Last night was fun, Pinnheads! Bombing went very smoothly, U'kon Gr'ai went down quickly, and a big "thank you" goes out to the taunters who were combing the perimeter of the ship as we had a steady influx of Rikti for the duration of the Bowl phase. Good form!
Updated for next week. -
Yep, sounds like you have the gist of it!
If you are looking for good ranged blaster, I strongly suggest giving Energy Blast or Ice Blast a try.
Energy Blast, with its inherent knockback, really does a nice job of keeping most enemies off of you. You even get a 70ft. ST blast whose purpose is exactly that: send the enemy flying in the opposite direction. (Power Push is an absolute joy for anyone trying to keep enemies out of melee range.) Then, again, if you do get overwhelmed, once i24 hits, you just hit Nova, which will scatter anything it doesn't kill, and then keep on shooting.
Ice Blast's strength is it's holds. At level 26, you can hold a boss by stacking Bitter Freeze Ray and Freeze Ray. Not to mention, with most of your attacks carrying a -SPD component, the enemies take a longer time to get to you. Ice Storm gives you a different kind of mitigation, since the NPCs will want to run out of it (but are slowed at the same time), and Blizzard will do the same thing, just hit harder.
Those would be my top two for good stay-away-from-me power sets. -
I am unclear: you prefer ranged combat, and you hate jousting in, yet you are choosing a combo that gets the most out of jousting in and using close combat. (3 of your most useful powers are, arguably, Short Circuit, Psychic Shockwave, and Drain Psyche.) It just seems counter-intuitive to me, since there are plenty of other combinations (especially with the changes coming in i24) that can and will out-do this combo at ranged combat.
That all being said, I am not one to talk, since I tend to favor concept over functionality. So, tips:
Your early game will be tough, but you'll jump to the other side of the spectrum by the time you hit the 40s. Early on, you don't have a lot of mitigation from either set, save for Subdue and Tesla Cage at lvl 18. I would take and slot up your T1 and T2 blasts immediately, and do the same with Ball Lightning and Psychic Scream. Those 4, plus Subdue for problem targets, will probably be your main attacks into the 20s, unless you want to dip into your melee abilities. I would also recommend taking Combat Jumping or Hover early on to give you some additional maneuverability/defense.
This could be an absolutely deadly combo by the 40s, after i24, since you can open a mob with Thunderous Blast, jump in while they are writhing and fire off Psychic Shockwave, and anything that isn't dead should be damn close enough that they can pick them off one by one.
All in all, I'd say you are best off hopping in and out of melee range with this combination, and abusing your Primary attacks to make sure that anything that gets in close range won't last much longer. -
Quote:I have actually had the same experience as Tenjoy. Energy Torrent sends my enemies flying away from me, but Explosive Blast sends them away from the target. (I have witnessed the same effects from my Peacebringer's Luminous Detonation attack.) This makes sense: with any other Targeted AoE, the effect starts at the target and radiates outward. Just as the damage component of Explosive Blast radiates outward from the target, so does the knockback effect.Just need to point out that this, while a common misconception, isn't true. Knockback, regardless of the shape of the delivering AoE, always knocks its targets directly away from the source of the effect - and in the case of a power like explosive blast, that source is the player. The only way you'd get EB knocking enemies away from the center of the blast is if you use it on an enemy in melee range so that the center is right next to you.
The only way you get radial KB is with PBAoEs or powers that use a pseudopet (like bonfire) to deliver the knockback (which is therefore treated as the source).
I am not saying you are wrong, Muon, because in truth I have never researched the actual powers and thus have no tangible evidence to provide. I am only saying that my experience with Explosive Blast and powers like it, both from my characters and other players', has been for the knockback to radiate out from the targeted NPC, regardless of the player's location.
To answer the OP: if you hover-blast, I would use Explosive Blast for the longer range and to avoid having to line up the cone. If you mix melee with blasts, Energy Torrent is probably better since you have better control on the direction in which you are knocking back your enemies, and the range doesn't matter since you are getting in close anyway. -
Quote:I may actually pick one of my lesser-played 50s and turn him into this.I have one character who has all the Recipes memorized. He is the only one who does ANY building of enhancements for ALL my characters. This saves HUGE amounts of influence and allows me to sell all recipes and enhancements as soon as I get them. This character has already created every enhancement and set enhancement the Active Player will need before that character is even created. These IOs are stored in the Super Group base for when they are needed.
Everything else about your method scares me. I like the idea of the trader/storage bots, always have, but I have never had the desire to devote my time to that kind of thing. But this (above quote) sounds like something I would be willing to put the time into, since it would end up saving time (and inf.) in the long run.
Keep on trucking, Steelclaw! -
I like this simply for the use of the word "chutzpah."

