One down, 33 to go (yeah, I know I got it easy compared to some of the more severe altoholics 'round here...) -
I first heard about City of Heroes when they had those ads in comics (Marvel or DC, don't remember) at the time of launch. Was not into videogames at the time (still am not - I only play CoH and freecell...) so I said to myself "cool!" and I turned the page.
A year or so later, I saw the DVD Collector's edition in a sales bin at the local electronic store, so, since I was getting the game and 1 month free for less than the cost of the month's subscription (I'm a cheap-*** *******, so sue me...), I decided to give it a try.
Been a subscriber ever since... -
*le sigh*
I swore I would eschew that whole iTrial business, but in this case, with you at the helm, I might get tempted... -
To expend on what Chad wrote...
As I understand, you have 2 costumes, 1 standard and 1 for boss fights
I'll assume the "standard" costume is on your 1st costume slot (i.e. costume slot 0 - costume slot numbering start at 0)
and your "boss fights" costume is on your 2nd costume slot (i.e. costume slot 1)
You want to use the Vanguard Sigil Costume change (i.e. CCVanguardSigil), but you did not specify if you wanted it going from the "standard" costume to the "boss fights" costume, or the reverse, or both, so I'll assume both.
You want to use "[" (i.e. LBRACKET) and "]" (I.E. RBRACKET) as triggers, and again I'll assume you want the left bracket to change from "standard" to "boss fights" and the right bracket to change back.
To change from "standard" (costume slot 0) to "boss fights" (costume slot 1):
Code:To change back from "boss fights" (costume slot 1) to "standard" (costume slot 0):/bind LBRACKET "cce 1 CCVanguardSigil"
Code:/bind RBRACKET "cce 0 CCVanguardSigil"

I suppose this would go into the "Specific Question" section...
Quote:I know the most probable answer ("No") and the most probable reason (something akin to "Devs are payed to, y'know, develop and not to go to conventions - holding the Summit in our backyard is the most cost-effective compromise"), but if enough people ask about this, they might change their minds...Any plans to hold a similar Player Summit east of the Mississippi ? -

As of now, CoH is in the lead with 33.1% of the votes...

Just my two cents...
Quote:Yep.I would say there is a substantial population of players who shy away from physical violence and for them, even this virtual attack is off putting.
Quote:there are some players who find the speed at which PvP occurs (or used too) too fast for them to react. Side note: anyone watch that video of the guy doing the new I-trial, at one point he says "Sorry guys, I'm not used to my characters moving this fast". (mad props though, he only died once, and it was on purpose on a character that had no defensive toggles).
Quote:Most people won't play something they find frustrating for hours and hours.
Yep, which leads to another reason I don't PvP:
Silly enough, I play this game for the storylines.
In PvE, some are really good, some are awful, but it's all a matter of taste.
In PvP they simply don't exist. -
What I use is this bind:
j "beginchat /send "Jello Shooters" (as $name) "
where:
j is the key to which I have bound the macro
"Jello Shooters" is the name of the Global Channel I have set up this macro for (between apostrophes because it's more than 1 word)
$name is the variable (as Roderick explained) to send your character's name.
After I hit the "j" key, it automatically gets typed in my chat window, and all I have to do is add the "Chat text".
To do something similar to your exemple:
[Global Name][Character Name]Chat text
[LETTER] "beginchat /send "NAMEOFYOURGLOBALCHANNEL" [YOURGLOBALNAME][$name]" -

Good job ! */em thumbsup*
I tried it with a few images I had, it works perfectly. This is one of the results.
Now, about that (very ugly ATM) website...
1) The reset button does not do anything - if it is what I think it is, it's just a question of it not reloading the page as it should. No biggie, but should be fixed: I had no other recourse but hit "Save" to go back to the main page, even if the image I had originally selected was a wee bit too small to be useful.
2) It would be nice to have instructions
a) on the main page as per what size images work best (I'm guessing anything more than 1024 pixels in height will be cropped at the bottom)
b) on the "Save" page (or maybe a 3rd page with a "Back to main page" button) on what to do once the screenfile has been generated. Somethin' like...
Quote:1) Unzip the file you just downloaded to a known location (ex. your Desktop). It should give you a folder named "data"
2) On Windows: Open the folder where City of Heroes is located on your hard drive (typically under "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes").
On Mac: Right-click the City of Heroes application and select "Show Package Contents". Open the "Contents", then "Resources", then "transgaming", then "c_drive", then either "coh" or "Program Files" and then "coh".
3) If you DO NOT already have a "data" folder, copy the folder you unzipped to this location.
4) If you DO have a "data" folder, just copy the "CREATION" folder location under "data\texture_library\GUI" from the folder you unzipped to the corresponding location in you City of Heroes installation. -

Why server consolidation is not a good idea.

