Quote:I agree to a point but the way some people are going about it it's like the end of the world and that they should never touch these characters.I'm going to try to explain this again. Relative performance matters to a great number of people. No one wants to be last. When you take a set for concept, sure performance may not matter to you. But when you want a character that's bringing the BOOM, you want to bring the BOOM. One doesn't need to be a number cruncher to care that they don't fall behind.
Relative performance doesn't matter to everyone. I get that. But it is disrespectful to suggest that it doesn't matter period. It would be like me saying that the devs should care about power pool customization. That does nothing for gameplay, it's cosmetic. But cosmetic issues are deeply important to a lot of people. (They are to me too, BTW) If 'good enough' is 'good enough' then there is no reason for any of these buffs right now as Blasters are 'good enough' now. There was no reason for the Stalker buffs, because they were 'good enough'. The reason for those buffs and for the Blaster buffs now is that other ATs have 'better shinies."
Sets aren't going to be strictly equal in performance nor should they be. But there needs to be a reasonable band of performance so that sets don't seem like obvious choices (on the good side) or sucker bets (on the bad). My concern with the snipe changes is that it is creating just that situation.
Relative performance is important to a point but the fact remains that even when 'the worst set' is doing better than any set in i23 or prior was is still very very relevant.
I'm not really trying to dismiss it, I agree that everything should be balanced within reason, however the devs have already said they're going to look at the snipeless sets. But you still have people talking about just flat out retiring their characters for no reason OTHER than relative performance and that's just silly. -

No he said any questions about release dates will be answer WITH "Soon"
not that they'd be answered "Soon".
Basically what he said was if they don't just tell us the release date, as in, it isn't announced either elsewhere or at the coffee talk as part of his presentation it's not going to do us any good to ask him because all he'll do is answer with "Soon" -
Quote:Except that being #10 still means you're STILL kicking butt and taking names and contributing to teams in a meaningful way.Honestly, I'm wondering if you're trolling at this point, because it's been explained to you often. Relative performance is important to many people. If my set is #2 for damage now, but then goes to #10, then I have every reason to be upset. You may not care, but others do.
The whole argument boils down to "but his shiny is BETTER". And we've been told, REPEATEDLY, that they're going to look at non-snipe sets once the snipe issue is settled. -
Quote:Because it's relative. Just because something is on the 'bottom' compared to other sets doesn't mean it's bad. There are -always- going to be underperformers in the game because someone ends up being on the bottom. That doesn't mean it's unplayable. It doesn't need to be nerfed in order to fall behind. All that it needs to happen is to not get a buff when (almost) everyone else does.
If non-snipe having sets are considered "balanced" against snipe having sets currently, when Snipes are viewed as lackluster bordering on useless, then how can they be anything but underperforming when Snipes are improved to be "fairly useable" to "Outstanding" (depending on build)?
This is admittedly far more the case when it comes to Defenders and Corruptors.
It's easy to make it -sound- bad by using terms such as 'falling behind' or whining that other ATs are boosted more, but it doesn't change the fact that everything is still getting raised. The non-snipe sets are still getting the range boost and non-crashing nuke, so however playable they are now is getting boosted. There is a bottom, but what 'the bottom' constitutes has been raised.
To be completely arbitrary, let's make up a term called performance factor. Say as of I24 that Snipe sets get a rating of like 8, non snipe sets are 6. Sure, they're 'the bottom'. But when the min. performance factor needed to have little problems in the 1-50 run is -5-, then it means little that they're 'on the bottom'. That's essentially what we're looking at. -
...compared to not being VIP at all and having to pay for things like ATs or market access >>
Really, this game offers -a lot- for its subscription fee. -
Well the knowledge that he's aware of problems and it's on his 'to do' list should be enough, you know it's not coming in i24 so even if he said the rest (which sounded just like he was going to say he was dropping the -spd) you'd still be stuck waiting.

