entitlement. And don't even get me started about the difference in new/old players and starting and perpetuating ******** drama. Not many new players on trial accounts baiting people with accusations of elitism or power trips over channel migrations, now are there?

It's not a very professional saying, but I'm often reminded of the saying, "Ignorance can be cured, but stupid lasts forever."

First and foremost, WB Philly. If you need any help getting restarted after the fire sale you had when you left, let me know.

    tl;dr for HellSimian

There are no grammatical errors in the post that matter in a game's forum. The most flagrant, strictly prescriptive error is "a lot," use of which is more an error of diction. In casual settings no properly trained editor or other grammarian would fault its use. Just as no properly trained editor or other grammarian would allow it to stand in academic or professional writing. I tend to view words like "unsubbed" as new coinages, and I've seen many instances of abbreviation-turned-word in casual, scholarly, and professional discussions: you should feel free to make up words, so long as the new words' meanings are fairly clear to your audience.

I'd argue that the name of the game, City of Heroes or City of Villains, would be italicized, since those are the names of the major work, and Going Rogue would simply be placed in quotation marks since it is more like hte title of a smaller part of the work: it's more like a chapter than it is like a book; more like an episode than like a series.

A closer look reveals a few more things that I'd not worry over in casual settings: "Aug 15th" should maybe have a period after the abbreviation; "Rouge" is actually Rogue, but my spelling and typing suck, too; "Oh, and WB!" this comma might not be necessary, but I generally have to look up comma issues to be sure. It may be separating an exclamation, "Oh," from the rest of the sentence; it's certainly not separating two independent clauses: "WB" could be thought of as an abbreviated independent clause since "welcome back" has the implied subject "you." Without looking it up, I'm inclined to keep the comma because the sentence looks a little hinkey without it (the smell test).

As for spelling grammar wrong...your awn you're oan.

*I didn't consulte CMoS, Bedford, or APA for this, but I can cite pages if it would help: I'm within arm's reach of Chicago, APA, and three grammar handbooks. None of the American grammar handbooks or style guides says anything substantially different about grammar, punctuation, or usage. The style guides--APA, Chicago Manual of Style, and MLA--differ primarily on issues of formatting and citaton. I've spent a good deal of time reading them, cross-referencing answers from them, and tutoring young accolytes in their arcane lore. It gives me little joy that this knowledge will likely haunt me forever.

When in doubt, you can contact http://www.uwf.edu/writelab/grammar/ and have someone whose job it is look it up for you.

    Social Skill's

An old bio I tried to get published on my last job's departmental website. Needless to say, it underwent *heavy* editing before being upped there. Here's a slightly updated version:

Ba'alat is a deviant and a scoundrel. Born in Oxford, UK, he soon moved to the Florida Panhandle, where he was the only child in his kindergarten class with an English accent. He is a graduate of <omited> High School and the University of West Florida as well as an unrepentant graduate-school dropout. Slingpin has worked in a dizzying number of jobs, including bartender, beer bottler, store manager, warehouse drone, ice cream girl, lawn boy, dish washer, fiberglass-insulation hanger, educational-material writer, record-store clerk, tobacconist, semi-suicidal saw monkey, grammar and writing tutor (where he was the cruel and heartless overlord of both the online writing lab (OWL) and the Grammar Hotline, a nationally known language research service), and most recently hate-filled office assistant at a major U.S. University. Currently, Ba'alat is entering his last year of graduate school and will receive an Master of Arts in Teaching in early 2010. He will commence "shaping the minds" of youth in August of next year. In his spare time, Ba'alat enjoys juggling, starting small fires, and video games. His interests are broad and divergent, ranging from linguistic syntax and the deeper secrets of prepositions to ancient cults and unnamed gods. His intellectual curiosity makes him a compulsive question answerer, though his sloth leads to great and often fanciful speculation. He has an overdeveloped sense of irony.

    Trick question. Lemmy is God
  18. RV seems to be the busiest zone for quite a while now. Zone PvP is different from arena dueling, but if you have a taste for it, it's pretty fun--win or lose.
  19. Yeah. It was in my sig for a while (it might still be). It was the highest misbid people in the market forum could remember but it got topped in about 10 days.

I carefully scanned through my album before uploading...I seem to recall stories of posts' linking to albums with....shall we say "private" pix...
  20. Noticed this little nugget of info on the updater:

Not sure if this is old news to the community in general, but I've not heard anything about it.
  21. Nice time.

I really like your UI layout and window color as well. Mind giving me the color slider %s sometime?
  22. Here's an interesting twist: While the announcement says all servers will be taken down at 7:00 Pacific (10:00 Easterm), west coast servers have been down since at least 8:30 Eastern (east coast servers are still up), and of course, the server status page shows all are up (after amybe 40 refreshes).

Nice when downtime announcements, server status page and actual server status are all three at odds with one another.