Welcome to the forum. You have posted one of the oft repeated suggestions, "Consolidate the servers."
First, my stock answer, one which I stand by and repeat with all due fervor. HELL NO.
Second, a tip on searching.
A. Click on "Search" up at the top of the forum.
B. On the left, under "Forum(s) to search," select "Suggestions and ideas."
C. On the right, Keyword Search Terms. This is probably where your problem was if you did search. Try the following, exactly as typed:
+server -pvp -"re: "
This will search for anything with "Server" in the title, including Servers, Combine Servers, Consolidate Servers, and The Server At McDonalds Is Rude. it will eliminate "PVP," so you won't see PVP server requests, and the -re: portion of it removes replies, so you'll see the root of every thread that comes up, letting you see just how many threads there are on this. (The last helps for other subjects, as well.)
D. Click the "In subject" radio button. This is a search, not a cute blonde in a bikini. Here, you want to ignore the body.
E. Leave Username Search blank.
F. Date range, Newer Than, change the 1 to a 3, and the time to Months.
G. Result format doesn't matter. Click on "Submit."
As I try this now, (12/3/08,) we have:
- Consolidate Server
- Server Stats RSS Feed
- $server modifier for chat
- Fix the forum server
- Early issue server
- Merging low population server
- Combine slow server
- Server status
- Global chat on the Character and Server Screens
- Rated M server
- Add Ponies, Nerf Vills, merge Servers, Pistol Melee
- Server Visiting
- Display Central Time on Server Status Page
Ignoring the smartalec reply, that's three full discussions about this topic.
You should have read one of them if (inevitably) something similar comes up in your search.
Now, on to the topic at hand....
Why server consolidation is not a good idea.
- Just because YOU like living in New York City doesn't mean I can't like Kansas.
Yay, you love having huge lag spikes as you get near the Black Market/Wentworths and a busy broadcast. Congrats. Enjoy Freedom.
Some of us - many of which you will get replies from with this subject - like *low population* servers. If we *wanted* to be on Freedom, we'd *be* on Freedom.
I have characters on Freedom. I rarely play them (and actually moved a character OFF of Freedom to finish leveling it to 50) because *I DON'T LIKE FREEDOM.* I dislike the banality of broadcast, the high percentage of *horrid* teams I've come across there, the lag around any gathering point- and I've got a decent connection and system. For much the same reason, I typically start in Galaxy City instead of Atlas Park - I don't *want* to log in to a costume contest with several 50s spamming powers and nonsense arguments in broadcast.
Some of us *like* nice, quiet servers.
- Kansas, part 2.
In addition, servers have their own personalities. No, I don't mean that literally, there's no AI to worry about if you start hearing "Daisy, Daisy" over your speakers or headset. Freedom's a crowded mess. Virtue is the RP server. Pinnacle is the "Drunk" server. Others have specific communities, such as those from Australia/NZ, Europe, etc.
- "I only saw one other person. World of Conancraft has eleventy billion!"
So what?
We don't run around camping spawn points in this game. People are in missions. People are spread across many zones. Search on a map or do a /whoall and you'll miss those in missions, as well as those who are, for whatever reason, on /hide. Your "search" there didn't give you a full picture, not in the least.
- "I put up my LFT flag and nothing happened!"
Learn to search. Don't just wait. Form a team yourself.
- "I AM SPARTACUS!" No, not any more.
Remember logging in and seeing all those slots? Everyone has those - some buy more than the base 12, you get an extra one each year, you could have a total of 36 on any server. Everyone does. Every one has a character with a unique name. Maybe not a *good* name, but a unique one. Every one has a character with a unique name. Maybe not a *good* name, but a unique one.
Now merge servers. Suddenly, CoolBlasterDude from server 1 is getting merged with CoolBlasterDude from Server 2. Who gets to keep their name? Nobody has been able to answer this with any degree of satisfaction. Add a number? But I am NOT CoolBlasterGuy1. And what if the name's too long? Does the older character keep it? What if they're not as active?
People are *VERY* attached to their names. They are, quite obviously, part of their character.
- "This Is SPARTA!" Sorry, Sparta exists already. You are GenericSG 8734 287 9798.
What else has a name? Supergroups. And I can *guarandamntee* that the same name is in use on multiple servers. Sometimes it's 'branches' of the same SG, sometimes it's coincidence. But with *everything* involved in an SG - from its identity and reputation on the server, to everything stored in the database about what it owns, what its base is like and such, this would be a disaster in the making. And no, auto merging them when the servers merge, even if they have room to, is not an option.
- "I am... where'd Spartacus go?"
Remember all those slots? Well, you start with 1/3 of the available ones. You can buy up to 36 total (24 on top of the ones you get initially.) Now, what do you suppose would happen if you merged two servers, and someone has, say, 20 characters on each? Not unusual. In fact, before those extra slots, I had *filled up* several servers. Do those characters just disappear? Do they move? Free move to another server sounds great, right... well, except you now kick them from their supergroup, remove them from their friends lists and more. This makes for angry and unhappy customers. Or rather, ex customers.
- I will play where I damn well want to. And you can too.
And that should be blunt enough. If I want a crowded server, I'll go to Freedom. If I want an RP server, I'll go to Virtue. I do NOT want to be shoved onto another server I *don't* like. If I wanted to go there, *I'd be there.*
If the server you're on isn't "busy" enough for you, you have two options that won't bother anyone else.
(A) If it's low enough, reroll. You have a ton of character slots for a reason.
(B) If you don't want to reroll, server transfers are available, and relatively cheap. They also finish fast - you should be up and running and being spammed to join someone's SG on the new server in a few minutes, in most instances. So YOU can go to the server of YOUR choice without screwing ME over.
- DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
Last but not least (at least until better points come along to be added,) server consolidation is widely viewed in the industry as an MMO going on life support. No, we don't have WoWs numbers (and you should actually pay attention to when and how they got those.) They're an aberration in the MMO industry. COH has had and does have a very successful, sustainable population even at its lowest points, so there's no economic need to combine anything. The flip side of that, of course, has been suggested above - you crowd people together, break up their SGs and friends lists, cause characters to go missing and people definitely *will* quit, both out of annoyance and a sense of "The game is almost dead!"
In conclusion....
As stated before, when it comes to server consolidation... HELL NO.
__________________________________________________ __________________
EDIT: Nothing personal, but this suggestion has been rehashed to death, and Memphis Bill's post, even if a bit outdated in parts (ex. mention of starting in Galaxy City) is still valid.
I'm not saying that there will never be a consolidation of servers, but realistically it will happen just a few weeks (or a few months if we're lucky) before NCSoft pulls the plug on this game... -

