ATs, Sets, and Builds for Fun
My very first character I ever made, who is also my first 50 and by far the most played character on my account is my Energy/Energy blaster and namesake. He is the most fun character that I have played so far because I love knockback, I love that all my primary powers can do knockback. The secondary has a variety of possible paths, from blapper to utility powers focused and all work well with the primary. I, personally, have not found a more fun build and played right I have never felt more powerful than throwing a room full of enemies around at a whim.
50s: Anaxagoras - En/En/For Blaster, Vicious Kittie - Claws/SR Scrapper, Rad. Therapy - Emp/Rad/For Defender, Anaximander - En/En/Mu Brute, Marble Vanguard - Stone/EM Tanker
Current: Vitriolic - 42 Bots/Poison MM, Aseity - 38 DB/WP Scrapper, Tai Shar - 42 Earth/Storm
I'm probably the only one to be entertained by it, but the concept of an old-fashioned "telekinesis" character through a Mind Control / Force Fields Controller.
Or, the old stand-by: anything involving Storm.
Lately I've been seeing Fire/Dark Tankers suggested as fun builds. I don't have one myself, but you have two self-heals and two end regaining powers and Burn plus a single-target immobilize. Plus a damage aura, and Fiery Embrace plus Soul Drain.
Seems like a different sort of tank with a lot of things to think about during fights.

Fire/Ice Blaster
Big Blasts, fun with Ice Patch to play slip'n'fall with the foes.
Altoholic - but a Blaster at Heart!

I assume you only play Hero?
If you want to try Villain, give Merc/Storm or Necro/Pain a try!
And of course Fortunata.
What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

Oh, no. Villains are good, too. I was actually thinking about MMs recently. My first villain 50 was a thugs/poison, and I still enjoy playing her quite a bit.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. xD

TA/Sonic Blast Defender - A high damage soloer and a great team debuffer. It's probably what I'll roll up next after my current group of lowbies hit 50. When i16 rolls around, you could go Sonic/TA, but I actually like the defender version better - it's has stronger debuffs and the damage for a defender is excellent.
Ice/SS Tanker - Probably the only tanking build I've ever enjoyed. Great mitigation in defense, slows and the big heals. Good damage, no endurance problems after energy absorption, no need to take taunt because of chilling embrace and icicles.
AR/Mental Blaster - What I'm currently working on. Three AoE cones by level 10 makes you able to pump out AoE damage early. My build also dips into the presence pool so you can double stack fear with scare and intimidate. I call this the You Scream Cone build (yeah, I know, cheesy ).
Electric/Ninjitsu Stalker - It's probably one of the best team oriented stalkers villain side due to the fact it has great AoEs. Lightning Rod also doesn't break hide, so you can AoE then still AS the boss. Ninjitsu also has tons of tricks and toys.
DM/Shield Scrapper - it's a scrapper FOTM but with good reason. It's a beast of a build that combines the mitigation of shields with a self heal in DM. Currently ranked one of (if not the highest) as the highest dps scrapper build around.
Earth/Thorns Dom - a stones and sticks (yeah, another cheesy joke) build which combines the crowd control capability of earth with the AoEs of thorny assault.
Storm/Ice Defender - a thematic choice which also has a lot of power. Freezing rain + ice storm (which is blaster strength) is quite nasty.
Roll something with Fallout and team with me or some other people who like wild, reckless, care free play
Right now I'm running the most team unfriendly build I've ever made, a Bots/Storm MM heavily slotted for knock back. I'm having more fun then I've had in a long time, watching people fly around, tossing things to the ground, even keeping EBs and Bosses on their butts. I had an Energy Blaster slotted similarly once, but the amount of chaos I can generate on the MM is unparalleled.

Not *that* might be the key: A balls out crazy ****** superteam. all NRG and storm and single target damage and just plain stupid-crazy chaos. Ahhhh, the ideas are starting to materialize...

Here's the thing. I'm rapidly approaching my 4 year vet mark on my main account. I also maintain a two-year-old account. My first 50 took a little over 9 months, and before crafting badges came out, I was in the top 50 for badges on Justice. I basically taken every approach to play style from solo grinding a fire/fire tank to 40 during i6 and intensive badging to multi-box farming and marketeering. It's all more than a little stale, now. Lately, I've been rolling more or less random set combos, bumping around zones, and running contact missions, and it's been pretty fun.
"So what," you rightfully ask:
Who has some suggestions for builds that might have no merits outside of just being fun to play? It doesn't have to be an able Farmer, a PvP fotm, or big on DPS. It doesn't need to lend itself to crazy builds, heavy proc muling, or perma-anything. Of course, a toon can be fun and be any of these things, so really any suggestions are fine, but the main criterea is "Fun to play," not "leet." (or really even "useful")
I'll jump in in a bit with a few ideas as I come up with them. I'm really looking more for discussion than advice, but if someone suggests something that works for me, I might express my gratitude with some villain schwag (preferably on Justice).