Pulled this from the beta thread about snipes. Snipping all but the relevant parts:
Quote:With regards to Blast and Assault sets that don't have access to a Snipe blast, they will definitely be high on our list of sets to add mechanics to in the not-too-distant-future. We're committed to making Snipe powers worth taking for the powersets that have them, and we're committed to working on the balance of powersets, Archetypes, and the game as a whole, so rest assured that if your powerset of choice needs QoL fixes or performance tweaking, it will be on our list. -
Ok, there are 3 ways the converters work:
By Rarity (1 converter)
By Category (2 converters)
By Set (3 converters)
By rarity will take an uncommon and reroll and turn it into any uncommon. It will take a rare and can reroll into any other rare. And the same for Very Rare.
By Category goes by what -kind- of IO it is, like Defense, or Melee attack, or Targeted AOE, or Accurate healing. When it rerolls it will look at what other sets are in the category and the proper level range. Rarity is not taken into account and can result in an uncommon rerolling into a rare or vice versa (however, you cannot get a very rare this way) So for example a Doctored Wounds could become a Numina's Convalescence.
By Set rerolls -within- the same set. So for example turning a Numina's Convalescence Healing/Endurance into the Recovery/Regeneration proc or the Healing/Recharge, etc.
So, converting yellows to oranges can be done via Category and within Set, but never within Rarity. Converting by rarity always nets the same rarity.
So Red Fortune: it depends on the level of the IO because there are multiple defense sets at different level ranges. Red Fortune goes 25-50, which means it over laps with ALL defense sets at some point. At 25-30 it can turn into any other kind of Defense IO. At 31-40 it can turn into a gift of the ancients, serendipity, or luck of the gambler. At 41-50 it can only be turned into a Luck of the Gambler, as it's the only other Defense set in that level range. -
Quote:http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/news/n...e_affinity.phpWas there a patch note detaling the powers and who can use this set or did I just miss it?
Primary for defenders, secondary for controllers, corrupters, and masterminds. -
Quote:The chat largely isn't worth paying attention to to begin with even when it's just normal chat. You forgot to mention the several trolls we picked up in the chat as a result of being on TwitchTV's front page. Hit_Streak was getting in some serious batting practice with his banhammer.
As it is, I was only around for the first chunk of the coffeetalk. The rest I just watched the recorded vid where the chat component isn't even visible. -
Base raids don't exist anymore, so go nuts, add whatever you please without worry.
-
Well it's just the reverse of converting a normal armor set over to stalkers, something has to be taken out for hide and he mentioned changing caltrops.

Hey guys,
Nothing really new this coffee talk. They cover the new super packs, a number of the new ATOs, the new IO sets, some of the new IO set bonuses (ex getting rid of reduced XP debt, etc) . And a lot of whacky stuff with people photo bombing Zwill's camera, including Dr Aeon running by as Jack In Irons. All stuff covered on beta and the like.
Questions didn't really bring any new revelations, just Synapse confirming he does want to eventually proliferate stuff that hasn't been yet like Kinetics to Masterminds, Spines, Ice Melee/Armor to Brutes, Ninjitsu to scrappers, etc. No confirmation for anything for I25, if there's time in the schedule to do it he'll work at it (as he says he wants to do more proliferation about every 3 issues) but no guarantees there's time.
Psionic Melee was brought up but only in the fact it's been announced and is being worked on, we'll get more news when we get it.
So if you haven't heard about any of the new stuff, go look at the coffee talk otherwise just hit up beta there are plenty of threads covering the new IOs and things. -
Quote:Really it does. 2 months and you get any power set of your choice for 'free'. No one is bending your arm behind your back to buy them immediately upon release nor, as was pointed out, are you obligated to get every set. And they aren't releasing power sets every month, the last batch of powersets was back in early spring with beast and staff, then several months of nothing.Given that last month a new set was introduced, this month a new set was introduced, and most people seem to think next month a new set will be introduced, and the sets are twice the monthly allotment...no, 400 points/month really doesn't...
That said, a VIP subscription does pay for beta, and all the sets are free there... -

Very true, that skipped my mind.
-
Got mine. Pretty happy with my grav/nature controller so far. breezed through the atlas arcs.
-
haven't seen any announcement for maintenance so I'd expect it'll go live around 8 am or so, whenever they regularly turn on the new items in the market
-
Quote:Worse? You mean with them getting access to non-crashing nukes and potentially insta-snipes? >>I honestly cannot decide what kind of character I am going to make tomorrow. Throughout my CoH career, Defenders were my favorite archetype... but lately I've been having a harder time justifying having the best buffs in the game for such weak damage... and it's only going to get worse with issue 24.

Thematic pairings?
Well, lesse:
Controllers
Plant/Nature - the most obvious pairing. All plants all the time.
Earth/Nature - All those plants and mushrooms grow in the earth!
Fire/Nature - As said, forest fires!
Ice/Nature - Forests get winter too!
Darkness/Nature - Forests can be pretty scary places!
Gravity/Nature - Controlling natural forces! (my personal pick and what I'll be making tomorrow)
Defender/Corrupter
Nature/Archery - A 'good' Poison Ivy type
Fire Blast/Nature - Forest fire thing again
ice/Nature - See above
Radiation Blast/Nature - Toxic forest
Dark Blast/Nature - Haunted forest (witch?)
Sonic/nature - again 'natural' forces
Water Blast - Water + plants = Grow!
Beam Rifle/Nature - Solar powered tech!
Mastermind
Beast/nature - most 'natural' pairing
Necromancy/Nature - a 'Dark' Druid type
Demons/nature - See above
Thugs/nature - Another 'poison ivy' style variety.
Robot/Nature - More a concept of opposites attracting, like the Devoured IDF bots, or even tech that controls nature, etc.
just generic concepts that can fit with most of these, druids, witches, wizards, environmental scientists/robots made by them, hippies, nature mutants, hunters 'attuned' to nature. Honestly I think Nature is really one of the best 'concept' sets they've put out lately, it really can pair easily with a -lot- of power sets without seeming that 'far fetched'. -
Well tomorrow we'll know if the set is love it or leaf it.