Quote:Not sure if that question was addressed to anyone in particular, but I'll chime in:I want to make one additional point about the "grind": If you've played the game long enough, you've probably done nearly all (if not absolutely all) of the content at least once (probably with different toons). At the point you've done any mission/task once, every time afterward could be considered a grind. This includes iTrials and any other set of missions.
I suspect that my understanding of "grind" is different from other people's definitions. What is yours?
"Grinding", for me, means repeating the same task (mission, TF, etc.) 2 or more time successively with the same character.
Doing Frostfire 4 times with 4 different characters is not grinding to me, because each of my characters have a different mix of powersets, thus will need a different approach to the mission depending of the AT and the powersets (i.e. running it with a EM/Shield tanker is not the same as running it with a Emp/Elec defender)
Doing an ITF every week with my tanker would not be grinding if I have the opportunity to do some other content in between with that character.
Doing trials (i.e. DFB) or Holiday content (i.e. Halloween's "Haunted House" mission) over and over with the same character ? Grinding. -

I could bring Enora (F3 blaster) in her *ahem* alternate (Huge) form.

Quote:THAT'S IT !!!!!! I'M LEAVING !!!!!!! **ragequit**I just checked my NCSoft account.
My payment went through at the beginning of the month.
You poor *AHEM* are stuck with me for another 14 months at least...
(which would make more sense if i did not re-sub for 14 months last december....) -
Excellent interview, and I whole-heartedly agree with the interviewer's parting comment (i.e. "hire this woman !") - even if it means CoH would lose D_R
Oh, and by the way: when we are going to get our next TCOSR fix ? -
Humm.... I did not buy Beast Mastery, but if it's so much fun I just might...
I have 2 MMs (Mercs/Poison and Demon/Dark) and while it's cool to be a "Team of One" I agree with Grey that they do feel like they're made of paper tissue.
(Also, I won't do TFs or even PuG with my MMs cause I can't quite get the right synergy inside a team - more often than not I'm lagging behind while the rest of the team is steamrolling. Guess I'm not that good a player... )
Just out of curiosity, what secondary did you take with your BM ? -