Quote:Good point, Doc. I pondered that exact thing after I posted my previous message, and I think your final thought is exactly right. They say that, but I think the difficulty may be overstated. It explains why creating a scabbard isn't as simple as just making a belt that looks like it has a sword hanging off of it like some people seem to think, but that's all.
We've had costume parts that change their behavior/appearance based on whether a specific power is active for years now (wings, rocket/winged/piston boots, jetpacks), and auras that only turn on when the character is in a combat stance for a while too. The Vanguard shield has "on" and "off" graphics -- and it even has an animation to transition between the two. I don't see any reason a scabbard couldn't work like the Vanguard shield.
I think it's more of a "this would be a LOT of work and we're very busy creating other awesome things" situation than a "we don't have the tech to pull it off at all" one. -
I think Scabbards are still a long way off, simply due to the large number of different sword models used by the game, and by each power set. With the quiver, all of the arrow-using power sets use animations that draw the arrows from the same spot, and all of the arrows are relatively the same size.
Also, they can only draw these types of times one way: full or empty. The character model would either be left holding a sword in their hand with a sword still visible in the sheath, or drawing a sword out of a seemingly empty sheath. A quiver of arrows is supposed to run out eventually, true enough, but given the number of arrows a quiver holds, that detail is more easily ignored. -
Dang. I'd love to bring my Sonic/Sonic along for this, but alas, I don't get home until 5:30 or 6 central time, so I am completely out for this. Good luck though!

Great job this week, Pinnacle! That was a fitting way to end the 2xp Weekend! 6 full teams, with a good amount of overflow for the zone. For those who did not make it into the zone, I cannot stress this enough:
Get to the zone early to reserve your spot!
I hate turning people away, I would have no problem running an 8 team raid, but the zone can only accommodate so many players (probably for the best). Hopefully, this was a one-time occurrence!

The one negative of my recent vacation was that I received a NASTY sunburn, and am currently in Stage 3 of recovery a.k.a. Peeling. (Stage 1 being extreme pain, Stage 2 being incessant itching.) Since I'm feeling unsightly, I have no desire to go out this evening, so I very well could end up online for a while.
I was hoping to push my level 43 PB to 50 this weekend. However, if lowbies is where the action is going to be, I definitely have a variety of characters with which I can join! -
From what I have been told, the raid-to-end-all-Rikti went fantastically! 6 teams, all kicking Rikti butt, with enough perimeter herding that the Rikti may as well have been cattle. Well-played. Thanks for complying with the idea, Pinnacle!
Updated for this week. -
I suppose in a warped sense, that's what I am saying, haha. But it is more that we think it would be EPIC to conclude the Invasion weekend by running a Mothership raid with the best that we all have to offer.
-
Good raid last night, Pinnacle! It was a very smooth run, and thanks to all the newcomers who followed instructions, I hope you enjoyed it.
FOR NEXT WEEK, since it is an invasion weekend, it seems only fitting that we should end it with an all-out brutal assault on the Rikti, so BRING YOUR BEST CHARACTER! Let's see what it is like to take out the Mothership with the best that Pinnacle has to offer! -
.:City-Wide Broadcast Secure Channel Delta:.
.:Authorization: Vanguard - The Lady Grey:.
.:Begin Transmission:.
Citizens of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles!
I, Talsor Vox, leader of the Talsorian Guard want to thank you for aiding us in suppressing the Rikti presence in the War Zone on a weekly basis. However, many of you have probably already heard that the Rikti have amassed enough forces to launch another invasion. Intel suggests that this invasion will occur within a week's time, most likely beginning this Friday. Once the dropships reveal themselves, members of the Guard will be leading squads across the city to fight back the Rikti, and we welcome any and all supers to join us in the fight. No matter your allegiance, we are fighting for the planet on which we all live.
For our regularly scheduled raid this coming weekend, the Guard is requesting that the strongest supers of the city and the isles join us in the War Zone. We hope to inflict a crippling blow to the Rikti morale and numbers, and will need the best to do so.
Until then, steel yourselves and protect your assets. The Rikti are coming.
.:End Transmission:.
TL;DR / Blunt version
The Talsorian Guard is requesting that anyone attending this week's raid (8/5/12), bring their best character along for the run. We want to end the invasion weekend with a bang, and the best way to do that (at least in our minds) is with a league full of powerful characters, leaving an fast and awesome trail of Rikti destruction across the War Zone. We hope you'll join us for it! -

