Lighthouse posted an update that the new date is June 15th (under announcements).

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think his/her complaint is that it was kind of late notice to extend the judging date on the supposed last day of the contest. While I'm not exactly in a froth about it, I do think it was a tad shoddy. If you're overwhelmed by entries, you likely know that with 2, 5, or even 10 days to go. Waiting until the day of the winner announcements to announce an extension strikes me as mildly incompetent...but I might be the only one who feels that way.

It's no great shakes but I'm not even putting this on Lighthouse's shoulders...I suspect the ball was dropped at a higher level and he's merely the messenger in this instance.

  2. It is my understanding that only submissions submitted to Hypercomics will display there. The people who created jpg or pdf comics will only be displayed if they happen to win.

Or if they put them up somewhere and give us the link. I'm enjoying the ones I've read so far but haven't had a lot of time to make comments. Win or lose, I hope a lot of the folks keep making comics for us to enjoy. Comics like ChaseArcanum's Strength have a great visual style that transcend the limitations of a screenshot comic. There are a lot of great ones over there...just browse through and you may find a gem.

  3. Assuming that the need for an extension might have something to do with an abnormal number of quality submissions, I think it would be a nice thing if some of the rednames weigh-in on their favorites that didn't make the cut after the winners are announced. The folks taking home their prize packages will have plenty of kudos when all is said and done...but the people who came close deserve a little bit of the spotlight too.

On a personal note, maybe I can get up over 400 views before the end comes. Click that link and my sig and tell me what you think, please.

So is the notification Wednesday or Friday? Because if it's Wednesday, I haven't gotten my winning notification email.

That's really weird. I got mine.

    Just kidding.

There was much requesting of the Cyrus Thompson Center. And yanno, it's ok if ya'll (devs and stuff) don't want to say it's going in at some point, but pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease put it in.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Even a resounding no would be refreshing at this point seeing how so many people have asked for it for it with hardly a peep. I never really had any opinion about the issue since I was the most casual of CoH comic readers but I certainly had no opposition to it. Considering that you had a grip of people wanting it and the rest of the player base not much caring, why hasn't it already happened?

Getting back on topic, I was never much of a fan of the comic. I never really felt that the game mechanics translated well into a comic book setting and always flinched a little when they tried to force it. However, I know many of you enjoyed it and I feel bad for those of you who will miss it.

Attache, your comic is really good. I'll spend some time looking at the others. Might even make my own at some point, just for kicks.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Thanks, I appreciate that. I may do an extended and corrected version on mine at some point. I just don't want to noodle with it now and end up disqualified.

I would love it if they would list the top 50 or top 25... it would be nice since a lot of people put a lot of work into them.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If they did that, I think I'd just as soon not know exactly where my comic placed were it one of the top 50, 25, or 16. Sure, I'd like to know it was in there but I'd rather be able to imagine it was in 4th place instead of knowing that it was and that I had only missed it by a nose.

With so many great entries, I don't think I have to worry though.

Wonder how many submissions there would have been had Hypercomics worked for everyone...

    Yes, I'm still bitter.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Seeing how I waited until the zero hour, I probably would have been super friggin' pissed myself if Hypercomics hadn't worked for me. I'd say that you are entitled.

  9. Yeah, I got to say, I'm really surprised that it's only 300-ish. I mean, I think there were 300 up on time to Hypercomics and I figured that there were maybe a couple hundred who submitted them without publishing publically.

On a personal note, I'm kind of perplexed about the number of views my comic has gotten. Sure, I've looked at it a few times from work and I've solicited feedback on the forums but my page views are way up there. It's hard for me to believe I'd be in the running because of the text box upload problems but someone seems to be looking at my comic an awful lot.

    Who is it? Own up!

    Soooo...

I really dug the one in my sig...but it's been out for awhile so maybe it's nothing new. I just know that I'm in the right age bracket to have some appreciation for it.

    My Comic Entry

    [ QUOTE ]
I just read your comic and really enjoyed it. The flashback to WW2 and tying in the character with the game really were great.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I appreciate that. It's kind of a nice thing to hear from someone who knows a little about good character design. I've been somewhat a fan of the art you've commissioned for The Imperial and always like seeing a new piece. I'm just hoping that someday you get a more scepter-isque in game option to swap out for that mace.

    Thanks again!

The flashback portion was actually nifty, I was referring mainly to the high pixelation of the fonts and edges when you use the zoom feature on the Hypercomic viewer.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ah, yes. The fonts do funky things if you enlarge. It certainly looked much better in the comic creator than it did after upload.

    [ QUOTE ]
The whole WWII Flashback was very inspired - how did you get a tank in there? The tank probably could have been scaled a bit larger, but thats a tiny thing

    [/ QUOTE ]

Heh, Rikti Crash site had to be good for something. I went in with my 50 and snapped a screenshot, then photoshopped in my character models. Save for the guy who pretended to buy something from me at Image and a 50 I SK'd to so I could get the Circle stuff (Monument being an old character I recently re-rolled), I had like no one really to help out. There was a lot of good will on the forums about helping with comics but I found most of my in-game requests went ignored. After that happened a few times, I just did what I could on my own.

You're right that the tank might be scaled a little small even in relation to the human sized character but I was trying to make M1's fist line up. I still like the result well enough but it should have been a little bigger.

The most fun was giving a little snipet of history to M1. I always kind of like backstory in games like this and his was enough of a blank slate that I could play around with it. I had some really detailed ideas I wanted to get into but it's probably a good thing they limited it to 8 pages.

    My Comic Entry

Thanks for the kind words and good review. Some of the fuzziness my have been the upload but it was also probably part of the desaturation and sepia tones I did for the "flashback" portion of the comic. I could certainly understand it not being everyone's cup of tea but those parts do look mostly like I intended them to look.

I seem to be getting a lot of views (and presumably ratings) but not as much feedback...so I appreciate everyone who is taking the time. Thanks so much.

Still hoping for some more reads and reviews over at Hypercomics. The chances of winning are pretty long at this point (lots of nice work over there) so all I'm going to get out of this is feedback. So please, commence feedback.

It's official (as official as my declarations get, which is NOT AT ALL). We have a new leader.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Gotta agree. Does everything my and my brother's entry does, only better. Even has a Gloom shot. Really ought to win something, even if only an honorable mention of some kind.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Since I haven't read them all, I can't really declare it the best but it's pretty damn good. I just wish it were possible to make a better kid character in the game...kids usually end up looking like overly-muscular midgets in CoH. I probably would have given then smooth tights and gone for pajamas or something.

I can say it is entries like that they cause my hope to waiver because even if my comic were one of the better ones (I'm not saying that it is), there will probably be lots of good ones that don't have the few text box glitches that I didn't have time to fix and if all other things are equal (if that's the case...not saying that they are), I think the people who managed clean copies should get something for that extra effort.

Good job in any case. Thanks for relieving me of the burden of a prize package.

EDIT: But I'd still like some feedback over at Hypercomics, people! Please, start reading!

I don't really know how to respond... I mean i'm sorry you're offended but you don't need to degrade me and insult me like that... I was just trying to get this thing done and i was at a lack of time and vocabulary.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Allowing for the fact that a big enough stage and the right amount of wit can make some pretty devastatingly morbid [censored] completely hilarious, it is a little hard for me to believe that you were so out of touch with polite society that "AIDS Man" seemed like a good idea. However, if I were to guage your sin, I'd simply say that it was in failing at funny (in my opinion) and leave it at that. One moment of stupid insensitivity does not a jackass make.

Just so you know, I'm not on the "not funny" bandwagon because I'm oh so PC (I'm not) or because I've know a few people who have passed after developing AIDs (I have)...I say it because your hero simply used it in a name calling context that lacked any semblence of eloquence or wit and it made your hero look like an jerk. If you had pulled off an AIDs joke in the context of showing another character's small-mindedness, you would have still offended someone but you probably would have had a few defenders.

Frost, I sincerely hope that you've never found the funny in a black pit of despair or laughed at Howard Stern or tried to lighten an otherwise dark moment with a bit of risky comedy. We simply don't have the right to fence off our personal areas of mistery shared by millions and declare them off limits to others. All we can really do is not laugh when it falls flat.

  17. Yes, it's actually kind of upsetting because now I have another artist to add to my "one day I'll get a commission from X" list. Can't you guys just keep this quality work to yourself?

Just kidding...I love seeing all the characters and what the artists do with them. The list is getting long, however.

    Attache
  18. Pretty damned nifty. I had wanted a Doug Shuler 3D render for my first commission but (though certainly reasonably priced for the quality) it was kind of out of my price range. I'll be saving my coins for the next few months and I'll try to make it happen. I think I have a very cool dual character concept in mind that should be fun to do and will look great.

Though, maybe a better route is to set up shop on Victory, befriend Doug, and then try to inspire him.

  20. Thanks, man. I appreciate the kind words. I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us.

Everyone really should check out "Not A Hero" over at Hypercomics. It really is one of the best entries I've read so far.

  21. You do some nice work. I've seen quit a bit of art with that character and I've always dug his look. I'm just getting into the art side of CoH/CoV and ordered up my first commission last week. It's like a whole new aspect of the game has opened up for me.

Like many things in my life, I approached the Comic Contest with fevered enthusiasm followed very shortly by malaise. I got quite a bit of work done that first week then I just lost my drive. I only pushed through it because a friend was bugging me about it. I got mine uploaded and the email sent out with about 15 minutes to spare.

And a few of the text boxes didn't display properly but it was really my fault. I mean, I didn't have any of the comp problems people are describing here and if I had just kept up sopme momentium, I could have uploaded test pages a couple weeks back and fixed the display problems. I'm probably going to finish mine properly at some point and take down the old one once the contest is over. I doubt I have a shot with the text box funkiness but maybe they'll be forgiving. Who knows?

    My Comic Entry

A few people have apparantly read and at least rated my comic entry and I have to say I appreciate it. I was hoping to get a few comments though...I'm considering taking some time to revamp and extend it but I'd like some idea what people are thinking first. Could some of you give it a view and let me know what you think...either here or on there?

I procrastinated until the last minute (well, it wasn't just laziness...I had some real life stuff happening too) and there were a few formatting glitches with text boxes that I didn't have time to fix so even the remotely positive rating is surprising. There are some really nice entries over there and I'm enjoying them quite a bit. If you haven't taken the time to check them out, you should.