Yes. As a player who prefers to strictly blast, I would miss it. However, I think there are other powers in the set that could go away in exchange for it. -
Can't say I remember you, but I only played on and off up until a couple years ago (when I became a continual subscriber). Welcome back though!
And yes, check out PinnBadges (get an admin to unsilence you once you join the channel). And you can probably find a decent number of pick up groups by using the LFG channel. -
I am sorry to hear that the raid was so rough on Sunday! Off week, I guess. I am also sorry for my absence, "life" has been been very busy as of late. Thankfully, I have vacation coming up, which will be great for my mental health (what's left of it anyway). Unfortunately, that means I will be away from the game, and miss the August 5th raid. BUT, despite the impending vacation, my schedule this week looks a little more open, so I should be able to squeeze in some good play time this week, and I will DEFINITELY be leading this Sunday's raid. Looking forward to seeing you all (finally)!

Sorry I missed the raid this week! Real life rang unexpectedly. But I hear the raid went well and that there was a decent turn-out, so I am glad it was a smooth evening. I hope to return this coming week!

Having attended one of these successful runs last week (which was great, since it was my ONLY night during the week that I could play), I can vouch for the level of epic fun being advertised here. It was a great time, and if I get online Wednesdays, I have plenty of characters that I would be happy to bring along.

I am so glad my favorite archetype is getting all this goodness. 80-ft. ranged T3 single target blasts, and now crash-less nukes. That's all I've ever wanted and I am so glad it is coming!

I am with you, Aurora Girl. I am stuck name sitting until my points roll over next month.
I am currently sitting on "Tide Turner" for when that time comes. -
Good raid last night, Pinnacle. I have to admit, I was surprised we ended up with a full league! Just a few minutes before invites started, we only had enough present at Point Du Hoc for about 2 teams, but then there was a surge of players into the zone, so good showing to you all! Again, I apologize for my temporary absence during the raid. I was experiencing Toddler-ocalypse (a.k.a. my 3-year-old and 5-year-old cousins currently staying in my house). But the raid seemed to go smoothly enough, so I guess it is all good.
Thanks for continuing to come out to these! Updated for next week. -
Fantastic raid last night! The grates were bombed in what felt like record time. We could do a bit better at steering clear of the grates in general though, I noticed a number of people go down courtesy of the explosions. However, the bowl phase went very smoothly. A big shout out to those taunting Rikti from the perimeter. There was a constant influx of enemies last night. And to top it all off: I didn't DC once! Let's hope these last attempted fixes stick.
A happy 4th of July to all my fellow Americans on the server!

Honestly, I don't give a rats behind about the Black Wolf.
All I can say is that I would pay 400 Paragon Points for the Elemental Order set in a heartbeat.
